A Great Baseball Book

This is really a very exclusive club. Less than twenty-five players amassed this many hits. Lots of very fine hitters never quite made it to 3,000. It takes a long and fruitful career to make it. There are a lot of good stories about each one in this book.

A ten star rating!

Greats like Sam Crawford, Sam Rice, Rogers Hornsby, Al Simmons, Mel Ott, Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Jimmie Foxx, Mickey Mantle, Mike Schmidt, Ernie Banks and Carlton Fisk and so many other have failed to do what 24 players have done - get 3,000 hits.

From Rose to Clemente this exclusive fraternity of two dozen of baseball best is covered n this one of a kind collectors book. This must have for every baseball fan of all ages breaks down each of the 24 and gives you a short glimpse into what has made them great.

In 213 pages you'll read about men like Aaron, Brett, Boggs, Gwynn, Ripken, Cobb, Rose, Musial, Waner, Winfield, Carew, Anson, Mays, Murray, Brock, Clemente and eight others. Simply one of the best books on baseball I have ever read.

Under $15.00 is well worth the price; I would have paid double for this book. Congratulations to the 24 best hitters in baseball and also to Sports Publishing Inc. for allowing me to read this book.

The Book has given me great pleasure over 30 years of using it.
The way Gary Players illustrates the Game anyone from Beginner on up can learn Golf. It is sad that it is no longer a published or revised book. Hopefully Gary Player would review it and update it. Go Gary Player Great Job.

One of the most sought after golf instruction books published in the last 50 years, this unique book features Gary Player's legendary "10 Commandments of Golf" and uses the detailed illustrated diagram method of showing the golf swing (far more effective then photos).

I have always dreamed of meeting the 16 baseball players that have hit over 500 home runs. Now I realize that meeting Ruth, Ott, Mantle and Matthews would be impossible that's why I'm glad to have a copy of this book.

Along with those listed earlier you read about Aaron, Schmidt, Jackson, Foxx, Killebrew, Mays, Robinson, Williams, McCovey, Banks, Murray and the newest member McGwire.

The book is new and updated and the 16 players are listed alphabetically and no ranking system is used. I like this concept as it gives the reader the choice as to which they consider the best of this very special and elite group.

Each chapter is written to not only discuss the career of the player but also let others who knew them talk about the person as well. The book also includes photos of each of the players. This is for every baseball fan young and old - excellent work and well done!!

Right now there are sixteen players who have hit over 500 home runs. Each one has a nice write-up and stories that are very enjoyable to read. Fifteen are retired or deceased and one is still playing.

If you are a fan of those "whatever happened to's" or just really love baseball, this is the book for you. It's focus is on those players who made their major league debuts in the 50's. It profiles each player, regardless of their impact on the game. It gives a little history on their background, career and what they have done post-career.
I also read their follow-up "Aaron to Zipfel" which follows the same format except that it follows those players who debuted in the 60's. I'm also hoping for one from the 70's (my era).

Terrific baseball nostalgia

The research that went into this book, a "Where-Are-They-Now" on baseball players of the 1950's, must have been incredible. This is a great read -- either reading it straight through, or just picking it up and opening to random pages, or looking up a particular player that you're wondering about. In some instances the items about the players include material from interviews with the players themselves. The items often include amusing little references to events from the years when the players broke into the majors. One sometimes-annoying aspect is the authors' obsession with cute statistical coincidences -- like, "so-and-so player was born in 1922, and in so-and-so year he hit 22 home runs and made 22 errors, and in his final season he hit .222" -- but, I must admit, I kind of got into it after a while. A great little tidbit is that the book ends by noting that there was one player (Jim Baumer) who played a few major league games in 1949 and a few more in 1961 -- but missed the whole decade of the '50's (stuck in the minors, we must guess). As the authors say, he must wonder, just like the rest of us, where the '50's went. Beautiful!

In the tradition of "Downfield" and "A Summer Up North...," Poling doesn't only let us poke our head in and take a look around, instead, he lets us tag along with him and go inside to see what's happened to some of our favorite players. While his writing makes you feel like he's sitting with you and telling you his story, his vivid descriptions will make you feel like you are at training camp and that Donald Driver just whizzed right past you. Or that you are sitting on the couch with Wayne Simmons' mother as she talks longingly about the son she misses so much. This one is a necessity for any Packer fan or anyone that wants to know what happens to the heroes after the lime-light fades.

Enthusiastically recommended for any Packers fan

Written by editor and columnist Jerry Poling, After They Were Packers: The Super Bowl XXXI Champs & Other Green Bay Legends is the true story of the 1997 Superbowl champions after they left the Packers. Some returned to ordinary lives; some tragically fell victim to powerful internal demons. Filled with career highlights and behind-the-scenes glimpses of the world of professional football, as well as a handful of black-and-white photographs, After They Were Packers is enthusiastically recommended for any Packers fan curious about what became of the ultimate winning team.

"All Heart" is not only the title of this book, but also an apt description of Michael Clemons. The book is written by Michael himself and he handles himself in this book with the same grace and dignity with which he plays football and lives his life. Clemons is a player who always speaks well of others and those who know him only from media interviews might expect this to be a sugar-coated book. Not so. Michael speaks honestly about the people and issues he has encountered in football. How can this man be so happy all the time? Read the book and you'll know his secret!

Why is this man always smiling ?

All Heart, the new book from Michael Clemons, gives us an insight into one of the finest athletes and human beings on the Canadian sporting scene. Pinball shows us again what a wonderful guy he really is. The antithesis of the modern pro athlete, he combines talent, humanity, humour, and class. All Heart is a journey through the professional and personal growth of an all-time Argonaut. You''ll see why this man is always smiling !!

Australian Footballers Naked for a Cause!

Like the "Dieux du Stade" series of calendars, AUSTRALIAN FOOTBALLERS NAKED FOR A CAUSE 2008 Calendar is an oversize, brilliantly photographed, high-quality collection of poster-sized pictures of nude and semi-nude athletes. Is it something in the water? Without exception, each man (average age 22) is stunning! Australian Photographer PEDRO VIRGIL's choice for the cover, 21 year-old WILLIAM ZILLMAN, reminds us of Matt Damon. Jordan Bannister, player for the Carleton Blues, is a young Bruce Springsteen. Chris Knights, stares at us in a way that recalls Keanu circa "River's Edge". Six packs, square jaws, ample butts (all that running and kicking) abound in the provocative, ethnically-diverse collection. The calendar DRIPS WITH TESTOSTERONE! Women (and men) who appreciate the male nude, especially when they're masculine movie-star material, will love AUSTRALIAN FOOTBALLERS NAKED FOR A CAUSE. The calendar benefits the McGrath Foundation, an Australian breast health charity.

I recently bought a copy of the calendar and OMG, the guys are HOT and the images were simply stunning! What a great job done by the photographer, Pedro Virgil! Compared to other calendars I have seen or bought, this one really is a top of the range, premium quality product. The high gloss images seem to make the guys leap of my wall! (I wish!). I love the way the photographer has captured these real sportsmen in a way which is so sexy without looking contrived. Far sexier and more real than the French rugby calendar which I also bought. I hadn't heard of the photographer before but I'll be watching out for more of his work now if it's like this. The Naked for a Cause calendar just oozes sexy, sultry, straight-guy masculinity. An awesome buy!

"The only real game in the world I think - baseball"
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2005-02-01
This is a book about a legend. He more than any other player changed the game and made it America's national pasttime. After being the greatest pitcher of his time for Boston he was traded to the Yankees where he went on to begin making the home run synonymous with his name. In the house that Ruth built' Yankee Stadium along with Lou Gehrig he lead the Yankees of the 1920's to a string of pennants and World Series. Both on and off the field the Babe was outsized, and seemed to be unstoppable. He was the greatest player the game ever had and probably ever will have. He was in some sense a babe all his life, childlike and uncontrollable but he was also famous for acts of kindness, including the famous homerun hit on request by a young fan fatally ill. His love of the game and his love of life are now apart of America's legendary heritage.

Very Good.
