This book tells the hardships of living in a poor inner city apartment, hoping that one day you will make it to the NBA. It tells two true storys that actually happened. How that playground kids put in the effort to get a scholarship for basketball from Isah Thomas's former highschool. It tells what life after basketball is, and how living with not much can still mean living. This book captures what reading is all about, learning things about places that you may of never been before. This book is one of the beest biographies ever, anybody who knows and understands basketball should read, and love this book. The book is better than the movie.

The book was well organized and well written. I was able to understand how two young yeenagers experince life in thier low budget enviroment. And to them they see that basketball is their only way out of the inner city. Overall I feel that this book can help out many teenagers that think that playing in the NBA is the only way out of proverty

We bought this book as a gift for our 1 year old. He LOVES sticking his face through the hole and making the animal sound. It has been a fun way to introduce him to animals and their sounds. He also loves it when Mommy or Daddy pretend along with him!! The pictures and the story are really cute!

Very Entertaining!

I picked this book up at the zoo - but liked it so much I have bought more copies from Amazon for other kids. My 13 month old is very amused by this book. Each page has an animal head - with a face missing. My son always giggles when someone picks up the book and makes a face through the page opening. He is even amused when we put him in front of a mirror with the book open with his face in the opening!

A book written objectively, fairly, from the inside

Review Date: 2008-04-12
For all the books written about Ted Williams and his ability to hit a baseball better than anyone who has ever lived, this is a fantastic little book to read if you want to really understand this complicated man. Written by one of Ted's long-time friends and confidants, the book is unusually objective, showing Ted's flaws without apology. Ted had a temper and could be thoughtless, even cruel, and that comes through. So does the rest of Ted's character. When you finish this book, you will probably, like me, "miss" Ted just as the author does.

My favorite little incident has Ted cursing a stray cat that's been hanging around his door. Then, after preparing breakfast for his guests, he sets a plate of scraps by the door for that cat. "No point in it going to waste," he gruffly says. Reading this made me smile. Ted, do you suppose the da** cat hangs around your door so much, because you feed it? A clear example of a famous and profound saying: Actions speak louder than words. Ted curses the cat, but feeds it.

I've always been a big Ted Williams fan. Reading this book has made me even more enthusiastically in Ted's corner, and it has also given me a very clear picture of his dark side. A wonderful book, fair, honest, warm, and very well worth buying and reading.

By the way, the CD that comes with this book, Ted talking about his crash landing in Korea and other assorted subjects, should be listened to after reading the book. First get to know the man, then hear his voice, and it all comes together.

A must have for the "well versed" Williams fan.

Great book by John Underwood!
Those familiar with many Ted Williams books and articles will recognize some of the stories in the book, but anything with Ted talking "off the cuff" is great. The CD recording included with the book of Ted giving his opinions, experiences and thoughts is priceless! Mr. Underwood, if you read this you should release all of your Williams recordings on CD. I guarentee they'd be very popular!!

This should not be the first Ted Williams book you read. I suggest "My Turn at Bat" also by Underwood or "Ted Williams: An American Hero." by Leigh Montville as your first Williams read.

Personal Ted

John Underwood's book will please any Ted fan. He surely knew him personally, sharing anecdotes that reveal Ted Williams as a human being as well as a ballplayer. Underwood is not afraid to address Ted's insecurities or his occasional pitfalls/negatives that may have undermined some personal relationships and the baseball world. His records on and off the field speak for themselves. He was the best Boston player ever and made children his priority, including Underwood's. The book also gives much more credit to Bobby Jo Ferrell, Ted's eldest daughter and the only sane offspring of the family. He is complimentary of her efforts to free Ted from his frozen fate. Knowing her personally, I share Underwood's opinion of her positive qualities and compassion - a smile that would captivate anyone.
We all know what Ted wanted after his death and it wasn't a macabre warehouse in Arizona where humans are vivisected and desecrated. Underwood has a persoanal video of Ted saying what he desired after death - cremation and dispersal with his dog's remains in the Keys. The book reads extremely well and will keep you spellbound as if you are there with Underwood in Ted's home in the Keys or in Hernando. One on one, you feel a part of the conversations. Nicely done and a must for Boston fans that cherished the Man and the game when it was a "game" not a business.

Although I read this book over a year ago, I haven't been able to get Louis Bannet's story out of my mind. Being a musician myself (albeit an amateur one) I can't even begin to imagine my life riding solely on the merits of my playing. But regardless of how wonderful a musician Bannet was (and he was), his humanity and courage is more impressive. Shuldman captures this without overshadowing it. Bannet is the star; Bannet is the inspiration and Shuldman makes sure of this. The writer is the conduit for Louis to come alive again to all who read "Jazz Survivor". An amazing tale told with love and admiration. I highly recommend this book.

"Jazz Survivor" by Ken Shuldman is one of those marvelous books that opens up our hearts and minds. This book allows you to be introduced to an amazing man... Louis Bannet. Louis was a Musician, Performer, Holocaust Survivor, Husband, Father, and a masterful Storyteller. This is the true story of a man who lived each moment of his life to the fullest. Louis had such a generous spirit, that he was able to keep his memories of the horrors of the holocaust at hand, to share, inform and inspire others. "Jazz Survivor" is a celebration of Louis' life. This is a book I will cherish, and so will you.

As I write this, football great Jim Brown's autobiography, OUT OF BOUNDS, is out of print. While I have not ready every autobiography or sports bio, I can't imagine one more engrossing than the Cleveland Brown's OUT OF BOUNDS. Two reasons: 1)It's the story of possibly the best football player to date, in his own words. 2)Jim Brown's own words are dead honest. If you think he's kidding about anything you read in OUT OF BOUNDS, I'd like to see you tell him to his face. Don't give up the search to find OUT OF BOUNDS!

This book was an excellent biography abput sports legend Jim
Brown. He covers his outstanding football career at Syracuse
University. He is also able to give adequate coverage to his
outstanding career as a professional football player. He covers the women who have been a part of his life. He also discusses the football coaches that he dealt with during his football
career. Brown also openly discusses his role in many social issues of the time. He is still even today a hero to many Americans. This book gives an outstanding coverage of his life.
You will not be dissapointed. Buy it.

Best sports-bio I've ever read

Read this 4 or 5 years ago, but I can still remember things JB mentioned. This is easily the best sports bio I've read. Usually these things are complete fluff, but JB is a man of substance and he speaks out with intelligence and experience on a number of things (race relations, gangs, etc.) In many ways he is the anti-OJ; he has never gone out of his way to fit in with whites while turning his back on the meanstreets. Rather, he has dedicated much of his life to helping young blacks improve themselves and get out of the gangster life. He does a lot of honorable things, that's why it saddens me when I hear about his repeated run ins w/the law for beating his wife/girlfriend. In any case, this book gives great insight into the complex mind of the greatest football player to ever play the game.

I just purchased the new softback edition today. Great color photo of Johnny on the cover - 1964 style. I read the chapter "Callison for President" twice. It's a complete reliving of the 1964 season, which was my favorite even though we lost. The book takes us through the entire decade of the 60s, which brought back a lot of good memories for me. It's a must read book.

Fantastic - baseball nostalgia!!

Mr. John Sletten's biography of Mr. Callison is not your typical baseball 'fact' or 'stats' book. It is a truly marvelous story of a pre-million dollar contract player and his rise from poverty to MVP. Anyone with an interest in the 'old' baseball and its heros will love it!!

I can't believe how much I enjoyed this book! I picked it up because I was interested in a little bit of the medieval background of chess; but once I started, I couldn't stop. Hartston does a marvelous job of bringing out the humanity of all the world chess champions and explaining how these characters shaped the history of the game. Each of the Fathers of chess is given a chapter or two that describes his life, career, and influence--on and off the chess board. Far from being a mere timeline of successive champions, the book hightlights and rise and fall of each champion in a form of dynamic history.

While each chapter offers a sample from the champions' games, it is not necessary to work through them. In fact, the book can be thoroughly enjoyed without any understanding of chess at all. However, I do recommend studying the Morphy game. It is short, elegant, and chock full of amazing features and sheer genius. (Having thrived before the age of "official" champions, Morphy was somewhat unknown to me. This book gave me so much appreciation for him, that now I don't hesitate to look upon him as my chess hero.)

This is one of those rare books that I hated to have end. It is still provoking daily thoughts even weeks after I've read it. I will definitely read it again.

This is the first book on chess which I have read and it has spurred me to become an avid chess player. The lives of every famous chess player from Philidor to Kasparov is chronicled in this scholarly writing. Complete with their games and excellent photos , this book is a must-read for all who want to know about the greatest players in the history of chess. Brillant and painstaking research on their lives and their eccentricies.

This excellent book provides a unique look into the history of chess by examining the lives and careers of its prominent players. Although the text essentially ends with Fischer, it is a worthwhile read. The author's style is engaging, and his choice to include only a representative game or two at the end of each master's chapter makes the book flow nicely as a story, rather than a manual on chess tactics or strategy. If you are interested in learning about the characters who played a role in defining this great game, Hartston's book is for you.

John Krell has collected a concise volume of the teachings of William Kincaid, the father of american flute playing. Krell performed with Kincaid in the Philadelphia Orchestra flute section for many years. Here is a well designed 100 page MUSIC lesson from a master musician. Part 1 - Elements of Technique covers Diaphragm control, embouchure, tone, vibrato, articulation, finger technique, Part 2 - addresses phrasing and musicality, Part 3 - deals with Musical execution, rhythm, tempo breathing points dynamics, fake fingerings, etc. Part 4 - Final notes on repertoire with Appendixes covering tone production, practice routines and an interview with Kincaid from May 1960. An enlightening read with entertaining anecdotes. This book is a must for any professional musicians library. I am a percussionist by trade and a teacher. I have been able to use many elements contained in this book by merely substituting the word drum for flute. It is truly a timeless text with a vast amount of information for the serious student of music.

This is probably the greatest book for flute playing that I have in possesion. I highly recommend this book to any serious flute student, high school or college level. I must say however that these sellers on here are cheating you out of buying this book. Currently the prices I see for this are ranging $180-$200. I bought my book brand new for $12.95 at a nice music store in Dallas. There is an older edition of the book but the only difference between the two is the front cover. No front cover is worth changing the price value of the book by over $100 worth. If you want this book buy it or order it from your local bookstore or music store or write to these idiotic sellers that think they know two cents about a book's worth. It's published in it's second edition by the National Flute Association and I promise it was only $12.95!
