Missing a third of the Reformation

Of course, Luther and Calvin account for the majority of the reformation, and the O'Donovon's do a fine job of bringing them to life (as much as one can say that about Calvin). However, this text makes references to Anabaptists without giving them 'equal time.' Of course, they should not expect this pacifist and somewhat isolationist sect to raise a stink over being left out (in fact they would probably be in favor of maintaining a low profile), but it is intellectually incomplete. What is there, however, is excellent.

Politics à la Male, Christian Fanatics

Review Date: 2003-04-23
This collection truly is indispensable to anyone interested in the Christian tradition of political theology. A vast array of sources-many of which are quite inconvenient to obtain-are placed at the fingertips of anyone interested. Additionally, the authors distinguish their collection with numerous erudite, probing essays preceding each collection and author. These not only provide historical context but also the outlines of modern scholarly debate. Also, for further reference, bibliographies are concluded. In a word, it is a `sourcebook' par excellance.

There are omissions, as is the case with all collections; however, this does not detract from the overall utility of the collection.

Uncovering the Christian roots of Western constitutionalism
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 7 total.
Review Date: 2002-04-17
Oliver O'Donovan, a Brit, and Joan Lockwood O'Donovan, born and raised a Canuck, of Christ Church College, Oxford, do a tremendous service to our understanding of the West's pre-Enlightenment constitutional tradition.

Political theorists and philosophers seemed to suffer an epidemic of historical and philosophical amnesia beginning about the 17th century with Hobbes, Locke, et al. Although their writings clearly rely on some sixteen centuries of thought with respect to political authority in the Christian tradition, 17th-c. theorists and on give little hint of the extent of their claiming the ideas of "dual (or plural) authority" and the rule of law as developed in western Christendom.

With selected excerpts from early church father Irenaeus to father of modern constitutionalism Grotius, the O'Donovans trace this development from an early church in tension (and persecution) with the sacralist Roman state; through the power struggles between church and imperial, and church and feudal authorities; and the development of Lutheran and Calvinist theories of resistance vis a vis 16th-c. absolutist theories of the divine right of kings.

Far from its being an invention or child of the Enlightenment, the O'Donovans make clear the West's tradition of plural authority and consitutionalism was delivered to Enlightenment theorists as a mature creature which continues to inform and instruct Western constitutional thought to the present, albeit far too little.

The O'Donovans have compiled an exquisite collection of "family thoughts" -- a collection of Christian thinkers who took the polis seriously.

This text provides essential sources for the collective Christian memory up to the edges of the modern period. With that kind of foundation, Christians and non-Christians alike will find long-suffering arguments of the faith that extend beyond short term political "wins."

Horse. I wish for a horse. As a little girl, every birthday wish was for a pony....well, sad to say, it was never granted. But now here's another chance to enter the world of the daily life of horses with Gallop-o-Gallop. Ms. Alonzo's picturebook of heartfelt poetry takes the reader into the sensitive, raucous and sometimes silly world of horses (a poem about horse sneezes?, yes!), sure to fulfill current and bygone equine dreams. Beautifully rendered illustrations by Kelly Murphy (no relation, but I wish!) depict this world with sensitivity and a playfullness that will engage children of all ages. A definite coffee table book for kids...make that hot-cocoa table book, with two lumps of sugar please....for the horse...

I'm going to give this book to my horse-loving brother and sister-in-law, whose daughter is already grown. It's just as good a gift for adults as kids. But horse-crazy young girls will love it best, I think. Sandra Alonza has produced a collection of delightful horse poems that will play on all your emotions -- laughter to tears. For a grin, beware the SNEEZING horse. For a tug at your heart, visit "Old Horse." Kelly Murphy's exquisite paintings capture Alonzo's poems in jewel tones: a bareback galloping across the prairie, a shaggy winter coat, a dreamtime unicorn; it's all there.

Evocative verse with art that is a perfect match

For all those lovers of horses, young and old, Sandra Alonzo and Kelly Murphy have presented a wonderful and evocative picture book! The very accessible verse (something that I feel is key when it comes to poetry for youth), combined with the superb page design and artwork make this book an extremely enjoyable read.

Got some horse lovers in your family? They will love these poems and the artwork, too.

This was an excellent introduction to high-speed internet access and the "pipes" over which it runs, very appropriate for anyone who needs to connect a LAN to the internet.

It provides a nice bridge between the beginner's guide to the internet and the serious gearhead textbooks that make up the majority of internet books today. Very little fluff and not too much that the non-technical reader will have to skip.

Read it!

I've always been happy with my readings in the nutshell handbook series from O'Reilly, but this book tops the heap. A survey of all the hardware and software necessary to set up a dedicated link from any organization to the internet is contained herein, from HDLC to setting up networking on a mac, from SONET fiber rings to ISDN lines. A must read for any user who's ever wondered, "What does T1 REALLY mean?"

If you are looking at installing and configuring large bandwidth lines or backbones, start with this book. No matter how much you already know about Windows, Unix, Cisco, you will definately learn something. It's staying on my desk forever. Worth every penny!

I give this beautiful book either to newlyweds on their first Christmas or as a shower/wedding gift. It is so poignant. I hope to remind them that the sacrifices you make in early love/marriage need to be continued through all the years of your marriage. Always wanting to make your partner happy often times means forgoing your own happiness. The red cover I like for Christmas otherwise the white cover for wedding gifts.

I ordered this story so the special person in my life could read it - we had a similar incident in which we both had done something for one another without knowing. I choose this book because of it's appearance. And although it is set up like a children's book, it was a neat Christmas gift all the same. I only was concerned about the story and mission was accomplished. It is a larger size book and very beautiful so we have decided to sit it out each Christmas as part of our decor.

I picked up this book out of nice-cover curiosity and for some light reading to my 2nd grade CCD class, and instead of finding simple children's Christmas book I found a literary masterpiece. Lizabeth Zewerger has transformed O. Henry's very mature adult short story about social poverty and vicarious giving into a children's tale about the true meaning of Christmas. I was awed by the delicateness of Zewerger's watercolors and amazed by the way she perfectly expressed each emotion of O. Henry's tale.
In a world where every holiday (especially Christmas) has been commercialized this book is a symbol of the true meaning of giving. Before you get lost in the hustle and bustle (or if you unfortunately already have) do yourself and your loved ones a favor and pick up this book. It's a great gift for children of all ages and adults too. This is a gift from the heart to give at Christmas.
Reconnect and STAY connected!

This book brings a refreshing view to not only the 23rd Psalm, but life in general. It is one of the best spiritual books I have ever read with a keen sense of informing the reader of how the Christian journey evolves through a lifetime. Mr. Lively does an excellent job of equating personal experiences with the meaning of the 23rd Psalm, and how most of us get it wrong initially but need the shepherd to continually guide us. I highly recommend reading this book.

I had the priviledge of reading this book before it was published nationally. Before reading it, Psalm 23 was a very familiar verse but had no real meaning for me - more like a comforting Christmas carol than anything applicable to daily life. After reading this book, I developed a whole new dimension in my faith and understanding of God's love for us. Bob Lively takes Psalm 23 line by line and relates it to his own profound experience of discovery. With his humble style and genuine story, he makes Psalm 23 tangible and meaningful. What once was a mysterious prayer is now something personal which guides and strengthens me daily. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in the concept of grace and experiencing the profound realization that they are loved unconditionally.

The Graphis Nudes series presents the best in recent figure photography. This is no exception, and presents many different views of the nude model. Some of the artists emphasize the raw physical presence of the male (p.110, 132) or female (p.37, 118, 229) figure. Others artists address the model as sculpture (cover, p.109, 200) or abstraction (p.12, 60, 188). Yet others display sentiment (p.101, 209,215), passion (p.92-3, 139), or simple appreciation (p.18, 158). And ordinary beauty isn't the only goal (p.148).

It's a worthwhile collection, featuring classic masters like Herb Ritts as well as the newer masters-to-be. I enjoy the collection immensely, don't get me wrong, but I never felt that it demanded a lot of me. Perhaps the commercial purpose of this book, to showcase its artists, encouraged accessible kinds of imagery. I want art to stretch me, at least a little, but this generally stayed well within the common comfort zone. Well, that's not really a bad thing. Go ahead, enjoy.

Graphis Nudes 3 ranks as one of the best photography collections of the year. One of the most impressive aspects of the collection is the editor's decision to include emerging artists alongside some true legends in the field. One of these exciting new voices was the Maine couple of Nancy and Matthew Sleeth who have five (!) photogrphs included in the book. Their passion for the female form, as well as the personal subtext of their work qualifies these pieces as truly exceptional. I had the luck to find a collection by Nancy and Matthew at a wonderful little art gallery in the Georgetown part of Washington, D.C. called Urbanspace. Their work in Grapis Nudes 3 was amazing, but seeing it in person was an extra treat.

An Elegant Edition & Praise to the Publisher

Review Date: 2002-04-24
"Nudes 3", Graphis Inc.(1999) ISBN: 1-888001-66-6 is a superb 255 large-sized page presentation of some 200 nudes, mostly female and almost exclusively in B/W monochrome with a rare duotone or color. Publishers deserve praise for this elegant edition.

There is an excellent, quaint but all too short introductory commentary by photographer Barry Lategan who provides a brief digest of the nude form both historically from Biblical and pre-16th Century Irish churche times down to its present-day employment in advertising, girlie magazines and calendars. He provides some reflections on perceived but not totally explained limitations and restrictions governing male nudity. He also gives an interesting explanation of why horseshoes are hung over door ways, a Celtic custom handed down from olden times.

The majority of images are excellent, nicely representative of acknowledged and established photographers of the nude body and I had especial respect for the artisitic works of Herb Ritts (folio of 12 images from "Women Through the Ages"), Barbara Bordnick, Howard Schatz, Barry Lategan and many others. However, I found Suzanne Opton's "Device" (from the midriff tragedies) and Nancy & Matthew Sleeth's "Venus at Thirty" (still no pubic hair?) contrived and of uncertain merit in the context of this book. Nonetheless, "Nudes 3" - Graphis is substantial, and could find place on many coffee tables and open library shelves.

Hack Proofing Your Wireless Network is an invaluable resource for implementing or administering a wireless network. War Driving (searching for random insecure wireless networks) is happening all over. To keep your personal and confidential information private and to keep prying eyes from surfing your wireless network or hujacking your bandwidth you need to make sure you do everything you can to secure your wireless network. The case studies, Security Alerts, FAQ's and other features of this book all help to provide a comprehensive, must-read book on wireless network security. If you are new to the concept this book is written in a way that you will understand. Even if you know this stuff, this book should be kept close as a reference.

"Hack Proofing Your Wireless Network" (HPYWN) weighs in at 512 pages, but it could easily be half that size. While the book contains good information, its internal redundancy and inclusion of security advice not specific to wireless adds unnecessary pages. I recommend security professionals skim HPYWN for the material they need, and skip the generic network protection advice.

Unlike the attack-minded "Hack Proofing Your Network, 2nd Ed", HPYWN is indeed a defensive-oriented book. It offers strong overviews of widely deployed wireless technologies. These include modern cellular networks and wireless area networks created by 802.11, Bluetooth, and HomeRF. HPYWN offers sound advice on making the best use of available wireless defensive mechanisms, despite acknowledging that Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP) is "broken." An overview of popular wireless assessment tools like Netstumbler is helpful although not especially thorough...

Of the book's nine chapters, chapters 2 (A Security Primer, 50 pages) and 8 (Auditing, 43 pages) don't add anything original to the current body of published security books. Furthermore, many wireless security topics are discussed repeatedly. For example, I didn't need to read in chapters 1, 4, 5, and 6 that WEP's insecurities stem from weak Initialization Vectors. Other recommendations on changing default configurations, enabling logging, and so on also appear in multiple sections. The editor should have consolidated this information to avoid wasting the reader's time.

Overall, Syngress should be credited for getting into the wireless game with this book. I would have preferred to see protocol decodes, thorough documentation and usage examples for wireless assessment tools, and in-depth VPN deployment guidance. Should the second edition of HPYWN contain this information, it will justify its current page count.

Obviously, with WLANs the big issue now is security. If you are looking for a good introduction to the topic or work with WLANs already and need to learn about security, then this is a good place to start. This book lays a good foundation of knowledge and then is an interesting an easy read on the topic. The authors certainly demonstrate that they know their business. In a total of nine chapters they will take you through the majority of what you would need to know to keep your WLAN safe from the wardrivers. In addition to this, if you are thinking of going for any of the WLAN security certifications, this book will take you a long way down that road as well. Once again, another good publication from Syngress!

Nice step-by-step guide for building a web application that makes use of Hibernate. This fills in an important gap left by the official Hibernate documentation. However, a consequence of this approach is that much of the book ends up being devoted to explaining how to set up the chosen tools and frameworks (see table of contents). If you are instead looking for more in-depth information on topics such as session and object lifecycles, complicated mappings or performance, you'll find more information in the official Hibernate documentation (or in the corresponding section in the Spring documentation). This book really ought to have a less cute, but more descriptive title.

This book is a wonderful book for beginning hibernate. It has the right balance of theory and practice, and it is always right to the point and concise. I used it to get up to speed on hibernate 3 after not touching hibernate for two and a half years, and it was exactly what I needed. The paper quality is pretty bad, like some others have noted. However, I have read through about 70% of it (the only 70% I am going to read) and the paper/binding has shown no sign of deterioration, so do not let that keep you from reading it.

'Harnessing Hibernate' is a great resource for learning more about and how to use the Hibernate technology to map Java code to relational databases and vice versa. In today's programming world you want to be able to create object that directly map to database tables and fields. Not only does this allow for persistence and good scalability, it hides the SQL stuff that can otherwise make for difficult programming and puts them into familiar classes instead. Before this book there really wasn't great resources out on the market for learning about this technology but that is no longer the case. With 350+ pages spread over 14 chapters, good writing and separation of content this is a must have for all seasoned Java database and Hibernate developers.

One of the best computer-related instruction books I have ever read

While I was at work one day, I decided to write the persistence layer of an application that my team was working on. I had minimal experience with Hibernate because I had worked on another project where a coworker implemented the persistence layer and used Hibernate. I got to see a bit of the magic that Hibernate provides, and I thought it would be excellent for my current project. My problem was that I did not really know how to set everything up.

I searched on Amazon for books about Hibernate, and I wanted to make sure I bought one that was fairly current so that I could see how to use it with the latest technologies. I came upon Harnessing Hibernate which is only a few months old. Even though there were only two reviews, after reading them, I decided to take a chance on this book. Wow, these reviewers were exactly right!

The authors take you through a music cataloging project. Their progression through the concepts is nothing short of amazing. They seem to give the perfect amount of detail and explanation at each step, and then you begin to form questions in your mind. They seem to anticipate them, because these questions always seem to be answered in the next section.

I should inform you that I often dislike reading books on computer technologies. I find that most authors tend to make the books as dry as possible, going on and on, ad nauseam, about every detail and idiosyncrasy of the topic. The authors of Harnessing Hibernate, however, make the book completely enjoyable to read. Their style is conversational, and they do not try to talk over anyone's head. They give you plenty of useful information that you can use immediately, and inform you of other sources to investigate if you want more information on a particular aspect of the material.

Anyway, if you want to learn Hibernate in a clear and concise manner, then you will not be disappointed if you buy this book. It will keep you reading, and you won't fall asleep while doing so. And hey, you'll understand all of the material and you will even learn a lot about Hibernate! I do not give complements lightly, but this is indeed a perfect book.

Harnessing Hibernate is a fine book, which uses the most efficient ways to achieve its goal. Though focusing on Hibernate, the book enlists the usage of various frameworks such as Spring Framework, Stripes and Maven.

Part I: Hibernate in a hurry: The core

Build:
The book starts with how you should build which used to be a dread. The authors choose to use Ant - Maven task, which is cool. I use Maven directly, but that's beside the point. Both approaches are better than finding the JARs on the web.

Database:
HSQLDB is what the book recommends and for some reason it makes sense . It really is the best way to go. I am not suggesting to format your Oracle DB server and install HSQLDB; but I am suggesting you stay focused and worry about the big DB later; the book goes back to a larger DB; so don't worry too much right now.

The Project Hierarchy:
This one, I must admit, I do not care for; I think Maven directory structure is better and one should not have to create this manually, but that's probably personal. This is later reviewed in Chapter 12: Maven in More Depth.

Core hibernate:
The book doesn't mess around too much. It explains how to configure hibernate and before long you find your hands in hibernate mapping. From chapter 2 through chapter 9 you'll find yourself in the core of Hibernate: mapping, hibernate configuration, persistent objects (creating and finding), collections and associations, richer associations, custom value types, annotations, criteria queries and a look at HQL.

Part II: Playing nice with others: beyond the core

MySQL - a nice short intro to MySQL is shown.

Hibernate and Eclipse - yes, this is in here too (and up to date Eclipse v3.3). And just in time for you to get ready for a later chapter, Spring and Hibernate, which is the way J2EE is going anyway (lightweight).

Maven in more depth - Maven does not have many books out there and this is a very nice in depth explanation. If you think you've gotten short changed, take a look at Java Power Tools (you'll love that book too). The chapter is enough to get you moving with Maven, and if your Maven experience is anything like mine, you'll never go back to Ant.

Hibernate and Spring - this book could not have gotten any better than this. Spring, is like a dream. Rod Johnson, Colin Sampaleanu and team have done it well. Unlike the other monolithic approach, Spring takes advantage of already existing frameworks and offers this invisible layer to allow you to focus on what's important; your business code... and, of course, the book delivers. It shows you how Spring simplifies Hibernate development. If you're new to layered development a la separation of concerns (SoC) the book first introduces you to the DAO pattern. It then continues with the reason so many of us like the Spring framework: HibernateDAOSupport and the HibernateTemplate. Although I prefer to use the HibernateTemplate directly and avoid loosing my one chance at inheritance, I agree with the book examples. The authors are tying to help you understand what kind of support Spring offers.

Stripes with Spring and Hibernate - Now, the book could just end here and be done with it, but no, it continues with the web app. I mean, wow. The book ends with style. It uses Tomcat - and I think it does it to prove a point. You don't need a fancy big server to get J2EE running these days. Stripes is a cool project to work with and I thank the authors for introducing me to a framework I was clueless about.

This book is truly amazing. If you're looking for an in-depth approach to Hibernate take a look at Java Persistence with Hibernate. If, however, you're an impatient developer this is the book for you. I think it offers just enough in-depth theory and it keeps you awake with frequent easy to understand code.

James Elliott, Timothy M. O'Brien and Ryan Fowler; I thank you all for writing this book.

The author, Matianne O'Connor certainly knows her subject. Though I'm a more sedentary person then the author, her descriptive passages made me feel as if I were missing out on something by not spending more time in the woods, hiking. Seriously, Ms. O'Connor has written a very entertaining and informative book.

Haunted Hikes of New Hampshire is a hiking trail guide with a difference. From ghost towns of Monson Center and Indian Arrowhead Forest, to the UFO of Indian Head, to tales of Satan at Devil's Den Mountain, each hike is presented with a black-and-white map, and a scary story of its history. A handful of black-and-white photographs intersperse this spooky delight enthusiastically recommended for hikers in search of not just natural splendor, but also the unexplained majesty of the preternatural.

One thing about hiking is that kids often need a little extra motivation to want to do the hike. O'Connor has added the "haunted" aspect, which provides that extra motivation. The hike descriptions are easy to follow and the stories of the "hauntings" are well written and engaging.

What a treat this book is. It is perfect to set the stage for group hikes with kids. The excitement about the history of the mountain and the tales of mysterious encounters really get the kids geared up to hike. They actually like it more and forget the difficulty. They find themselves atop the mountain with big smiles. Thanks for book, I will use it often.

I moved to California 15 years ago after being a life-long resident of New England. In her book, O'Connnor manages to give us the gift of a bird's eye view of the haunted places and hikes associated with them in New Hampshire in both a charming and a little scary way. I can't wait to get back there to try some of the hikes. I especially like the way she rates them according to difficulty, awarding "ghost" icons to each description. Especially helpful are her very detailed directions on how to get to the beginning of each hike, and overall what to expect. As I am an elementary school teacher, I would love to take my class on some of these hikes. Her recounts of the scary stuff are enthralling. I found myself able to transport myself back in time to the misty, spectral past of New Hampshire, and imagine that the people in these stories really lived.

Carl Helvie's Healthy Holistic Aging offers a thoughtful and insightful guide for any of us who want to be healthy throughout our lifetimes and to prolong the time of our lives that is disease free.

His book provides an approach that is very holistic and that embraces our physical, mental and spiritual aspects as well as our interactions with each other and our environment. The reader is offered many ways to evaluate her/his health in each of these areas as well as a number of checklists and questionnaires that help the reader make self assessments and find practical solutions to health-related issues. Many examples of positive physical, mental and spiritual health behaviors are presented.

The book is soundly based on scientific research, but includes an overarching wisdom drawn from Helvie's considerable experience as a nurse, nursing educator and public health practitioner. I particularly enjoyed the chapters on positive mental and spiritual health behaviors and the many passages relating to health and relationships and also to health and our environment. I liked Helvie's stress on the importance of intervention and advocacy in matters of the environment and health.

I think this is a good book to use to make a solid self-assessment as to one's health from a holitstic perspective, with lots of good information and ideas for contending with health concerns in contemporary society. I recommend it to [...] buyers.

Carl Helvie's book, Healthy Holistic Aging, strikes a chord with many of his wise and economical suggestions for living to a drug-free old age. His list of herbs and their uses was especialy helpful. The book is written using his own experiences with the western medical regime (he has earned a doctorate in Public Health Nursing) versus his healing with alternative, gentler methods during his bout with lung cancer. His book also addresses the importance of healthy relationships to prolonging life--a topic that isn't readily addressed in other discussions of old age. Each topic is discussed candidly and clearly, from protecting one's environment to becoming a legislative activist; from surrounding oneself with beauty to eating and exercising wisely and well. Many studies are cited if the reader would like to explore furthur. I highly recommend this book as a general reference as well as for casual reading.

It is clear from the start that Dr. Helvie's intention is for each individual's total health - body, mind and spirit. He takes you step by step, (sometimes baby steps which are greatly appreciated), through the process of awareness, to understanding, and then offers directions to the path of healing. It is evident that the author believes in and practices what he preaches. The book is written to appeal to a wide audience and in easy to understand terms. I also suggest opening the book to a random page and read the pearls of wisdom offered. Do this often and the words will encourage you and support you on your road to Healthy Holistic Aging.

This blueprint advances the field of aging and efforts to improve the population's health and quality of life through direct education and information to the population as a whole. Dr. Helvie highlights the role of the community in assisting the individual and population to successfully attain optimum in health, environment and aging. This population - based approach goes further in its dissemination, beyond the confines of the book to include an interactive component that welcomes the reader to add information and update current research and information. In so doing, the author has engaged the populace in not only one's individual health and well being but that of the entire population. There are no boundaries using this dissemination and interaction approach.

What is exemplary about Healthy Holistic Aging is that the book not only provides an easy to follow blueprint for health and holistic aging, but the author is an exceptional role model for his program. Can you live a healthy and independent life to the age of 100? Can you enjoy positive relationships? Can you maintain a healthy environment? Carl Helvie says you can and at age 74, he's a perfect example of the right things to do. He has no chronic illnesses and is among the 11% of the age 65-and-overs who take no prescribed medications. As a professor emeritus and a doctor of public health, he knows whereof he speaks and cites overwhelming scientific evidence that good diet, exercise, adequate sleep, prayer, meditation, positive relationship with others and a clean and safe environment can ensure successful aging.

I just hope all of us will listen.
