Just the title provides food for thought: Blue Ridge 2020, An Owner's Manual, reminds us that the public has a responsibility for effective stewardship of the public lands in the Blue Ridge. I also like the play on words of 2020--hindsight is 20/20, and if we don't take a hard, clear look at what is happening to the ecology of the Blue Ridge and work hard to improve it, we will have deep regrets by the year 2020. The human scale of twenty years is very effective. I'm 31--what kind of Blue Ridge will I experience at 51? As a local environmental activist in the Page Valley, I find this book is a tremendously useful and motivating resource. In one book, Steve Nash provides an overview of specific problems and practical solutions. His writing style is clear and accessible. If you care about the health about the Blue Ridge or want up to date information about the quality of air and water in the mountains, this is a book you need to read. This is one of the best "state of the ecology" books I've read, and it is particularly useful for its regional approach.

Environmental Journalism at its Best

Steve Nash, an associate professor of journalism at the University of Richmond, may be the best environmental writer at work in Virginia today. In his newly published book, "Millipedes and Moon Tigers: Science and Policy in an Age of Extinction," he explores a complex of issues -- the virtual disappearance of old growth forest in the Mid-Atlantic, the devastation of the chestnut tree, the plague of invasive species, the plummeting songbird population, and the near-extinction of the Peter's Mountain mallow (Virginia's rarest plant) -- of immediate concern to Virginians. As a bonus, he treats readers to fascinating essays on a variety of national issues: the critical role of bugs in the environment, the wolves of Isle Royal, and the promises and perils of genetic engineering, cloning and other technologies.
I would describe Steve, who happens to be a personal friend, as a Jared Diamond-style environmentalist: There is no question where his sympathies lay but he is intellectually honest. He is cognizant of the complexities of the issues and the trade-offs entailed with any solutions -- trade-offs not only between the environment and the human economy, but tradeoffs between different environmental solutions. Steve does not deliver the party line -- he airs a wide variety of perspectives. He does not profess a faith-based environmentalism, grounded in romanticism and sentimenality, but a science-based environmentalism. That's why, although I may not always agree with his conclusions, I always respect his arguments.
A blessing for time-strapped readers who prefer a quick dip into the issues, "Millipedes and Moon Tigers" is short. Its essays are succinct and to the point. Anyone who is passionate about Virginia's environment, or environmental issues generally, should read this book.

Although this book is relatively small (78 pages), Anne Finch has packed a lot of information into it...from greyhound history to adopting a retired racer to living with them to the last years of this noble creature. The pictures are lovely and are themselves easily worth the price of the book. This is not intended to be a comprehensive work on greyhounds, rather it is a more summarized overall view of them. It is an excellent resource for people considering adoption and a "must have" in the library of all who are owned & loved by greyhounds.

This is the best book I've seen for Water Garden plants. The detailed discription of the vast veriaty of plants is incredable. I would recommend this book to be the first and perhaps the only book you'll need for choosing your plants for your pond or water garden.

This is a truly excellent book. For those of you who have already purchased water garden books, you know how frustrating it is when they don't give any detail about the plants they use, ("for a small container garden, use a dwarf water lily..."), but is that beautiful Panama Pacific water lily a dwarf, is it medium, or large? This book will give you those details. It tells you about the foibles of water plants, (did you know that some water lilies will melt in too much heat?) It includes basics on many different varieties of water plants, some basics of planting aquatic plants in the water garden and some very bare-bones on putting fish into a water garden, (but that's not what it is designed for). I am giving it 4 out of 5 stars, because they did not consistently include the common names in the index, even to reference back to the latin name. You can find water lily, which refers you to Nymphaea, but you can't find hair grass except under Eleocharis. If you are looking for a book that covers a wide variety of aquatic plants, I highly recommend this one.

I think i was really interesting because they had a dictionary in the back and it was also cool because I didn't know that Steve Nash was drafted by the Phoenix Suns and then traded to the Dallas Mavericks and then traded by the Mavericks to the Suns.

The photographs are excellent, sharing the Bahamian lifestyle with the viewer. For those that do in-depth research prior to their travels, this is informative covering history and major sites. Highly recommend for the interesting coverage of sites. Not detailed enough for the actual trip planning. Worth the purchase for those who want more then the basic go see this and go do that.
