Napoleon and His Guard the Mother of All ReferencesReview Date: 2000-12-29
I first came upon this wonderful book as a Senior at the University of Minnesota in 1984. My senior thesis was a study of Anglo-French Diplomacy during the Napoleonic period, and I find this book to be a wonderful source of information, not only information concerning the History of the Guard, but also more generalized history of the period itself.
This book, as stated, has a fabulous collection of artwork from the Anne Brown Collection at Brown U., and also does a wonderful job getting down to the nitty gritty concerning the Marshals, the Campaigns, the Politics of the Period, etc. Commandant LaChouque leaves no stone unturned in this hugely successful documentary on the Era.
The fact that this book centers the majority of its attention on Napoleon's Guard specifically is especially attractive to me since even now with the advent of the Internet it's still a bit of a tooth pull to get so complete an analysis of the history of one of the most courageous, loyal and dedicated organizations of professional soldiers the world has ever seen...La Garde Imperiale! These hardcore heroes richly deserve to be remembered, and this book does their memory ultimate honor.
The day I lost my original copy of this book was a sad one, and I'm very pleased I have now had, thanks to Amazon.Com, the opportunity to get a replacement. I most highly recommend this book for any gung-ho student of Napoleonic History...Vive L'Empereur!

WONDERFUL ENCOURAGEMENT FOR MOMS OF PRESCHOOLERSReview Date: 2005-05-23
Because her book was first published in 1988, readers today can be assured Yates knows what she's talking about. Her five children are now grown, married, and raising their own families. Since her husband and children have also written books, the Yates' successful parenting experience is documented in the various stages of their journey.
From this authority, Yates offers expert survival tips for mothers still in the trenches raising young children. Her book opens with the sinking feeling that her house is too quiet. Where are the twins? She discovers little black footprints trailing from the fireplace, across the brand new carpet, to the utility room freezer. "Peering inside, I found two little girls black with soot joyfully looking at books!" By seeing her in this situation, we understand she's been there, done that, and she knows what moms of young kids go through every day.
The book is divided into ten sections: the first chapter offers a general overview of the challenges that face mothers, then the next eight sections look at each challenge specifically and offer tips for overcoming them. Examples include maintaining a positive image, establishing priorities that work, becoming a best friend in marriage despite the heavy demands of child-rearing, disciplining children, and shaping a Christian home. She ends the book with ideas for parents heading into the teen years, which is another age she writes about in AND THEN I HAD TEENAGERS.
If you enjoy this book, you'll also like Yates' essays, which are archived on the site for Today's Christian Woman magazine. Parents of college students will be blessed by another book written by the Yates' sons, THE INCREDIBLE FOUR-YEAR ADVENTURE: FINDING REAL FAITH, FUN, AND FRIENDSHIP AT COLLEGE.
I highly recommend Yates' book for young moms, even going so far as to say it's my "Bible of parenting." I've given away so many copies of this book to women in need of encouragement, and I've read and reread it dozens of times myself. Although many more recent books have been written on this topic, this is one of the absolute best.

Dr. Goldenberg's Cannons of CommerceReview Date: 2002-09-19
Martial laws for businessReview Date: 2002-09-02
What would Sun-tzu advise corporate directors and executives if he were alive
today? While Dr. Goldenberg is not the first to ask this question, he may be the first to answer it usefully.
His modern-day
"translation" of Sun-tzu's sage advice brings to life timeless wisdom for an everchanging world.
Art 3 offers sound guidance on strategy, citing important legal precedent: Paramount Communications v. Time Inc. (1989)--a case outlining the traits essential for "bone fide" strategic planning, including connection to long-term mission, assessment of threats and opportunities, and ongoing monitoring of progress against plan.
But topics covered here don't all hover at the 30,000+ strategy realm. Some zoom down to earth--to shed light on operational topics such as resource allocation and markets. Innovation and competitive intelligence also receive insightful attention. Extras include appendices, including a superb one on avoiding catastrophic failure.
Corporate directors serious about their oversight duties, as well as executives desiring to steer clear of trouble, will not want to face the future without this inspired guide.
Few Words, Real Intellect.Review Date: 2002-08-22
For this reader the very best of this fine work is in Appendix One - Shareholder Value Debunked. If one accepts that the concept of shareholder value led to the spurious inflation of share value to increase the value of management's stock options, then our current corporate scandals may have been avoided.
Dr. Goldenberg, thank you for sharing your abundant intellectual capital!

"The Three Appendices alone are worth the price of a trip to your favorite bookstore. There, among other highlights, David Goldenberg's brilliant analysis boils down the University of Chicago's contributions to economic literature to something less than two paragraphs." David W. Help for the StruggleReview Date: 2004-04-21
Katherine Murphy lost many dreams with the nightmare of cancer but awoke with the vision of God in her circumstance, and the reality has never dimmed. As she vividly described the loss of physical strength and appearance, Murphy discovered a true identity and inner beauty. Seasons of the year come and go just as our existence depicts the same cycle; however, Katherine Murphy views life as "a world of borrowed time." She seizes each opportunity as a gift. Awake, O Sleeper is her gift to us.
Awake, O Sleeper is an honest exploration of the hatred and blessing of cancer. Katherine Murphy has chosen to buoy others with her own life jacket. I am pleased to recommend a book that will speak for a very long time.
Awake O SleeperReview Date: 2004-02-11
Fear was the biggest enemy - that she might lose her life and leave her two sons and husband. When she renewed her commitment to God, these fears were not over but there was a new peace and she could go where God would lead.
This is a great read for those with cancer and who have close ones struggling with the disease. There can be victory even in the darkest times.
A must read of anyone struggling with illnessReview Date: 2004-01-28
With transparent candor Katherine Murphy expresses deep emotion through her diagnosis and treatment. The reality of her struggles, questions and fears will resonate as we grapple with her for answers. Her insights touch heart and soul as she shares her growing awareness of God's presence in the midst of a painful and frightening time.
We all know women touched by this disease. Katherine's honest journey will offer peace as they see themselves in the mirror, truly loved and cared for by the Shepherd of our souls.
A Search for Healing and TruthReview Date: 2004-01-21
It's obvious that AWAKE, O SLEEPER is written from the heart. Murphy is honest about her fears, the effects of her disease on family relationships, her doubts, and her search for truth. Several of Murphy's poems from her diary are included and they add to the open and vulnerable style of her writing. The author's descriptive passages and use of word images provided interesting and easy reading.
Murphy's story is a testimony of God's faithfulness and grace. She was strengthened through her battle with cancer, saw good arise from bad circumstances, and discovered the true meaning of life.
AWAKE, O SLEEPER will be helpful and encouraging for anyone struggling with cancer or other life-threatening diseases. Murphy provides hope by sharing her own experience and her faith in a loving God.

Best Leadership Book I've Ever ReadReview Date: 2008-10-14

Simple yet IngeniousReview Date: 2008-10-08
In a nut shell this might be my favorite leadership book of all times because it touched equally on every aspect of my calling as a leader.
As a side note I was also able to attend Willow's Leadership Summit at a local simulcast. It was the best leadership experience of my life to date. Every minute spent with Bill Hybels in his books or at the Summit, is worth its weight in pure gold!
Nuggets of Leadership WisdomReview Date: 2008-09-06
Axiom is one of the most practical books on church leadership in our day. I found myself putting most chapters into practice the same day I read them. Those familiar with WillowWorld will recognize many (if not all) the book's principles from previous Leadership Summits or Hybels' sermons. For me, the book was both a great review and a kick in the seat to go lead better, and lead better in specific ways.
Axiom reminded me once again of the importance of leading daily, improving myself and my church regularly, not settling for incremental growth, and the absolute necessity of church leaders fighting for the advancement of the kingdom. I recommend this book to all churchworld leaders.
Speed of the Leader, Speed of the TeamReview Date: 2008-08-20
Amen to that vote for lifelong learning, also affirmed in the "Book Bucket" one of 20 buckets in my book, Mastering The Management Buckets: 20 Critical Competencies for Leading Your Business or Non-profit. Consequently, I was eager to read the latest book from Bill Hybels, one of the most gifted leaders I've ever met. Axiom, with 76 pithy leadership proverbs, doesn't disappoint.
"Speed of the leader, speed of the team," was and is one of Bill's oft-mentioned axioms. Few leaders make this pronouncement because the camera immediately focuses in on them. As the first president of Willow Creek Association, I watched Hybels up close and he always shared that core value confidently, yet humbly. His walk and his talk backed it up. He writes, "If you cannot say, `Follow me,' to your followers--and mean it--then you've got a problem, a big one."
He elaborates. "Follow my values. Follow my integrity. Follow my work ethic, my commitment, and my communication patterns. Fight as I fight. Focus as I focus. Sacrifice as I sacrifice. Love as I love. Repent as I repent. Admit wrong as I admit wrong. Endure hardship as I endure hardship." Then he concludes this one-page proverb with the whole point of it. "When requisite actions back them up, these are the words that set followers' hearts soaring."
Scan the 76 mini-chapter titles and you'll be pulled into the street-smart, God-smart wisdom. They include: Language Matters, Make the Big Ask, Hire Tens, The Dangers of Incrementalism, Never Say Someone's No for Them, The Tunnel of Chaos (a key idea in my Culture Bucket), Disagree Without Drawing Blood, Admit Mistakes and Your Stock Goes Up, and Arrive Early or Not at All.
Warning! Don't carelessly toss these axioms into your repertoire without understanding the biblical and leadership context. In my days at Willow, "Don't Screw Up" was a common benediction at meetings--but it created anxiety, not blessing. The leader knew how to communicate it, but the lieutenants didn't.
