Perfect book at Perfect Time

This was one of those books that we happened to introduce our daughter to at the perfect time. She is 5.5, loves fairy tales, and has recently been very interested in Peter Pan, and we are teaching her about maps. She loved the book right away! She loves to have an adult read her the directions while she moves her finger around on the map. She also loves finding interesting items/people in the busy map pictures (think "Where's Waldo"). From an educational standpoint, with this book she was able to quickly understand how to use coordinate grids, keys, scale, cardinal and ordinal directions, and geographical vocabulary, all without the book being overtly didactic. Rather, it was just a fun story she could be a part of (and learning these things was an inherent by-product). I would guess most 4-8 year olds, but especially those who like fairy tale and pretend play, will enjoy this.

This is a great book that the whole family enjoys. It's fun to pick a map and since everyone knows the fairy tales already- to make new endings or stories and characters based on the wonderful maps. I've bought more of these as baby shower gifts to add to family libraries.

I have as much fun with it as my daughter!

This book is great, it really brings life to the fairy tales like Snow White and even Peter Pan with big colorful maps of everything you read about in the stories. We have a lot of fun going over the map, and I really think for a youngster 4-7 or so it is perfect for their age and imagination. It really puts a picture to the story, and makes the fairy tales all the more real.

The maps are very colorful and vibrant, and really took some imagination and time to put together. There are a lot of fun things packed in, I really enjoy it as much as my daughter. Haven't reviewed many things but HAD to write one for this because every parent needs this on the bookshelf.

Great Book!

We bought this book for my daughter when she was 4 and heavily into the world of princesses (especially Snow White) and fantasy. She had the book for months before she ventured off the Snow White page. There is so much to do and see with this book, and it can be easily adapted for multiple ages. This book is an especially good companion to reading some of these classics for the first time (Peter Pan, Alice in Wonderland, Snow White, and others). While the older child will memorize the maps and whiz through the hidden pictures rather quickly, all kids will enjoy the creative process of studying the map and imagining what else happens. We have fun asking questions about where other scenes from these books could happen on the map and making our own maps from there.

More than elementary

"Elementary" and "My Dear Watson" do appear in these stories, but not together in the same phrase. That out of the way, these are absorbing stories that reward the rereading with gentle humor, action, cultural and linguistic ("Halloa!") history, and even "mystery."

I use the quotation marks advisedly. Part of the secret of Holmes' near-mystical powers is that Doyle consciously controls how much of the mystery he reveals in advance, so that in most stories even an aspiring Holmes can not dope out the mysteries based on the information given. This reveals more about the author than the stories, making Doyle interesting enough to make me want to know more, so I read Martin Booth's The Doctor and the Detective: A Biography of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, and Doyle's life story is every bit as interesting as the ones he creates.

I have been a fan of Sherlock Holmes from the time I was a boy. I am not alone. How else could you explain the longevity of a character who was created primarily as a mass entertainment in the Strand Magazine, the Victorian equivalent of a television show. But, unlike his contemporaries in the Strand, Holmes has gained immortality. As time passes, he moves in and out of fashion, sometimes newly popular and cool, and at others hopelessly old fashioned and quaint. But, there's something about that monomaniacal probably bi-polar, self destructive and vain character that keeps him bouncing back.
I have many editions of Holmes stories, in print, in film and in television episodes, most remarkably and satisfyingly, the Granada series with Jeremy Brett, but I had to have this one.
In most of the collections the one thing that is achingly absent is the series of drawings by Sydney Paget. In "The Original Illustrated Sherlock Holmes," that defect is corrected.
"Here," the flyleaf proclaims, "are the original Sherlock Holmes stories ... as they first appeared in the British Magazine, the Strand." These are facsimiles of the pages of the magazine, so the layout of the narrative in two columns with illustrations inserted in the text, is exactly as it was a hundred years ago, down to the choice of font.
All of the stories are not here. This is not a "Complete Sherlock Holmes." (That volume, sadly, is out of print and is only available, in limited quantities, at some booksellers.) However, all of the stories that were published in their own volumes as The Adventures, The Memoirs, and The Return are here, as well as the serialization of The Hound of the Baskervilles. So, since the stories are available elsewhere, I shall concentrate on the illustrations which are really what make this volume distinctive.
Sydney Paget, who along with Sir John Tenniel, pretty much defined Nineteenth and Early Twentieth Century illustration, is the source of much of how we visualize Holmes. He is the man who created the cape and deerstalker that has come to be most associated with the character. (The calabash pipe was the contribution of stage actor William Gillette.) In Paget's illustrations we see Holmes expertly portrayed in all his bi-polar glory, from his languid despair over the lack of imagination in crime to the monomaniacal pursuit of a clue once his interest is aroused. The clients who seek his aid and the villains he threatens are no less clearly drawn. Paget is meticulous in his presentation of significant detail and, as good illustrations should, match perfectly with the moment in the text when the imaginative "snapshot" is taken. He is, perhaps, at his most impressive, though, when the scene calls for darkness, as in the attack by the Hound. The brilliant highlights surrounded by the subtle grays, with just enough detail to suggest the scene, cast against almost complete darkness, is pure genius. Paget is a master of light. As far as I know, this is the only place where the original illustrations and the text appear together and fully justifies its purchase even if, as I have, you possess many other versions of the tales.

Sherlock Holmes is one enduring character, written with the analytical reader in mind, with Conan Doyle presenting the logic and the reasoning as detailed as the story itself.

This particular edition, is the perfect one. Comfortably large size, easy on the eyes, hardbound is elegant and somehow I found it very easy to position it anyways I wanted, whether I was sitting upright with the book on the desk, or when in travel with the book on my lap, lying on my side with the book on the left. I thought this is important to mention , now ofcourse to the content..

The higlight of this edition is the illustration collection by Sydney Paget, as they appeared when it was first published. It is significant to read the stories with Sydney Paget's illustrations, since Sydney Paget practically defined the way Sherlock Holmes appeared. though Conan Doyle's descriptins can lead one to visualize Holmes, it was Sydney who set it on paper. and the fact that he was working along with Conan Doyle, brings in the authenticity and approval of the visual representation of the stories. Sydney Paget ofcourse is a master illustrator, with fascinating black and white illustrations capturing all the drama in the stories.

The book contains,
37 short stories and a complete novel from The Strand Magazine. With all 356 original illustrations by Sidney Paget.

Stories included are
The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, published in The Strand between July, 1891 and December, 1892 (12 stories);
The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes. Published in The Strand as additional episodes between December, 1892 and November, 1893 (12 stories);
The Hound of the Baskervilles, published in The Strand between August, 1901 and April, 1902; and
The Return of Sherlock Holmes, published in The Strand between October, 1903 and January, 1905 (13 stories).

This is a very extensive collection of Sherlock Holmes stories, although the collection is not comprehensive - the stories contained in The Case Book of Sherlock Holmes are missing, and the Study in Scarlet is absent as well. The illustrations are quite good, and occur at a frequency of about once a page, and add - surprisingly - a great deal to the narrative. I highly recommend this collection if you have not been exposed to Sherlock Holmes or if you are looking to consolidate your collection in a single, tightly-bound, illustrated volume.

Simply magnificent!

This book contains some of the greatest mystery stories the world has ever known. Throughout the book, through the eyes of Holmes' friend and assistant Watson, who recalls the things he sees and hears while in his friends company. This book also features illustrations that create a further interest in the story itself. Doyle shows his genious by leading the reader throughout each story (while successfully hooking them) and providing them with all the necessary clues to solve it. Of course none of it ever ties up in your mind which further compells you to read on faster and faster. When always at the very end, you see how Sherlock's genious (kindly provided by Doyle's genious) ties everything together very effectively by using the famous deducted theory which was concocted by Doyle and is used in every single Sherlock Holmes novel/story. This is a fabulous book and it will make you thirst for more. This is not a book to pass up!

This guide throughly reviews almost every possible paddling destination in the Eastern 2/3rds of North Carolina. The entries provide great details on the runs including drops and difficulties to be aware of before attempting the trip. Descriptions of put-in and take-out locations are well done. Each run includes minimum paddling levels where they apply. A well done guide book.

Pro's: It was interesting to read about the actors and their were plenty of interesting photos. I like reading the comments from the actors on certain episodes.

Cons: The episode guide was good, but it was something I could care less about. I wanted to see more behind the scenes facts and this book gave me what I already knew. Also the quiz at the end was impossible. I've been watching the show since it started, and the questions are based on details that are impossible for even me to remember and the only way you'd remember them is if you taped each episode and/or took notes from each episode. I read what the other people said about the book and thought it would be great, instead it was a dissappointment.

Over all: Don't get this book unless you are a NEW fan and don't know anything. Also don't even try the quiz!

Fabulous Book, I really enjoy it!

An exciting and endearing wartime love story.

Review Date: 2001-08-25
I have 3 favorite novels which I reread every couple of years. Like old friends, I know that I can always turn to them and be sure of several hours of deep pleasure. This is one of those novels. PASTORAL was written during World War 2 and concerns two young people who are serving in the military, but as the title indicates, this is not your typical war novel. Peter Marshall is a veteran pilot of an RAF Wellington bomber, even though he is still a very young man. The flying scenes are excellent, filled with suspenseful atmosphere and excitement. But when he is not in the air, he is the kind of person who takes delight in the simple pleasures of life, rambling over the countryside and fishing with his crew. And after he meets a lovely WAAF officer, Gervase Robertson, who has just joined the signals staff at his airbase, it doesn't take him long to fall in love for the first time. The love story of these two rather innocent and ordinary young people is as real as you'll find in literature, perfectly tracing the progress of their attraction and growing feeling for each other, all intensified by the immense conflict in which they play their small part. True to that time, this does not mean that they are in bed by the second date--no, these are typical, decent youngsters who accept the idea that that sort of thing must wait until marriage. Gervase does not want to give up her part in the war effort to get married, and the tension begins to affect Peter's flying and his relationship with his crew. As one of the senior officers complains exasperatedly, "The great adventure on this station isn't bombing Germany. They don't think anything of that. Falling in love is the big business here." Eventually we see that maybe falling in love is the big business after all, as the young people come to exemplify all that is best, all that is worth fighting to preserve. Nevil Shute wrote several excellent novels, but I believe that this is his best. It is a shame that it is so hard to find, but used copies are available--and well worth the hunt.

The Young Always Believe They're Immortal

Nevil Shute seems to be a very underrated author. After his On the Beach and A Town Like Alice, the rest of his works are almost totally ignored by both the critics and the public, which is a pity as almost all of his works are finely written and have something worthwhile to say.

Pastoral was written during WWII, and from a purely British viewpoint, unlike so many of the war books that were written long after the conflict by so many Americans. As such there is a totally different atmosphere to this book, a quietness, an acceptance of the conditions and requirements of the war as just something that is there, part of the daily routine. And it is within this atmosphere that Neville constructs a fine love story between the very experienced bomber pilot Peter Marshal (at age 22!) and a W.A.A.F signals officer, Gervase Robertson.

As perhaps is typical for war-time love stories, the war itself provides the conflict, the friction between the lovers, as Peter is duty-bound to continue flying bombing missions, and Gervase believes her own duties are important to the course of the war, and should not be given up merely to get married. Her decline of Peter's offer of marriage sends Peter into a mental tail-spin, seriously impacting his efficiency as a flyer. How this conflict is resolved and the events that happen because of this conflict form the main portion of this book. Before reaching that point, however, we are treated to a view of English morality and customs of the day, a code that says one mustn't go off alone with a member of the opposite sex, that married woman are expected to keep house, not have jobs, where the woman must defer to the man. A view that might seem dreadfully stifling and old-fashioned to a reader of today's world, but it shown in such a non-obtrusive way that the reader can accept it without question. Until, that is, the reader finishes the book, and realizes that Neville has been quietly showing (and mildly satirizing) both the good and bad qualities of such a code. This is typical of Nevil's writing - his points are made far more by showing, rather than telling, always a mark of a fine writer. Also noteworthy is the attitude towards the war that is displayed by all the characters here - that death is an everyday happening, but it won't happen to me, it only happens to someone else. An attitude that seems to belong to every young person.

Nevil's prose style tends towards the descriptive, especially of the countryside and everyday actions. His dialogue in this book is loaded with English slang, very typical of actual speech patterns of the day, but this does at times make it somewhat hard for the poor modern American reader to decode what is being said. And some of Nevil's expertise as an avionics engineer shows in his descriptions of the aircraft and the functioning of various parts of these machines, at times obviously assuming that reader knows more about aircraft than is normally the case. These, however, are very minor negatives, almost totally subsumed by the engagement of the reader in the story of these two very well realized characters.

One decided negative that has nothing to do with Nevil's writing ability is the production quality of the hardbound reprint edition. The typeface used is very close to an old typewriter font, with thin serifs and a fairly small point size, and the printing press seemed to have severe difficulty with maintaining an even ink flow - at places the print fades to near illegibility. This all makes for a very rough impact on your eyes. A pity that this fine work has such a botched job of production.

Regardless of the quality of the printing, however, this book deserves a look, if nothing else just to see how a romance really should be written, as opposed to the material that passes for 'romance' on the book racks of today.

What is most remarkable about Pastoral is the way it manages to blend love and tragedy in an almost seamless manner. What would have been a rather conventional love story is transformed into something very different by the ever-present risk of death. RAF pilot Peter Marshall and WAAF signals officer Gervase Robinson go through an awkward and sometimes amusing courtship seemingly unconcerned about the fact that each one of his bomber missions over Germany could very easily be his last - indeed, some of the characters we meet during the story are lost over Germany. That they are able to function in a reasonably normal manner in the most terrifyingly abnormal of circusmstances is a tribute to the strength of the human spirit. In a way, this foreshadows Nevil Shute's much later book On the Beach, in which people are able to function day-to-day despite knowing that the world is soon coming to an end. A lesser writer than Shute probably would have made Pastoral heavy-handed and preachy, but there is almost none of that. All in all, a superb book, a truly timeless story despite its setting.
As an aside, the last few paragraphs of the story make me wonder whether it is based on true events.

... and bringing it to the flight station marks the unusual beginning of an exquisite and delicate love story between RAF pilot Peter Marshall and flight officer Gervase Robertson.

The story takes place in the midst of world war II terror and describes, in spellbinding detail, the flight missions over Germany, the dangers of cross fire and courage, during times when others have fear.

Peter's cockiness (not always at the right times), competence (in dodging enemy fire and bringing his crew home), and courage (in face of danger) win the reader's heart and make him a hero at his home station, even though he comes very close to losing is all: his aircraft, his crew and Gervase.

A marvelous story, despite its unusual start: catching a fish!

Perhaps this is Nevil Shute's best; his detail about the cold technicalities of cockpit war activity, set against the depths of an unforgettable love story makes "Pastoral" stand out above anything to be imagined. He just never ceases to surprise his readers!

This is, in my opinion, Nevil Shute's best book, surpassing even such justifiably popular titles as "On the Beach" and "A Town like Alice". With restraint and a simple, moving style Nevil Shute brings out the best in human spirit by telling this story of young people rising to the dangers and challenges of war and prevailing through dedication, comradeship and love. Why is a book like this out of print when bookstore shelves are full of stories about addicts, perverts and criminals? We desperately need more people like Nevil Shte's characters to serve as role models.

Excellent book, a bit wordy and a little more along the doctoral level than PTA level, but great nonetheless.

Susan Purdy explains cake making for the home baker. I truely appreciate her providing the recipes with weights. Makes baking much easier. She also provides several pages of many conversion tables that I found very useful. Recommend this book for the new and experienced baker. Bake and enjoy, your table companions will appreciate your efforts.

I spotted this book at the local library and it inspired me to bake a birthday cake for a coworker. The carrot cake was a hit and I heard, over and over, that it was "the best carrot cake I've ever eaten in my entire life!" Requests followed for the next birthday and once again, I heard, "This is best cake I've ever had in my entire life." Past attempts have received compliments, but never to this extreme. I certainly couldn't take the credit for Purdy's recipes, tips and variations. As previous reviewers have written, Purdy goes beyond the recipe to explain (simply) the chemistry behind things. I learned that the processing of the cocoa makes all the diverence in achieving the red velvet color of the cake of that same name. The only negative comment that I could possibly have is to say that I was disappointed to not find a recipe for a German Chocolate cake. I've checked this book out repeatedly from the library and now plan to buy my very own copy!

Wow! This book rules...

I borrowed this from the library and have renewed it twice. I'm ready to buy! My son and husband fought over the last slice of the 1-2-3-4 Cake and want me to make it again. I prefer to bake cakes from scratch; they prefer that "light, airy" texture of boxed cakes. This cookbook convinced me to sift the flour - and it made the difference. I like the detail given; it's not just do this, do that. I got an understanding of why the steps were included. A really terrific cake-recipe book!

The aeration process advocated for shortening type cakes really turns out a light fine textured cake. In addition to great extra cake recipes this book also marches pretty much in lock step with the Betty Crocker Red Book basic tutorials such as for egg, cakes and the ingredient sub list, which is something that I really like.

G. D. Baum is a terrific writer. The book opens with a scene in which the main character is making love to his partner who has cancer. The emotion is intense and is hightened as each new character is introduced. One is suicidal. Another is a grandfatherly man who has seen his share of crime.

Baum does a great job of weaving facts about martial arts into the story and this is the part I didn't expect. This made it a great read for both genders. I would not have chosen a book about martial arts, but I love a book from which I can learn. This one certainly fit the bill.

First the disclaimer, I'm a 4th degree black belt in Shaolin Kempo, the same system the author (and the main character) studies.

For the martial arts scenes, they were crisp, well written and provided an interesting insight into the internal arts. They also reminded me to practice my Tai Chi more. :-)

This book isn't a murder mystery, lots of people get killed, and it is very clear who done what to who. It is a book about relationships, not nice ones either. It is more about one man's struggle to improve himself and those around him while playing with the cards life dealt him.

I enjoyed this book and recommend it for those who like an engaging read. The good guys aren't paragons of absolute virtue, but that is often how it is.

excellent read!

Interesting and entertaining. A story of love, war, friendship and betrayal that will keep you reading well past bedtime! I can't wait to know Fletcher and look forward to reading the sequel.
Keep writing, G. D. Baum!

I read it in one sitting!! I think that the interweaving of East and West sets this book apart from others. The plot is complicated enough to hold one's interest and although the Grandfather is my favorite character the author manages to make all the other players believeable. It is clear that a sequel is in the wings and I will be eagerly awaiting its appearance.

PI Henry Cho needs assistance from PI Lock Tourmaline. Cho needs someone he can trust to watch his back. Cho is Susan Heung's bodyguard and friend of Lock. Susan is the daughter of "old man Heung." Heung is beginning to turn the family business over to his children. Susan runs the legitimate part of the business. Her brother Jason is taking over the illegal part, drugs. Cousin Bodacious is upset and wants a summit meeting. He insists that he and the "Old Man" meet and insists that Susan and Jason be included. Cho suspects that Susan is planning to assassinate Cousin Bodacious. Susan and Jason's presence was significant.

When Cho tells Lock "No one will have a gun." Lock decides to bring Grandfather with him. Grandfather "is the embodiment of the paradoxical truth that the greatest martial artists were so often gentle, humble men."

Lock was beat up and picked on as a child. His father insisted he learn martial arts. Grandfather taught Tae Kwon Do. "Your ignorance breeds the fear." "You'll never be afraid again of anyone, even your father. You'll respect him, but you won't fear him."

Susan has been grooming Cho to run for congress. She knew it would be beneficial to have connections in the Federal Government.

Lock's lover, Janice has terminal cancer. He loves her very much and is attempting to cope with her illness and imminent death. Her daughter looks up to Lock as a daughter looks to her father. His ex-wife's love beats her. The summit goes bad and "Old Man Heung" is murdered. Can life get any more complicated for Lock?

G.D Baum offers readers a winner in "Point and Shoot." The title refers to cops doing what cops are not supposed to do, taking care of problems in an illegal way. The plot of this book is fascinating. Baum takes readers on a roller coaster ride with twists and turns along the way. From the first page I was hooked. I didn't lay "Point and Shoot" down until the last page. When Lock describes making love to a woman with terminal cancer I found myself in tears. The tenderness with which Lock deals with his lover made me think that Baum may have suffered through such a battle. Janice is a stronger character bringing to life the plight of breast cancer patients. For me, the mystery took a back seat to this couple's relationship. The martial arts scenes were enthralling. Lock is deadly without a gun. Well-done G.D. Baum! I highly recommend "Point and Shoot" to mystery and fiction enthusiasts.

I bought this book for my daughter for Christmas, she is going through a "I love Porsche" phase right now. We currently live just down the road from Zuffenhausen, Germany and the book couldn't have been more appropriate. She has thoroughly enjoyed the pictures and has learned so much about how the company and car designs have evolved over the years.

Let me confess right off, I absolutely love cars designed by Porsche, I have always found the car to be sexy and elegant. When i see someone pull up next to me in a Carerra with the top down, I just sit and stare with envey. As for this book, it is quite simply fantastic, it is easy to read and well researched, almost scholarly and the images are crisp and well placed throughout the book. You see the evolution of the automaker and get a real feel for what has made the company so successful. If you have any interest in Porsche or just cars in general, then I highly recommend this book...pricy yes, but well worth it...the car and this book.

I found this book not only informative, but interesting, and insightful. The pictures were plentiful, but not over done, beautiful, and well described. I will undoubtedly have this book for the rest of my life, and is a must for every car-enthusiast!!

Early A.A. was a Christian Fellowship.Real Twelve Step Fellowship History. It emphasized Bible study, prayer, and Quiet Time.Good Morning!: Quiet Time, Morning Watch, Meditation, and Early A.A.. It utilized lots of different religious literature and devotionals to enhance the spiritual growth of its members.Dr. Bob and His Library: A Major A.A. Spiritual Source, and Anne Smith's Journal, 1933-1939: A.A.'s Principles of Success. And here is one of those authors who has the courage and ability to link "spirituality" and "religion" and "twelve steps" to the heart of Christian recovery techniques that produced the astonishing cures of early A.A.A New Way In: Reaching the Heart of a Child of God in Recovery with His Own, Powerful, Historical Roots God Bless, Dick B.

I am Bert Newton, pastor, Creekside Baptist Church, writing through my wife's account, as our purchases are made through it. L.G. Parkhurst, Jr. has made a powerfully challenging statement through this book. It causes one to focus on the practical life change that will occur with Christ at the helm of anyone's 12-step program. He helps a person to realize that to be truly effective, it takes the "new creation" power that comes from the Lord Himself living in us and helping one overcome their addictions and/or ungodly behavior. I read it as a book, but know that it would work for anyone to use for devotional study.

The New Serenity Prayer Edition is Larger and Better

Be certain you buy the "New Serenity Prayer Edition" of this book, for it has 12 new daily readings on The Serenity Prayer keyed to each of the 12 Steps for a total of 84 readings (7 readings per week for 12 weeks on each of the 12 Steps). The new edition is also 68 pages longer than the older edition, but sells for the same price as the older edition. The book is easier to read and study with a Workbook on the 12 Steps, called The Twelve Steps Journey, as a part of the book. Unfortunately for some, there has been some confusion between the two editions, and the older edition should be showing out of print, but there are still some older copies being sold. I did change the title from "the Twelve Step Journey" to "the Twelve Steps Journey" and I did add the subtitle to the new edition: "New Serenity Prayer Edition." I hope this helps you buy the newest edition, and I am thankful that so many gave such wonderful reviews for the earlier edition. The latest edition is just better and larger.

Prayer Steps to Serenity is truly beautiful inside and out. The cover and the reviews drew me into buying the book. Then, I was surprised to see the picture of the Tree that began each new step take on new growth and leaves as I read through the book.

From my experience, this book has captured and presented the basic keys to Serenity and changing your life. My Sponsor and I often talk about the spiritual aspects of our Fellowship and I bought her a copy after she saw mine.

The first edition helped me find serenity and sobriety in a way only God could have directed. I was on the brink of destruction and this book helped me find my way back. The influence was overwhelming. I have also read the recent, expanded edition and use it to help maintain my serenity and sobriety.

"Prayer Steps" is so powerful, it helped me tie my belief in God and Christianity to the Twelve Steps in a way that changed my life. Using this Twelve Step Journey along with my Faith, I have managed to return to sanity and keep my family and friends.
