Simple, concise and very insightful; a must read for any Reiki practioner. Written for someone who is at least a Reiki I, it gives the insights as to why first treat yourself, then others; as well as putting the 5 precepts into practice into your daily life. Also covered are just what does a Reiki practioner do; and what limits should be observed, including when to let go. This is a book about Reiki from the point of view of a Usui Master; there is nothing in here about "channeling" or other modalities or non-Usui practices incorporated into many other books on Reiki. It assumes you know the basics. It has a delicate balance of the practical and the spiritual. I feel any Reiki library is very incomplete without this work.

The book about Reiki which I give all my Reiki students.

There are many books available which talk about the Usui System of Natural Healing (Reiki). Earlene Gleisner's "Reiki In Everyday Living" is the book I give my Reiki students or to those interested in learning about Reiki. These short essays and poems give the best illustration I've found for the "feel" of the practice of Reiki. I highly recommend it.

A Great Read for Reiki Newcomers and Veterans Alike

Reiki in Everyday Living is one of the most accessible Reiki books on the market. Author Earlene Gleisner features, through a series of essays and poems, practical advice on using Reiki for the self and for others. Her background in hospice work makes the section on Reiki for the Dying one of the strongest elements of the book...particularly helpful since the majority of other Reiki books don't address this very important subject. This book assists all Reiki students in furthering their appreciation of the healing system through the author's use of personal experience. Her commitment to the system is obvious in the text of this book. As a Reiki teacher, I find that I am often recommending it to new students looking for an easy-to-read review of what Reiki is all about and to experienced students wanting to get a fresh look at an old friend. I highly recommend it to anyone wanting to own a book on Reiki...you will go back to it again and again.

One of the most warm-hearted Reiki Masters one could hope to encounter, Earlene Gleisner, R.N. displays her enormous compassion for humankind and her great gift for lively storytelling in this little book that is worth its weight in hopes and dreams come true.

As her writing shows, this genuine person, this Teacher demonstrates how *standing in one's own center* and allowing Reiki to *flow through* is at the core of wellness. Life-force energy is like an ocean in which we human beings thrive she is telling us. It is a natural blessing of life, and ever-present ebb-and-flow, and we are all free to enjoy it.

Changes, decisions and questions are part of all of our lives. "Reiki in Eeveryday Living" offers a method for attaining personal clarity within that process.

A *must read* for Reiki practitioners and anyone interested in a common sense approach to natural healing.

Earlene Gleisner did more than just write another book on Reiki; in sharing her experiences and insights as Reiki Master teacher, she provides a most useful tool for those who have just had their first level attunements and are about to begin their journey as Reiki practitioners. Students will always find there enlighthened words of wisdom born out of steady faith in the process of life and how Reiki can and will help them live their lifes consciously. It helps Reiki students understand their initial feelings and uncertainties when starting their path towards self-discovery. Even non-reikians will benefit from this book because it is in fact addressed to all human beings who are searching for understanding the events in their own lifes and are ready to take full responsibility for themselves, their choices and decisions and then learn from the results. I will always be grateful to Earlene for having so compassionately shared her deep knowledge on the workings of Reiki in my everyday living.

There wasn't a subject in the test that was not covered in this book as well. This book is a much easier read than the ANNA curriculum. Going to war in Mexico

Review Date: 2007-07-05
Peter F. Stevens does an outstanding job in bringing to life the issues that permeated and greatly harmed the American armies of General Zachary Taylor and General Winfield Scott from 1846 to 1848. At the core was American nativism, hatred and fear of newly arrived Catholic immigrants mainly from Ireland and Germany. Recruited nearly at the pier, these soldiers had no loyalty nor a real investment in their future as Americans. What loyalty they had was toward their Catholic faith. Meeting them in the army was a cadre of immigrant hating junior officers who often imposed discipline more severe than found in European armies. The result was the highest desertion rate of any war the United States ever fought. More important, the Mexicans took advantage of immigrant soldiers' unhappiness and formed the St. Patrick's Battalion, led by John Reily, that distinguished itself in battle against former comrades and messmates until their defeat and capture. The author shows how severe the courts martial were that resulted in the execution of fifty deserters and the lashing and branding of others including John Reily. That this series of events became a downside of Manifest Destiny and a forerunner of the Civil War becomes prominent in the text. This worthy book is a fine read, well researched, militarily and historically sound, and serves as a real contribution to the field of military and social American history.

A History of Prejudice and Heroism

Throughout Mexico, one can hear of the legend of the SanPatricios, a battalion of soldiers in the U.S.-Mexico War that wasmade up almost entirely of deserters from the U.S. Army. Predominately Irish and/or Catholic, the San Patricios fought well for the Mexicans -- and they suffered for it significantly when the U.S. finally won the war.

Stevens does an excellent job of telling the story of the battalion, the history behind its foundation, and the punishment its members faced after the war. Adding to the interest of the story is the role that many of those in the U.S. Army during the U.S.-Mexico War went on to play pivotal roles in the U.S. and CSA armies during the Civil War.

An engaging history lesson of both the Mexican-American War and the Anti-Catholic/Immigrant prejudice of Nativists and West Pointers who would later be made famous by the American Civil War. This is as much a story of persecution by bigoted officers as it is an Order of Battle for the conflict. All the major battles of the war are covered with maps and detailed first hand accounts of what happened.

Well-educated and brilliant officers were of differing opinions about the legitimacy of the war, the treatment of German and Irish Catholics, and the tactics used on the field. It was surprising to me to read the correspondence of figures such as Grant, Lee, Sherman, Taylor, Scott, Bragg, and a host of others, illuminating their personal feelings on both sides of those issues and how the experience of the war changed the sentiments and conduct of many of those same officers. This would be reflected in the Civil War some 20 years later.

An intriguing example of the use of "flying batteries" as an innovative use of Artillery showed one of the reasons an outnumbered, and arguably out classed, military was able to defeat an enemy on foreign soil so far away from home.

The story revolves around the main character, the leader of the "San Patricos" and as a counterpoint, an established Irishman settled in the country and the Army. They both faced the same insults and persecutions, and the same offers and temptations to change sides and ironically, both men end up being promoted from enlisted men to commissioned officers in the two opposing armies.

I imagined at first that this would be a story of a man's internal conflict of having to choose loyalty to church over country; though a powerful theme of the book, this was not so much the case. The stronger case was made that the largest desertion rate in the history of the US Army occurred at a time when because of their nationality and religion, men were treated as less deserving of respect and dignity resulting in harsher treatment than "native born Americans". Punishments for identical infractions were much more degrading and humiliating for "foreigners" than for "Americans" in the same unit. A lesson in the effects of fair and equal treatment could not be stronger given to the American Army and indeed this did change. The disturbing part of this history is the undeniable cover up by first the Army and then the Government of the United States for over 120 years. This book should be on the required professional development reading list for Officers and NCOs alike.

Mr. Stevens writing puts emotion and personality to the characters and events described by using copious amounts of official Courts-Martial transcripts, Government Archives records of Great Britain, Ireland, Mexico, and the United States. In addition he draws from the personal diaries, journals, and letters, of the men and women involved. He also cites official war correspondence from the officers of both sides, and newspaper articles of the day.

A must read for the student of Irish-American and Vietnam history. Goes into detail of the anti-Catholic/anti-emmigrant climate of America in the the 1840's. A story of America's first war of agresssion against another independent nation, shows the beggings of Americas imperialistic wars.A good companion text for istorians of America's involvement in South East Asia,"if we do not learn from history we are cursed to repeat it."

For anyone interested in aviation you will be amazed at the detailed way he puts you right in the cockpit. I was an Air Force brat and grew up around pilots from that era. This book gave me a new appreciation for their skills and their service. It also brought back memories I had long forgotten. The little sayings that meant nothing to me as kid were placed in proper perspective. I have read all of the books in this series and enjoyed every one of them.

I have read most of Mark berent's books and they are without a doubt the very best. I know that thye are based in part for sure of real events that took place. Rolling Thunder makes reference to several people and events that I know for a fact did occur, such as the person from the 354'th who shot back at a ship , the Turkestan in Cam Pha and got hauled into a court martial trial along wioht the C.O. The names and some of the story regarding that were changed. Berent makes you feel like you are there along with those guys that busted their butts to fight a war that they were not allowed to win. He has a way of creating characters and other things that are truly realistic, flight line up cards, Frag order etc. IT is very hard to start one of his novels and put it down. THe only bad thing is that you realize tha tyou are almost done reading before long. His knowledge of airplanes and creating a scen for the reader is unmatched by any writer that I know of. I've read all of the books I own several times.

Best Vietnam Air War read

Review Date: 2004-07-28
I've read a number of books on the Vietnam War -- fiction and non-fiction. Rolling Thunder is one of the best. This book is the start of a five book series that covers the Vietnam war pretty much from the big American buildup era of 1965 to our last big air battle -- Linebacker II.
For a novel, Rolling Thunder reads like a memoir, and I guess that's because it partially is one for Berent.
His descriptions of air combat are authentic and edge of your seat type stuff. But it is the interactions of the fighter squadron and the wing and big Air Force politics that makes this book a great read.
Rolling Thunder starts with the death of a pilot that was flying with Court Bannister (the hero of these books). The other pilot is not a particularly good stick (or pilot as fighter jocks call them) and manages to prang his F-100 all over the jungle. For Court that's bad, not because he loses a squadmate, but because the guy's a powerful generals son.
The series follows Bannister around for the next seven years and through the last book -- Storm Flight, which ends the war with the Linebacker attacks on N. Vietnam.
Berent manages to weave all the elements of Vietnam -- Saigon dangers, Air Force fighters, Special Forces ground combat and political intrigue in Washington -- all into one story.
The only complaint I had with the series is the inclusion of the obligatory romance in Thailand or some RR spot in every book. The romance element wasn't as entertaining to me, but they are always brief interludes and then its back to work and war.
If you don't know much about the war in Vietnam or the Air Force read these books. They are a good education and entertaining.

We're currently going through Romans at my church, and I have found this commentary to be a FANTASTIC companion piece to our pastor's sermons.

Pastor MacArthur examines each passage and verse in a VERY detailed expository fashion, and really draws out the Biblical principles with attention to Scriptural accuracy.

I heartily recommend this work.

I do find it somewhat ironic that the best price for these is a secular source (Amazon) rather than a Christian distributor, but hey, it's a great work at a great price. I can't complain.

Dr. MacArthur's writings are not for the faint of heart. He says what he means without compromise or sugar-coating. This installment of his New Testament commentary series belongs in the library of the serious seeker, along with Romans 1-8 by Dr. Mac.

His exegesis on the blinding of Israel will open your eyes to the sovereigty, as well as the faithfulness of God. Dr. Mac. has poured over the Old Testament prophecies and Paul's revelation as it was given to him by the Angel, to present the believer with a grand portrait that shows his/her position in Christ, which is necessary for a Godly walk and witness.

Romans was Paul's grand work, and this latter-day divine, Dr. John MacArthur, offers an exposition that is worthy of the divines of old, such as Spurgeon, Gill, Pink, Owen, Tozer, and so many others.

Do you know how many seminaries there are in the US who believe the Bible is the inspired, infallible Word of God and teach it's inerrancy? TEN! That's all out of hundreds! Do you know who John Macarthur is? The President of the Master's Seminary, one of those ten. If you want accurate, well-written commentary by someone who believes the Bible and thinks like it's authors this is the book you need. He explains every part of the Book of Romans in great detail in a way any lay person can understand. Even if you've read the Book of Romans a hundred times, you will learn new things from John's commentary. The Book of Romans is one of the cornerstones of Christianity and the foundation of righteousness. If you are serious about studying Romans, you need this boook. Period.

Long, detailed stories that start simple and just keep getting bigger and better

McManus is an excellent storyteller and his stories on this tape are those that start with a simple problem and expand out into a lengthy tale. My favorite was the story that begins with him trying to tie a fishing fly and how he always seems to be lacking a key component. In this case, it is white hairs from the tail of a calf. As he is venting his frustration, his friend comes in for another purpose and tells him that he saw some calves in a pen that had white tails. At least they are white under the barnyard gunk stuck to them. They get in the car and drive to the farm, and when they arrive they see an entire pen full of calves. He goes to the door to request permission to remove some hair but there is no answer. Three dollars are placed in an envelope for payment along with an explanation of the reason.
He then goes into the pen and the calves are extremely friendly, they begin chewing and licking him to the point where he cannot clip any hairs. His friend is then coaxed into assisting and while he holds the ears, his friend holds the tail. The calf is then spooked and takes off across the barnyard with his friend holding onto the tail. His feet raise furrows of barnyard gunk that remind him of a water skier. His friend ends up against the fence, being cautiously approached by the farmer and a hired hand. Since his friend is articulate, he leaves the friend to fend for himself, but not before he stops back at the door to the house to retrieve his three dollars.
These stories are of the type where I did not laugh out loud, and only occasionally emitted a small chuckle. However, my funny bone was constantly stimulated as I imagined the surfer. Another farm type story is when three men purchase some young pigs and try to haul them home in gunnysacks in the back of a station wagon. The pigs get loose and the erratic driving arouses the suspicions of a police officer. If you have ever chased young pigs, you know exactly what was going on inside that car.

I have always thought that Patrick McManus is the funniest writer on the planet. I read his stories when I need to laugh or relax. Sometimes I irritate my wife by reading it in bed. I try not to laugh out loud, but I only succeed in sounding like I am trying to muffle continuous sneezes.

However, not everyone gets it. I have been shocked by watching people read McManus without so much as a smile (though most start snorting like wild pigs on acid) . My only guess is that getting McManus requires a couple things. First, it requires some understanding of his experiences. He absolutely nails all of the stupid things 'outdoors men (outdoors people)' do and think, but don't want anybody to know about. Second, you have to see the self-deprecating aspect of his humor. Third, you can't look for great literature in integrated books. Patrick McManus is an excellent writer, if you see these as independent stories simply collected in a volume. They are meant for adults who want to laugh at themselves. So, If you are willing to or already meet the above three criteria, you will love this book.

By the way, I am a professor of clinical psychology and (other than worrying a little about McManus) I sometimes recommend this and other McManus books. I do this with people who have racing thoughts and anxiety at bedtime, and when I believe they have the necessary experiences to find it funny. It often works quite well. I think of his stories as little pieces of happiness. (Oh, that even makes me sick to hear. Sorry)

I can not stop thinking about Abbey and Zeke since I finished this book. I just don't want to believe they don't really exist. What a great book!!

Wow!
I bought Sweet Prairie Passion 6 years ago and it's still one of my all time favorites. The entire Savage Destiny series is a classic. The story of Zeke and Abby will never grow old. If you
haven't read the entire Savage Destiny series, be sure that you do so because you wont want to miss out this great series!

Fantastic. Extremely well written. I lost a family member to Typhoon Cobra USS Spence DD 512. Absolutely the best historical read of this tragic event!

Sea Cobra is an exceptionally well written book that is chock full of interesting facts about the typhoons that almost swamped Admiral Halsey's career. I highly recommend it to anyone who is interested in learning about the effect of Mother Nature on even the most powerful armada ever assembled in the Pacific.

A great story and a great story-teller! The most user friendly book I've read. There was no over blown technical term or military acronym that I couldn't understand. You didn't have to have 20 years service time in the Navy to know what was happining to the sailors and what the command leadership was doing right or wrong. You felt you right there with the sailors in their battle to survive! An amazing story of heroes and tragedy. The story of Commander Henry Lee Plage of the destroyer USS Tabber is awesome! He stands 3 times taller than John Wayne ever did! He was a 29 year old reservist with only one and a half years of sea time. He amazingly avoided direct orders and rescued over 50 sailors inside the fury of a killer typhoon (almost a thousand sailors died and many ships were sunk or nearly sunk). The other current book on this event "Halsey's Typhoon" doesn't even come close to the passion or power of "Sea Cobra".

In 2007 two different publishers released two different books on the 1944-1945 typhoons that sank three ships in the U.S. Third Fleet. Under the command of Admiral William Halsey, the U.S. Navy lost more men due to these natural disasters than it did at the battle of Midway. Bob Drury and Tom Clavin's "Halsey's Typhoon" was the first one to make it to book stores and garnered more attention and sales than Buckner F. Melton Jr.'s "Sea Cobra." Given the timing and focus of these two books, this review will compare and contrast the two. In short, there is no question that Melton wrote the better book.

The illustrations of carriers, battleships, oilers, destroyers, and destroyer escorts compared to 30, 60, and 90 foot waves is the best feature of Drury and Clavin's account. It gives landlubbers a good idea of how rough seas are problems for some ships and not for others. The shortcomings of this book, however, are much more significant. First, the book ignores altogether the second typhoon Halsey sailed into. Melton discusses this one, but not at length. This brevity is understandable, the second typhoon did less damage and sank no ships. It does show, though, that the commander and staff of the Third Fleet learned little from their experiences with the first typhoon despite efforts to do so. The problem that Drury and Clavin have is that this second storm undermines their argument that Halsey was largely blameless for sailing into the typhoons.

The mechanics of publishing also favor Melton. Drury and Clavin have only one map. Melton has nine. He also provides an extensive bibliography and footnotes, whereas Drury and Clavin have a brief bibliography and make no effort to provide any sort of documentation on their sources. Drury and Clavin also make a number of basic mistakes when it comes to nautical matters and use maritime terms incorrectly. Examples include "helming" a ship; calling a battle jack a "battle guideon" (an Army term); referring to a ship's mess deck as its "mess hall." They also put generals in the Japanese Navy Ministry and refer to the Army Ministry as the "War Department" (an American term). Stylistically, Melton is the better wordsmith. Drury and Clavin use too many editorializing adverbs ("legendary" or "untold") to exaggerate the significance of their story.

Much more significant is the thesis of each book. Drury and Clavin make Lt. Cmdr. James Marks, captain of the USS HULL, out to be the main villain in this incident. The HULL was one of his ships lost in the first typhoon. This charge seems reasonable at first, but Marks' seamanship does not explain why the USS MONAGHAN and SPENCE sank, nor does it explain a number of close calls on other ships. It seems that the two authors allowed crewmen from the HULL that they interviewed for the book to use the opportunity to settle old scores with Marks. In fact, Drury and Clavin do not spend much time talking about ships other than the HULL while Melton does. Melton also gives much more attention to the post storm investigation. Since Marks was the subject of an official investigation, Drury and Clavin argue this was proof enough of his guilt. The fact that there was no court-martial or that the other captains died in the storm makes this observation rather weak. Melton gives a much more nuanced description of the investigation. Halsey rather than Marks was the main target of the investigation and the board placed primary blame for sailing into the storm on the Admiral. There were a number of mitigating circumstances, though, and Melton is good at describing them. This incident is no black and white morality play.

In short, Melton offers a much better book than Drury and Clavin.

My father served on an aircraft carrier that survived the typhoon Cobra, and I found this book to be a thorough and compelling account of one of the most disastrous events of WW2.

This series is great- not the best writing, but I love it, especially the first books (after #13-15, the series starts to go downhill). Book 12 ended on a huge cliffhanger (if you're a Ryan fan like me) and The Showdown answers those questions. Beware, it is really, really sad. I was almost crying and I never cry while reading books.

I have always enjoyed the adult series of Left Behind books. The kids books are just as good. The kids interact with the characters from the adult series, experience the same events, etc. However, since the main characters are teens, these books can appeal to younger readers. So far, the stories haven't had the ups and downs that the adult series has had. The adult series has books that are a lot more boring than others. The kids series seems to be good in every book. These are not for really young kids, but would be appropriate for young teens. I enjoy them and I am an adult.

I loved the book so much that I couldn't put it down. I read it in less then 24 hours and I am a slow reader. I highly encourage you to read this book. It is safe to read because both the authors are strong Christians and the book is Bible based.

Lionel was hit on the head, and now can't remember anything. He discovers a Bible, and through his new friend Conrad, tries to dsicover who he was. Through a series of drills, the two, along with Melinda and Felica head up a new unit of GC known as Morale Moniters and return to Illinois. Could the answers he is searching for be there?
Meanwhile, Ryan suffers a painful injury and fights for his survival. Is this be the end here on earth for the youngest member of the Young Trib Force?
Just a warning: this is an emotional book, and you should have a box of tissues ready! I loved this book, and the plot really fit together, and charcter development has grown so much through the series, you become so emotionally attached, its hard to let anyone go. This is one of my very favorites in the series, and if you've read the books so far, you need to get this one! The cliffhanger at the end is just wonderful, and I suggest buying book 14 along with it!

This book is great!!!

I really liked this book not only because it informs us about the End Times but it keeps you one the edge of your seat. The way the author brings the kids together and all the exciting events they go through keep you wanting to read all the books in the series. I really liked the way the author makes each character have a different situation which shows that when the Rapture happens anyone can be left behind. Unless of course you are a Christian.

Spiritual Revolution is Michael's answer to our need for a handy sized reference manual on how to carry on throughout our days as we are caught in traffic, standing in line or just frazzeled at the end of the day. I recommend carrying it all times and opening it randomly to read a page, paragraph or just a word for encouragement.

Michael has some kind of a connection to knowledge of a higher source and has so generously shared it by writing this book.

I can't express in words how much this book has done for me. I came across "Spiritual Revolution" at a very opportune time in my life. This book has both inspired and healed me. It's a very simply read, yet profound book. I was just dabbling in spirituality when I began reading "Spiritual Revolution," but I wanted to dive in and swim beyond the horizon by the time I finished it. Besides helping me connect with my spiritual side, this book has helped me overcome everyday fears. It has made me a stronger, more motivated person. I've also learned to forgive and move on...something I'd always had trouble doing in the past. I'm so glad I was lucky enough to find a book so moving and brilliant. My eyes are peeled for the next writings from Michael Goddart.
