One of the things I love about this book is that it's so beautiful to the eye and hand, perfect bound (you can even see the little knots in the gutters) and so intelligently designed, the type font light and airy, enough white space to set the poems off as poems. The translator, Sandy McKinney, a fine poet and noted reviewer, worked closely with Rafael Guillen in Spain ... on these poems. The translations seem flawless and do appropriate honor to the originals which are thought of as unique among contemporary Latin poetry in their emotional power and spiritual overtones. There is, indeed, a passionate elegance of language and imagery. The Academy of American Poets exhibits McKinney's translation of "Apenas si recuerdo" ("I Hardly Remember") and it is one of my favorite of Guillen's poems as well: "It was a spoiled remnant of the South. A beach / without fishing boats, where the sun was for sale. / A stretch of shore, now a jungle of lights and languages / that grudgingly offered, defeated, its obligation of sand." ... A translator's introduction, a conversation between McKinney and Guillen, precedes the poems. At their first meeting in Granada in 1979, McKinney was convinced she had discovered a major poet. How very right she was. In 1994 Rafael Guillen was awarded Spain's National Prize for Literature. He continues to reside in Granada, the city of his birth.

This little book, which is small enough to take on the trail, is an invaluable field guide for scientists and amateurs alike, covering 19 oak species and 6 named hybrids found in the Southern California Floristic Province. It contains information on oak groups and hybridization, a key to the oaks of our region, as well as full, accurate descriptions on each oak species, including maps, drawings and distribution.

The most interesting thing about IN SEASON is the author's personal tales relative to each of the principal ingredients about which he writes. It is more than a cookbook, it is fascinating personal epoch which draws you in and keeps your interest, all the while giving good advice and recipes about Northwest products.

...than more Hrabal in English. This is about the seventh volume of Hrabal's work that has been translated into English. I don't read Czech, so I can't comment on the translation, but I've read all of them, and this continues the tradition admirably. This short novel connects with scenarios and employs characters from previous works, and it is said to be the first volume in a trilogy. Please give us more--in English. For those who haven't read Hrabal, all I can say is--A summary of the story line would be worthless. It's all in the writing, which is heart-meltingly beautiful.

This book is an excellent source for understanding North American Indian customs and life style prior to the appearance of European settlers. It is very well documented with good authenticity. The journals by Nicholas Perrot are vivid and interesting.

Ingeborg Hecht. Invisible Walls and To Remember is to Heal. Translated from the German by John Brownjohn and by John A. Broadwin. Evanston: Northwestern University Press, 1999.

Most people have heard about Hitler's Nuremberg Laws. But few are aware of their actual significance. Ingeborg Hecht's book Invisible Walls and To Remember is to Heal shows in detail the impact of the laws on the everyday life of her family, her Jewish father who got divorced before the laws were promulgated, her Aryan mother, and her brother and herself, the half-Jews. History comes alive in her book: The exact wording of a legal passage (given with its date) is followed by the descriptions of the results of these orders. But there are also glimpses of human compassion, the revolt against dehumanization. And at the end, she does not shy away from looking critically at the reparation efforts by the new German Federal Republic. The importance of Ingeborg Hecht's book is also shown in its second half which gathers responses to the first half which was published by itself a few years before this new edition.

I bought this book because I liked the title and the author's name sounded romantic but I have to admit, the content was at times a bit over my head. By the time I was done reading I hadn't figured out quite if feminist philosophy really was philosophy or not. I think I will have to read it again. However, I did think that it was quite an interesting assortment of essays and one I am proud to have on my shelf.

This publisher is doing a great service. There is no fluff here, just nuts and bolts facts on where to contact employers for this special hiring sector. I'm an employer (project manager), an employee, and a mentor to other professionals entering the field. I tell people to contact these companies, not to waste time looking in the papers or on job boards. The 'IT Staffing Firms' book (blue-green)lists staffing firms that hire -- these are firms that hire, and don't do work for the customer. The 'IT Services Firms' books by geographic region (gold) list IT services providers that hire, place and work with the client employer. I keep both these books close by. I've networked with companies and people from them. They have company names, telephone numbers, recruiter-placement contact names, emails and website addresses. I'm glad somebody has put together these books.

CAPITUALIZING THE ESSENCE OF THE CANADIAN WORKING CLASS CULT
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 1998-01-15
After completing the book, I have examined the contents closely, discovering that Thomas Dunk has captured the essence of the working class male. It is refreshing to read and study the social-class interactions and bonding that so stratify the working class male. It is the research for my Sociology 361 Class, and thereby intended that we examine closely the relationships and class structures. I consider the book an easy and enjoyable read, enlightning and educational, even for the novice to ethnographical studies.
