I still drag this out every year in March

One of the very few high points of my high school career was watching the 1978-79 Highlands Bluebirds varsity basketball team play in the state tournament at Rupp Arena in Lexington. A big part of what I enjoyed about it was getting out of school for two days, but I also discovered that I loved the way that Kentucky puts on a basketball tournament. It's impossible not to get caught up in the excitement from the time you enter Rupp Arena and when I saw this book on the shelf in the bookstore at NKU, it all came flooding back to me. At first I would just sit and read the book right in the store when I found myself with a break between classes, but eventually I broke down and bought a copy of my own. It's an excellent book on this comparitively narrow subject, but like I said, it's one I dig out every year around the time the district tournaments start. Mr. Embry, ever consider doing an update?

DICK SCHAAP of ABC/ESPN says "you have the perfect technique for books that combine coaching, counseling and entertaining." "This unique series (including Matt Gray: Frosh Phenom and Matt & Shawn: Baseball Battery) motivates kids to read an uplifting sports story, while subtly teaching them fundamentals of the game," says RICH FUNKE, Western New York television sports anchor. Ocorr weaves lessons of life and sports into wholesome fiction, focusing on high schoolers Matt and Shawn. ROLAND HEMOND, former General Manager of the Chicago White Sox and Baltimore Orioles and now Senior Executive Vice President of the Arizona Diamondbacks, writes, "Good ...value of education spelled out so well, surely makes exceptional reading." North Carolina school principal, WAYNE BYRD, states: "Coach Ocorr brings to reality fundamental skills..as well as valuable character traits which help develop productive citizens. I highly recommend the books to young readers as well as those who would like to coach young athletes."

There are 78 pages and the AR level is 5.9. The book is about Michael being the world's best basketball player and the Bulls winning six NBA championships and he won five regular-season MVP awards. When Michael's dad got murdered he retired from basketball and played his dad's favorite sport, which was baseball. He found out he wasn't good at baseball so he went back to playing basketball for the Bulls.
Michael was very happy seeing his parents at his games. I likeed him because he was a good basketball player and he cared about his parents, his wife, his kids and his team. The rest of the characters also liked Michael. The setting made me like the book because it was at basketball courts and I like going there to see games. The story was interesting and sade because his dad got killed and he retired from something he liked twice.

Michael Jordan

My book review is titled "Michael Jordan Star Guard," by Ron Knapp. Michael Jordan is a very special player, but he had to work to be in the NBA. When he was young he worked too much and skipped classes. Then his dad had a talk with him about getting good grades, so he stopped skipping classes. The reason Michael started playing sports is because he had a crush on a girl and he wanted to impress her. Michael Jordan's dream was to win a champion game in the NBA. But he didn't even make the high school team because he was too short. Finally, Michael won three NBA championship games. The most impressive thing about Michael Jordan was that he would not only make the most shots, but score winning shots. Michael would also play better with more pressure on him which made him more noticible.
This is a very well put together book. The book is organized from when Michael was born to the present day. This book has chapter organization, an index, and a table of contents. It even has a note page that covers each chapter. The pictures and the special facts make the book even better. The pictures let the reader see what things looked like back when the picture was taken. The facts tell the reader about things that took place in that time. This book was so good that I can't think of anything to change. I would recommend this book to any athlete that is willing to work hard.

Written by psychologist Jane Weierbach and professor of psychology and school counselor Elizabeth Phillips-Hershey, Mind Over Basketball is a self-help guide to dealing with stress and anxiety written especially for young people ages eight to twelve. Filled with coaching guides, skill exercises, self-quizzes and more, Mind Over Basketball teaches the reader how to coach himself or herself to handle stress and stay confident. Mind Over Basketball uses basketball as an example of an activity where one needs to control one's stress, but its advice is applicable to everything life can throw at a person, from tests at school to all types of team activities. Vignette stories help explain the points behind such positive behaviors as learning to keep one's cool, tune one's mind like a radio, talk positively to oneself, and more. Highly recommended as a gift book for young people and for children's library collections, "Mind Over Basketball" is also available in a hardcover edition.

Great insight into a widespread problem!
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-05-09
This book provides fantastic insight into a previously unaddressed, widespread problem...that of the continuing moving forward of the recruitment of college athletes. Just today an article was posted in the USA Today discussing this issue...but the article just talked about opinions, and was void of facts or proposed solutions. This book provides both...facts on the denegration of the timing of agreements and then number-based solutions on how the market can be improved. It's a must-read for anyone who is interested in college athletics or matching markets!!!
