I first read this book when I was eleven years old. I read it twice that year, and I'd sometimes read passages from it to pump myself up before a basketball game. Living in Australia, and without the Internet, I didn't know much about the NBA, but this book taught me a great deal.
I'm re-reading it now, and I'm surprised at how much I am enjoying it. Shaq has come a long way since then, and reading his comments on how he saw things when he first came in is interesting and illumining. The tone is relaxed and chatty, and there are plenty of funny and insightful anecdotes. This book is a gem, and at less than a dollar (second-hand), it's a must read for any basketball fan.

Outstanding history of women's basketball!

Review Date: 2006-04-28
This is a comprehensive and well written history of women's basketball at all levels from high school, industrial, AAU, college, pro. Great stories from its stars of yesterday and today, with many quotes and personal glimpses from players and coaches from every level and many major teams. The authors clearly understand the significance of Title IX and its significance to every female scholar-athlete and attempt to convey its continued importance with repeated references to it.

Highly recommended for any fan of the game, and a MUST READ for young girls and women who want to appreciate the pioneers of the game they play.

A "Must Read" for Anyone Interested in Women's Basketball

This is a carefully and well-written book that provides an excellent and thorough history of women's basketball. The book is a good blend of some of the unknown players/coaches/teams and the usual suspects. While the book focuses on basketball, the authors do a great job of placing the sport into the social/political dynamic of the times. They trace the continuing tension between women's expected roles and behaviors with the seemingly contradictory skills and attributes that athletic competence requires. They also don't flinch from discussing the presence of lesbians in and the impact of homophobia on the sport. I'm just an ordinary fan and enjoyed this book thoroughly. I highly recommend it to anyone who is interested in women's basketball.

Students today at LSU call the Pete Maravich Assembly Center the P-MAC. I can't stand to hear that. If they read this book, they might give the building the devotion it deserves. "Shooting the Pistol" is a clever name and the cover of this book and its design are also clever. I was expecting only pictures, but was amazed at the amount of copy that went along with the games corresponding to the photos. Pete is shown in all kinds of situations and the descriptions are amazing. This will make a great Father's Day gift.

I don't even know if this book is in prin anymore but, if it is, any sports fan should read it. It is similar to Friday Night Lights, The Last Shot, The Right Kind of Heroes and several books that have been written following one high school team through one year of their season. This chronicles one inner city high school team from Oakalnd and their quest to win the city championship. It follows everything surrounding the players-the one being recruited by every major college football program in the country, the lone whote player in the entire league, the up and coming superstar, the thug hoping to get his life straightened out...this book has it all. It is amazing that the author was given the access to these obviously skeptical players lives that he was and the way he details it is captivating beyond words.

Must read for parents of future high school kids.

This book is a must read for any youth coach of any sport and for any parent thinking of sending a kid to a inner city public high school. Filled with facts and statistics of graduation rates, medium grade point averages and anecdotal stories of tough young lives. If you're at all interested in why the Afican American young male has so many chips stacked against him from day one then read this book.

I'd recommend this book for those who are ranging from 3rd grade and above. My first time I read it, I wasn't really interested. But I tried it again and found it to be extremely humorous and an interesting story. Its about two kids, Soup and Rob who are in love with the game of basketball. They meet this plummer named Piffle Shootensinker, a basketball star from Pretzelstein, some where in Europe. He is unstoppable. Soup and Rob have an idea: have Piff play for city basketball team and play in the biggest game of the year. But Piff has a few drawbacks, he is homesick, misses his dog, and can only sink a basket when he listens to the music of his homeland. So Soup and Rob come up with a another facinating idea: make a SPITZENTOOTLE. What's that? You'll just have to read "Soup's Hoop" and find out what happens and read how clutzy these two kids are.

The storied championship of the 2007-2008 Jayhawk basketball team is detailed in this issue with lush photographs and thoughtful back-stories of not only the players but the program itself.

After reading this commemorative issue, you'll wonder why it took so long for this team to follow up their miracle championship from 1988. Furthermore, if you aren't a Jayhawk fan yet, this will surely sway you in favor of 'America's Team'... the birthplace of our nation's powerhouse programs (aside from Kansas of course) such as Kentucky and North Carolina.

A true college basketball fan shouldn't be without this collective piece of history.

Only one way: Straight & Narrow
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2000-03-22
Straight and Narrow is a fun book, that is also very honest and relevant for its intended audience. More than a few teen boys have been strongly encouraged to go to church when they would rather be playing basketball.

In this brief book is captured virtually all of the issues that face many of todays fourteen year old boys. Wanting to fit in; to be accepted and be like everyone else, the loss of a father and even a big brother to street violence, the threat of being lost yourself to the pull of the streets, the innocence of a basketball game which turns into neighborhood and gang rivalry; and instant violence, friends who will go with you even though they know that they shouldn't, the struggle of a young boy to find himself, and the introduction of a better life; a better way, if only you have the courage to choose it. Then there is a mother who uses a strong hand of guidance coupled with a lot of faith in God.

A great story, a compelling story, and a true one. Pam Rollins has hit the nail right on the head.

A Book for Such A Time As This!

In reading this story, I found it to be very similar to what goes on today with parents trying to raise children and the things we go through while trying to stay on a Straight and Narrow road. The story kept my attention in that it was such a reality and led you to believe that you were actually in the story, with home cooked meals, relationships, anger, disappointments and staying strong in times of trouble with a touch of Biblical guidance. I look forward to reading Pamela's next Book!
