compelling account of the boys from schenectady NY who won the LL title in 1954 and what they were doing in 1974. I lived in that area and even though 30 years have passed since he wrote the book it's amazingly accurate and well-written. You don't have to be a baseball fan to enjoy this book.

This book has tons of information on how to use the microscope, from beginners to more advanced users. I use this volume as microscopy is a hobby of mine, and also I use our microscope to teach my young children about the world of the small. In the pages of this book you can learn about plants, molds, yeast, bacteria, animal cells, microscopic pond life, how to prepare slides, preparation of cultures, insect life, and this list could go on, it makes science fun for the family. This book is very easy to understand, yet has very detailed information on a variety of subjects, with many drawings and photographs.

A "must have" for anyone involved in youth baseball.

This is an extremely useful book for anyone involved in youth baseball. Not only does it go through the basics of the game, it offers a huge amount of information concerning the role that each player/position has on the field.

As an added bonus, it includes the complete "Official Little League Rules" as well. The only drawback is that because it was printed in the early 90's, you will have to dig a little to find the revisions to make it current.

Whether you're a parent, a coach, an asistant coach or a league director, this book is well worth the price.

Play Ball!: The Story Of Little League Baseball is a comprehensive and profusely illustrated history of a quintessentially American approach to organized recreation for children. Beginning with its debut in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, in 1939 when Carl Stotz, once having agreed to a game of catch with his nephews who were to young to play organized baseball ended up a year later with having created company a business community sponsored, three-team league baseball team for kids. The first official Little League game was played at Park Point in Williamsport on June 6, 1939, launching an organized team sport phenomenon that continues down to the present day. Play Ball! discusses such historically relevant issues as racial and gender equity (devoting an entire chapter to the struggle for girls to participate in the organization) and Carl Stotz split with Little League that still divides the community of Williamsport where it all began. The informative text is enhanced with appendices that include the winners of all Little League Baseball and Softball World Series; a year-by-year history of Little League; countries in Little League; as well as lists and pictures of some of the famous people who played the game as children. Play Ball! is very highly recommended and informative reading for all Little League fans!

Time Machine to Those Wonderful Little League Years

If you've ever played baseball you'll connect immediately with this book. If you've never played...you'll wish you had.

Mr. Mathews writes about a set of young boys in the best years of their youths playing a game. But they could be any set of boys. You'll undoubtedly see yourself or your son or daughter in many of the characters.

In a way, it's not even about baseball. It's about the ability of children to make life mean more than cell phones and pagers. It's a translator for the secret language that children speak, but few adults do. You'll get an insight into the minds of the nine-year-old boys, and you'll find yourself reminiscing about those days when you were so little.

You'll surely smell the dirt and the dust that rise above the field when the slide came in just under the tag. You'll feel the wind rise out of the west and watch it push the hit into a triple, and you'll hope that Felix's dad can beat cancer.

Mr. Mathews takes the reader on a trip to a gas station as the boys attempt to trick the clerk into believing that Rand McNally is a city in southern Indiana.

He walks you through the rules of the 'Going Down Game,' in which batters have to answer questions about world geography, or become 'beamed' (as the boys say) by the incoming pitch to their cranium area.

Anyone who purchases this book will get more than their money's worth. They'll fall in love with these kids, and maybe, this game.

It's about baseball. It's about children. But most of all, it's about life.
