The Blind Collector

I've always bought comic books for the cover art. But with tens-of-thousands of comics out there, it was almost impossible to know which ones to search for. Of course, if I remembered a comic from when I was a kid that was a start, but what of the thousands I'd never seen? I was a blind collector. Gerber's books cover almost every comic book published till about 1965! 20,000+ photographs...fantastic! Even if I couldn't buy them all, I could at least see what was out there. The only weakness is that some later issues of the longer running titles are omitted. I would liked to have seen them all, but can understand the desire to wrap things up. For the price of one good 1950's era comic you can view just about ever cover published...a very good deal.

What a [great] set of volumes. I am a huge comic collector, owning every issue of Spider-Man ever printed, but I am also a great fan and collector of various other comics, and a comic-history buff. These books are a joy to just flip through, learning about Golden and Silver Age comics. The pictures are gorgeous, all in color on glossy paper. And there's 10's of thousands of them! Well worth the money and worth their weight in gold if you're a true comic fan and collector! Might be a bit much for just the casual comic enthusiast. These 2 books and the two volume Marvel set are the standard by which all other collecting resources should be held to!

What can you say about two books that have 21700 comic book covers beautifully printed on gloss paper? WOW! for a start. No one is going to better Ernst and Mary Gerber's five-year labor of love to complete this project. If you collect comics from 1935 thru 1965 you need these. I don't collect them but as a publication designer I have an interest in the visual aspects of popular culture so I got a set...despite the price!

Open either book anywhere and start looking and it soon becomes apparent that this is a very comprehensive collection, I kept coming across comics that ran for a few issues, sometimes only one issue. Each cover has up to twenty-five pieces of information, essential for collectors. Many show a cover of the only copy known to exist. The first sixteen pages of each book has text about collecting comics and their values. I liked the page in book two that is devoted to ads that appeared on the back covers, strangely some collectors only go for these, if you do, go for a copy of 'Hey Skinny!' by Mike Beller and Jerry Leibowitz, surely the only book about the subject.

Author Gerber says on the jacket flap...''if you spend one minute examining each picture, eight hours per day, five days a week, it would require an astounding NINE weeks to complete the job.'' Nine weeks later have a rest and then go and buy the two volume 'Photo-Journal Guide to Marvel Comics' and start to look at a further 7700 covers!

I was amazed at the scope of this book, every cover from 1935-1965, and the labor that must have gone into compiling and producing it. Its extremely well photographed, carefully indexed, and the quality of paper and binding is excellent. For serious comic book collectors, it's worth every penny. A lifetime book.

I am in a women's investment group and we used Ms. King's book as a textbook--it was VERY HELPFUL. I would recommend it highly. After working through the book, we invited her to speak to our investment group (she lives about 150 miles from us). She came and we learned even more through her lecture.
She will return and give us more information and even do a book signing.

I have read a good number of books on investing and Nancy King's book is one of the best. It is well laid out and easy to understand. It is for new individual investors as well as those of us who have been doing this for a little while. I found the information on how the New York Stock Exchange works very interesting. I never knew exactly what happens after I place a buy or sell order - the author explains the whole process. I am ordering a couple more of Nancy King's book to give as gifts to friends who are interested in investing.

A book which quickly became one of my all-time favorites is Stock Market Investing Made E-Z by Nancy B. King. I bought it last October just as I was, finally, determined to invest in the stock market. (I say "finally" because I graduated from high school 25 years ago.) The book presents all aspects of buying and selling stocks in easy-to-comprehend, bite-sized paragraphs. After reading it, I opened an account with an on-line brokerage and got started early this year..certainly a difficult time for the market, as we all know. But I applied what I had read and did my homework nightly by reading the business sections of a couple of newspapers and various financial websites, and the first-quarter's turbulence and my beginner's exhuberance notwithstanding, I am doing well in the market. And my 401-K is doing much better because I am managing it instead of merely contributing to it. Also, I have taught a couple of friends how to get into the stock market and manage their own retirement accounts. Certainly, this book has motivated me to invest more and consume less. Thanks, Nancy, your book has enriched my life.

This is a very comprehensive encyclopedia, covering much more than merely equine terminology. The book is filled with information on topics such as equine care and handling, ailments/symptoms and how to address them, equine nutrition, plants that are poisonous to horses, horse anatomy, aspects of showmanship, how to choose an instructor and much much more -- topics too extensive to mention all of them here. You can't go wrong with this book.

Horse lovers and owners should have the Horse-Lover's Encyclopedia as a home mainstay, while public libraries located anywhere near a rural area should have the Horse-Lover's Encyclopedia on their reference shelf. This is a comprehensive, A to Z encyclopedia of horses, from breeds and horse care to stable lore, and provides all kinds of details on everything from caring for hooves to performance and rodeo competition training. Small photos and diagrams throughout make for an excellent, basic handbook on the horse.

Young children can identify objects, feelings

A to Z Do You Ever Feel Like Me can be a great help to young elementary students (K-3). Teachers should be able to see many possibilities for instruction. Students can indentify objects and words by beginning letter in the borders. The photography allows the perfect opportunity to identify feelings and learn empathy. There is probably better literature out there, but this little book is well-written and can serve a variety of purposes to teach young children.

I really enjoyed sharing this book with my pre-schooler because it got us talking about feelings and the words associated with different feelings. My daughter really likes looking at all the pictures of the kids. And I'm sure it's a book that will grow with us as she is able to discuss more of the feelings in the book. I think teaching children about emotions starts with building vocabulary. Great book to get the conversations started.

My 3 year old got this book as a gift....it was the BEST book we have ever seen about feelings. It explores a much broader scope of feelings than every other book we have. The riddles are clever and keep my son's attention. He loves to guess which feeling the boy or girl is experiencing. The photographs are great tools in helping him guess the particular feeling. It is a MUST-HAVE for every child to learn how to discuss their feelings. After we read each riddle and guess the correct feeling, I ask my son for some more examples of times he experiences that particular feeling....again, it is a FABULOUS book about feelings. It is an active way for kids to learn how to express their feelings.

It is a delightful book for a wide age range of children, from very young children just learning the alphabet to elementary children just learning to read. There are fun riddles and puzzles for children at different levels to enjoy, and can be a wonderful accompaniment to parent/child conversations about feelings. The text is original, the photos are fabulous. Our family has thoroughly enjoyed this book, and everyone we've showed it to wants a copy!

This book is very easy to understand, the directions are written clearly and the photographs of the afghans themselves are absolutely beautiful. It has inspired me to make all of the afghans featured in the book. I also like this book because there are some very cool afghans to crochet and I would not be embarrased to show them off to any of my friends who are still in the 22-28 yrs old range. This is a lot of fun just to look at. I would also recommend any of the other Vanna White crocheting books as well. They are all put together very well.

A great book for a more advanced crocheter.

I do not recommend this book if you are just beginning to crochet. While the instructions are fairly clear, the patterns are a bit more difficult and appear to be geared to the intermediatte crocheter. Also, if you are like me and do not enjoy(or have time for)much assembly of your afghans, I would suggest trying another book as the majority of the patterns in this book require whip-stitching and such to complete the afghan.

If you are past the beginning stages of crocheting, this book has several beautiful and fun patterns for both practical and display use. I have made two of the afghans and while they took time, they were beautiful once completed. A good book to add to your collection once you feel you are ready for a challenge.

This is a great book!

What I didn't expect from this book was the quality of the afghans that I found. I truly thought this would be a fluff-type, I'm-so-popular-so-buy-my-book crochet book. I was greatly surprised and found it a delightful and interesting book filled with lots of crochet designs that will either stump you and make you want to throw the book across the room (guilty as charged) or it will make you go across the room, pick up the book and challenge yourself to make some really great afghans that your family will pat you on the back for and make them say great things about you! (I like that part!). This book is not a disappointment!

I really didn't expect to find many patterns I would want to make in this book, but there are a ton of great ideas! One thing I love is that there is such a variety. There are some for babies, some are great for kids, some are feminine, and there are a lot that are very neutral or even perfect for a man. There is also a nice variety in skill levels which is great, because that way you never get bored. The yarns are easy to find or to substitute. Most are either worsted wt or chunky and there are several sport wt. The ghans are photographed nicely too, so that you can get an idea of how different color schemes look with different decor styles.

If you like the art work of Gorey you will love 'Baby's First Mythos'. Perhaps not so much for children as for the adults who share their love of mythical history in reading to their children. The drawings are wonderful and the sense of humor amazing.

My girlfriend has this on her desk, and she handed it to me to read. (My age is over 50) I really chuckled when realizing so many connections to movies. Cthulhu is a very ancient creature - and it was rather funny to realize the 'Davey Jones' character in Pirates of the Caribbean was basically like Cthulhu.

Our eldest daughter is a comic creatrix and I gifted her with one of these books because she likes Gorey so much. I also bought a copy for myself and our now 1 year old granddaughter to share with her later.

IF you love gorey, lovecraft, mythology, and graphic novel type books, this will not only be enjoyed but will be come a collectable.

Very well done. The poems sometimes stretch a bit, but then, it's sometimes hard for find words to rhyme with Nyarlothetep or Cthulhu. The drawings, though, are wonderful. If your intention is to twist your child, much like Wednesday Addams, then this book is essential. Personally, though, I prefer to twist myself, and this book does that very well.

The idea of parodying the typical children's ABC and 123 books by illustrating them with Lovecraft's Elder Gods just tickles my funny bone. Every little snippet of writing, including the author and artist bios, is subtly clever, and the ink drawings are perfect for the subject.

The best part is...I thought I knew a bit about it, but the book actually taught me plenty I didn't know about the Lovecraft mythos. The only complaint (and a slight one at that) is the binding looks the kind that's going to crack and fall apart after not too long, which is a pity, because I'd like it to last long enough to show my own future spawn.

Every Lovecraft fan should get one.

In "The Bubble," Leo Sardarian and Edwin Mirzayans weave an incredible story of Allen's life as he graduates from college with a dream, but instead...decided to chase money.

They brilliantly show how the mortgage business that existed (just a few years ago) was competitive, fast and harsh for those who decided to play the game.

The story is a tragic one but the reader is left with hope for Allen's future because he realized that from within the "Mess" that his life became, there was an important "Message" to tell the world.

This book will make an awesome movie....Do it Leo and Edwin!

The best part about this story is that Allen found a way to give this situation a positive spin. It's a true story and it inspired me.I gave it to my son to read. With of all the commotion going on right now about the housing meltdown and reccession, this was a breath of fresh air.All of the other books are fact based and mostly pessimistic.Honestly, pessimism is the last thing we need now and I like the approach the author took.I think anybody who is currently experiencing some sort of back lash or effect from this housing crisis should pick this book up and read it.It'll put a smile on your face and probably stir up some emotions (my wife cried). The best part is the ending.Easy read and entertaining.

Just a quick note: Homocide books and baseball aren't my thing-- I've never even seen a baseball game-- but this book is compelling! Check it out!

The enjoyment of Lewin's first historical novel should not be reserved for adolescents. Within his two-continent, three-generational panorama, the intermingled tales of Jacky and her grandmother make compelling reading for adults. In plot and setting, the novel gives us Lewin the storyteller at his most expansive. To control such a large canvas, he limits the point of view to that of his naïve protagonists. For that reason, the cast of characters may lack depth, but the breadth is impressive. In a world of harsh cruelty and unexpected kindness, Jacky's success based on fortitude and personal integrity contrasts effectively with her grandmother's darker story. Cutting Loose reveals Lewin's versatility and scope. You don't need to be young to find it fascinating.

The action-packed thriller is a master-peice! It combines history, baseball, and murder into a melting pot of profound and insightful literature. It follows the life of a young woman, Jaqueline, or Jacky. She dresses up as a boy so that the other kids let her play baseball. But when her famous baseball playing father is murdered in cold blood by a fellow team mate she sts out to avente her faqthers death, and of course, play baseball. However, at ten is not about to let her wander around the country unattended. So she is shipped off to a farm in the midwest. There, she meets her best freind, Mattie. Tired of the opressive farm life the two escape to Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show. Happiness is short lived, however. Mattie is murdered by the knife act. Now Jacky must avenge two murders: Mattie's and her father's. From the Pruple Mountain's Majesty of the Rockey Mountains, to the sweeping Great Plains, to the gothic streets of New York, to the dark, dank sewers of London, where in the shadows, a killer waits. And at every possible place, baseball. This books is a roller-coaster ride of excitement! I loved it, and I guarentee that you will, too!

Great book!

This book is fast-paced and extremely interesting. It is well written and the characters are very well developed. Jackie, the main character is a professional baseball player who dresses as a man so she can play. She is on the search for her best and only friend's murderer, however a professional detective is sure that Jackie is the murderer and sets off in pursuit of her. There is another story woven into the story as well. I would reccomend this book to mature middle school students.
