Mr. Dunning gives his readers insight to real people living in the South through his story of a fictional Mack Oliver, a man who finds himself in a real-life situation where he is unable to help himself. This book is more than a crime novel, as it explores and explains how people are perceived and treated differently because of their standing in society. His portrayal of the legal system's inadequate treatment of the mentally ill is very accurate.

A Great Cultural Teaching Tool

Who's Mack OliverThis book is brilliantly written !!!
I believe "Who's Mack Oliver?" could and should be used as a teaching guide to help individuals take notice how they interact with different cultures in our society today. The way Mr. Dunning depicts the characters within this story is superb !!!

Individuals that read this novel will be pleasantly surprised the way you can follow each character; their role in the story; and, the interaction of each character to the completion of the story.

You may find yourself in one of the characters personality; how they reacted in their situation; and/or how your experiences identify with Mack Oliver.

I recommend this book to everyone with the greatest of pleasure !!!
The way Mr. Dunning designed the cover to the very last page is magnificent and will leave you hoping for a sequel !!! FANTASTIC !!!

This is a book that makes you think differently about the invisible people that we see in our everyday comings and goings. Mr. Dunning brings Birmingham to us with meticulate descriptions and his characters are poignant and real. The issues he tackles are well thought out and intriguing.

Great book, even if you are not an avid reader you will not want to put this book down. It made me feel like I was in Birmingham, AL on the southside of town at the Fountian hearing the music.
It also makes you stop and think about all the homeless people out there.
Could this really happen?

A great factual history novel

This novel is so real that it seams that you are walking on the Birmingham streets. Dunning plays with his knowledge of the English language using very rich vocabulary; some descriptions are Poet's work. He also has a profound knowledge of the Human behavior and a strong historical background with a clear understanding of what is really happening in this Country; all the silent but brutal racial and religious conflicts. Overall, this is an excellent masterpiece that deserves to be in any best-seller's collection.

Everything that you wanted to know about rigging ships with square sails.
The last part of the book is about ship handling. Now I know the reason the ships are rigged the way they are. You need this book if you build model square rigged ships.

I bought this book because I am a recreational sailor and ship modeler. I found this to be an excellent source of information on the rigging and basic operation of 19th century military and commercial sailing vessels, and it answered many questions I have had about older sailing vessels as compared to modern ones.

The subject matter is laid out logically, but must be read carefully due to its original 19th century syntax and language, and the tremendous amount of detail discussed.

The book starts with how strands are laid into ropes, how ropes are made into lines, the basic components of rigging (hooks, blocks, hearts, trucks, cleats), description and tying of basic seaman's knots, moving on to constrction and stepping of the masts, spars and sprits, standing rigging, running rigging, sail construction and rigging for each location on the ship, finishing with anchor rigging. As if that were not enough, the second half of the book is a fascinating treatise on practical seamanship of the day, including coming to anchor, when to use certain sails, reefing, laying to, heaving to and other heavy weather techniques.

The book is illustrated throughout with hundreds of highly detailed period line drawings. Truly an 19th century version of the Annapolis Book of Seamanship and Chapman's Piloting combined, it is an absolute must for any model builder or student of sailing ships who wants to know "how it was".

Simply Enjoyable

History and ships...
I Love History and ships, and this is simply one of the best and most enjoyable books I have read. I am still reading it, but it is one of those you want to share immediately. My hobby is building 18th century wood static model sailing vessels, and I have learned a few things already (despite my library of 40+ books on the subject). It hurls you back in time, to enjoy details that would have been forgotten, if not for this kind of book. Like the page that tells the strategy that one should use if the wind changed by three points... or taking in a topsail... or tacking expeditiously...
If you are a fan of history and the 1700's sailing... you cannot go wrong with this book (and its cheap!)

Exactly what it says it is.

Judge this book by its cover! It's exactly what it says it is. This book is full of practical knowledge suited for the young naval officer or merchant seaman. It's one of those books that is just fun to read. Similar to "The Art of Rigging," this book has tons of information about the rigging of sailing vessels not in common use today, but it's fascinating nonetheless. A great volume for those enthralled by the sea, or who enjoy model ship building. Looks great on the coffee table, too!

A veritable enchiridion of diction for those given to excessive cerebration or whom merely want to leg up to the cutting edge of lexical facility or merely assuage the traumas of lucubration. The book has a place of honor on my shelf - twixt a venerable and tattered Oxford Concise and the New Fowlers. Erudite, masterfully researched and articulated, and a real time-saver when it comes to looking-up in depth meanings of obscure and difficult words.

This is indeed a most excellent book, with plenty of gems to amuse and educate even the most erudite word maven. Were I to rate it on content alone, I would give it an unabashed 5-star rating - broad selection of words, with associated definitions and discussion being generally clear and informative.

However, one cannot judge a reference book like this solely in terms of its content. Organization matters - specifically, the ease with which one can expect to retrieve the information being sought. And this book leaves something to be desired in that regard. The author has a bizarre, and infuriating, predilection for separating words from their definitions, sending the reader on a cross-referencing frenzy around the book. Obviously, some cross-referencing is inevitable in any dictionary, but Schur seems to like to give his readers the run-around for no apparent reason.

For instance:

Why should someone looking up the word 'haiku' be redirected to the entry under 'cinquain'? If we proceed to that entry, we find definitions, not only for cinquain , but also for 'tanka', 'hokku', and - finally - 'haiku'. Why lump these four definitions together here, instead of locating each definition directly unter a discrete entry for the associated word? These are not synonyms.

Similarly, why is the definition for 'pawky' located as an aside included in the definition for 'pantagamy'? The two words have nothing to do with one another.

Look up 'lupine', 'caprine', 'leonine', 'asinine' -- in each case, you will be directed to the word 'accipitrine' before you get your definition. This is because all of the animal adjectives are included together in a single list, and 'accipitrine' happens to be the first element on the alphabetized list.

But enough griping. Let me finish on a positive note, by including 3 of my current favorite words -

strangury: A medical term, whose meaning can be inferred from the following citation - "He that hath that dysease .... that hyghte stranguria, pysseth ofte ande lytyll."

pilliwinks: an instrument of torture designed to crush the fingers. (The discussion notes that thumbscrews were often referred to as "thumbikins", or "thumbkins", which seems akin to trying to convince someone that waterboarding is just the latest extreme sports craze.)

thank-you-ma'am: a hollow or rut across a road that causes the people in a vehicle passing over it to nod involuntarily, the way one might do in acknowledging a favor and expressing thanks.

Content: 5 stars. Organization: 4 stars.
Overall rating: 4.5 stars, rounded up to 5.

My wife gave this book to me last Christmas. It is the best gift she has ever given me--a sesquipedalian feast that, having become quite quotidian (to this reader), has yet to be rendered trivial, or desipiient. It offers a brobdingnagian view of a lexoconic world that even those of lilliputian linguistic skill can appreciate. Very simply, if you love language, if you love learning, you'll love this book.

I was walking through Barnes & Noble with my friend when we both spotted this book, it looked like so much fun. It truly is great fun to read. The book is split up into two sections, the first section is the 1000 most challenging words, the second part is 1000 most obscure words. Let me tell you, I can't even say a quarter of the words in this book but it is very interesting to read through it and find words like zarf(a special type of cupholder) and sic(which means thus or therefore). I used some of the words in this book each day(or at least try) and it has really broadened my vocabulary.
This book is the perfect gift for a friend or if you just want to have some fun with impossibly obscure words!

This is nearly indispensable for the serious music student. Used in most first-year theory courses, the Bach Chorales illustrate what the master did and why our Western music theory is based on the chorales he wrote.

First bought 18 years ago, I found that I'd somehow lost my copy along the way. I bought another copy since I'm taking further music theory courses and though it isn't required in this particular course, it helps immensely to have a copy on hand.

The stories within are NOT just long lists of names and mysterious prophecies--they present history in a manner that keeps me turning pages. Highly recommended as a study aide or reading as literature.

How much do you know about the Bible? Is your knowledge of this all-time bestselling guide to the Christian faith limited to random verses pulled out of a hazy memory in times of need? Here's an invaluable reference book by prolific author W. Terry Whalin, whose experience includes service as a former Wycliffe Bible translator and associate editor at Decision, the publication of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association. Whether you're a brand-new Christian or a seasoned believer who's interested in brushing up on Sunday school lessons you learned decades ago, Alpha Teach Yourself the Bible in 24 Hours provides effective steps that will guide you toward a fresh familiarity with the Bible.

The success of this book lies in its unique approach to learning, one hour at a time. Whalin begins with a thorough introduction of the authors and organization of the various books; how Bible translations differ, and which study tools are most helpful. Discover the beauty of Creation, the birth of the nation of Israel, and more, as the author leads you through four distinct divisions:
"The Kings and the Prophets"
"The Old Testament Wisdom Books"
"Meet Jesus Christ"
"The Church is Born and Letters from the Apostle Paul"

Any good study involves a time of personal thought and application. Alpha Teach Yourself The Bible in 24 Hours delivers both! At the close of each hour, W. Terry Whalin has included an "Hour's Up!" section, with ten questions to deepen the focus of that lesson. According to the author, "The Bible is more than a series of good stories or practical advice; it's a book that provides people with personal applications for everyday life." He realizes how busy our lives have become, and has purposefully planned this guidebook to work around manageable blocks of time. Whalin believes Bible study can be "easy and fun," and has added fascinating sidebars to enrich the takeaway value: Cultural Fact, Historical Fact, and Just a Minute (tips, biblical insight, and advice).

Readers are immersed into the lives of people like David, "a man after God's own heart;" Moses, "prince, shepherd, and leader;" and Queen Esther of Persia. Discover why the Psalms were written for singing, and what the word blessed means in Greek. Explore what it means to become a follower of Jesus, and why Jesus often taught in parables. Learn how the early Church began, and what it meant in the lives of those very first Christians.

Alpha Teach Yourself The Bible in 24 Hours proves that Bible study does not have to be laborious or dry. It eliminates any preconceived notions by presenting "faithful and flawed men and women who followed God" in a manner that's unstilted and easy to grasp. Readers come away with a realization that God has a plan and a purpose for his world, and a deep personal love for each of us.

Think you're too busy to dig deeper? W. Terry Whalin will change your mind.

Just reading the first few pages of the preface will set your mind upon thoughts never imagined. This is a book that will really change you, and, I must say, his author did an amazing job at it. It even includes antique alphabets and an explanation to the origin of ours. If you can get your hands on a copy of this book, which by the way is somewhat rare, do buy it without further hesitation.

This is the true questionning of the origin of our religions, our language, and nations. Though, this isn't a book just for anyone, if you've gotten as far as reading this review you ought to buy it.

This has the magnificence in knowledge that Shakespeare has in theatre. I have a hardcover copy, 1 of 1,000 published, I treasure.
Yes, the vocabulary is of the literati of 1800 - what else would it be? If you can accept it as friendly conversation of one who is comfortable with words, you will enjoy it!
It should be required reading for all who aspire to a broad knowledge of how the world came to be as it is today. Include some Campbell and Maszlow and your perspective will exceed your strongest desire. Familiarity with history is beneficial; familiarity with Higgins is vital for knowing where our ideas and ideals come from.
Yes, it can well be considered "deep", which gives it value. I am so impressed with Higgins' effort, I would invite anyone who has read it, or thinks they can read it, to communicate with me ... . Or perhaps not, that may mean I'd be compelled to read it a third time. Well, go ahead, I'll do it anyway. (No, my copy is not for sale. I'll give it up only when they pry it from my cold stiff fingers.)

As we enter the twenty-first century and the oncoming third milleniuim since the birth of Christ, the world may finally be ready for this book. It was undoubtedly not when it was written, and though it may have saved a few million lives had it been publicly wrassled with before the advent of Nazism, the world was probably not ready for it until now. Of the books that I have proclaimed being of the most important written this century (Edward Said's ORIENTALISM, Bernal's BLACK ATHENA, Bradshaw's HOMECOMING, Campbell's HERO OF A THOUSAND FACES, deSantillana and von Dechend's HAMLET'S MILL among them), this book, written a century BEFORE (c. 1830's), towers above them all.

This book, which I have yet to finish, is NOT for the faint of heart, by any stretch of the imagination. Despite the fact that it will probably have the paradoxical effect of reinvigorating your faith in whatever one you have chosen- after a time- beyond anything else could. The style has its obvious flaws, and does contribute to its ability to overwhelm. But trust me, it won't stop you.

Of all the books I have recommended to friends and family and strangers, I have to say with this staggering epic:

Read it at your own risk. Read it and be changed.

The content is fabulous! The writing style is rather dense, typical of its original publishing date of 1832, but Higgins makes sense of the foundations of a lot of esoteric information that had previously seemed quite random and rather indecipherable.
My one criticism lies in the print quality. This is an exact copy of the nineteenth century original and it was apparently either a larger book or originally set in about 6 point type. Plan on investing in a good magnifying glass or risk serious damage to your eyesight.

Can there be a link between a modern day corporate
vice president and a member of the ancient Elemental
Council? Lucky for us Caryn Colgan's initial effort in her four
volume series can answer that question. While leading us
on a ride that transitions from the lower Paleolithic epoch
to the high stress business world of today's St. Louis.

With an ever-growing cast of characters, nicely fleshed out,
each with their own bit of synchronicity, Colgan places us
squarely in the center of the action in the boardroom
and in fields and forests of the ancients.

As her main character strives to understand her complicated
dreams, she's forced to take a hard look at how she's been
handling her life this time around. When a new set of friends
intervene and enlighten her, the idea of coming to grips with
one's karmic destiny takes her to a new level.

With a tidy summation in the final chapters of the Element of Air,
if we've been paying attention, we now know that an ancient
society seemed to have it all figured out when opposing forces
dropped in and upset the cosmic balance. Our heroine meanwhile
has come to realize that by setting her ego aside and extending
compassion even to her enemies, she has taken the first steps
towards reuniting the Council and regaining that connection
between humankind that was lost so long ago.

Magnificent and thought provoking!

Review Date: 2006-10-27
In this fictional account author Caryn Colgan has shared experiences from her own life. It is so well done that it is difficult to separate biography and fiction as they intersect. Caryn has masterfully blended her story into the personality and life circumstances of the fictional heroine Karan Coleman.

In the story Karan has troubling dreams that take her back to ancient tribes and early cave dwellings. As Karan tries to analyze her dreams she notes, "...dreams help the mind wrestle with difficult issues, solve problems, and even jolt the dreamer to examine issues ignored in consciousness."

Informational and often profound, the reader is given much for later contemplation and deeper consideration. After a series of seeming coincidences Karan is told on two separate occasions, "Coincidences are where life and destiny intersect." In her search for purpose Karan is reminded, "Every life has a purpose, though few actually embrace its full potential."

Giving the reader another thought to ponder, Caryn writes, "All of this defies the logic you crave. But then, spiritual matters are not really rational nor are they subject to empirical evaluation, at least not with our present technology."

Conversational dialog is the medium Caryn chooses to use in introducing life principles and metaphysical thought into the story line. She writes intuitively with a mission as though driven to awaken the reader's responses to a complex theme of an ancient pact in the contemporary life issues Karan if facing in a competitive career field. From the introduction right through to the epilogue I was gripped by the narrative. Caryn Colgan is a superb communicator and a natural story teller.

Although metaphysical and New Age in emphasis this is a compelling story that can be appreciated and enjoyed by all readers seeking spiritual answers for life's probing questions.

This book is a great expose of what grassroots political people go through at every election cycle. My family has worked at this level and says Wilcox is right on the mark. The most laughable character in the book is Rocco Sarducci, a Democrat faithful with the cunning of a fox. Although the book is a fictional story, friends from the Pasadena area tell me Sarducci bears a strong resemblance to California Assemblyman Anthony Portantino. While the book is a little wrody at times, the plot is great and the descriptions of characters and locations are excellent.

Although this book is a work of fiction, it has some parallels to the unsuccessful campaign of Susan Carpenter McMillan for the California State Assembly in 2000. The character Dee Dee Smith, for example, sounds a lot like Paula Jones. But, the details and events in the book are decidedly different from what happened to Carpenter McMillan.

The author paints an interesting picture of the fictional Assembly candidate. She's a bold woman with no fear of going toe to toe with her opponents. At the same time, she has a terrific sense of humor and can be very likeable.

But, as the story unfolds, the candidate's darker nature begins to show through. What else should we expect of a politician, after all? I am left feeling that the author's fictional candidate would make a good Assemblywoman, but not a very good friend.

The author does an excellent job of character development for this very complex woman. You may hate her or love her, but you can't resist respecting her toughness.

An eye opening journey into the devious side of politics.

Until I read this book I had no idea of how vicious Democrats can be. I asked a few friends who have worked for our local Congressman and State Senator. They told me that what I learned from reading "...And the Donkey They Rode in On" is more than accurate. The book is a political eye opener for those of us who are less savy to the deceptive game of politics.

According to the author Wilcox, there is a war going on right here within our shores. It's a war for our society, and everything we believe. The Democrats know it but the Republicans don't. If Republicans don't wake up soon they will lose everything...and so will we. My friends and I agree that Mr. Wilcox is right on about this.

In this story, a devious president who is seeking revenge for being impeached tries to direct who will win in San Diego Congressional and Assembly contests. This is a lot like what happened in my hometown where President Clinton wanted to defeat Congressman Jim Rogan and Assembly candidate Susan Carpenter-McMillan.

The story takes a bunch of quick and unpredictable turns in the final days of the campaign and nothing is as it appears. Then, the roof caves in on the Democrats and the election turns out to be a lot closer than expected. Too bad this didn't happen for Ms. Carpenter McMillan...I thought that she was a better candidate than the Democrat she lost to. It appears that in today's times, money buys more than justice. Sadly, it also seems to buy revenge, campaigns, elections and our towns.

I enjoyed this book and highly recommend it to people who have no idea what goes on leading up to election day.

As a person who has spent many years working on political campaigns, I give David Wilcox high marks for doing a great job of describing what goes on when Republicans and Democrats slug it out.

It's a sad but true commentary on how low the Democrats often stoop to gain a little advantage over a good Republican candidate. I have seen first hand the kind of thing that goes on in real political campaigns, and Wilcox describes everything to a tee in this work of fiction.

Wilcox develops his characters beautifully with one exception. There is an especially dark character named Eve McAdder who receives very little in the way of development. This is similar to the technique used by Ayn Rand who deliberately tells very little about her evil characters to project them as people unworthy of notice aside from their actions.

Wilcox is very economical with his words in creating the atmosphere in several scenes. He succeeded in putting me right in the middle of the action without being wordy.

If you don't understand just how fierce the battle between warlike Democrats and their often unprepared Republican opponents is, you should read this book. It might change the way you vote!

This book is a hoot. Wilcox's character Rocco Sarducci is the Inspector Clouseau of politics. He is the ultimate sleazy politician who plays dirty tricks---some of which backfire on him---and smiles at you while he's doing it.

Still, I had a lot of trouble hating him personally. His actions are repulsive, yet he has a fuzzy, likeable side. Wilcox did a terrific job of showing us just how these seemingly warm Democrat politicians wage war on Republicans and on America's culture.

This book is very timely with the November elections just around the corner.

Angkor, Celestial temples of the Khmer Empire is a photobook limited to the Angkor Site and some outlining temples. Although the quality of the photo's is excellent, the book itself with regards to the informative value is disappointing. An exception to this is the chronology of sites. I purchased three books on Angkor Wat after my week visit to Siem Reap, Cambodia and this book was by far the best I have seen. The photos are excellent and the narration in very informative. It is expensive but worth it.

Wow, what a spectacular book, truly amazing. I was blown away by the quality of the photography, the reader actually feels like they are in the jungle amid the ruins of Angkor. I have never visited Angkor Wat and probably never will, but after experiencing this book, I feel somehow that I have been there. The quality of the book is superior and the book even comes in a wonderful case. The publisher should be congradulated, it's a luxurious book. Some books are extremely expensive and you wonder why, I can assure you, you will not ask that about this one. If you have any interest in this subject or just like to own beautiful things I urge you to purchase this book, it will be a jewel in your book collection

Through his magical photographic eye, Jon Ortner has created a wondrous collection of striking images and scholarly prose. His perfectly lit photographs and well-documented historic descriptions allow one to easily understand this complicated ancient subject. Each temple is clearly organized into relevant sections from the central Angkor area to the rare and never-before-seen temples in the outer lying areas. If you have visited Angkor - Ortner's book is the perfect addition to your library. Or, if you have not visited, this book provides the perfect impetus.

Over 20,000 people a year go to Antarctica and only 5400 people went to South Georgia last year. I am going in November and feel this is probably the one book for people to read if they are going there. Everyone I have talked to that has gone to the Antarctic Circle says that South Georgia is a must. Read this book before you book your cruise and if it is in your budget add South Georgia. It is one of the great ecosystems of the world so if you have done Africa and the Galapagos or other A list eco-tours this book will probably convince you to add South Georgia.

It is a wonderful collection of pictures taken by Tim and Pauline Carr, during their long stay in the South Georgia Island. Such remote and unreachable place for normal people as I am, but to dream with.... a land where the human touch almost changed the landscape, but where the nature took over, after the last whalers left the island, with the rebirth of a new natural chain.

Having been to South Georgia and met the Carr's three years ago, I was very excited to see their marvelous habitat so poignantly displayed. It is a world of the crossroads of many ecologic niches, man's tenuous and not always synergistic intersection with it, and and an adventuresome couple's love for the land, sea, and animals. A bit more could have been said about Shackleton and his place in its history, but over-all highly recommended. It only enforced my desire to return.

Smitten by South Georgia after 20+ years of sailing the world in a 28' cutter, the Carrs have generously chosen to share the object of their affection through breathtaking photographs and charming text. The reader accompanies them as they explore the coastal bays, ski across glaciers, and wonder at being preened by an albatross. Holding this book in your hands is a reminder of the truth of the definition of work as "love made visible."

Fitting tribute to the sometimes threatened wildlife on this island - South Georgia. Apart from the stunning bird photographs with those amazing snow-capped peaks, there is the effusive commentary, emphasizing the natural moods of the place, with journeys by boat, hiking, on skis, explorations made more meaningful with some of the scientists from their bases. In fact the Carr's are the only permanent residents here, so taken with the wildness of the place, and actually run the Whaling museum. Not the least of characters is the famed one hundred year old Falmouth (England, UK) built cutter with whom we can share it's history in the final chapter of the book. This is no ordinary boat, not for all that the Carr's have taken her through these last 25 years. First hearing of the Carr's exploits in John Ridgeway's 'Then we sailed away', somehow the dangers of their journeys, although not exactly glossed over, are not depicted as felt experience as in the Ridgeway work, feeling more like the safe narrative encountered in a childrens' version of a day at sea. The reader is not aware of the friction and general mayhem that is so well recounted by John. Also there is no sense of the 'burden of the possession of mind', lonely outposts bringing on philosophical musings than is done here, unless of course they were were always an idyllically matched and happy couple. It is not that sort of book, rather allowing the displacement of humanity as much as possible in order to bring out into greatest relief, the exorbitant wildlife.
