Great History of Baseball in the Heartland

Dr. Roger Launius, who is the chief historian of NASA, has moved from space into examining the history of professional baseball in the state of Missouri. A great read. Launius tells all the stories concerning the St. Louis Cardinals, St. Louis Browns, KC Royals, Monarchs, and KC A's and others. He blends compelling stories and anecdotes about each team's history(both Major League and Negro league) and their places in the overall history of baseball. Maybe the best concise history of baseball in a state ever written. A must for every baseball fan. I especially enjoyed the section on the Kansas City Athletics and their owner Charlie O. Finley. Buy this book.

These Junior League books are great! I love them. I have the other Seattle Junior League book and I use that one all the time. (Yum - chicken cous cous salad!) This book is packed full of favorites - easy stuff you can make on the weeknights. The menu planning feature in the beginning of the book is also very helpful because sometimes it is hard to put together a whole meal that works...they do it for you! They offer good, reliable recipes.

I purchased this book while in Seattle. It is becoming dog earred and well loved. Have yet to find a recipe that is not wonderful. To bad it is no longer available. Tried to buy it for a relative. It is a tremendous cookbook.

This is my first review to write, although I've read many others. I felt compelled to do this as I saw no review had been written about this book and it really deserves one! It's beautiful to begin with and has many great, colorful illustrations. The recipes are interesting and different without being too tedious or difficult. There are even sections with information about herbs & spices, wine and food pairings, substitutions and large food quantities. I love it!

Great Pictures, Great Story, Great Color

1995 was the 'recovery' World Series. The 1994 series was cancelled. Yes, the event that had survived two World Wars, the Federal League intrusion of 1914, and the death of the reserve clause could not survive an internal war between millionaires and billionaires. The only loser was the fans.

Enter the Atlanta Braves. The team of the first half of the 1990s, the Braves entered the series yet to win it all despite three previous division titles.

Enter the Clevland Indians. Forty years - an entire generation - since their last World Series appearance. Forty-seven years since their last triumph in 1948. And who did they beat for that title? The Braves!!

Greg Maddux. Kenny Lofton. Albert Belle. Tom Glavine. Chipper Jones. Carlos Baerga. Jim Thome. Ken Hill. Steve Avery. David Jstice.

They're all here in living color. A great book for your coffee table.

A Perfect Collection

I purchased this book to support the work done by the Assistance League of the Bay Area, but I soon realized it was a culinary treasure. Not one of the contributors would have shared any recipe that might diminish their current local reputations, so the result is a collection of perfectly delicious dishes.
Each time I have needed something special for a party, such as our recent family Christmas brunch, I have found several recipes in this collection. The directions are clearly written and the end product is fantastic! It is now my favorite cookbook for "foods to impress" with the bounty of our Galveston Bay area taste!

Something great from the Bay Area of Texas

If you have guests coming and you want to really knock their socks off with a well-planned and sophisticated brunch, luncheon or a many-course dinner, you can't go wrong with Settings, Sunrise to Sunset. This is the second cookbook published by the Assistance League of the Bay Area and it is a good one. The recipes are presented in a pleasant and professional format and the book lays flat for those times you need both hands doing something besides holding the recipe open at a critical juncture. The recipes all read like something from a menu in the finest restaurant concocted by a famous chef. The Index is extremely detailed and if you can't find an item, it isn't in the book. The extra tips and hospitality hints are practical and their location on the edges of the pages make them easy to notice and read.

Discontents from country to country and even back home
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2005-04-11
Tregaskis was born in Elizabeth, New Jersey.

After I graduated from college in May, 1971, Oberlin College,
A.B., then spent some time at Vanderbilt. In 1972 I hung out
as a hippie on Mt. Adams in Cincinnati, then my father
got me another job working for my uncle at MacPerth Knitwear
downtown Cincinnati... then another job in Elizabeth
working for Wilson Freight Company loading and unloading
trucks. I was in Elizabeth the Fall of 1972. I drove
a tow motor, what they called fork lifts.. Cardboard
drums of yellow cake came through there and telephone exchange
mainframes.. One of the truck berths was to Montauk.

I came home to Cincinnati in December of 72 then worked
as a dishwasher for 10 days before Christmas at Frisch's.

Then started back at University of Cincinnati in math
and biology. I had a breakdown and went to Enoch Sheppard
Pratt Hospital in Baltimore for 8 months, while in the hospital
earning a real estate license. I left the hospital to
sell real estate, working for Professional Real Estate
and Coldwell Banker Grempler... while working for Grempler
I was also working in a bacteriophage genetics lab at
Johns Hopkins.. I left Baltimore in the spring of '75 to
take the Big Trip, seeing the country. I ended up in
San Francisco and was hospitalized twice. The second
time, I was there at Napa for 3 months... A young man
on the ward's locker was filled with books. I bought two
of them for 10 dollars. One was an entire book on
Ohm's law, or electronics.. The other, Seven Leagues.

My father picked me up and we flew back to Cincinnati.
After a month home I took the Navy officer's test, a math
test, getting 58/60 where 60 was passing.

Next year I took a year of electronics at Ohio College
of Applied Science - Ohio Mechanic's Institute.

Seven Leagues is the frustration Tregaskis feels, discontents
where ever he lived even finally home.
