River Road Recipes -- Remembering My Roots
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 2000-04-05
Growing up in Louisiana, the culture and cuisine was all around me. Restaurants all over the area created the mouth-watering cajun and creole dishes which everyone associates with Louisiana. A crawfish boil was a common weekend activity when the shellfish were in season, and the rest of the week was spent using the leftovers to create other incredible dinners.

My mother swore by the River Road Recipes series of cookbooks. I had countless meals of delicious Louisiana foods, from etoufee to jambalaya. Now, in my own kitchen a thousand miles away, I cook from this cookbook. The recipes are easy to prepare and delicious to eat. The only problem I have encountered is difficulty finding specific ingredients. But these are easy to replace, and the recipe does not suffer much.

If you want to spice up your cooking and recreate some of the south's greatest cuisine in your kitchen, this cookbook will get you well on your way.

Let the good times roll!

For Ottawa area Senator fans who read "The Ottawa Citizen", the author, Roy McGregor is known for his well written and intersting articles. Roy continues to follow the team today. This book is a historical behind-the-scenes look at the Senators. From Ottawa winning the franchise in 1990, the entry and expansion drafts of 1992 to the dreadful 1992-1993 season. Gives the reader insight on the lives of professional hockey players on & off the ice. Senator fans and hockey fans in general will love the book!!! Remember folks, the is the same man who co-authored the book "The Game" with Ken Dryden which is considered a 'must read' for all hockey fans.

Different recipes; the place I go for something a little out of the ordinary. A number of the recipes such as Fresh Broccoli Salad w/ Custard Dressing and Tipsy Tenderloins have become old favorites. The only disappointment was an applesauce cake that obviously had the wrong measurements. If I could only have 6 cookbooks, this would be one of them!!

The JDL were certainly a destructive group, but this book is fun to read because they were RIDICULOUS.
First off, they're all dentists and jewelry salesmen who pretend to be in special forces. They pick fights with mafiosos, louts, and even an off-duty soldier and get a real "zetz". Then they make homemade explosives and wind ip with no blast, just toxic gases. They fumble everything, make asses of themselves, nearly set themselves on fire and screw up the simplest things. This wasn't a job for a rookie cop. The JDL should have been investigated by the Fire Department.
Thankfully, Rosenthal doesn't get blown up or burned in any accidents (the JDL try to make napalm from petrol and soap) but he winds up protecting these shlemiels from "real" tough guys.
I saw some of these guys at the 2004 Israel Parade in NYC. They had these greasy-haired Jewish teens, in black suits and sunglasses (I'm not joking) collecting donations. It's a free country, and everyone has their way of doing things. But I wouldn't want a JDL by my side if there comes a fight.

rugby for dummies more for the world scene
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-05-10
About two-thirds of this book is the same as Rugby for Dummies, which is subtitled "The official guide to Rugby in North America". The two books share an author (Greg Crowden), and many of the photographs, diagrams, drawings, and narrative is the same. Which is fine--Rugby for Dummies is an excellent introduction to a complex game. Rugby Union for Dummies omits the sections on the greatest North American players, the college scene, etc, and concentrates more on the professional side. You'll see pages on the All-Blacks Haka, for example, in Rugby Union for Dummies that are not in the North American version.

There's a dizzying array of overlapping professional rugby leagues in the world, made even more complex by the idea that a player--let's call him Smith--might play professionally for England in the Six Nations tournament, might play in a league, might play for the British Lions touring team, and the Barbarians, and more, all in the same year. It's not quite as confusing as if Smith played for the Dallas Cowboys Sunday afternoon, for the Bills in the Monday night game, then again with Dallas the next Sunday--but it does take getting used to.

There are differences in the game. You won't find the "Sin-Bin" in Rugby for Dummies, but you will in Rugby Union for Dummies--this is like a penalty box in hockey. Ditto the "Blood Bin". If you're new to the game, and may be playing rugby, there are things to watch out for. Rugby is NOT American football (which derived from rugby). Padding, etc, is minimal, and if you try to use football equipment, almost certainly illegal. The books say that in tackling "keep your head aimed to the side of your opponent's body"--use your brain, not your head! The son of a friend of mine got permanently paralyzed at age about 20 in his first and only game of rugby. Also, as noted--some of the rules (such as offsides, can be very confusing--even for veteran players. These books will help. An interesting sport, and some well-written books to help you understand it.

An excellent book that challenges what used to be conventional wisdom about the health of baseball. Cull shows that pitching is the key to winning and that the amateur draft helps even the smallest teams obtain it. As a result, competitive balance in baseball hasn't suffered, even as salaries have increased. A great book to put on any fan's shelf.

An excellent and well-written book. Van Hyning does a great service to the only baseball dynasty the Caribbean has ever known. The book, not only brings to light obscure anecdotes, but it also provides the reader with a wealth of baseball stats on the team througout its history. Few folks know that many of major league's most famous players got their start with the Santurce Crabbers. I've been fortunate to have grown up with the Crabbers and seen some of the history relived in the book. This book is especially important in 2004, the year the Santurce franchise was sold to another city in Puerto Rico.
