Perhaps the rarest modern comic in existence
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2007-09-27
Issue #5 of Volume one contained an authentic vintage advertisement for a Marvel-brand douche. Marvel Comics is DC's chief rival within the comics industry and Moore had had a public dispute with Marvel, his former employer. This ad caused DC executive Paul Levitz to order the entire print run destroyed and reprinted with the offending advertisement edited. Some copies of the pulped print run escaped destruction and are the rarest modern comic books in existence. It is estimated that fewer than 100 copies of this book exist, and none were actually circulated.

Too funny, and too cool!

In a later title, Moore creates a "Miracle Douche Recall" headline on a newspaper, which is not only a reference to the furor, but is also a reference to the Marvelman, when Marvel Comics had previously forced Marvelman, which was written by Alan Moore, to change its name to Miracleman, despite Marvelman having been around for 40 years.

As they themselves admit, a lot of their sketches don't read funny, but this is a great insight into how their shows are put together.

Lots of of production photos, ephemera and most interestingly hand written pages with original scene ideas scattered throughout. A must for a fan of the show.

I read this book for my Classic Ethnographies seminar at school. It is by far one of the most interesting ethnographies I have had the pleasure of reading. It combines ethnography with history and gives the reader a good overall view of the Iroquois. I can't recommend this book enough. If you only read one book on the Iroquois, this should be that book!

Nice monograph on an obscure era of baseball history
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2000-05-17
In this volume David Voigt, author of the standard three-volume history AMERICAN BASEBALL, turns his attention to the period from 1892 to 1900, when the National League stood alone.

The era opened with the NL absorbing four clubs from the now-defunct American Association to create a single, 12-team league. With no competition from other major leagues or other major team sports, the NL nonetheless ran itself almost into the ground within eight years.

Voigt nicely describes the action both on and off the field. More than half of the book deals with the era's leading players and pennant races; the rest focuses on managers, fans, owners, umpires, sportswriters and the rest of the baseball world. The tale culminates with the rise of the well-managed American League from an obscure minor league to the equal, if not superior, of the NL. Recommended!

Fields of Racism: Excellent Book for Children
Helpful Votes: 9 out of 9 total.
Review Date: 2000-11-10
This fascinating account of pre integration baseball is a treasure. Not only does it introduce young readers (and parents not familiar with the "Negro Leagues") to great, almost legendary African-American players including Leroy "Satchel" Paige, Josh White, James "Cool Papa" Bell, Josh Gibson, and Jackie Robinson (as well as the Cuban-born Martin Dihigo, Jose Mendez, and Crisobal Torriente), but it explains segregation with facts and an appropriate tone of compassion and a sense of injustice:

"Before about 1950, if you were black and wanted to earn a living playing baseball, you were not allowed to play on the same team with white ballplayers. Prejudiced team owners, encouraged by bigoted players, established racist rules that prevented black athletes from playing in the major leagues, regardless of their skills."

The book also explains how Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier when Branch Rickey hired him to play for the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947. The book mentions the insults that Robinson endured (though not detailing them) as he paved the way for other early major league stars who came from the Negro Leagues (for example, Roy Campanella, Monte Irvin, Ernie Banks, and Elston Howard).

This initial integration spelled the eventual end of the Negro Leagues. Still, in one poignant quotation from Gene Benson, an outfielder with the Bacharach Giants and the Philadelphia Stars, famed baseball author Lawrence Ritter captures the accomplishments of these often unheralded players: "We never thought about the major leagues. We never dreamed that it would come true. But I know we were the pioneers. Without our league, where would Robinson have come from? If we weren't out there suffering and struggling, they wouldn't have any blacks in there now."

Although written primarily for kids, I would have liked to see photos (in addition to the excellent drawings) of the players, and, when known, their stats. For a more detailed look at the game, try Robert Peterson's great "Only the Ball Was White." This, however, is an excellent (if somewhat too brief) look at an era when "The National Pastime's" most prestigious (and highest paying) league excluded players on the basis of race.

The best parents' stories in one volume

Every time an issue of the La Leche League NEW BEGINNINGS magazine arrives in my mailbox, I read every page because I love to hear other parents' stories. This book was wonderful to me since it took the best stories from many older issues and pulled them together in one place. What's best is that although the book is older (1987), everything is still relevant. Breastfeeding is still about more than nutrition, and loving guidance and other mothering still make for strong families.

The best (and only) source of information on baseball in Louisville, KY in the late 19th century. It takes you from the first box score ever recorded in Louisville to their charter membership in the National League to their last year in major league basball in 1899. The best part of the book is the entire chapter devoted to Pete Browning, Louisville's only true superstar of the 19th century. With great pictures, humorous anecdotes, and a wealth of information, this book is the last word on baseball in 19th century Louisville.

I was one of the first residents of St. Augustine to buy this cookbook and I having been using it regularly since day one. Junior League books are some of the best cookbooks around. You get a collection of people's favorite recipes. There are local flavor recipes in this book including Minorcan and datil pepper recipes. It covers any occasion you may need, including potluck, desserts and full dinners. My favorite recipes are the Lemon Bread and the French Mint Bars. One unique aspect is the chapter separators, which features drawings and history of sites in the nation's oldest city - St. Augustine, FL. Plus, proceeds from the sale of the book go to the wonderful projects of the Junior Service League of St. Augustine.
