Watch out, Hansa!

Review Date: 2004-06-24
The unpretentious Brigadier General Adam DePrince is a real man...he likes his coffee strong and black, and has a desire for Mexican food at Cuca's. He also likes his retired life, giving writing tips to his neighbor, an aspiring writer named Paul Norwood. But at last, he must take a break from the diligence needed to become a successful writer when he is called out of his retirement to do some expert sleuthing for his government. The Hansa is out there, and General Adam DePrince is methodical and unrelenting in pursuing his goal, which is uncovering potential terrorist attacks before it is too late. Gaining insightful information from the investigation of high power brasses and official figures, this story will take the reader to a plethora of global destinations and executive strong holds. From bombs, handcuffs, and assassinations, to conceding traitors and betrayal, this book has plenty of intrigue, espionage, and gunpowder terrors. Mr. Norwood spins a yarn and plays a cameo role, which makes his writing even more unique. With an ending that climaxes to an explosive countdown, this book begs for another dangerous undertaking. General DePrince, you're far from finished!

Tim's Comments:
The Hanseatic League is the first in what I am hoping is a long series of Adam DePrince books. Paul Norwood has shown us he has got what it takes to spin a gripping tale. With more twist and turns than a North Carolina mountain back road, he will keep the reader on the edge of their seat. They will stay that way all the way to the end.
Once you have The Hanseatic League in your hands, you will want to cancel your plans, lock the door and unplug the phone. You are not going to want anything to bother you until you have finished. This reviewer loved the book and is left with only one question. Mr Norwood, what is next?
Recommendation: HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

White-knuckled Suspense and Surprise
I just finished reading "The Hanseatic League" authored by Paul Norwood. I found the tale gripping and so suspenseful I simply couldn't turn the pages fast enough. Paul takes us on a journey of international espionage and terror that hits so closely to home I find myself awake at night pondering my own personal security and the future of my beloved country. I truly hope the fascinating characters he created have real-life counterparts and they do their job equally well. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and highly recommend it to any reader interested in white-knuckled suspense and surprise.
WELL DONE MR. NORWOOD.

HARD KNOX IS A BOOK BY FORMER NFL HEAD COACH CHUCK KNOX. HE REALLY MAKES THIS BOOK BOTH INTERESTING AND ENTERTAINING. HIS INSIGHT AND EXPERIENCE AS A FOOTBALL COACH IN EVERY LEVEL POSSIBLE IS WELL WORTH THE READ FOR ALL FOOTBALL FANS. WHERE EVER (GROUND) CHUCK HAS GONE HE HAS BEEN A WINNER. FROM THE RAMS TO THE BILLS AND FINALLY THE SEAHAWKS HIS TEAMS HAVE MADE THE PLAYOFFS BUT THE ELUSIVE SUPER BOWL WAS NEVER REACHED. I CONSIDER CHUCK KNOX TO BE ONE THE MOST SUCESSFUL COACHES IN RECENT YEARS AND ENJOYED WATCHING HIS TEAMS PLAY. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK FOR ALL FOOTBALL FANS.

I really enjoyed this book, it was very interesting to get a behind the scenes look at a coach in the NFL. I think that Chuck Knox is one of the more interesting personalities in the game. I'm a Seahawk fan so I especially enjoyed it, but even if I wasn't I think I would still find it interesting.

Chuck Knox - winner in football and life....

Chuck Knox worked his way up from the poor steel towns of Western Pennsylvania to become a top coach in the NFL for over 20 years. Laced with interesting anecdotes and great humor throughout, this book not only shows that hard work and desire can lead to the top, it gives common sense advice on how to keep your head about you when you get there. For any fan of the pro game, but especially the Jets during the 60's, Rams during the 70's, or Bills or Seahawks during the 80's, this is a must read. All of your favorite players from Joe Namath to Brian Bosworth are covered. I would think that this book is almost required reading for any ambitious football coach, high school or otherwise. The wisdom and common sense approach Knox used in dealing with the multitude of personalities involved in team sports could apply to any level of athletics. Chuck Knox never won the Super Bowl as a head coach, but was always a winner- in football and in life.

This is simply a wonderful book. These black and white photographs, mostly non action shots, taken over 3 or 4 years at the same little league park in working class east Baltimore have an emotional power and honesty that is both rare and quite moving. The book works on so many levels: children, baseball, families, cities, and art.

A photographer's labor of love and homage to kid baseball

This is obviously a labor of love for Connolly. The beautiful black and white photographs, a mixture of portraiture and reportage, capture the essence of kids playing baseball. This is reinforced by Cal Ripken's moving foreword, in which he writes that "for this brief phase in my life, the playing field was level and everyone was equal." It reminds me of Butterworth's revelation in "The Bad News Bears" that these are just kids who love to play; they have yet to place winning above fun.

THE INDEPENDENT CAROLINA BASEBALL LEAGUE... is a masterpiece of regional history. Sure, it's about baseball and the almost religious nature of its practice during this time and place. But there is so much more in the details about social structure , convention and the fine line between the public and private.

Utley and Verner were quite diligent with their research. The collection of photos and the league statistics corroborate the many anecdotes and colorful player profiles. The linear narrative is perfect and puts some rails under what might have otherwise been a haphazard assembly of good yarns. I highly recommend this book to anyone who cares about baseball, the pioneer spirit, and well-documented history.

A great read for baseball fans and non-fans alike.

This is a wonderful book. Not only is it a story of baseball, but it is a story of the Depression-era South and life in the textile mill towns of North Carolina. Incredibly well researched and full of great photographs, this book will appeal to anyone with an interest in history even if they are not a baseball fan. As a baseball book it relates the great stories and legendary expoits of small town heroes from the Golden Era of the sport. As a social history it shows how textile mills were the lifeblood of dozens of small towns, a part of Southern life that is all to often forgotten today.

Beautifully and Sensitively Illustrated: A Must Read

The sweet, tender illustrations of this heart breaking--then heart healing--story make it really come alive for children and adults alike.

Nicole Tadgell's characters arouse a tender affinity for the lovable protagonist Joe Joe as well as the assumptive shopkeeper: we see anger, regret, conciliation clear as the written text. The story is a fine lesson in courage and character for all races.

And children interested in baseball will be intrigued by the vintage photography of past baseball heroes, learning a great deal of the history of the game in tandem with the history of African Americans in the 20th century.

Just Call Me Joe Joe begins the biblical passage John 10:3, "...and the sheep shall hear his voice, and he calls his own sheep by name." Written especially for African-American children ages 6-10 by Jean Alicia Elster and nicely illustrated in color by Nicole Tadgell, Just Call Me Joe Joe is the story of a 10-year-old African-American boy who must deal with a shop owner who mistakenly assumes that Joe Joe was part of the gang who just trashed the store. Joe Joe must find the courage and spirit to return and convince the shop owner of the truth. Just Call Me Joe Joe is a highly recommended and strong story of moral conviction and justice for young readers.

This was a exciting book! The Justice League is great and Lobo is one of my favorite villains. It was fun seeing Lobo trick Superman into being bad. And it was fun seeing Superman pretending to be bad so that he could do the right thing.

If you like the animated series, you'll love this book. You'll find every character on every page, every character of the Justice League and Injustice Gang. It even has a few photo shots from the series.

You'll find information of both the animated show and comics. There is data on parts from the animated show like the League itself, the Injustice Gang, Lex Luthor and more. From the comics, there's a group of beings from space who had the same powers as Superman, Chronos and the Cold Warriors who consisted of Mr.Freeze, Captain Cold, Killer Frost and other iced based foes. There is also info on characters who were in the comics such as Adam Strange, Aquaman, The Atom. The only thing that wasn't included was the Thangarian invasion of Earth and some other things form the animated show. Most of it seems to have been based on the comics rather then the animated show.

Still it's an interesting book and it's good for young readers and newcomers to Justice League, whether it's the animated show or comics.

Great fun, but a few more pages would have been great

Jason Hall's Visual Guidebook to the animated Justice League is colorful and fun. Tykes should like it. Like all the DK books, great care has been taken in chosing the captions and accompanying text.

It's a great way to introduce the younger readers to the world of the Justice League, though I would have waited a few years until the Justice League Unlimited run had been completed, so the book had a great amount of stories to draw fun. It also goes the extra mile with some pages on Aquaman, the Atom, and Adam Strange.

A few flaws for the completist out there. The info on Hawkgirl is somewhat inaccurate after the revelations in the second season finale, "Starcrossed," the panals are mostly taken from the comics rather than the animated series, and some "fun" pages like a detailed blueprint of what goes where in the Watchtower might have given the little ones a bit more material to chew on.
Again, some material on other characters such as Metamorpho, Darksaid, Dr. Fate, would have been great.

Still, it's fun for what it is. Hopefully DK will produce a few more of these in the years to come.

From Samiin Scandanavia to Native peoples of Montana and the Amazonian rain forests, the health of indigenous peoples is being compromised in the name of economic development. This book is a series of interviews, case studies, and stories told by indigenous peoples themselves and offers solutions to the problems of environmental degradation facing all of us. With a Forward written by Dr. Eberahrd Wenzil, Deputy Director of the School of Public Health, Griffith University, Brisbane, Australia, and a Preface by Hopi educator, Dr. Gregory Cajete, this readable yet academic work provides a forum for indigenous peoples to speak out and adds an exciting dimension to any environmental health curriculum.

This is another book by an amazing woman: she covers "both sides" and she does it well. This is a book with frightening news, and the unfortunate thing is, the news won't get any better unless we, i.e. White Man, learn to change the way we do business in each and every domain. Looks like Colomeda wants to tell us to change. Looks like we will have substantial difficulties to follow her advice. But it's just that difference which makes the book a valuable read ... get it now.

READ THIS before your kid hits the ice!

This is an excellent introductory book for parents of children who want to play hockey. It covers all the types of equipment involved, and offers suggestions on how to buy what you need. It discusses how to be a responsible hockey parent, and how to support and encourage your young player. Special attention is paid to the unique needs of girls (there aren't many for kids in the age group being covered by this book), and also the particular needs of goaltenders. I checked this book out from my local library, but have decided to buy a copy to keep at home for reference.

Excellent book for First time Hockey Parents

This is the best book for first time hockey parents. I had no idea how to tape a stick, buy shoulder pads, skates or even that there was such a thing as a neck guard.

The book is written by a physician and hockey lover, who knows his stuff. It has given me a lot of confidence when dealing with "more knowledgeable" parents and coaches. It has also helped me make it more fun for my kid.

If you have a kid who is going to play hockey: BUY THIS BOOK!!! The information on equipment and injuries is worth the price alone. Knowing how tape a stick and buy equipment has saved me a lot of time and money.
