I have prepared many of the recipes from this book and have found all I have tried to be wonderful. They are easy to follow, and the collection of recipes is diverse and appeals to the most discriminating of tastes. This book also provides visuals on the art of artistic meal presentation. Of the cookbooks that I own, I know if a meal is prepared from this book all will be happy, especially me!

I've had this cookbook for several years and I think it's terrific. I haven't made a recipe from it that disappointed me.

The recipes are not difficult to make, so anyone should be able to cook from this book. The food turns out a bit sophisticated. You could easily use some of these recipes for a dinner party.

Two of the recipes I really enjoyed from this book were Mustard Ginger Pork Chops and Minestrone. The pork chops were wonderful - you basically add a simple marinade (pretty easy to do!). The minestrone is wonderful! It is probably my favorite soup ever. It uses ham to give it a smoky flavor, then you add a number of veggies and pasta to it, and top it off with cilantro and parmesan cheese. This is a great soup to make at the beginning of the week and have it for lunch every day for the rest of the week. I've made this soup so many times and I've even tried to freeze it (although I wouldn't recommend that). This is also a good soup to fix ahead of time if you're going to have guests. Add a salad and some bread and you have quite a nice lunch.

Besides the recipes, the photography in this book is amazing. It's quite different than other cookbooks. I would have to consider the photos as "art" because they are of the quality of framed photographic art. I keep thinking of taking this book off of my cookbook shelf and using it as a "coffee table book" because it is so beautiful.

Overall, I would recommend this cookbook to almost anyone. The recipes are simple but elegant and the pictures make the book a joy just to look through.

This book will hardly fit back on the shelf: Yellow post-it notes hang from its margins, nearly a pad-ful so far, each marking a high-taste recipe. I've only had the book a year, but it has fast become a favorite.

With menus provided in each section comprising this culinary sequel to the Junior League of Columbus' America Discovers Columbus cookbook, America Celebrates Columbus is a superb compendium of "bountiful harvest" recipes that are as easy-to-prepare and kitchen friendly as they are nutritious and delicious. Of special note is that portion of this outstanding cookbook dedicated to teatime at the Kelton House. From Miniature Lavender Cheesecakes; Black-Eyed Pea Salsa; Green Salad with Jiacama and Orange Poppy Seed Dressing; and Kelton House Chicken Divan; to Salmon Tetrazzini; Barbecued Green Beans; Old-Fashioned Oatmeal Pancakes; Chili Pecan Biscuits; and Red Velvet Cake with Mock Whipped Frosting, American Celebrates Columbus will prove a seminal favorite for any family or community library cookbook collection.

This is a delightful book and CDROM which are full of useful tips and info. Hopengarten impressively thought of everything and still expresses interest in learning and sharing more.

We're certainly fortunate in this wonderful hobby of ours to have talented individuals like Fred Hopengarten, Jim O'Connell and other volunteer counsels to share valuable insight into the various aspects of our hobby.

Whenever another ham knocks the ARRL, my response always includes remarks to the effect that everything I know about ham radio comes from ARRL literature. This magnum opus certainly further justifies my thoughts in this regard.

For those who find themselves facing potential new, adverse local government regulation, ARRL has recently released a new publication, Antenna Zoning for the Radio Amateur by Fred Hopengarten, K1VR. This is an excellent new publication that provides a lot of material to help you as you approach local governing bodies to be able to put up an antenna.

There is a CD ROM with documents you can use directly to aid your efforts. The book may seem a bit pricey ..., but if you find that you are in need of an attorney's services in your quest, you can save more than the cost of this book in attorney's fees because the book provides a treasure chest of material your attorney will not have to search out! I highly recommend this book!

A MUST read for anyone planning to put up a tower

I am really excited about this book. I get a lot of e-mails and telephone calls asking for zoning information. This new ARRL book is a MUST read for anyone planning to put up a tower. Get the book and read it before you even look at an antenna catalog.

Fred Hopengarten, K1VR, a communications lawyer and contester, has written a truly fine book designed to save the serious amateur a lot of money, time and grief. It is a must read for any ham who plans to buy a house and put up a dream antenna system. Even before you buy the house or begin looking at tower and antenna catalogs you should get a copy of the book. There is practical advice on selecting a real estate agent, dealing with a town clerk, and getting a copy of the local building codes. Fred covers every subject you can think of and then adds quite a few you didn't think of but should have.

Don't be put of by the ... price tag as it will be the best money you will spend on the entire house and antenna project. Your initial reaction may be that this is way too much for a book that is only 286 pages long, but be aware that you also get a CD-ROM crammed full of precedent setting cases, sample letters and documents designed to help you and your lawyer prepare you zoning application and or appeal. Director Jay Bellows, KØQB, a Minnesota lawyer who serves on the Tower Assistance Committee with me, feels that the CD-ROM is the best part of the book as you or your lawyer can edit the PDF files using Word and tailor them to your needs.

Even for an old veteran of many tower battles this a truly invaluable book. Fred takes us through the entire process providing detailed guides along the way with tips on how to talk to town officials and what not to say. These are very important things easily forgotten. He makes the point that you should at all times be the good guy in the white hat who lets the town know what he is doing an why. It is surprisingly easy to read which is a real accomplishment with a subject as detailed and complicated.

The book is designed to give you a view of the entire process and help you avoid the pitfalls that others have fallen into along the way. It is a college course in the subject at a graduate level. Some few may discover after reading it that they came across the book too late in the process and would be better off changing their plans or looking for a second dream house.

It will save me hours on the telephone when a local ham calls for advice. But even for them the book may be helpful in making that decision possible. The best advice I can now give is before you even begin to look for a house, read Antenna Zoning for the Radio Amateur. Failure to buy and read it is almost certainly guaranteed to cost you many times more in money and time wasted.

With the searchable CD-ROM, you can find and read about anything in the printed edition, and makes everything really easy to find fast. I LOVE it!!

Section on DIGITAL SIGNAL PROCESSING is a great balance between theory, math (just enough to get us by!), and actual practical applications. You can actually understand it without the heavy Differential Equations and Calculus... and come away with a decent understanding of DSP.

An off-shoot of DSP is the SDR (Software Defined Radio), and that is covered in here too. What it is, how it works, and actual implementations. This is an evolving Leading Edge Technology item, so of course, things are changing on a daily basis... but it's still a great way to get started if you're new to SDR's.

Thank you, ARRL! For making keeping up with Electronics Technology something the rest of us can manage with your very timely help.

"The ARRL Handbook for Radio Communications" is a classic never equaled in the discipline. It is the most compact, practical assmeblage of notes on radio frequency communication in existence.

While the 'A' in ARRL stands for 'Amateur' don't let that fool you. I am an electrical engineer of 25 years professional experience. My specialty is electro-magnetic compatibility or EMC. I and many of my associates, (some with PHd's in electrical engineering) refer to this book when it comes time to apply theory and get something operating. ARRL makes a systematic effort to keep this important reference current with the latest technological developments.

This book is great if you're trying to build your first ham set or doing more advanced professional work.

The ARRL Handbook for Radio Communications (formerly known as the Radio Amateur's Handbook) has been around since the early 20th century. It has always been both technical and practical. My only criticism, and it is from a personal viewpoint, is that in recent years there is more technical detail and fewer practical projects, but don't let that stop you! Indispensable.

Review Date: 2007-08-28
I am a fan of good coming of age stories, and I have a soft spot for small press novels. But the modesty of my expectations for Richard Westley's B league Champs was certainly influenced by the book's plain jane title and the bargain basement cover design.
The story inside proved a revelation. It is somewhat quirky and there are some flat and stiff patches, but it is also fresh and surprisingly layered and the characters and atmosphere and events stay with you.
Some of the page-turning quality comes from the tension inherent in a sports story - will the scrappy Little league team jell and find success?
But this is not a simplistic story that unfolds in predictable ways. Characters deepen and surprise, and relationships develop and change in believably complicated ways.
There is Mr. Aquino, the Filipino coach who is simply a gem. The mystery of Cal and what goes on in his home, a hovel oddly described as cloaked in the greasy haze and smells from the restaurant next door, and of course Cal's tragic, sensual mother.
One wishes this book could find the larer audience it deserves.

B League Champs tells the story of a boy, our narrator whom we know only as "Withers," growing up and coming of age in 1963 Chicago, just before Kennedy was killed. The story, ripped down to its basic core, is about the end of innocence and the realization that friends are not just the people you know, but the people you've come to understand and love; friends are those you cannot live without. Also a story of rising above defeat, we are shown the way through shakey reliances of the Whithers family: a father who is never really there, a mother who does her best, and four boys, some more weathered to the world than others. B League Champs teaches us the meaning of love and loss, hope and triumph, and, in its roots, heroism. By the last sentence, B League Champs has us remembering our own childhoods, where we came from, and that we are not impervious to fate. B League Champs stands out and tells us to dream.

I recently finished reading Richard Westley's wonderful novel "B League Champs." I highly recommend this coming of age story of a young boy's journey toward adolescence through little league baseball during his formative summer of 1963. This book will register with any American male who ever donned a little league uniform in hopes of becoming a future major leaguer (regardless of his true abilities!). This book paints a vivid, realistic, and poignant picture of what it was like (and still is) for many boys and girls growing up in middle class America. Life is complicated outside the four walls of your home, adults can be as immature as your peers, and society's ills do not preclude children who simply wish to just "play ball!" Read this book! You will find yourself quickly turning the pages and wanting more as you wrap yourself around these very real characters who become your friends. Rekindle memories you forgot you had...of a simpler time in your life, when summertime was for swimming and playing ball, girls were just beginning to catch your eye, and parents held children to ethical standards that are sadly ignored more and more today. Recommended for male and female teens as well as adults longing for a great story of the competitive spirit coming second to sportsmanship, honest fun, and integrity.

Sweet revenge. Those foolish young men at Dartmouth thought they'd haze the newly arrived coeds because as Dartmouth men, they were superior. Well, Barreca balances the ledger in this book--and big time. Those men are unmasked as nothing more than boys who think that by acting smart they were really smart. Think again. Barreca has seen through masculine insecurity and has shown us what a really smart, sensitive, and observing woman can make out of a difficult situation. This is a snappy, funny, really surprising and charming book. Give a copy away to that young woman heading off to college. She'll love it.

My husband bought this cookbook for me at the Indianappolis Airport on his way home from a business trip. I loved it so much that I wanted to get copies for family, but found it very difficult. I am thrilled to see it is on Amazon now! Nearly every recipe is a hit, and most are really easy to make. Among my favorites are: Crunchy Green Beans, Fall Tomato Fennel Soup, Savory Spinach Toss, Fish Fillets with Sweet Red Peppers, Basil and Mustard... the list goes on and on. There is also a section in the back that has menus for different types of parties (graduation, summer cookout, etc...) which is great for people like me who have a hard time matching types of foods for certain events. Definitely a MUST HAVE!!!!

I bought this on a whim in the Indianapolis airport, but the cookbook turned out to be a tremendous find. Many recipies focus on one specific flavor, such as the delicious crunchy green beans or poached fish with pesto. Others blend flavors magnificently, like the white bean chile recipe. I've coached little league for a few years now and feel that overall I do a good job, but when it comes to instructing pitchers I'm not much help. I was never a pitcher myself and dont give great advice-mostly "throw strikes and stay positive". As far as mechanics-I'm not much help.

After reading about the book in our local newspaper and being told by my son that he wants to pitch this year I thought I'd check it out. It was a good idea. It's very informative-I especially like how he has photos of major league pitchers demonstrating the ideas he's writing about. The drills and the discussion of the different grips and pitching strategies are going to give me something to work on with my son and the other pitchers this year-if it ever warms up. I'd highly recommend it.

This book is easy to follow and has helped my coaching of young pitchers this winter tremendously. The pictures show exactly what I should teach and the book covers everything from grips to when pitchers should throw certain pitches to how to get hitters out. I would think any pitcher or coach at any level from little league to the Major leagues would benefit from this book. All of us coaches should have it!

If you think you know something about the history of our top three American sports, you should try this one. Fox will tell you so much about what happened that you will shake your head saying, "I didn't know that." He tells his story eloquently. The breath and depth of his knowledge in some popular areas is awesome, especially his account of the evolution of the jump shot. I was left impressed with the degree of research that was necessary for such an interesting book. While his selection of pictures is interesting, it is the factual research concerning little known facts that will leave you a more knowledgable student of sports in America.

Review Date: 2005-10-05
Most sports books focus on a single sport; this book is unusual in that it deals with three: baseball, football, and basketball, all on the pro level. In a terrific opening chapter, Fox discusses what he considers to be the defining moment for each sport, and for each it ends up being the same concept: putting the ball in the air (the "invention" of the jump shot in basketball by Kenny Sailors, the utilization of the forward pass by Benny Friedman, and the sudden blossoming of the home run with Babe Ruth).

Each team is then given a separate chapter in which Fox relates its early developments; Fox is particularly interested in the formative years of each sport: baseball prior to 1900, football when it was more a slugfest and teams just slammed into one another, and basketball when it actually was played inside a cage (thus the term "cagers" for basketball players). Finally, there's a chapter each on the "national" team for each sport: the Yankees, the Packers, and the Celtics.

Fox has done his reasearch well, but the book is more than just another history book. Humorous anecdotes abound, and Fox is forthright about how drink, drugs, and sex ruined many a career. You won't find your typical hero worship here either (except for maybe Ruth, Friedman, and Bill Russell), just a lot of interesting information about the three most popular pro sports in America. Highly recommended.
