I rarely laugh when reading books, even when its really funny.
Reading this book though, I was constently cracking up.
The advice is ACTUALLY usefull, it tells the good and bad of film making.
Im keeping this short and simple, so to sum up. This is a truely awesome book.

An essential for aspiring filmmakers and fans.

I don't think I read through 300+ pages so fast in my life. It's incredibly informative on making your own flick from conception to distribution and it is one of the easiest reads I've had. Its also funny as hell, filled with that Kaufman wit.

If you liked Rebel Without a Crew, you'll love this one.

If you're a Troma fan pick it up. If you want to make movies pick it up. If you want a look into the life of a man with an extremely interesting story pick it up.

This is a book I will be returning to both for reference and enjoyment.

I bought this book hoping to have a fun read about making movies and this persons experience. Sadly, what I got was a book load of expletives and degrading ideas of what to throw into a scene them film it. I take away three stars for the no effort put in to not writing a fun book that many can read. I understand the shock value of the title, fine, but curses in every paragraph? I'm not saying to write like a bored, stiff, old tenured expert... But the name calling and mud slinging is not necessary (atleast not all of it). I give it two stars for the street level info. all independents need to know before making a film. Please do protect yourselves.

This is an interesting book for Troma fans and independent film fans. It is really just a book that is meant to entertain and tell stories rather than provide real helpful insight about how to make films. While I appreciate the show of support for independent art, the book doesn't really seem to support independent creation other than Troma's own brand (despite the title of the book). While I will admit that the book is very funny to read, I think sometimes it crosses into somewhat arrogant and self-important banter.

To me this book is more about Troma patting itself on the back and reflecting on their wacky stories then about really empowering anyone but themselves. Read if you are a fan of Troma, not if you are looking for encouragement.

Make Your Own Damn Movie book is the best make your own movie books on the market. You won't find better and honest information like this anywhere, and not for the price either. I have met Lloyd Kaufman and talked to him about making films and he really knows what he is talking about. His book gives you a very fun and enjoyable read, and the information will help you get on the right track to Making Your Own Damn Movie. This book has become my bible for making films, His view and way of speaking has changed the way that average Joe's can go out and Make Their Own Damn Movie!

If you are interested in making a film or just looking for a good laugh you must buy this book.

Review Date: 2008-03-16
In this book, Lloyd Kaufman, president of the impossibly quirky Troma Studios, shares insights and practical advice about making low-budget (or no-budget) feature films. Lloyd's writing style is just as unusual as the movies he directs, as he meanders aimlessly from self-deprecating autobiography to detailed, spur-of-the-moment instructions on how to fake an onscreen head crushing or make actors appear to vomit green foam. There's also plenty of out-of-place crude and scatological humor peppered heavily throughout. I wouldn't have expected anything else from Kaufman, whose unfathomably eccentric (but amiable) personality and genuine love for the art of do-it-yourself filmmaking shine through on every page. Fans of Troma, young and old, owe it to themselves to read this book. It really is an inspiring read for all of us who have the filmmaking bug but often become too easily defeated by lack of funds or crew members. Long live Troma!

[...]I got this book as a birthday present in Christmas of '05, back when I was entertaining ideas of becoming a filmmaker in addition to just being a critic. While the need for actually putting something up on the big (or little) screen has passed for the time being, I am forever grateful for the spell due to the fact that it put this book (and Lloyd's equally engaging MAKE YOUR OWN DAMN MOVIE) in my possession. When I was done reading it, I knew two things: Lloyd is an amazing human being, and the only limits for success are those we put upon ourselves.

No matter what your passion is, Lloyd Kaufman gives you the inspiration to go out and damn well do it. Don't have the money to do it? Find a way to make it happen regardless. You'll never have all the money you want/need to do things the way you want to, unless you sell your soul to the godless corporations, so just kick that imagination of yours into high gear and get the job done. I recently edited a horror film reference book - a lifelong dream - and much of that inspiration came from meeting Mr. K on and off the page.

I have met Lloyd several times since at various conventions and am always impressed by his passion and his accessibility to his fans. He is constantly surrounded by adoring admirers, but he takes the time to acknowledge each one of them and everyone who comes in contact with him feels that they have had a "real" moment with Lloyd. That is a true gift. But if you want to spend some quality time with the great man himself, pick this book up. You'll have a new best friend and a new hero to look up to.

Into the mind of a truly independent Film director.

If you've ever watched a Troma film then you know what to expect from this book. Blood/gore, sex, nudity, head-crushings and more. Only in book form. What starts out as a how-to quickly breaks out into a great history of Troma films.
Lloyd Kaufman tells it like it is (in his mind that is.) But also comes across as genuinely passionate about what he does.
The only thing I can say is that if you've ever watched a Troma film and enjoyed it (even a tiny bit) then get this book.
Don't forget Lloyd's other book "Make Your Own Damn Movie!" and the Toxic Avenger Paperback.
Money spent on Troma is money spent on the things that make movies fun!

I've never read a more informative book. It not only points out what you should do to promote, it actually gives you the tools to do it. Both phone numbers and websites that will really help you. It is the first self help book that doesn't tell you what it is going to tell you, IT JUST TELLS YOU. How novel. It will take me weeks to implement all the information, but each step is clearly presented. If you write to sell you need this book as flowers need rain.

Great book for self-published authors and small publishers
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2006-06-12
The position of a first-time self-published author is not an enviable one; you've already written your manuscript, invested money in typesetting, cover design and an initial print run, you've purchased an ISBN number and your book is in Ingram's database, so it can be ordered in stores. You wait a week, and then another, for book sales to start coming in. Finally, realization begins to set in - just because it is possible for someone to walk into a book store and order your book, it isn't very likely that it will happen, because nobody knows about it.

Marilyn and Tom Ross have written an excellent resource for self-published authors and small publishers who want to get their book sales going, and their techniques are considerate of the budgets that most self-published authors are constrained by.

If you successfully self-publish your book, there are three steps for you to follow:

1. Write a solid, clear and engaging book that people will enjoy reading. Refer to books about clear and effective writing.

2. Work your way through the publishing process. Refer to Dan Poynter's "Self-Publishing Manual".

3. Get the word out about your recently published work - this is exactly what the Marilyn and Tom Ross show you how to do in "Jump-Start Your Book Sales".

In short, if you are a self-published author, are considering self-publishing, are a small publisher, or even if you're a traditionally published author who wants to take a more active role in the promotion of your book (which most publishers will expect you to do anyway), you should read this book.

through the self publishing process of my new book. More than a notion, self publishing is very rewarding but extremely time consuming, and SUPER hard work. I thought writing the book was hard. Ha! That was the easy part!!! Thank goodness I bought this book, as its given me many great ideas for marketing and promotion. It's wonderful to have written the best book in the world, but it doesn't mean anything if no one knows about it! Thanks Marilyn!!!!

It's Never Too Early to Start Marketing

Do you know when you should start marketing your book? Marilyn Ross does, and in "Jump Start Your Book Sales" she reveals the answer. (Hint: It's before you start writing it!)

Before, during, and after -- in fact. Regardless of where you are in the writing and publishing process, book marketing should be at the forefront of your thinking. Is your book even marketable? What is the market? What length of book are those people used to buying? Why would they buy yours instead of (or in addition to) all the other similar books on the market? What will differentiate yours? These are the kind of questions you should be asking yourself even before you put pen to paper, or fingers to keys, as the case may be.

These strategic concepts are the bread and butter of the pages comprising "Jump Start." Don't be surprised if you find meat in the middle that you can really sink your teeth into. This isn't another rehash of duplicative information available for free from countless websites. This is the real deal, written by the co-founder of the Small Publishers Association of North America. Highly recommended reading before you start writing, before you start publishing, and after you think you've marketed it all. - Brent Sampson, author of Self-Publishing Simplified

Great book for the beginner & advanced pro. Gives you many suggestions on how to get the shot finished with out spending a lot of money. Many movie clips included on the DVD for examples in support of the text. But what I found is that this book is just fun to read. There is a no holds bared, if you want to make a movie then just do it, "I hate green screen" attitude that encourages everyone they CAN make movies. There is technical stuff on setting up shots & After Effect is the only post software used, but you can skip over or breeze by these on your first read because you'll be using this book as a primer as you make movies of all kinds..."just do it!".

This is a fantastic book and a fun read. I think I read it twice in the week that it arrived. The included DVD is a nice treat as well as it's pretty cool to see Stu's movie and all of the effects and techniques discussed in the book 'in action.'

If I have one complaint about the book it's that it doesn't come with a DV Camera as after reading, you'll want to run out and make your movie.

Look at the author's own film...

Review Date: 2008-04-19
Somebody's got to be honest here -- the movie that Stu made with all of his techniques is simply godawful on nearly every level. In fact, his emphasis on "rebel" technique might very well have you redirecting your creativity in all the wrong ways. Films are about good STORIES.

That being said, for the discerning reader, there is an enormous amount of useful information in this book and it will really get you technically up to speed fast. For that the "guide" really does deserve five stars. But what we have here is also a recipe book for making the most cliche-ridden Hollywood imitations, which is the furthest thing from what movies need in right now.

Thank you MR. Simens... I have read many a film production book. None of them compare to this one. This book is clear and the most organized piece of work I have yet to come across. He speaks in terms that is easy to follow and understand, with a large dose of reality. Reality that can get your movie made. He wants you to do it. He has made your production list for you. No need for other books (money saved). Please, if you have read thus far and have not purchased this book, do so now. You will not be dissapointed... And for the expert(s) (with the three stars or less) Get real. Swallow your pride. This book is perfect. Mr. Simens knows what he is talking/writing about. EVERYTHING you need to succeed is right here. Get your first movie off of the ground, then go from there. Again, Thank you Mr. Simens.

I have produced eight short films in four years and currently preparing for my first feature-film. Dov's book it geared for those making a feature-film but useful for shorts as well. I always recommend From Reel to Deal to any filmmaker who has not read it already. Do yourself a favor and buy or borrow this book. It is a must-read for filmmakers, or as Dov's says PRODUCERS.

I've wanted to take one of Dov's workshops but they're never close to where I live so I bought this book which I like. However, with a copyright of 2005 I would have thought it would have more web information (urls, etc) in it. I suspect most of the information was compiled before the web got popular which has been a while. Oh well. I emailed Dov last year too and nobody bothered to reply. Still, for the price, very good info.

Review Date: 2007-09-20
I've read every book on Independent Filmmaking that I can get my hands on and this one book has more useful information than all of the others combined. I'm now shooting my forth feature length film and if I'd had this book before shooting the first three I'd be a lot better off today!

Mr. Nerd is apparently illiterate; though Simens does use a million dollar budget as an example of how to allocate your funds as he goes through all of the steps, this book absolutely does address budgets of every size from ten million dollars right down to your five thousand dollar digital feature for the Direct To Video market. I really don't see how anybody who had actually read the book could possibly miss this as the various budget constraints are addressed in almost every chapter as he takes you through the steps. In fact, he even outlines a method for shooting a feature length, 35 millimeter film on a five thousand dollar budget.

The two chapters on screenplay writing have more useful information than any book that I've read on screenplay writing and applying these techniques to my latest screenplay has resulted in the best work that I've ever done! That's one of the beautiful things about this book; Simens is not an egocentric, long winded babbler. He gives you just what you need to know and how to go about it.

This is the first book I've read that actually has useful information on things like fund raising and distribution options and how you might avoid getting ripped off... something that happens to so many of us aspiring filmmakers all the time.

I could probably write twenty pages about why this is the best filmmaking book ever written, but I will just say that every single page is packed with valuable, useful, practical information that actually makes sense.

Anyone who is seriously considering producing or directing a feature film, or even a short for that matter, needs to read this book three times, then use it as a reference when you start filming.

Although I am a fairly traditional person, and my wedding is proving to be a reflection of many very traditional ideas, I think every bride is looking for a way to twist those traditions and make them their own... This book is a fresh and accepting look at having a wedding that truly reflects you and your marriage. Not to mention a support platform for going in what may be considered an unconventional direction! A great read even if you still believe that the only way to have a wedding is in a tux and white gown!

This book is the producer's version of Gray's "Anatomy of the Human Body." Without a doubt, Schreibman's text is the blueprint for any successful indie film and should be read and thoroughly consulted by every creative producer - experienced or otherwise. Furthermore, this book that can be extremely useful to directors and screenwriters because it provides a real understanding of what the producer does and how the other creative entities can best collaborate with the producer for creative and practical synergy. In short, this book is a must for anyone who wants to make movies.

No-nonsense bullet-proof advice

Review Date: 2004-07-17
I recently finished producing my own independent film and found this book right at the beginning of my post-production period.

I wish I had found it earlier. It is full of no-nonsense advice and information that is practically bullet-proof, and I ended up agreeing with about all of it. Schreibman, who apparently has a long history of producing films for t.v. and theatrical market, has paid his dues, done his homework, and knows another "feel-good" you-can-do-it book isn't necessary.

He tells you like it is, doesn't pull any punches, and helps you avoid the most common mistakes, both legally and aesthetically. Writing and directing are generally the more "arty" positions in film production - the Producer is supposed to keep the ship moving forward and avoiding any fatal mistakes. This book directs you in the right direction.

My film was a "micro-budget" film, and this book may ultimately be more useful for "larger" independent features, including ones with SAG deals, distribution in place, and budgets closer to 7 figures. While all the advice here applies to everyone making a movie, it's the attitude Myrl conveys that I really appreciated and believed in, more than some of his nuts-and-bolts info. The contract samples at the end were also very helpful when I went out and began looking for more help finding money to finish my film (which I eventually did).

Now I'm dreaming of using the rest of the info here for my next film!

Very often in this industry it can be smoke and mirrors...not here my friend. Myrl speaks from experience and gives it to you straight. You WILL understand the production process from start to finish after reading this book.

As an added note, I was so impressed with the book that I contacted Myrl to consult with me on a recent project. He delivered on his promises and helped me guide my project to a successful finish. A five-star book and a five-star person.

I'm just glad I read this book while my children are still young. Now I get to use all of Merilee's fabulous ideas from the start! This book reads so quickly too and the ideas don't require anything but the desire to have your children be truly, deeply happy in life. I love how she discusses our society's misinterpretation of self-esteem. True self-esteem comes from true self-sufficiency -- not from mommy and daddy always coming to the rescue! It's so refreshing! MUST READ! This is the instruction manual for parenting that should come with every new baby! :)

I recommend this to everyone I meet!

I'm highly considering giving this book to anyone having a baby. It is SOOO wonderful, I cannot possibly tell all the great things.

But in case you are wondering, everything is in this book. Ideas of how to handle allowances, jobs, money management (I wish I were taught these things!), etc, etc, etc.

For any parent out there that just wants to be a better one- READ THIS BOOK! And then pass it to anyone you know!

Fantastic!

Its been said before, but this is the best parenting book I have read. It is practical, fun to read, and full of ideas which will change your life. It provides your children with ways to gain experience, knowledge and direction. I hope my children will have many friends who were raised by parents who used this book. If I had to describe it in one word I would choose: empowering.

Every parent should read this!

I haven't even read all the way through this book yet, and already know it's probably one of the best guides out there for raising confident, capable, caring ADULTS. Too many parenting books focus on raising children, and end up forgetting that the goal is to one day have your children leave the nest and be able to get along fine without you. The section on financial training alone is invaluable. If all children were raised and trained with these ideals, there certainly wouldn't be the credit mess there is now. If you have kids, PLEASE read this book and takes it's ideas to heart. It may make you the odd one on the block, but it will make you a much better parent and your kids will thank you.

Wish I'd Had This YEARS Ago!

I am very impressed with the thoroughness with which the author addresses the topic of teaching children to work, save, and become independent adults. In all of the reading--and research--I've done, none compares with Boyack's "Plan" for parents to raise independent and confident children. Never before have I seen a detailed, age-appropriate "how-to" list of what we need to teach in our families to produce the kind of adults that seem to becoming more and more rare in our society. I admit that I am feeling a bit over-whelmed by The List, as my children are already 3, 8, 11, 14, and 18 years old (and I am therefore quite a bit behind the schedule!), but I figure "better late than never" and will do my best to get them prepared for life beyond the family home. All in all, suffice it to say I WISH I'D HAD THIS PLAN YEARS AGO!

This is a wonderful, hopeful book! If you feel you don't have control of your children, this book shows you how to gain respect and control while showing your children the dignity they deserve. This book has changed our family and our parenting. We aren't perfect, but we're a lot more happy. The advice is VERY practical and down to earth. It isn't all about theory...we all know we want kind, respectful, thoughtful, etc., children... but about tells you HOW to achieve that in your family. I recommend this book for ALL parents! Can't say enough about it and I've read a lot of parenting books!

Lots of useful guidance

I haven't seen other books about child discipline, so my review is based only on how helpful I found this one book. It's possible other books would be better.

The strong virtue of this book is that it has an extremely clear and (it seems) very well-justified method of getting kids to do what you want them to do; and it hammers the message home in many ways. Basically, it teaches a simple method but in great detail. The method can be stated in just a few sentences, actually, I think: if you want a child to behave, inform him in a matter-of-fact voice of what (reasonable) consequences will follow if he does not behave, or else give him a number of acceptable choices (and also specify what the consequence for doing anything else). If he obeys, praise him. If he does not obey, carry out the promised consequence unemotionally.

So far with our toddler, this seems to work very well. Moreover, while it might seem repetitious, the different ways of "coming at" the basic method actually helps to teach it. The fact that the method seems to work, and that it is explained pretty well, is why I give the book four stars.

I don't give it five stars for two reasons. First, while perfectly clear, the prose is pretty pedestrian; but it's not too bad, and given that the author has an Ed.D., it could have been much worse! More annoying, however, in the many examples given of adults speaking to children, the adults are made to say things like, "What's a better choice?" and "I appreciate your consideration," or presenting a number of options and then saying "What would you like to do?" In praise, the parent is made to say, "That was a good choice." How many parents talk this way, or want to talk this way? I'm sure some do, but geez. Maybe it's just me, but this makes the parents sound like condescending bureaucrats rather than, well, parents. Part of what's annoying here is that the children know that they are not in control. (Think back how this would have sounded to you as a child yourself!) So they can sense when a parent is being condescending in pretending that ultimately the child can "choose" to do something the parents don't want him to do. No, he can't, if we're setting limits; that's why they're called limits! An actually more respectful way, it seems to me, is to say--in a matter-of-fact voice and unemotionally, I'm sure MacKenzie has that right--"You can do X or Y. If you do anything else, I'm going to Z (take away the toy, whatever)." Or: "Please X. If you don't, I'm going to Y." And to praise compliance, you don't say, "That was a good choice," you say simply "Thanks, buddy" or "Thanks for doing X, good job." That seems less condescending to me.

This is purely stylistic, though. It's easy to come up with your own ways of talking to your kids, so this isn't a big deal.

The second problem I have is that MacKenzie sometimes adverts to this interesting thesis, that you teach your children how to solve problems by how you set limits or punish them. So, for instance, if you spank a child, you teach the child that violence is the way to solve problems. Or, if you argue with a child, you teach the child that arguing is the way to solve problems. In saying this, MacKenzie is at his least persuasive and helpful. I was looking for some evidence of this interesting psychological claim, but he presented none. The thesis probably has some grain of truth, but it just doesn't sound very plausible to me; I suspect it might have ideological grounds more than solid scientific grounds. In one case, the author tips his hand and undermines his own case when he says that his more "strong-willed" child would not turn down the television. The author threatened to turn it off if he did not, but the child refused, so off went the television. So far, so good--but they went through this "dance" 10 or 12 times (over a period of however many weeks or months) before the child started doing so when asked the first time. If the author's thesis about our disciplinary methods teaching more than we intend is correct, then what did this rigamarole teach his child? Perhaps that you get your way by being annoyingly repetitive.

Don't get me wrong--neither of these problems with the book really reduces its effectiveness very much. It's a very helpful book and I'm glad I bought it.

This is the first item I've ever written a review for but I found this book so helpful that I feel compelled mention how great it is. Being a new parent was entirely uncharted territory for me and this book made me feel like at least I have a shot at doing a decent job. My 4 year old is fiesty in a lot of ways but this book has enough realistic examples that I feel like I have the tools to deal with virtually any situation that arises. Can't recommend it enough.

An amazing, easy-to-read book with advice that works!!!

I cannot stop telling everyone about the greatness of this book!! I bought this book since my daughter was crying every morning when I dropped her off at daycare. This morning routine became so unbearable and I was so frustrated I started questioning myself, the daycare, the teachers etc. After reading only a few chapters, I used the advice given and it worked!! It really helped me to understand her behavior (and mine)The book has plenty of examples of how to talk to a child whether is a 4 year old (my daughter) or older. I was not aware I was being permissive or engaging in "the dance". Although I do not yell at my daughter since I did not want to be a parent who disrespects their child, I was screaming inside when she did not get ready on time or when she hung on my leg in the morning refusing to stay at daycare. This book has allowed my to see my daughters behavior from an outside perspective allowing me to stay calm, and consequently my daughter's behavior is totally different. It has been three weeks since I got the book, my daughter has not cried when I drop her off at daycare since then. She is so cooperative and the teachers cannot believe the change. I bought two other parenting books but the difference is that this book gives clear examples for the various situations of daily life and how to address the child without giving too many options, yet it still allowes them to make their own decisions. I love this book!

This book utilizes common sense when setting limits and disciplining your child. It is full of great examples in implementing the limits.
