A must-have for anyone visiting the Summit County area! Available at webersbooks.com

Excellent guide; times and difficulty ratings are great!

My husband and I have chosen several of the hikes included by Ms. Gilliland and, as neophyte hikers, have found them very enjoyable. Most importantly, we have come to depend on both the times given for the hikes as well as the difficulty ratings. I would not hesitate to take a hike from this book if it sounded attractive to me -- I'd know I could count on it being just as described

Well done!

Excellent book for hikers not really familiar with the Summit County area. I am from Ohio, and my family found the book most helpful in ranking the difficulty of hikes, estimating the time of our trips and how strenuous a hike we were looking at. Also the maps & directions were right on the money. Without this book we would have missed out on some fantastic hiking in the Breckenridge & Frisco areas!!

This book is full of great self-regulation strategies and activities that can be used at home, in the schools and out in the community. The strategies are fun, very practical and inexpensive. Take Five! includes strategy lists, clear activity suggestions and ways to adapt activities. I have found this book very helpful in preparing treatment plans and sensory diets. Kids love the activities. This book is a great support to the "How Does Your Engine Run?" Leader's Guide. Check it out, you will truly enjoy it!

This book is a great follow up to the How Does Your Engine Run Leader's Guide. I got both on the recommendation of a friend to help my son who has sensory integration issues. I love the quick and easy format. This book is packed full of great suggestions that are easy to implement in a variety of settings. We have used several of these games for my son. My oldest, who is more adept at regulating his states, enjoys these games as well so it's something we can do together as a family. This book will also grow along with my son because there are great ideas for the classroom and things he can participate in better as he gets older. I highly recommend this book!

Review: I see this book as a natural progression after the original Alert Program Leaders Guide. I start with the Alert Program Leaders Guide to teach clients and caregivers about how to identify and change arousal. My colleagues have begun with this book and are seeing great results even without the experience of using the original AP Leaders Guide.
I use the Take Five: Staying Alert at Home and School for designing treatment plans in a variety of settings. This book offers many activities that evolve around five different ways to change their response to environmental demands. It can be used for individual or group sessions. It offers teams, parents and kiddos more opportunity for self exploration and adaptive strategies to participate in the occupation of being a kid! The authors offer two games ("Alert-Go Fish" and "Alert- Bingo") on their website that are a good buy, but I do not see them available on Amazon.

This book should be called "This is the Best Children's Party Book Ever!" It has great ideas, but unlike most party books it tells you how to accomplish everything and make it a learning experience for your child and his or her friends. I loved it and would reccomend this book to anyone.

This book is organized by age, and then by theme -- as an early childhood educator, her observations on what a one, two, three, four or five year old will like and put up with are absolutely right on! Wish I'd had this book to plan my childs first three birthday parties. She has great age appropriate activities, as well as organizing checklists.

Wonderful Kitchen Supplement for Everyone

I originally bought this book for a friend who was afraid of her kitchen. She's been married for two years now, and LOVES this book! I bought a copy for myself and have similarly found it useful.
This book is convienent to use during the cooking process: if you don't understand a certain word in a recipe, look it up in the Kitchen Companion! It's alphabetically organized by ingredient or term and is meant to be used with recipes, not by itself. The entries offer a description of the item as well as helpful cooking suggestions and even some interesting background information on where things come from. It's beginner-friendly, and is a joy for more experienced cooks as well.

This is an incredibly valuable kitchen resource. If you are looking for information on apples, for example, there is a complete section on all different types of apples, which ones are best for baking, how to choose them, etc. That type of information is available for any type of food you can think of, plus kicthen tools and information, comparisons of different types of cookie sheets, saucepans, etc. This is in my top three food/cooking reference books.

Very Good Encyclopedia for Beginners.

Williams-Sonoma's `Kitchen Companion' is at least as good or better than books I have seen from similar commercial enterprises such as Home Depot and Smith and Hawken. The stated object of the book is to make up for the fact that fewer and fewer people learn how to cook at their mother's (or grandmother's) apron strings.

While the subtitle, `The A to Z Guide to Everyday Cooking Equipment & Ingredients' gives the impression of a dictionary approach, the straight alphabetical organization is compromised by a second objective to make the book interesting to pick up and read in your armchair instead of simply being a reference when you want to noodle your way through an unfamiliar recipe, tool, or ingredient. Thus, the book is organized much more like an encyclopedia with big articles on group subjects. Thus, instead of thirty (30) articles on individual herbs, there is one article on `Herbs' covering all common varieties.

I have mixed feelings about this organization, so it is important enough to point this out for your consideration.

As far as the quality of the material in the articles, I believe it is very high, although just a bit conventional now and then. For example, the article on microwave ovens says everything you would expect it to say, including the warning that when you double the volume of food, cooking time will also double. What it does not say is how inconvenient it is to use a microwave oven for certain tasks and how careful you have to be with your timing. Similarly, the article on how to make an omelet covers all the basics and firmly distinguishes the omelet from scrambled eggs or any other egg dish, and provides reasonably good diagrams, albeit a bit small and hard on the eyes. On the other hand, the article on the omelet covers much less than many good treatments I have seen.

In considering whether to buy this book, you must ask `For what information would I go to this book before going to `Larousse Gastronomique', `The Joy of Cooking', or Shirley Corriher's `Cookwise'? Of course, if you have none of these books, you will go to what you have. And, as a standin for these other books, this one is pretty good, especially for the relatively low list price.

If you have no other general cooking references and you are new to cooking, this may be one of the two or three best books to get. If you already own twenty cookbooks and have been cooking for at least a few years, you may want to pass on this, as I would if I were not reviewing it.

The book has a decent bibliography, but I think it would have been far, far better to have put references to other books at the end of each individual article. Then, this book would have been a uniquely valuable encyclopedia, extending our horizons far beyond its covers.

Handbook includes disease states, and categorizes medications of primary choice, and provides secondary alternatives. There are excellent abbreviated text outlining etiology and pathophysiological parameters. As well as step wise flow charts as a decision tool and guideline. The tables for medication dosing and comparability between different classes of drugs are extremely helpful, visually and content wise! In hospital pharmacy practice, this handbook has been my peripheral brain.

HATS OFF TO AVERY FOR HONEST ANATOMY!
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 2006-04-25
I would recommend this book for a remarkably simple reason: it is the only US medical text I know of that has the timetable for the desquamation of the male infant and childhood membrane, the balano-preputial lamina, even vaguely correct. It suggests, quite correctly, that this synechia can persist into late puberty. All other US medical books suggest that this membrane should be gone by age 5 or so, which is patently dishonest and based on Douglas Gairdner's error af anatomy of 1949 found in the BMJ.

This little bit of convenient dishonesty has meant injury to millions of US boys for over 50 years.

Hats off to Avery's for getting this important detail correct!!

This book is Historical information on both the area I grown up in and family bacvkground. I greatly enjojed not only ready this book, but found that being about to see many of the places and items mentioned in the bok added to my enjoyment. Please note that "Boy Captive of Canada" and "Boys of the Border" follows this. All 3 are excellant and contain much interesting information on the settlement of Western Mass.

This is the first in a series that cronicles young Stephen's life in an early American, frontier town and capture by indians from Canada. The book was not only hard to put down because of continual actions, but I was always learning a little bet here and there about early colional life and Native American life.

The first chapter was a little tough getting used to some of the Olde English spelling an phrases. But soon I no longer noticed them at all. I would recommend this book to anyone from about 5th grade and up.

I won't spoil the ending, but do yourself a favor and order "The Boy Captive in Canada" at the same time because the story doesn't end in this book. It continues into the next.

I have owned City Cuisine since it was published back in 1989. I have made many of the reciepies in this book and each one is superb, I'm getting a reputation for being an excellent cook. The baby back ribs are to die for. Last night I made cold soba noodles, chopped tofu with parsley and Gateau Benoit. It's tough to cook something special for those vegetarians-these people will be back-well they are family after all. Try the hostess style cupcakes. Yum yum yum
