INDIANS EVERY WERE

Catty gets kidnapped by Indians,
Thomas gets sick,
Will Catty marry Snow Hunter?

In the book, Standing in the Light Catty's family respects the Indians.
They leave their doors unlocked and windows open to show the Indians
They are not afraid. But one night the Indians swoop throw the window
And kidnap Catty and Thomas.

My favorite part is when Catty's Indian Grandmother tells her
Indian mother that Catty and snow hunter are probley going to get
Married. I like this part because it is sweet and unsuspecting and
Catty is so surprised

I think the authors main idea is you can go from HOME to HOME
And will always be loved.

I would recommend this because it is surprising and you won't want
To stop!!!!!

I love reading books in diary form and the "Dear America" series of books for younger readers are not only beautifully bound, but each individual story is truly engaging, transporting readers into a bygone era with its entailing adventures.

The heroines are typically young girls who find themselves in extraordinary circumstances - and having to display immense courage in trying times. "Standing in the Light" is the diary of Catharine Carey Logan, a Quaker who lived in the Delaware Valley in Pennsylvania c 1763. Her diary is an account of her experiences growing up in the valley and also about her capture by the Lenape Indians. It is a sad yet very engrossing read.

Another highlight of the book is the author's historical note on life in America during the time [1763] - there are also illustrations and drawings of Quakers and Lenape Indians engaged in their respective pursuits, and highlights the cultural differences between the two groups. In conclusion - an engaging historical read!

A great book

Standing in the Light was an excellent book. Caty and her brother Thomas are kidnapped by the Lenape on their way home from school. At first Caty feels they'll be killed but instead they return to the Lenape village where she and her brother are separated and giving to two new families. This was the first time I'd ever heard of the Lenape and the author painted a vivid picture of what these Native Americans were like. I loved the transformation as Caty goes from fearing her captives, to loving them especially one in particular Snow Hunter.

Becky Higgins is a wealth of ideas for scrappers, and this book is just the thing I need when I'm trying to put together a layout. In the world of scrapbooking, trends come and go, but because these ideas are based onkey graphic design concepts (and all of Becky's stuff is like this)they can easily transfer over to new styles and techniques. If you are an experienced scrapper, then you've probably seen a lot of this stuff before and would benefit from getting her newest book, "Best of Becky Higgins Sketches." But I consider this book indispensable!

A Beloved Classic and It Still Works

I bought this book 5 years ago, and I still use it. This book, and all of Becky's sketch books, give you ideas for pages not reliant upon products, designs, or themes. I simply look for a page layout based on how many photos I have and their orientation. Turn the book 90 degrees and you have more options. Turn it upside down for even more options. Have an empty space to fill with an accent? Check out that section. Wondering how to emphasize your focal point photo? Look at frames.

The best thing about this book is that the sketches do not rely upon the more modern trend of oddly sized photos. All the photos in this book are 4 x 6 or thereabouts. No PhotoShop skills or computer equipment is necessary!

Absolutely worth every penny.

My favorite part about this book is that it isn't just a bunch of pages other people have created that you then get caught up in the photos and stories, forgetting why you originally went looking. For years, I'd gotten the scrap magazines, which, while beautiful and ususally inspiring, did not always help me. I usually thought I had to find a book with exactly the theme I was working on. The good news is that you don't, and this book has mock-ups of layouts, borders, etc. that are easily adaptable to any book you're working on. I think the only downside might be that there are so many new techniques that have come out in the five years since it was published, that it may not cover as much as some might like. Having said that, I'm willing to bet the #2 that just came out will pick those up perfectly! From my perspective, buying either book (or even both!) would be a good investment for anyone who's found themselves stuck creatively!

the fact that this is another black animal attacking white people. Do you not feel hatred for this beast? I read about crap like this happening every day and i am sick of it, arent you people? When are you going to wake up and quit allowing the media to make these oh so common attacks seen like no big deal when if the perpetrator was white the WHOLE WORLD WOULD KNOW about it.

This country is sick and its because of all of the yellow bellied white people who are too cowardly to do anything about these animals.

Excuse me i need to go vomit.

I have read mixed reviews for this book, so decided to read for myself to get an opinion. This was a well written book that seems to really get to the facts of what happened and portrays the very seriousness of this attack and the process of recovery. Debra Puglisi Sharp is an extremely strong woman who in writing this book will certainly help to aid in providing stength to others who have been through similar situations. Kudos to Debra for having the strength not only to survive this attack but to write her account of the attack and recovery to help others.

Shattered is a gripping story about the day that Debra Puglisi's life changed forever. While out planting her new roe bushes, Donald Flagg sneaks into her house, shoots her husband and rapes Debra. He then kidnaps her and keeps her for 5 days while her children and family are questioned as to the stability of their home and the possibility that their mother killed their father. During those 5 days, Debra is beaten, raped and left to believe that she will die eventually. After 5 days she manages to get free of her ropes that bind her and call 911 for help. That is the beginning of a long road to recovery. This is an amazing tale of strength and courage against all odds of an everyday woman. A very inspiring story and one that I believe every person that has been the victim of violence should read.

I've read this many, many times...and each time, I appreciate it more and more!

I remember the very first time I read Shattered...I could not stop crying as I read. I cried for the loss of Nino, for Michael and Melissa, for Debbie and the rest of her family...I cried tears of genuine sadness, grief, and longing; I cried tears of hope and renewal. This book is very well-written, in very much the same style as if you sat down and talked to Debbie, or attended one of her many speaking engagements...

I believe this is a must-read for all victims of sexual abuse and/or assault, however, it will trigger thoughts and feelings you believed you dealt with--it did for me. By no means let that stop you, though...

I have read this book many, many times since then, and each time I thanked God for my dear friend Debbie Sharp and the courage He blessed her with.

When I moved to NJ I joined a newcomers' club and offered to help run a Daytrips group. This book(including its various future editions)was our constant companion and ever ready reference. It also worked for the many house guests that suddenly appeared now that we lived near NYC. We had a great time visiting many of the sites Barbara had previewed for us...and her observations were right on. Note: She does advise that you check dates and time as these change.

When I moved to GA I brought it with me and I often lend it to friends and friends of friends planning to visit NYC or "The Garden State". They are always delighted and wonder why we don't have such a resource for GA.

Still the best!

The 9th edition (which is being shown on the screen right now as of November 17), is still the best guidebook to NJ around. Published in 2000, it is more up-to-date than many others, and still shows plenty of personal opinions as well as the basic facts. Available mostly thru "used-like new" option on Amazon because the publisher is out of stock of new copies, but has plenty of books that were a tiny-bit bent when shipped in cartons or shipped back from stores that went out of business.

Those of you looking for the latest edition of New Jersey Day Trips may be having a hard time, thanks to Amazon's crazy automatic system. They presently have an older edition on the top line, with no indication of what edition it is. If you want to buy a "used, like new" copy of the 9th edition, type in the ASIN number in the little rectangular box on the amazon front page. That will take you to the correct 9th edition. The number is 0960776281. The 9th edition was published in 2000 and is the most recent. The 10th edition will not be out until spring, 2004.
Thanks, Barbara Hudgins, author.

Although the 8th edition is a great book, it was published in 1998. The most recent edition available at this time (10/2003) is the 9th edition published in 2000. It's ASIN number is 0960776281. That is about the only way to get to it since Amazon.com refuses to put up the 9th edition first on the page although I have asked them to many times. You can buy "used-like new" that are actually new, unread copies that have come back from bookstores as returns, or had slightly dented covers are were never sent out. Thanks a lot, Barbara Hudgins

Mary Shafer's "Devastation on the Delaware" is an engrossing account of the tragic Delaware Valley flood of 1955, created by Hurricanes Connie and Diane. Told as a narrative timeline of events, this book introduces us to the people and communities overcome by the wrathful waters of the Delaware and its tributaries. It reads like historical fiction rather than documentary, with many amazing and touching stories uncovered by the author's interviewing diligence. I couldn't put this book down and highly recommend it as a full and varied account of an unbelievable event and its effect on the Delaware Valley.

An Amazing Account of the '55 Flood

Review Date: 2008-05-18
Mary Shafer's book Devastation on the Delaware is the amazing result of years of research and emotional commitment. Written to commemorate the August, 1955, Delaware River Valley Flood, the book takes the reader on a "roller-coaster ride" through those days of death and "devastation." Ms. Shafer describes in detail the Flood as experienced in all the areas of the Delaware Valley during August 18-20.

Her professional commitment to her "craft" and her personal commitment to the survivors and victims of the Flood are extraordinary. The survivors' stories (remembered in minute detail 50 years later) are heart-wrenching. The graphic details are horrifying.

The author is an exceptional writer, one who weaves historical and scientific facts into a compelling "story." The fascinating history of the Delaware River and its tributaries, general information about hurricanes (and Hurricanes Connie and Diane in particular) and the status of weather reporting in the mid-1950's and the abandoned plans to dam the River after the Flood all become part of the drama of one of our country's worst natural disasters. This book will hold everyone's interest. It is a great "read."

For those of us who lived through the Flood, it is also a priceless gift. Many people waited over 50 years for the kind of closure only Ms. Shafer's book has given them.

Shafer's book is an exceptional read.

Mary Shafer has approached a detailed account of a tragic flood with unusual thoroughness, compassion, continuity, and research. It is a non-fiction book like no other, holding the reader spellbound throughout. One cannot help but become emotionally involved with those who suffered through this event, and one cannot help but admire Shafer for her accomplishment. Obviously, Shafer was passionate about her subject; it shows in throughout this book.

Although I was born after the flood, I visited all the high-water markers in my hometown in the Pocono Mountains and listened intently to the haunting stories told by teachers, neighbors, and family friends. I believe the author of this book has done a marvelous job recounting the days and hours leading up to the region's greatest disastser, mostly through the eyes of those who witnessed the terrible events of August 1955.

I've passed this book around Newark Delaware. The Deer Park and East End crowds start reading it and wont put it down. They're laughing and remembering details about dorms or college life that they haven't thought about in years. Anyone who's into the music scene just gets around town will also be surprised how many details are in there that they've forgotten.

The book also does a lot to clear up rumors and truths about the music scene, the history of Newark's biggest community concert "Wilburfest", and the politics and the resourcefulness of students to keep their music festivals alive.

It's rare that a book like this comes out. For a twenty year period; all the hard work of the local musicians, all the good times of so many students, overcoming the obstacles of college living, and just plain growing up is celebrated here.

This book is endorsed by SkidFest - need I say anything more.

... this book might resonate particularly well; it could become one of your basic books. If your birthdate isn't in that range, read it anyway because it's a wonderful book. This is a beautiful novel about complex people caught in the overwhelming cross currents of the late '60s. The author's created a complete world, with every character compelling. The writing is down-to-earth and the story flows as naturally as the river. The book has stayed with me; I remember the characters so fondly, as if I knew them. I really didn't want the book to end.

This is a fun and engaging book, and an easy, quick, and suspenseful read. The author is an exceptionally gifted writer and good storyteller, who I think does an excellent job of capturing one of the most unforgettable moments in recent time...the late 60's. It is nostalgic without being overly sentimental, and I found the characters to be "real" people with universal qualities that are instantly appealing. The setting takes place in a small rural town, and I especially enjoyed the author's very lush descriptions of the natural beauty of the area, and how he wove this aspect of the story into the overall plot. Anyone who is a sucker for a "first love", coming-of-age story, but perhaps seeking a fresh approach, should read this book.

I was there! Not really, but I feel like I was. The author's feel for this era transported me from dusty West Texas to the foggy, wet Delaware River Valley. I was a little older than Nick, the main character in the book when Woodstock happened, but whispers of it ran through our tight-knit farming community like wind through the corn tassles. We wanted to be there. So the first week in August, 1969, 3 of my friends and I convinced a long-haul trucker to take us "east"! We ended up near New York City, hot, hungry and dirty with no earthly idea how to get to "Woodstock." But the freaks knew. They pointed us north, and with thumbs out, battered cowboy hats and boots and dirty bandannas, we headed for our life-changing experience.
Read this book, Buy this book, love this book, share it with everyone you know over 48! We were ALL there in spirit. We all wanted "out"! We all wanted "in"! We none of us wanted to go to Vietnam but I did. And I took memories of Woodstock with me. Now with this book, the memories of how free and easy it was back then, when all we had to decide was what to eat for supper, where to go dancin' and who to sidle up to was foremost in our innocent minds.
Thank you Joseph Freda, for putting it all into focus for me and for taking me back to a better time and place.-Scott Johnson

It's been a while since I've read a book that I've so thoroughly enjoyed. Mr. Freda gives us a real river cruise as he extends the metaphor beautifully. His style of writing is lucid, striking, to the point, and certainly no nonsense.

Certainly, this is a "coming of age" story and rather brilliantly done. I understand the author is a product of the Defense Department's overseas schools (he graduated from Kubasaki High School in Okinawa in the late '60s). I happened to be a young marine stationed on Okinawa at the time, personally nervous about Viet Nam (as most of us were) and when I picked up "Patience of Rivers" I felt the author had more than represented an era, of course. His book transcends a single concept. This is Mr. Freda's second novel (I've also read his "Suburban Guerillas" and it's also great!) and I can hardly wait for the next one.

Must rate this volume as the standard reference on the topic. This current edition supplants Ripley's "Artillery and Ammunition of the Civil War." I actually own copies of the original and revised editions. There are a few notable updates, making the second purchase worth the expenditure. While I have found some minor omissions in the listings (particularly discussing some of the poorly documented Confederate gun makers), the authors seem to leave few stones unturned.

Review Date: 2007-02-22
"Field Artillery Weapons of the Civil War" is the definitive reference work for civil war cannon used in the field. Nothing else approaches its structured grouping and organization of the diverse and confused world of American Civil War field guns. However, this is not a book for everyone since it is quite focused on the specifications, manufacturing origins and methods of the tubes themselves, not on the tactical employment, range charts, the batteries, or the projectiles they fired. (Understandably, many readers will be shocked if they don't realize this before purchase--including me!)

It is hard to over emphasize what a fine job the authors have done in bringing order out of chaos. Their encyclopedic inclusion and explanation of all known types solves many riddles. The complexity and nuances will still require considerable study by the reader to reach a full understanding, but at last it is logically and rigorously catalogued.

The chapter list is as follows: 1. Fundamentals. 2. Federal 6-pounder Guns and 3.67" Rifles. 3. Confederate 6-pounder Guns and 3-inch Rifles. 4. Federal 12-pounder Field Howitzers. 5. Confederate 12-pounder Field Howitzers. 6. Federal Napoleon Guns. 7. Confederate Napoleon Guns. 8. Parrott Rifles. 9. 3-inch Ordnance Rifles. 10. False Napoleons and Gettysburg Replicas. 11. The Small Ones. 12. Boat Howitzers. 13. James Smoothbores and Rifles. 14. The Rare Ones. 15. Too Big for the Field. 16. British Rifled Cannon. 17. Carriages. 18. Conclusions.

The chapters are well illustrated with photographs and schematics of the gun tubes. There are also detailed dimensional specification tables, and some estimated production counts of various types. Following the main text is an extensive set of appendices that serve as a catalog of known foundries, inspectors, designations, foundry numbers, weights, and locations of known survivors,

I highly recommend this work to anyone who wants to be able to identify nearly any Civil War field gun he/she comes across. However, I don't recommend it as a detailed work on the employment of Civil War field artillery--that is not the objective or nature of the book.

Note: The companion work for the heavy artillery is "The Big Guns. Civil War Siege, Seacoast, and Naval Cannon" by Edwin Olmstead, Wayne E. Stark, and Spencer C. Tucker. It follows the same format and style, but its availability is limited.

A comprehensive source of information on the field guns used by both sides of the american civil war. Provides each weapon's history and statistics. Extremely informative.

No civil war library should be without it.

An excellent companion to other book The Big Guns by Omstead and Wayne E. Stark and Spencer C. Tucker which covers the big guns of the conflict.

I saw this in the grocery store, and had to look twice. Kay Cornelius was the name of my seventh grade English teacher, who was also my best middle school friend's mother. After reading the author's bio, I realized it IS my English teacher from good ol' Ed White Middle in Huntsville, AL. I just couldn't wrap my mind around the idea of my quiet, demure teacher writing passionate romance, but she sure does a great job! I had a hard time putting this book down, and was still reading at midnight when my husband finally just turned out the lamp on me. It's a good read, and I can't wait to read more of her books! Great Work, Mrs. Cornelius! I give you an A+! --Kathy Reed

Twin Willows: This is a deliciously sensual book, with a pair of gutsy, charming heroines. I particularly enjoyed the way the writer evoked the period, bringing it to life while she kept the action moving right along. A great read; I highly recommend it. Elaine McCarthy

We get a wonderfully clear picture of the country of Pennsylvania and O-Hio territory.
Silverwillow was a beautiful Delaware raised by Bear's Daughter.
I couldn't decide if Bear's Daughter was guilty of love or subject to a superstition of twins. But after we meet White Eagel we learn of Shawnee triplets. Of course they were male.

Anna Willow McKnight is approaching [possibly 18 years] graduation from Miss Martin's School where she has met and fallen in love with Stuart Martin, a sometimes teacher and tutor who is going to Princeton. Miss Martin, Stuart's aunt, was quite a character and prejudist against "breeds".

In the meantime "Willow", being raised in Chief Black Snake's tribe by Bear's Daughter, kin to Black Snake is trying very hard not to be claimed by Otter as his wife. The Shawnee warrior, Otter is determined to press his suit and so Bear's Daughter gains permission to take Willow away to look for her Delaware family.

Anna Willow has left Miss Martin's school and dropped in on her father's sisters' sons only to find deceit and no welcome. She determines to find her father in Ken-tuck-e. What a very neat descriptive trip. But what a shock when she finds that Ian McKnight has taken a wife, Rebecca.

Once again we hear of the treacherous renegade, Simon Girty [I first heard of him from Zane Grey's stories]and the Red Coats who were stirring up the Indians.

White Eagle has saved Willow when Bear's Daughter dies and he takes her for his wife. In the meantime, Otter has joined in on the raid at Bryan's Station and abducted Ann Willow, thinking that she is "Willow". Whoops! Ian captures Willow thinking he is saving Anna Willow and takes her back to Rebecca. And so the story goes.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED - you will definitely enjoy the way the story unfolds and the connections with the Indians.

Excellent reading, difficult to put down, totally enjoyable

The opening chapter was enough to tell me I was in for a wonderful adventure, and a wonderful adventure it was. From the beginning to the very end Kay's style of writing brings the characters and events to life. I look forward to reading more of her books.

This is an incredibly well-written book that is nearly impossible to put down. The author magically transports you through time and makes you truly feel you are a part of that time and place (which is a trick when you live in the desert). I am very glad this is part of a series. I can't wait to read more from this talented author.

You won't want to put this down!

Wow,this was a great book. I'm eagerly waiting the next in the series. Marlo crafted a fantastic story interweaving history and religion into a powerful prose. I could not put the book down. Her artistry reminds me of Mitchner. I enjoyed this so much I bought another and donated it to the library. ~ Hurry up with the next book!!

Incredible! And I don't use that term lightly....

What can I say about this book? It's so awesome...I almost can't describe it. When I started reading it in the beginning, I wasn't too excited. I thought it was going to be another one of those pointless "Christian" romance novels where the girl believes in God but never even thinks about Him until the very end when she's got the guy, who she managed somehow to convert, and then they both sappily thank God. But this was so different. The love story, while still there, melted into the background of Kwelik's extreme faith. I also love the fact that she doesn't do Christian platitudes...like,"Oh yeah, I'm going through all this horrible stuff, but the Lord will take care of it" Don't get me wrong, the Lord does get you through unimaginable things, but in the mean time, it still hurts. You can really feel Kwelik's agony and torment, but she still trusts in God. I also love the part about White Wolf. It really shows just how much bitterness and unforgiveness can completely change who you are inside, until you're someone no one can recognize. This book is fantastic!

I really enjoyed Cry Freedom. I do not have much time to read but once I started this great book I couldn't put it down. I was instantly drawn to the characters and the excitement of the story. I appreciate the authors ability to bring the past to life with such historical accuracy. I CAN'T WAIT FOR THE NEXT BOOK IN THE SERIES!

Schalesky writes with such powerful prose that the reader not only believes the story, we are swept back in time to the early 1700's to experience it. What is the cry for freedom in a land that we today take for granted? What is the cry for freedom that every person feels within their life on a spiritual level? Schalesky weaves these questions into a story of historical accuracy and with characters who live and breath upon the page. As both a historical fiction and contemporary fiction reader, I will definitely return to Schalesky's books again and again. A reminder of our nation's foundation and with insights that touch us today -- a definite must read!
