My first Dostoyevsky work, and the best I've read so far. Do not miss it! I was lucky enough to get this book as a gift from a relative in Belarus. The translation captures Dostoyevsky exctremely well. In simplistic terms, this is a "love story," Dostoyevsky style. That discription does not do it justice, though. Do not be turned off, this is NOT Danielle Steele or some other WalMart romance brand. The emotion is subtle, but gripping. The characters are such that a reader will relate to this story intimately. You will not be able to tear yourself away from this tale of human weakness as it appears on so many levels and in such provoking form. A must have for a fan of great Russian literature.

Hard to find, but worth the trouble.

Fans of Fyodor Mikailovich, don't miss this one! A jewel of a story which gripped me from the first page, with the death of the old man's dog, to the last, with (read it and see).

Little Nellie, a relatively minor character, could fill a whole book by herself. Other characters are familiar, but even better (if possible) versions of those from his more widely-read works. The Aloysha/Myshkin character, vivid and true-to-life, shows the destructive side of innocence in a way that his dopplegangers have not. Every person in this story is so real I felt I already knew them all.

The story involves irresistable passion, unbearable sorrow, gentle love unswayed by ruinous insult, and the impossibility and inevitability of forgiveness. Multiple conflicting emotions battle it out in every breast. I have read this book at least five times. I can't recommend it enough.

Comprehensive compilation

Review Date: 2000-05-04
This book, though having a publication year of 1980, is still absolutely the best compilation of information about invertebrate animals that are found along the California coast. Many of the animals included in the book have geographic ranges that extend well to the north and the south of California, so this book is useful to anyone who lives, visits, or works along the west coast of North America.

This is not a book of taxonomic keys, like Light's Manual. It is, rather, a book that provides a summary of the biology and ecology of invertebrates of the west coast. The authors provide lists of the best research literature for each animal (up through 1980), as well as photographs and line drawings that show what the animals look like.

This is not a field book, per se, but copies of this book are found on the shelves of most marine biological laboratories in the world, and on the shelves of most invertebrate zoologists who have visited the west coast of the USA.

A professor of mine once said, "That is a 'big boy' book." And, as books on invertebrates go, he is right.

This book is well worth the price!

This book has very nice color pictures of the animals. It is not just a reference book. It has more detail about the Invertebrates (distinctive characters, range, habitat, life history, interactions with other species, economic importance ...etc.) It really fulfills the curiosity of the person who is interested in the marine invertebrates.

The picture of the invertebrates are amazing along with the through explanation of them. If you are a person who wants to know about marine life, you will love this book.

While this book works wonderfully as a travel guide for your visit to California's Salinas, Carmel and the Monterey Peninsula, it is equally enjoyable when you read it from the comfort of your armchair at home. The vivid pictures, poetic descriptions and interesting sidebars help Steinbeck's California come alive to diehard Steinbeck fans and the uninitiated alike. Beware though, because after reading Shillinglaw's book, you'll want to read all those Steinbeck books you missed in high school and college.

Last weekend our family had a great time on vacation in Monterey. Following Steinbeck's story as it intertwined with places and people in Monterey made my walks around town alive with history. We spent part of a day in Pacific Grove and loved looking at pictures of the past incarnation of present buildings and sites. Definitely added a rich dimension to our trip.

Wonderful biography -- with an emphasis on place

I bought this book for my folks--who were planning a visit through California--and ended up reading it myself. I've been to the Steinbeck Institute (and loved it) in Salinas, but this book has a broader scope and takes you to the places in California where Steinbeck grew up and lived, as well as the places that appear in his books. I heartily recommend it for any Steinbeck fan.

Here is a thinking person's story of terror, resolve, fatigue, death, and redemption - of the vicissitudes of war. No overblown theatrics diminish the drama of Mr. Veatch's experiences. Instead, in a most tender manner, the solder's story unfolds with increasing excitement at each new war venue. This book's beauty are the descriptions of a young soldier's medley of experiences, any one of which was life threatening. This book well illustrates the wondrous nature of the American soldier.

Nine-year-old Kaya and her family have traveled to the Big River to trade and visit with other tribes. While there, Kaya meets another girl her age, Spotted Owl, who is one of the River People. When Kaya looses a race against Spotted Owl, she becomes jealous of her. Her jealousy becomes even worse when Speaking Rain, Kaya's adopted sister, begins to spend time with Spotted Owl. However, Kaya must overcome her jealousy to work together with Spotted Owl during a crisis.

This was a nice short story that fans of American Girls books, particularly those who especially enjoyed the Kaya books, are sure to enjoy. It is historically accurate about what life was like for a young Nez Perce girl in 1764, and has beautiful illustrations and a nice message for young girls.

Another excellent Kaya story

This is another in the American Girls Short Stories series about Kaya'aton'my', a nine-year-old Native-American girl growing up among the Nez Perce people in 1764. In this book, when Kaya losses a footrace against a girl from another tribe, she becomes jealous; but things go from bad to worse when it turns out that this same girl has become friends with Kaya's sister, Speaking Rain. Eventually, though, Kaya realizes that her jealousy has gone too far, and when a crisis hits, Kaya learns that there is much to be gained by working together.

This is another excellent American Girl story. My twelve-year-old daughter is a great fan of Kaya, and I must admit that I like the stories as well. I like the lesson that Kaya learns in this story, plus I like the story and illustrations for themselves. This is a very good book, one that my daughter and I both highly recommend.

Lots of good trips, lots of tips about timing your trip with the tides for a more enjoyable and safe trip. Good list of saftey tips. No book is a subsitute for experience but with this on you are less likely to get into trouble. The Puget Sound region has a lot of good open water kayaking and this book covers a lot of that ground.

This is the essential guidebook for paddling around the Puget Sound regions. It is one of those books that keeps getting updated every few years, so it is never too far out of date, which is important in our changing world. The marine environment doesn't change much, but access and facilities required to get and stay there do, and this book helps a lot with that.

This is a great book for the day paddler or the committed water traveler, since it rates the difficulty of each trip, lists places to camp and gives clear directions to launch and recovery points. It covers all the inland waters of the Puget Sound at some level of detail. Maps are a key feature of a book like this, and theirs are excellent. If you paddle the Sound, this book belongs in your truck.

Residents of the San Francisco Bay Area will welcome Kids' Adventures Around San Francisco Bay: Educational Places To Go, Things To Do, And Classes To Take In The North Bay, Peninsula, Silicon Valley, East Bay, And Santa Cruz, a book packed with ideas for visits and repeat visits to Bay Area attractions which are kid-friendly. These attributes plus an attention to budget-minded trips makes this a much more accessible travel guide for the entire family.

I bought a couple of books on this topic from amazon and this is my favorite. It is categorized by type of activity, not geographical location. If I feel like going to a zoo and what to know what's available, I just turn to Animal Kingdom and see all the zoos in the bay area. With other books I bought, I would have to look through peninsula, south bay, east bay, and such to find the activities I wanted. This book also lists seasonal events, classes to take, and a list of free activities. This book is my new bible for spending time with my daughter.

A pioneering Russian aeronautical theorist and writer, he is the father of the Soviet space program. He built the first wind tunnel and solved fundamental problems about space travel, such as use of liquid rocket fuel, long before such activity was feasible. Although he was unappreciated in his lifetime, Sputnik's launch was made to coincide with his centennial.

Tsiolkovsky was a bold innovator and inventor

Konstantin Tsiolkovsky died on September 19, 1935 at the age of 78. His works and his ideas have become the scientific basis of the modern theory of jet propulsion. He foresaw the significance of jet propulsion and the conquest of the stratosphere, of flights at supersonic speeds.

A museum has been opened in Kaluga in the house where Tsiolkovsky died. The exhibits are mechanical devices and models which he made with his own hands. The scientist's manuscripts and copies of his published works are exhibited in glass showcases.

Konstantin Tsiolkovsky's tombstone bears the following prophetic words inscribed under the bas-relief of a rocket: "Mankind will not remain on the earth forever, but, in search of light and space, will at first timidly penetrate beyond the limits of the atmosphere and then finally conquer the spaces of the solar system."

Tsiolkovsky - The Father of Soviet Rocketry.

This planet is the cradle of human mind, but one cannot spend all one's life in a cradle.
- Konstantin Tsiolkovsky.

_Konstantin Tsiolkovsky: His Life and Work_ by A. Kosmodemyanksky is the biography of Russian rocket pioneer Konstantin Tsiolkovsky. Tsiolkovsky's work included research into the mechanics of the all metal dirigible, designs for an aeroplane and wind tunnel, as well as the theory of rocketry. Tsiolkovsky also wrote on interplanetary travel as well as writing some science fiction and philosophical works. From an early age Tsiolkovsky showed an interest in mathematics, physics, and natural science; however, he was hampered by various difficulties including near deafness which overcame him after a bout of scarlet fever. Tsiolkovsky began his researches in the theory of the all metal dirigible. However, his work was not recognized or funded sufficiently in tsarist Russia. Later, when the Soviets came to power Tsiolkovsky became recognized for his work in rocketry. Tsiolkovsky believed that man would conquer space and his writing proved prophetic in that he suggested rockets would be used to achieve interplanetary travel. Tsiolkovsky offered several distinct designs for rockets and studied the chemistry necessary to understand their fuel requirements. He also derived an equation which showed the velocity necessary to escape the earth's gravitational field. He was regarded by many as a dreamer and utopian for his ideas on interplanetary travel and the future of the human race. His work continues to be important today and his theories have proven prescient to our modern continuing discovery of space. This book provides an excellent introduction to his scientific and mechanical thought as it pertains to rocketry.

There are other charming books written about the jewel-by-the-sea, La Jolla, but this one adds a special touch that enhances our beautiful resort with fascinating facts from the past. Famous names such as Irving J. Gill, the architect, Ellen Browning Scripps, Charles and Anne Lindbergh, Gregory Peck, and Cliff Robertson, to name a few.

The world renowned Scripps Institute of Oceanography with its pioneers, such as Roger Revelle, is one of the many outstanding features and facts of a well written record of our paradise-on-earth village.

Though not a native of La Jolla, I have visited it since 1938. I moved my residence here in 1985.

I have sent this book to family and friends out of town who have also become intrigued with this Town with the Funny Name.

Indeed, anyone, anywhere, interested in history and the arts will open a book filled with them.

My husband is very impressed with Patricia Daly-Lipe's book, so much so that I haven't had a chance to read it yet. He has read a number of books about our home town of La Jolla and found this one to be truly superior to the typical tourist offering. The overall quality of the book is demonstrated by the breadth of the topics covered coupled with the knowledgable glimpses of La Jolla offered by several resident authors.
