Palestinian Cinema: Landscape, Trauma, and Memory is a one-of-a-kind collaboration between an Israeli scholar and a Palestinian scholar tracing the development of Palestinian cinema, with especial attention paid to its response to political and social evolutions. Chapters reveal that the worse social, political, and economic positions become, the more Palestinian cinema intertwines itself with the national struggle. Palestinian cinema creates its national narrative against the Israeli narrative, and the bitter reflection between the two viewpoints sadly echoes the greater resentment and hostility between the two peoples sharing the same territory. In particular, the films of Michel Khleifi, Rashid Masharawi, Ali Nassar, and Elia Suleiman are discussed, as well as roadblock movies in general. "To a large extent, the new directors have joined forces to protect Palestinian unity and identity in the face of the threat of extinction. Thus, they express, even more intensely than their predecessors did, the strengthening national consciousness and identity vying with familial, regional, pan-Arabic, class, or gender identities. In their films, they strive to construct a single national unity, which is strong and secured, by integrating different sections, groups, minorities, and political stances." A 'must-read' for anyone with an interest in Palestinian cinema and what it has to tell us about the culture from which it comes.

I can't read enough about the Pennsy and generally enjoy most books about the railroad. This book gives a good overview of how the PRR came together in Indiana in the early days and how it came apart at the end. I was very entertained by this book and learned a lot about the operations in this state.

Masterpiece by Chinese "Shakespeare"
Helpful Votes: 7 out of 7 total.
Review Date: 2005-07-31
This play was written the same year (1598) Shakespeare wrote "Henry IV, Part II" & "Much Ado About Nothing." IMHO it's comparable - so it's very, very good indeed. It combines a highly poetic love story with the drama of war & considerable comedy. The translation & footnotes make it more accessible than most of Shakespeare, while providing considerable insight into medieval Chinese literature, legend, poetry, & customs. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it & would love to see it performed. Of course, it's not for everyone, but if you like Shakespeare, Marlowe, et al, give this one a try. You might like it even better.

The Future of Feminism Is Now

Review Date: 2003-03-13
If you want to see where feminism is headed, this is the book to buy. Bold, critical, well-researched, and timely, Yuracko's challenge to contemporary feminists must be taken seriously. This is not a work that shies away from controversy or seeks refuge in abstraction or rhetoric. You may not agree with everything Yuracko says, but she makes a clear and convincing case for the open discussion of values among feminists.

the best analysis out there
Helpful Votes: 8 out of 8 total.
Review Date: 2002-03-18
I've read most of the books about Dylan out there - this one's the best. Bowden argues that dylan's lyrics cannot be thoughtfully analyzed without also considering the music and the performance - thus the title, "Performed Literature". Bowden's writing is clear, forceful, and engaging. She uses many examples to back up her points. Bowden is an academic, so there is fair amount of jargon thrown in, and part of the book does drag a bit, but all in all, this book is a must read for the serious dylan fan. (by the way, this is not a biography, so don't expect anything of that nature)

American Command in World War I
Helpful Votes: 7 out of 8 total.
Review Date: 2007-02-12
It appears of late that there is an increasing interest in books about World War I. Books have appeared on individual battles and on specialized equipment such as tanks and aircraft. After all, this was the time when much of the foundation for the later wars was being derived.

This particular book by Donald Smythe covers Pershing during the World War I years. (Smythe covers Gen. Pershing's earlier life in the previous book: Guerrilla Warror.) This book was written in the late 1980's, and just reprinted now.During this time Pershing had to build the army and assuage the commanders of the British and French forces who wanted the Americans to come into their armies as replacment soldiers under British or French commanders.

This was the first time that a large army would be sent by the Americans to fight on land beyond the oceans. The Americans had a lot to learn on the battlefield and in the conference room, but learn it they did. And they applied this learning in another European was a generation later.

As a measure of the tribute to be paid to Pershing, when he died in 1948, the funeral procession was led by sixteen American generals marching in the rain. At the head of the generals were Eisenhower and Bradley.

Kantbuch before the fact
Helpful Votes: 14 out of 30 total.
Review Date: 2000-06-22
A lecture course that eventually became the famous Kantbuch, Heidegger demonstrates his remarkable capacity to think in complete sentences. The reading of Kant is decidedly Aristotlizing, with the priority of the imagination (phantasia) over reason (nous) or sense (aisthesis), and the priority of imagination cannot be separated from the priority of time, the gift which is self giving (or in Kant, self-affection: masturbation). The most clever thing that H does, and which he refrains from in the Kantbuch, is to turn the categories (quantity, quality, modality, and something else) into emanations of past, present, future. H reads modern philosophy as the triumph of the imagination, and that is no clearer than in Kant, but for Heidegger, the future possesses a priority, and the future is "image-poor." The connection of imagination with manipulation (and potentiality) leads some (like Sartre) to identify imagination with negativity, but H wants no part of this "humanism." Imagination and time may possess a priority that Kant "recoils" from, but H demonstrates the reductio in Kant's argument not to valorize imagination but ironically to resuscitate aisthesis, or the potentia passiva, the ability or power to receive, to listen intently, or just to listen.

Phenomenology and Mysticism: The Verticality of Religious Experience (Indiana Series in the Philosophy of Religion)

An excellent phenomenological study...
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2008-02-01
Steinbock is author of _Home and Beyond: Generative Phenomenology after Husserl_ (Northwestern University Press, 1995), translator of Edmund Husserl's _Analyses Concerning Passive and Active Synthesis_ (Kluwer Academic Publishers, 2001) and professor of philosophy at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. Here he concerns himself with carefully describing one mode of "givenness" that is different from the ways in which objects are "presented" in human experience: epiphany. He successfully traces the "verticality" of experience that gives or yields an experience as "religious." Additionally, Steinbock critically analyzes the obverse of epiphany -- idolatry. Utilizing descriptions of three mystics from the Abrahamic religious traditions, Steinbock thoroughly investigates the problem of evidence. _Phenomenology and Mysticism_ represents the first of a planned trilogy of books, each devoted to a particular mode of vertical experience. The other two volumes are analyses of moral and ecological experience, respectively, investigating the modes of givenness of revelation/manifestation and disclosure/display. In this impressive project, Steinbock embarks on a full explication of three central dimensions of human experience, and in doing so, takes up and embodies the phenomenological project envisioned by Edmund Husserl. I highly recommend this text to professors, scholars, and advanced students in phenomenology, philosophy of religion, and religious studies.

Most Esoteric Heavy Book Of Alltime

What can you say about one of the greatest thinkers of alltime who inspired other greatest thinkers of alltime? Well, one could say that this book - which often isn't even listed as a work of his on certain lists (see wikipedia) is his very very best. By far the most insightful book ever written about how consciousness interacts with the reality of space-time. His thought provoking ideas into intentionalities and replaying memories is nothing short of amazing. The appendix to this book will take you a decade to absorb. Incredible thoughts for the late 1800's and early 1900's.
