Beginning with an informed and informative introduction to the subject, the co-authors, William and Edith Overlease, provide a 202-page compilation of 'Common Indiana Weeds' and their distribution within the state. A 46-page descriptive presentation of Rare and Uncommon Weeds and their distribution concludes this seminal treatise, along with an extended Index. An impressive work of impeccably methodical scholarship, "100 Years Of Change In The Distribution Of Common Indiana Weeds" is accompanied by a CD allowing for easy reproduction of the various charts and lists. A very highly recommended addition to academic library Environmental Studies reference collections, "100 Years Of Change In The Distribution Of Common Indiana Weeds" could well serve as a template for similar studies in all of the other American states and Canadian provinces.

Bower's clean, sharply-focused photographs capture architectural features of older Indiana, Midwest buildings. Among these are window frames, stairways and bannisters, stain-glass and decorative windows, floral and animal ornaments, floor boarding, friezes, cupolas, and weathervanes, among other features. There's also a few photos of railroad bridges, cranes, and old, wooden amusement-park rides. The 200 photos with their duotone shading have a nostalgic tone. Most of the buildings are still in use. Some clearly have been long abandoned and are in the last stages of their survival. Though it is time, not the wrecker's ball, that will bring them down. For these and others that will likely be abandoned before too long, Bower's photographs are a record of the styles and details of a late 1800's/early 1900's country and small-town architecture of the American Midwest.

This book fits its purpose well. Interesting vignettes into the quirks of old homes ad their owners. Rich photography of homes actually lived in by families. If you don't expect too much you won't be disappointed.

This story is very small but also very touching. It provides a good lesson in helping people and animals and in priorities. I really look forward to reading this book to my class.

Harold Holzer is co[-chairman of the Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Commission and an acknowledged authority on Abraham Lincoln and the political culture of the Civil War era. Also very highly recommended are Harold Holzer's other works on Abraham Lincoln: "The Lincoln Image"; "Lincoln Seen and Heard"; "Dear Mr. Lincoln"; "The Lincoln Mailbag"; and "Lincoln at Cooper Union".

The articles in this volume give a clear picture as to where the profession of social work is heading. From global social work to the issues facing social work higher education it lays out where we have been and where we might be headed. A great read and good resource for those in the field or studying to become a social worker. Kudos! :o)
