Amazon has this listing for the rare occasion when an expensive first edition of this work comes available.

If you're simply interested in reading the content of this important 1871-72 speech, you can find an exact facsimile of the original in an inexpensive book you will find on Amazon: Free Lover: Sex, Marriage and Eugenics the Early Speeches of Victoria Woodhull, due for release in mid-December 2005. In that book, you will also get facsimiles of three of her other major speeches on free love, two letters she wrote the New York Times on the topic and the New York Times' report on this Steinway Hall speech.

In Free Lover Victoria Woodhull justified her free love ideas by advancing strange, mystical ideas about sex and childbearing that link it to eugenics. She also advocated radical social change in an effort to make free love seem more practical. Those changes included an end to legal marriage, payments to mothers for childbearing, and the rearing of all children by the State. In a very real sense, Aldous Huxley's classic Brave New World is a criticism of those ideas as they had evolved by 1932.

Woodhull later abandoned her ideas about free love and married a wealthy British banker. But she retained her interest in eugenics, becoming one of its earliest advocates. Over time, her ideas about eugenics became less mystical and more scientific. Her major speeches and pamphlets on eugenics can be found in another inexpensive collection: Lady Eugenist: Feminist Eugenics in the Speeches and Writings of Victoria Woodhull, also available from Amazon.

A western not to be missed!

Special Investigator Frank Angel rides into Liberty in pursuit of outlaw Harry Culp. Unknown to Angel, Culp has been murdered on the orders of corrupt Judge Cranford and his stolen loot appropriated. With Sheriff Sherman and his sinister deputies working for the Judge it isn't long before Angel is framed and thrown into a prison camp run by another of Cranford's sadistic henchmen. A prison from which Angel isn't to leave alive.

This is a very fast moving book full of violent action. As soon as Angel seems to be close to finding out the truth he finds himself in another brutal death struggle.

The characters are all well drawn from the scheming Judge to the nervous Sheriff, and of course, Angel, a tough lawman who will take on all odds to complete his mission.

Frank Angel originally appeared in a series of nine books back in the early 1970's and it's great to see him return in a new adventure. This tale capturing the excitement and atmosphere of those past books well.
For fans of Frank Angel this has just got to be a dream come true and for fans of good westerns then make sure you don't miss it!

Highly recommended.

In the land of the blind the one eyed man is king

Before I begin my review I want to acknowledge two debts. Firstly to the British government which introduced the idea of a system which would allow the children of lower income households to attend a Grammar School by virtue of their success at an examination at 11 years of age. Had that not been available I very much doubt that I would have ever had the access to education that I have enjoyed throughout my entire life. Secondly, I owe an intellectual debt to the Author of this book, Arthur Seldon, without who's fine editorial skills and prescient writings which have inspired me to see the world in my own way and to argue and campaign for change.

This book is a collection of shorter articles and essays written over an extensive period of years some of which predate the British Welfare State in the form that is known today and yet are remarkably accurate in their predictions of it's failings. Arthur Seldon writes not only from the intellect but also from the heart. His childhood experiences are a powerful influence on his thought and the power of the experiences come through loud and clear in his writings.

Unlike many of Britain's social reformers, Seldon was not born into a priviledged family. His first hand knowledge of loss and poverty contrasts starkly with those, then and now, who advocate economic and social reforms from a vantage point of economic and social security with little understanding of how the other half live other than the knowledge they might gain from surveys and other research tools. Seldon writes from the point of view of the common man who wants to make his own way in the world whether by working for someone else or from working for oneself. He understands the dignity and self-respect one gets from hyonest work and thrift and even from acting in concert with others mainly through the marketplace but also from a combination with others. It is this major distinction from socialists in all parties who see the solution to social and economic problems resulting from legalised theft, sorry taxation, and redistribution through the state whilst at the same time siphoning off a goodly proportion for themselves which gives Seldon the edge over those others.

In many ways this is a remarkable collection of very unpopular ideas which Arthur Seldon generated throughout his long and distinguished career. Unpopular with the trendy ideas of the middle and upper classes and it was mainly they who occupied the universities and government offices until well into the 1960s but which certainly struck a chord with the working classes throughout that time. These unpopular ideas have, in many cases, come to pass as he predicted, yet there is more still to be done.

Arthur Seldon has stood alone or with a small coterie of close friends and allies for a long number of years. He has challenged the establishment on behalf of the little man and his ingrained belief in the nature of man to be free and the desire that all men have to be their own provider and not be beholden to anyone. He has fought a mini-crusade to set people free when all around him cast their belief in the omnipotent state to solve all of society's problems. What he has said has mostly come to pass and in this volume of shorter articles and essays there is much that we can all learn to help the impreovemt of mankind

Barry Moreno has produced a masterful work on the Statue of Liberty with this title in the Images of America line. The word "Images" couldn't be more apt: every page in this compact work contains at least one pictorial nugget to draw the reader to linger there, and the text is replete with the history of the statue. Thank you, Barry, for another major and worthwhile effort to cover America's unique and most precious symbol.

This is a great book to introduce young children to the Statue of Liberty. The history of the Statue is explained in a simple and straightforward manner. The pictures are wonderful. I would recommend this book for third or fourth grade students- the vocabulary is kind of difficult. Children love this book!

In addition to its fun images, the pages of this coloring book contain some of the finest plans for the construction of the Statue of Liberty. This was helpful in constructing a model of Gustav Eiffel's armature. I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves Ms. Liberty and her history. However, the Ellis Island section is rather weak.

This is an interesting little book that gives a history of the statue, design and construction details, and problems involved with the restoration. Each chapter is written by a specialist involved with the historic project. I was interested in the restoration from a corrosion point of view, since that is something I have dealt with in the past.

Both of my boys have loved this book, written about the developement of various inventions and the inventors. My 8th grader read it as part of his 'elective' reading, and enjoyed it very much. Written from a Christ centered perspective, and designated for 6th grade curriculum, it is especially appealing to boys from 5th-9th grade. A+ rating.

This is a graphic book about the building of the statue of liberty. It is part of a series from Capstone Press for kids. I use it to help my ESOL students to learn to read English as they learn American History. It helps.

Serious researchers start here

Review Date: 2007-04-10
This is a slender pamphlet, originally published in 1964 with addenda up to 1969, consisting overall of 88 pages. It presents the author's opinion that Marilyn Monroe was sexually involved with Robert Kennedy and that he was involved in her death. It includes a copy of Marilyn's autopsy report, several bills which were sent to her estate and details on the backgrounds of some key players, including Murray and Newcomb. Most of this material has been published elsewhere since, but he includes some which subsequent writers ignore.

Capell is often dismissed as a Kennedy-hater and rabid anti-communist and it must be said that both these views come through strongly in this pamphlet. Most Monroe biographers however, although tending to be a bit sniffy about his accusations and his personal investigation, have used him as part of their research and use his findings as the basis of their own. In reality, much of what he writes has been supported by the findings of later researchers, though few of them would admit to his contribution.

Pricey, but not many of these around, so likely only to appeal to avid collectors or serious researchers.
