One would be hard pressed to imagine two more successful, accomplished and acknowledged personalities in the music world than Rostropovich and Vishnevskaya. However, few realize how eventful and extraordinary their world has been. A study of this book would be a great enrichment to any individual, regardless of whether they are followers of Rostropovich or not...

this wonderful tried and true recipe book is amazingly easly to follow, the muffins ALWAYS turn out perfectly! This book was a mainstay in our home for years, until recently when it was 'lost'. It has simply disappeared. The variety of muffins, the ease of preparation, and the delicious results are well worth locating a book and wearing it out!

Ideas have consequences!

Review Date: 2006-01-11
Dr. Dan Palm, Chair of the History and Political Science Department at Azusa Pacific University, and Dr. Thomas Krannawitter from Hillsdale College in Michigan, write on the history of ideas behind the American Civil Liberties Union, the federal Courts, and the conflicting ways America has come to understand itself in the Twentieth Century. _A Nation Under God?_ argues that, from its founding in the 1900's, the ACLU's primarily motivation has been derived from modern progressivism - a philosophy that denies the possibility human nature for the sake of remaking society in terms of participatory evolution enforced by a powerful administrative state. Though often appearing in the guise of democracy and individual rights, progressivism rejected what the American Founders knew to be the basis of liberty, rooted in self-evident truths of human equality and eternal God-given rights, as stated in the Declaration of Independence. Far from establishing a "Christian nation" - as indeed many Right-wing factions claim - Palm and Krannawitter show how the Founders merely intended to provide a general basis for the cultivation of the virtues needed to maintain a constitutional democracy. The First Amendment's Establishment Clause only forbids a national denomination; it is of course coupled with the protection of Free Exercise. Yet the Supreme Court's reading of the First Amendment has brought these two clauses into collision, giving way to rulings that are no longer based on principle - thus giving the ACLU very arbitrary power in shaping national life. The authors call on us as citizens to realize the contingency of these judge-made laws, and rethink the character of our regime in light of the "laws of nature and nature's God."

The definitive history of a seminal NATO decision

Review Date: 2000-03-22
Congressman Gerald Solomon, then Chairman of the Rules Committee of the US House and a longstanding member of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly, provides an authoritative account of how the sixteen NATO nations sought to accommodate the striving of Central European nations to rejoin the West while forging a strategic partnership with Russia. Drawing on previously publicly undisclosed documents and his privileged conversations with leaders throughout Europe and within the Congress, Congressman Solomon's impressive work, together with James Goldgeier's history of the US dimension of the deicision, Not Whether But When (Brookings 1999), serves as the point of departure for those interested in this key dimension of managing continental drift in the new Europe. A Gem of Legal History
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2008-02-29
This collection of essays by leading historians of the time surrounding America's founding is invaluable to anyone who is interested in understanding much of the terminology that was "in the air" during that period.

Whether in pamphlets, sermons, bills of rights, constitutions, letters, or speeches the words used in the run-up to the colonies' split from Great Britain cannot be understood in a "self-evident" way (as some present-day academics would have us believe). The essays in this volume offer important contextual analysis when it comes to figuring out exactly what the Founders meant when they spoke of "rights" and what this meant for the cause of revolution and the founding of a new nation.

If you want to begin to get a grasp on the legal philosophy of the Founding era then this book should be at the top of your list. No one should attempt to tackle this area of legal intellectual history without surveying these writers and their works here. Many speak today about the rhetoric of the Founding without actually attempting to understand what the Founders themselves meant when they used words like "rights." This book will help immerse the reader in the intellectual climate of the time and cut through some of the polemic-infused arguments of some current thinkers.

I get the feeling that the word "ideology" is becoming more and more popular these days. Even Obama keeps bringing it up to refer to Bush's war. This is a good thing because ideologies become the sort of lemons out of which our minds can make lemonade with, and the more we focus on ideology the more we focus on the root of the problems instead of just labeling people as good or evil and killing them which still seems to be the usual solution to so many problems. I mention this because chapter 3 "The Complex Course of Ideological Change" provides an insightful discussion on the subject.

This book seems to be a condensed and bite-sized version of Dr. Higgs' many contributions to political economy.

Chapter 5 "What Got Us Into and Out of the Great Depression" is worth the price of the book by itself.

The one thing I did not like was the title and cover. It gives off this conspiracy theory "the government is out to get us" type of feel which I think turns some people off.

I can't think of that many other books that do a great job of discussing so many important concepts and bits of history in so short a time. Highly recommended.

I also recommend Against Leviathan: Government Power and a Free Society and Crisis and Leviathan: Critical Episodes in the Growth of American Government (A Pacific Research Institute for Public Policy Book) by the same author.

An excellent study of New Jersey's role in the Civil War-
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2000-05-17
New Jerseyans in the Civil War is a readable and enjoyable study of New Jersey's role in the Civil War. The author's major theme is how the influence of popular attitude regarding race and slavery, evolving out of the state's history, conditioned its ambivilence towards the war. The author asserts that persistent, strident criticism of the conduct of war and its purposes, put New Jersey out of step with the rest of the northern states. Readers will find the book to be interesting not only for its focus on the state's unique role in the war, but as a microcosm of the causes of the Civil War, and its impact.

This is the best book I have come across for teaching a young child to read. I have used this book with three children, all at various ability levels. It is organized in an easy to use manner with clear instructions. This book allows the parent (or anyone) to sit with the child rather than instruct the child in a workbook. I would also recommend this book for anyone with an elementary age child that needs review, or who has reading difficulties. The progression allows for review as necessary.

A religious version of "Inside American Education" by Sowell
Helpful Votes: 21 out of 22 total.
Review Date: 2004-09-04
This is an in-depth analysis about the many problems in the public school system in America. While reading it I often thought of Thomas Sowell's damming account of the public school system as detailed in his book "Inside American Education." John Stormer covers many of the same areas and expresses many of the same concerns, but John Stormer does it from a religious standpoint. Both books are very concerned about the declining academic standards in the public school system, both books are explore how children are being brainwashed in public schools, and both books are very concerned with the political agenda of the NEA.

John Stormer starts off by saying that before you can decide on what is the purpose of an education, you have to think about:

1) What is the nature of man?
2) What is his purpose?

Most public school officials have a humanist point of view about the nature and purpose of man. John Stormer points out this leads them in fundamentally different directions than most Christian want to go.

John Stormer quotes a number of professional educators who over the years have declared their intent to remake society, to "fix it up." His opposition to this appears to be what drove him to write this book. He is concerned about the declining academic standards, and the first chapter documents how each year students are performing worse and worse in math, spelling, reading, history, and so on. Most of the rest of the book focuses how in different ways public schools are trying to remake society.

There were a number of interesting points made in the book. For example John Stormer points out that it doesn't take years to teach Sex Education, the basics can be taught in an hour, maybe a couple hours if you really take your time. The reason Sex Education is taught for so long is to wear down the values being taught at home. Many at public schools are looking to have schools replace the family.

If you are concerned about the decline in American Education over the last fifty years, but you aren't interested in a religious point of view, check out "Inside American Education." If you are a Christian, and want more information on what is happening in public schools, this book is a good one to check out. "None Dare Call It Education" is well written and well documented.

The sad, whitewashed truth about Communism and its influence in US Politics past
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2007-12-02
I got this book from the library and read it about 2 months ago, but I'd love to own it to reference and re-read. What is so great about the book is the thoroughness which Stormer uses in making his case. There are typically 2 or even 3 sources noted on EACH paragraph!! Most of the sources are governmental committees dedicated to fighting Communism. The other great thing about this book is that it effectively and accurately predicted the troubles that would soon arise in Vietnam and with indoctrination in public schools and the use of pop psychology. It is very sad that these things came to be, but to know that the vigilance existed then is encouraging.

It is fascinating to read about how our leaders often sold us out, mostly presidents like Truman, Kennedy and definitely Ike, and sat passive or even leant a helping hand to the socialists' push for domination in South America, parts of Africa and especially Eastern Europe and East Asia. These facts could almost be regarded as secrets when compared to the teachings in so many public schools. I felt a little betrayed that I'd simply been told Eastern Europe was the "communist bloc" after WWII because we had to share with Stalin. Now I understand that the citizens of those countries were no fools either, and they pleaded for Western help in staving off the communist ruin that came to their countries soon thereafter.

I'm guessing the updated version will highlight Ceacescu (i'm sure I'm spelling this wrong) 's reign and mandatory abortion in the name of "the good of the people" and the terror of Vietnam and the Khmer Rouge in Cambodia.

There is no "conspiracy theory" here. Just the facts. Conspiracies do exist in the form of the UN. This is addressed here too. I don't think anyone can claim any of the typical dismissals as "tin-foil hat wearing" or anti-semitism. It is a shame that such rhetoric can disuade people from learning about history because of being frightened by some ridiculous label that is false anyway.

As our government continues to toy with socialistic ideas of health care and how to fix Social Security, we typically hear the solution to the problems (all caused by socialistic government growth and control) lies in the expansion of government growth and control. Anyone who cares about the US's future should head Stormer's warning. He was certainly righ the first time about support of socialism by our leaders. The book also illustrates the duplicitous nature of those leaders who claim to "look out for our own good."
