A People's Journalism Hall of Famer
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2003-01-25
George Seldes, who died at the age of 104 in the mid-1990s, published "Freedom of the Press" in 1935 after an impressive tenure as a daily newspaper journalist from the teens through the through the 1920s, and just before reporting on the rise of fascism in Europe.
The book demonstrates Seldes' credentials as perhaps the pre-World War II era's foremost media critic, and a pioneer in investigative consumer reporting.
Seldes exposes, in "Freedom of the Press," the connections among big money, political influence, and news coverage. He takes on the pharmaceutical and utilities industries, Big Oil, and Wall Street. He critiques the media of the era and the struggle for journalists to report the kinds of stories Seldes later published in his muckraking newsletter "In Fact," a forerunner of "I.F. Stone's Weekly" and the present day's "CounterPunch" and "Hightower Lowdown."
Honest reporters' struggles with their own working conditions and the relations between organized labor and the media are also among Seldes' important topics. In addition to calling news media owners to account, he includes a "Roll of Honor" noting the models for journalistic integrity.
Readers of "Freedom of the Press" also will want to locate Seldes' other volumes, all of which contain, literally, the stories of a century. In fact (if you'll pardon the pun), one of those other volumes is titled "Witness To A Century," and another of note is "Never Tire of Protesting," in which the story of "In Fact" is told. Reading of Seldes' career is inspirational in any day.

EXCELLENT OVERVIEW OF FUNDAMENTAL 19th CENTURY IDEAS
Helpful Votes: 7 out of 7 total.
Review Date: 2002-06-21
The title of the book does'nt reveal the scope and usefulness of this work by the one of the greatest thinkers of the XXth century.
This opus reviews some of the fundamental ideas that shaped our modern western world, and dwells with the genesis of the political, economical and philosophical theories which contributed to the transformation of Europe and America in the 19th century (and in the 20th as well).
In this well written journey, we walk from the Vienna Congress and the Holy Alliance to World War I. In doing so, the causes of the intellectual progress and the industrial revolution are analized. The evolution of democracy in England, the radical philosophers and economists, Malthus, Bentham, J.S.Mill, David Ricardo and then the origins of socialism, Owen, Marx, Engels, the formation of democracy in America, the issues of slavery, Lincoln's political thought, the inception of modern Nationalism and Imperialism, all constitute necessary chapters of this intellectual voyage with Russell. This book could very well constitute mandatory reading for history or political science students. Very highly recommended.

Review Date: 1999-12-25
Political liberals in the West have for years used a distorted anaysis of freedom and justice in an attempt to expand the power of the state. This book examines those distortions and argues for a concept of limited government as the best means to defend both freedom and justice.

Great thinkers defending personal choice
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 7 total.
Review Date: 2000-07-01
A tough subject deserves the application of great minds. Two of the greatest of the 20th century --also unrepentant defenders of liberty-- provide damning philosophical and observational evidence against the "war on drugs". This is a must-have book for those who believe that individuals, not governments, should control their bodies. It is also an excellent source book for students who need a counter-point to the hysterial agit-prop produced by the government and others frightened by inanimate objects (drugs). An excellent companion book is Dr. Szasz's "Our Right to Drugs". (See also: "The Federalist Papers" to learn the views of the American founders on self-control as a property right.)

Great Review of English Radicalism
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2004-05-01
This volume is a fantastic review of the English democratic/libertarian movement at the outset of the French Revolution. Radicals like Thomas Cooper, Thomas Walker, Joseph Priestly, John Thewall, and Richard Price all attepted to reform and enlighten the masses to reform the English government. They stood for freedom of association, freedom of religion and disestablishment of the corrupt Church/State alliance, free elections and annual parliments, and the ending of the monopolistic corporations in Britian.

Also covered is the tyrannical reaction of the English government. Treason trials, Sedition acts, abolition of the freedom of association and suppression of democratic clubs show the tyranny of the English aristocracy and their devoltion to keeping themselves in power at all costs. For anyone interested in democracy, libertarian government in the age of the French Revolution this book is a great buy.

.. a clear and compelling vision of liberty ...
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 2001-06-18
Still profoundly controversial more than fifteen years after his death, Robert LeFevre's The Fundamentals of Liberty is a deeply penetrating and insightful work that encompasses, in clear, step-by-step fashion, a unique and compelling vision of liberty and the freedom philosophy that resulted from over 25 years of study and thought in LeFevre's work as a newspaper editor, lecturer, author, and as the founder and president of Rampart College.

Widely regarded as one of the founders and pioneers of the modern libertarian movement, Robert LeFevre was a major influence on college campuses during the tubulent 1960's and into the 1970's. His philosophical vision regarding ownership, the nature of mankind, and the role of government was often controversial to say the least, and sent shock waves thoughout California and the rest of the world. Many who attended his lectures or his Freedom School in the Colorado Rockies were and continue to be deeply influenced by his views.

Some of the chapter titles in this impressive volume include: The Industrial Revolution; The Robber Barons; Epistemology; Property and Ownership; Early Man; Socialism; Communism; Wealth; Banking, The American Story; The Declaration of Independence; Freedom; Withdrawal of Sanction; and more! (34 chapters in all!)

The information contained in this rare volume covers, in clear, simple, step-by-step language, most of the concepts personally presented by LeFevre in his famous Freedom School, first in Colorado, and later in California. In an earlier form, it was distributed as a mimeographed home-study course. Completely re-written and expanded, this magnificent work, LeFevre's magnum opus, was completed in 1986, only a few weeks before his death. It provides an excellent and revealing introduction to key concepts and ideas, both for the new student and the advanced scholar.

Excellent content, cuts through all the BS and tells it like it is. This coupled with "We The People: A Call To Take Back America" by Thom Hartmann makes for some very important education for the uninformed American, which is most of us since our media is so corrupted.

Great mix of history with thrilling suspense
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2005-08-03
This book deals with the life of Patrick Henry. Certainly not the best known of the revolusionaries but one that was held in very high esteem by the likes of George Washington, Sam Adams, John Adams, and James Madison. Though it is about 89% factual, it does play with a few details enough to add spice and suspense. It is very well written and keeps you connected regardless of when it was written. I don't often read this kind of book, but it kept me connected to it. It was a real page turner. It also sparked enough interest in me to do some historic research myself on the accounts portrayed in the book. I thoroughly recommend this book. It truly sets the powerful and exciting stage the revolutionaries were facing in the time leading up to and untill after American Independence.
