This was required reading for a class I was taking in College. Most books that I have to buy for classes I never touch again after the end of the semester, except this book. Not only are the documents in the book interesting, but the chronological and categorical layout is brilliant.

Great range of material set up in a book one can read for academic purposes or use as a casual "bathroom" read.

Superb, Comprehensive Look At Radical Thought In America
Helpful Votes: 17 out of 17 total.
Review Date: 2003-11-18
The ordinary American's personal experience of history is often organized around a pantheon of readings and tomes that view our democratic experience as a pristine and elevated philosophical exercise by icons of verity and probity. Recent treatments such as Howard Zinn's "A People's History of The United States" and the wonderful "Founding Brothers" by Joseph J. Ellis have helped us to recognize the fact that while brilliant they were, the founders of this country were both mortal and fallible, and were hardly disinterested and objective idealists. This superb work by Timothy McCarthy and John McMillan (both history professors at Harvard) offers us over 150 short but spellbinding works by a wide variety of authors that help to widen the reader's understanding of the radical American experience, and to demystify the highly emotional and politically explosive issues and concerns that have faced us in terms of home-grown radical perspectives regarding social and political issues ranging from the original Articles of Confederation to those surrounding slavery, from corporate sponsored police brutality against union organizing to the war in Vietnam, from strident environmentalism to the current protests against the war in Iraq. All of it is here, and wonderfully so.

In essence, the authors have culled a treasure-trove of radical statements and observations that breathe life into our rather checkered history. Far from the sanitized and revisionist efforts one finds in most public school treatments of American history, herein one discovers a masterfully articulated series of articles written in colorful prose by those intimately involved in the radical protest, and most usually written from the radical perspective. The reader fins himself on an incredible journey into the various issues and concerns that have animated our long and often fractious progress toward a more perfect civil union. The book is organized into eleven principal chapters, each of which offers an absorbing selection of articles pertaining to cross-cutting issues such as the American revolution; the utopian visions relating to the very idea of a constitutional republic itself; abolitionism; suffrage and feminism; labor, anarchism, and socialism; civil rights; the new left and the counterculture; radical environmentalism; gay rights; and an epilogue with articles directed to some recent transcending issues and the radical writings relating to them.

The list of notable authors included ranges from Samuel Adams to Ralph Nader, from Thoreau to Frederick Douglas, from Susan B. Anthony to Huey Long, and from Barry Commoner to Malcolm X. The list of worthwhile notables just goes on and on. Without a doubt, this is the most readable, provocative, and useful collection of American critical writings by radical thinkers I have personally had the joy and benefit of reading. What I truly love about it is that it is the perfect way to read short articles and thought-pieces without spending hours plowing through individual chapters. The length of the individual articles ranges from two to seven pages, so the book is a great way to spend some break time or lunch time reading material along and to be able to finish the particular piece in a single short sitting. It is also provides an extremely eclectic and electrifying range of views and opinions for one to have the chance to experience, and adds immeasurably to the reading experience as a companion teaching device one could use admirably as an adjunct to a text such as Zinn's for use with the average undergraduate student. This is a book I would heartily recommend for anyone interested in a fascinating exploration of radical American thought and critiques of the mainstream culutre, and one that is certainly a terrific way to give a meaningful educational gift to aloved one this holiday season! Enjoy!

Very interesting! You don't need to be a Radical to enjoy.

I'm a longtime Cthulhu keeper but new to Ramsey Campbell (other than the material in the rulebook). The first half of the book is devoted to resource material covering magic, monsters and locations in the fictitious Severn Valley (well the Severn Valley itself isn't fictitious of course). The second half is devoted to a campaign of 7 or 8 scenarios. Everything is well written, well thought out and seems very playable. I'm looking forward to running it!

I've waited a long time for this one, and the wait was worth it! It's chock full of scenarios (forming a campaign which you can ignore if you want), and lots of background material on Ramsey Campbell's Severn Valley. I wish there'd been more maps and maybe more info on some of the locations but all in all, this is a COOL package!

It's good to see Chaosium getting back to topnotch books again. This one along with Unseen Masters, represents a "new wave" of Call of Cthulhu - as good or better than any of the stuff released in years.

You can't really go wrong with this package, it's got background resource material for the Goatswood area and a nice bundle of scenarios that look like fun to run (I can't wait to spring some of them on my group! HEH HEH HEH) I don't want to give away any spoilers but there's an S&M club, and the "GUARD" at the club is such a wicked idea not to mention the dude who runs the place. Good to see Ramsey the man himself giving the introduction, read his Silent Children book if you really want to get chills!

The artwork is decent, and lots of it. Plenty of handouts too, which are really important as far as I am concerned. One thing I could do without though is the side illustrations, they take up too much room that could maybe be used for information. But that's a small jibe compared to the value.

This book is an excellent resource for the system administrator wanting to ensure the uptime and availability of his Linux machine. Iain's writing style makes it an easy book to read, and at the same time, technical enough for the experienced Linux admins. Now that Linux is being deployed on larger machines (like IBM mainframes), reliability is a key focus, and this book does a fantastic job of covering the important areas.

I have read may books where the author skirts around the real issue and does not answer the basic questions you had when you picked up the book. This book has lots of real world stuff in it - some of the things he talks about - I have seen and done myself!

Very useful overall, with lots of useful and informative side bars.
Lots of good information - low overhead!

Parts of the book were entertaining to read - a hard thing to say about a technical text!

This is a very different book.

Brian Campbell was my 5th grade teacher also, and he is a great teacher and a great person. When he taught science, we had to log things into our science notebooks, and sometimes we had to draw what we looked at. We would record our observations, questions, thoughts, and the results of our tests. Mr. Campbell used some entries from his previous students and put them into this book. Science Notebooks will show you what science notebooks should look like, and it will help teachers teach science to their students.

I bought this book from Half.com, then ended up taking the essay course taught by the author, Dr. Mary Gallagher, in NYC. Made all the difference. Her course directly reflected the method that she describes in her book. If essays are your weakness, using her method should make a positive difference.

I'm happy to recommend this book - it's quite useful. The first half of the book is tips, the second half is 80 full-length essay exam with model answers. The tips section is built on Gallagher's essay writing "system" which is basically the IRAC system which every law student uses, modified into CRAC. Her "model paragraph" system is quite useful, and something that I wish I had learned about earlier in my law school career. The only downside is that the book was written in '96, and while substantively the information isn't out-of-date, it would be nice if it wasn't so old.

I knew I had a firm grasp on the material but just couldn't get it together. With this book, the bar exam writing process finally made sense! I'm extremely happy I found Mary's system because it helped me to pass on my third try.

I highly recommend this book to those looking to improve their exam writing skills. The book also contains some general bar study tips that helped me enormously. In my opinion this book is the bar exam study bible.

This is one of the best-designed books I've used. The notes, tips, and cautions are plentiful, which really helped to enhance the topics. There is also a quick reference to special features called Power tips. A large tear out section of keyboard commands is included in the front. I had no idea there were so many shortcuts.

I found the illustration techniques uniques and extremely helpful. The tables not only show the function of a tool but where to find more information if needed. The whole book has cross references to other sections, great help.

Steve Bain's book on CorelDRAW ranks among the best books I've read on any technical subject. The organization is excellent; essential tools are named and described in the first few chapters, and then explored in detail later along with the remaining tools and functions. The author's command of English is wonderful; the book is clear, concise, coherent, thorough, and readable. I have been concurrently reading through this book while I use CorelDRAW at work, and am enlightened at every turn of the page. Each chapter ends with indispensable troubleshooting tips geared toward solving dozens of common user problems. Most of the information covered applies to previous versions of Draw, at least two versions back. You won't be disappointed with this one, it's a lifesaver !

This book was like coming home for me. I am one of those people Ms. Campbell means when she says you need have no interest in Africa to enjoy her stories and suggestions. I heard Ms. Campbell speak in Los Angeles. Following a recent business trip, I had an opportunity to actually visit some of the African healers she writes about in her book, "Called to Heal."

The healers were very touched by Ms. Campbell's sensitivity and spoke of her generous help bringing several of them to the USA to expand their professional networks. "Spirit of the Ancestors" came about when one visiting healer said it was time for Ms. Campbell, "a modern American", to write about how she herself "works with the ancestors." They said "her approach is pure and crosses cultures. It belongs to everyone."

I immediately read the book and loved it! The stories are charming and authentic. I loved her close family and have tried some of the suggestions with my own children. Now they can't wait to tell me about their dreams and even listen to one another for "clues to the ancestors" that guard over them. My teenager is sharing the book with her friends and teachers.

The book is very touching, crosses not only cultures but I would add religion, education, ethnicity, and more. Buy it for your family and then have fun experimenting. It's a joy!

Susan Schuster Campbell speaks with a clear voice, sharing her African experiences through Western eyes. Americans have lost the vital connection with ancestors. Susan's book is full of personal stories and practical applications for reconnecting and building personal relationships with ancestral guides.

The African approach of contact with the ancestors complements religious and spiritual practices. In Spirit of the Ancestors, Ms. Campbell covers a variety of topics: 1)contacting ancestors; 2)ancestral dreaming; 3)following ancestral guidance; 4)doorway to the spiritual; 5)gifts of the ancestors; 6)the practice of ancestors. I have found this easy-to-read book helpful in my own shamanic practice and highly recommend it to anyone interested in deepening their own spiritual path.

This is a great book !!..It is well written, informative and entertaining. many pictures, drawings and in depth information on just about everything..I also make my own primitive archery equipment and hunt with homemade bows/arrows which was my prime reason for buying the book.. I was very impressed with the in depth information in this area and as a primitive bowyer myself I can attest to the fact that the author at least has a good basic understanding of such archery.. Only those of us that are obsessed with such skills will know more than the author.. I can tell that it is not his primary hobby, but I can also tell that he is pretty knowledgeable on the subject..

If you are into primitive archery this section alone is interesting read( it is NOT an intructionional book, but is informative enough to give you good insight to how native bows were made)..

The book covers a lot of different topics and has very in depth knowledge of each area..

This book provides a fascinating and comprehensive glimpse into the daily lives of pre-contact California Indians. It is laid out in easy to use chapters that provide just enough information to be complete, but still include local examples and myths to add flavor to the narrative. My only complaint is that some of the skills are a bit complicated and are confusing to read. I guess you just have to go out to the wilderness and try it out! This is a must-read for anyone interested in California Indians and their history.

Professor Ken Campbell was a combat Marine in Vietnam in 1968-69; today he is Director of the International Relations Program at the University of Delaware. His first-hand wartime experiences coupled with his educational background give meaning and relevance to his analysis of the two wars, Vietnam and Iraq.

His analogy of what he calls two quagmires is an objective comparison, from one extremely well qualified to provide a spin-free overview. A must read for all who want no-nonsense, lucid comparisons of Vietnam and Iraq and the horrors of war.

Outstanding, emminently readable and well researched...a must read.

There are indeed some hard lessons of war. Professor Campbell has thoroughly analyzed the reasons for America's slow slide into the debacle of Vietnam and compared that situation to the current situation in Iraq. In both cases, there were solid reasons for the end result. In spite of all attempts to portray them as different, they are in essence, very similar.

In many respects, my experiences during the Vietnam War were similar to the author's. I was an F4 Phantom II fighter pilot at Ubon, Thailand at the same period of time. Although most of my missions were flown over North Vietnam and Laos, I flew strikes against Khe Sanh at the height of that battle. At the start of the war, I was a "true believer" in the cause and was most eager to participate. It's hard to give up ideas you've held onto so tenaciously for many years, but over time, I came to the belief that our involvement in Vietnam was a tragic strategic mistake. My recent book, Phantom Reflections: The Education of an American Fighter Pilot in Vietnam was my version of how those deeply held beliefs changed significantly over time.

At the start of the Iraq War, I had grave reservations about the wisdom of our proposed course of action for many of the same reasons I thought our Vietnam adventure was ill advised. This book does an excellent job of comparing the two situations and hopefully, will generate some significant discussions among those in a position to influence policy. Well done!

A Tale of Two Quagmires is a meticulously-researched
examination of how the American public was misled into
ruinous military adventures in Vietnam and Iraq and of
the "crucial lessons" that must be acknowledged in order
to avoid such debacles in the future.

Once a young, battle-hardened, Marine determined to
survive his time in a war of dubious necessity; now a
highly-regarded scholar of international affairs,
Professor Ken Campbell offers a reasoned alternative
to this cycle of deception and quagmire. In doing so
he does not entirely reject the necessity of wars:
only those without legitimate purpose and clear-cut
strategy.

The wisdom contained in A Tale of Two Quagmires has
the potential to put the United States on a road to
recapturing "the moral high ground in international
relations" and, in the process, spare humanity the
horrific consequences of such senseless and protracted
conflicts -- a gift beyond value to future generations.

The illustrations tell several stories at once (keep an eye on the cat, who keeps wanting to go out when she's in, and in when she's out) and provide a rich subtext to the main story. The text itself is engaging on so many levels...the rhymes, the diction, the repetition, the animal sounds, not to mention the way it portrays a hectic and not-entirely-normal school-day morning in a New England household.
My husband and I have read this over and over with our son since he was 2 years old. He's now almost 5 and we all still love it.

Read it over and over and over

I have read this wonderful book many many times to my 2 year old grandson. I finish reading it and he wants it read again. We are on our 6th week of checking it out at the library. I will probably purchase this book. The words flow like a song and he is getting to the point where when it says "the cow looked at me and the cow said ___" he fills in the "moo" part. The illustrations are equally as good. There is so much detail and objects to see that it takes many readings to take note of all of the details. I enjoy reading it as much as he enjoys listening. We are currently searching for other books by this author.

Rhythmic text & picture hints -- great for pre-readers!

Predictable repetitive rhyming text begs for a child to participate. Large colorful illustrations hint provide hints for what comes next. A great book for the younger set, not to mention a little humor for the adult reader.
