Imperial Hubris and the Narcissism of Small Differences

Gratefully, a literature grows which unites the ideas of the Old and New Left. No doubt, this is one of the seeds. Here, Judith Stein decides not to write about aggregates and macroeconomics but rather the history of the steel industry (and parenthetically, the civil rights movement) in Cold War United States. Here, Liberal policy allowed allies to pursue industrial policies which created vast industrial overcapacity, while denying unionist, staunch advocates of integration, similar protections. Failing to address the question of jobs, the Civil Rights movement disintegrated into vain, narcissistic, and legalistic struggles which produced much fury but few results. This book should be read with Robert Brenner's The Economics of Global Turbulence to see how class really does matter and how it conditions what success can be seen in the rightful concern of the New Left, racial equality.

I bought this book because i live in the south, and all the schools i applied to are in the south as well.
This book goes into depth about each one; it doesn't go REALLY in-depth, but it gives more information than any other book . It has about 20 pages of information on every college, which is more than most books- that usually don't have more than 3/4 pages on a single college. It talks about all the colleges on about 15 different aspects, a few that some books dont even mention, which is quite helpful.
The book is also extremely well organized. It's easy to look up any of the colleges in different aspects easily.
I recommend this book as it gives you good information on all the colleges it includes, both negative and positive feedback. It judges colleges not only on an overall basis, but also on many different aspects, which helps one see the specific strengths and weaknesses of each college.

Bravo to Oliver Buckton for unmasking the stuffy conventions of Victorian life and revealing the true erotic nature of this seemingly reserved society. Dr. Buckton, with a bit of wit and wry humor offers up to the the reader the unmasking of such writers as Forster and Carpenter, yet it is his nonjudgemental style and flair for literary analysis that makes this book a better read then most others on this subject. He makes no apology for his subject matter, and if anything, this is his confessional too as he purges the findings of his research allowing conventional readers to peep into an erotic world without fear of shame. I feel any English major would benefit greatly from this book and certainly would shake up their professors with these stunning concepts....A must for the Grad student!

This is a brilliant book on a subject that we often dismiss as trivial. Remarkably, as you read Ponce de Leon's history of the evolution of celebrity journalism, you realize that most of the strategies the celeb followers and creators employed 100 years ago are still being used today in People, Sports Illustrated and similar magazines. Equally fascinating is the way more astute (or malleable?) celebrities learned to adapt to the culture of celebrity and present themselves in a certain manner so as to fit the necessary mold. (Witness the way Katherine Hepburn posed as an everyday woman with the same concerns as any other homemaker during the 1930's -- the truth was probably very different.) Mr. Ponce de Leon's first book is an engaging and penetrating critique into the ways in which celebrities are presented -- and present themselves -- and how the entire notion of celebrity is manipulated in ways that are designed to reaffirm middle class mores.

John F. Sensbach has written an engaging and erudite synthesis of Moravian attitudes toward slavery. The writing style hides Sensbach's grip on the complexities of the literature concerning slavery and racism in the early United States. His use the words and lives of individual Moravian slaves brings to light the voices of those who normally would have been voiceless during the colonial and revolutionary periods. His analysis is not one-sided; he brings to light all the facets of Moravian cultural life and how those religious and social institutions impacted the Moravian debate on the institution of slavery. The Moravians may then be likely viewed as a model for understanding the ambiguity of attitudes toward slaves during the colonial period and early Republic. Sensbach's writing is beautiful and easily conveys a masterful understanding of the period. This is the sort of book that a historian reads not only for information, but for enjoyment as well.

Sherman's March to the Sea is well-known, however his subsequent campaign up through the Carolinas is not. Sherman is widely considered to be the inventor of manuever warfare, and as such this is required reading. It is little known that this campaign continued for 9 days after Appomattox!
