This is even better than Mackesy's WAR FOR AMERICA. It should be used as a reference for all students of the British side of the war.

Until the publication of this book there was little recognition of North Carolina's outstanding contribution to the Loyalist cause during the Revolution. This is somewhat surprising since North Carolina probably had a greater number of Loyalists in proportion to its population than did any other colony. DeMond's groundbreaking work in this area of Revolutionary studies brings together all the available source material and identifies great numbers of these heretofore little known Loyalists. To the genealogist the Appendices in the back of the book will doubtless hold the greatest interest, for herein are found (1) lists of soldiers and civilians who supported the Crown throughout the Revolution; (2) lists of Loyalists who suffered land confiscation; (3) lists of Loyalists who made application to Great Britain for compensation for loss of office or property; and (4) lists of North Carolina Loyalists who received pensions from Great Britain. This definitive work leaves little to speculation concerning the history or genealogy of Loyalists in North Carolina.

Ludwig Erhard is not exactly a household name, either in the world of economics or politics. But this great man was economics minister, and eventually the chancellor of West Germany from after the war until 1966.

His faults mainly lie in the areas of not being a man of detail and his intense dislike of the political 'beast'.

His strengths all focus around his unswerving comittment to free market economics as the prescription for the creation of national wealth and freedom.

This books tells a fascinating story about a fascinating man who was possessed by noble ideas and ideals, and who achieved much.

This book made me antisocial for a couple of days. A great buy!

This book was required reading for my first Women Studies course in college on the history of the female race. It was a truly eye-opening book at the time (1982) - and continues to be a great resource. Gerda Lerner is an admired figure in the American women's movement. She did the public a tremendous service in producing this book. Recommended for any library.

This is a compelling exploration of the efforts made by US government field agents in the last quarter of the 19th century to "domesticate" Native Americans: to teach them how to live and work Euro-American style, in nuclear rather than extended families, in square houses rather than round teepees, and within patriarchal gender relations and divisions of labor. The really interesting thing is that these field agents were very often women, for whom the value of "women's work"--its economic as well as its moral value--occasionally became destabilized even as they insisted upon native adoption of it for its "civilizing" influence. Simonsen gets at all of this (and more) by examining an array of evidence: popular domestic literature of the time, photographs taken by ethnologists and amateurs alike, and model homes run by graduates of such Indian schools as Virginia's Hampton Institute. A terrific, must-read for anyone interested in the history of domesticity, of labor relations among American whites and natives, and of western settlement.

Excellent book. Every Southerner--no, every American--should read this book. Smith has done us a great favor. Southern baby boomers will especially appreciate the best explanation I've read of why things are the way they are in the South today. Smith makes history an enjoyable read.

Escott has written a well-research, scholarly study of how ordinary people in North Carolina, white and black, interacted with the political and social institutions of the day. This is an important social history worth the time of anyone interested in Southern history after the Civil War. Escott focuses in particular on five counties but his study is more broad-based than this indictes. He uses statistics but the human story predominates.

As a retired Marine First Sergeant (white) who was very familiar with the history of the Montford Point Marines, my eyes were opened to a more telling story that needed to be told. Although most books, articles and movies focus on the confrontational pressure cooker of black vs. white in a few dramatic examples, this book was the first one that allowed me to actually feel the emotions of oppression during their routine daily life. I have read many books, articles and seen several movies on the subject of racism but I have never been enthralled like I have during my reading of this book.

What I found very commendable was the neutrality of the writer. The mixture of good stories of genuine helpful whites was balanced with an equal number of examples of racism. Because the book is 90 percent actual stories from Montford Point Marines and 10 percent framing the content for each chapter, you feel as though you are visiting with these special Marines on their front porch as they tell their story.

I commend the writer on his method of creating chapters in the book. Each Chapter has a unique focus that is very specific for that chapter. This will make for an excellent method of research when seeking specific information for public speaking or citation in future articles to be written.

Semper Fi!

I have an old book by Mark Catesby. Half is in French and half in English, it is supposed to one of two volumes, it is not in very good shape, and most of the plates are missing. Do you have any thing more you could tell me about this book?
