Maine Books

In it's fifty years of existence the Farnsworth Art Museum has focused on acquiring a collection of art that represents the history of art and artists in Maine. This 256 page book is an excellent survery of their holdings from the early paintings of J Jonathan Fisher to the realist paintings of Neil Welliver.

There is a one page review of each of 84 artists followed by one to three color plates of their works held by the Farnsworth. The biographical sketch of each artist is concise and accurately describes how the artist fits into not only art in Maine but art in America from the 18th century to the present.

I love Maine art and I thoroughly enjoyed this book and learned a lot from it.

For anyone who enjoys the sparkle of sun on water, the haunting cry of a loon, or the reflection of fall colors and blue sky, this book is an outstanding reminder of the importance of healthy lakes to healthy human communities. Barnes and Bright invite us into their perspective of Maine's fresh water lakes with an intimacy that reveals the personal connections they both feel for these places. This book is filled with striking photographs and powerful imagery of the beautiful lure of Maine's lakes. An excellent book.

Maine Lighthouses: Documentation Of Their Past distinguishes itself from other books about Maine Lighthouses in that is is grounded almost entirely on primary sources. J. Candace Clifford, a lighthouse historian, collaborates with Mary Louise Clifford to present execerpts from the lighthouse collection in the National Archives that describe how lighthouse sites were selected, constructions of various towers and auxiliarh buildings, the appointment of keepers, weather-related damage to the stations, repairs and reconstruction done as the years advanced, logbooks of the daily lives of keepers, and much more. Black-and-white photographs illustrate this definitive historical resource for lighthouse fans; Maine Lighthouses: Documentation Of Their Past is the next best thing to combing primary sources firsthand.

This wonderful book exposes lobster fishers for what they essentially are.They're overwhelming use of styrofoam products and plastics that contribute so much to ozone depletion is well documented.Hardworking men although the unit of each area works in a ganglike fashion to discourage newcomers ie;(retirees, high school kids with 30-40 traps,women.A great read!

Not only does this book contain some incredibly well composed and technically stunning photos of the soul of Maine, they are are complimented by poignant and insightful quotes giving "mindsight" views of the psyche of Maine. I found only two minor flaws - it otherwise does a much better job of representing Maine as much more than just "a rock-bound (Southern) coast" than any book of the same genre that I can recall!

This book is great it is well written and very helpful very information not only is it full of history .But it will help people doing family tree It gives the names of the people who help settle the towns. It does give you the information about the peole who live in these towns My father have this copy And I have read it several times It was helpful when my son had to do a reported about the state

This is a wonderful book. I've seen it while in Maine. It hits
on all parts of Maine's history. Did you know Maine was almost called "Columbus"?

This volume of Maine wills is regarded as one of the greatest sources for colonial genealogy ever published. It is a faithful transcript of 471 wills, and it contains data on several thousand related individuals for the years 1640-1760. Information contained in the wills includes full name of the testator, names of heirs and their relation to the testator, bequests of real and personal property, names of executors, witnesses and appraisers, and dates of recording and probate. Four separate indexes conveniently guide the reader to his objective.
