This book accomplishes several things. First, it provides a time line of verified events from 3066 on through 3068 which does a lot do diffuse some of the confusion about what really happened during those periods. Also, while the book may not answer questions it certainly does provide ideas for campaign and game settings, and even includes a bare bones campaign for people to pay through with ideas for expanding upon it.

In all, the product is worth while so long as you know how to use it. Do not expect it to tell you everything that has happened, if anything this just makes the whole story line more confusing. Instead it should be viewed as a source of ideas for games by using the questions it generates and the limited information it does offer up.

If there is any failing with the book it is that all you learn is what the typical civilian would know. This leaves you feeling "out of the loop" if you are especially interested in the events of any one particular faction. Hopefully this will be corrected in some future books so that we can get a more detailed view of what happened inside each faction instead of just a broad overview of the whole Inner Sphere.

Engrossing but a little tricky to follow

Continuing the Word of Blake Jihad plotline, /Hot Spots 3070/ keeps with the "collected news blurb" format of the previous /Dawn of the Jihad/ supplement. With how these blurbs are occasionally inset inside one another, span pages, and otherwise get jumbled about it can be somewhat hard to follow, but no worse than your average magazine that tries to cram information into every available space. While slightly aggrivating in that the scope of the articles tend to generate more questions than answers, this is mollified by the fact that, pretty much, this is the entire point. While a proper timeline of "this happened when" would be nice, it wouldn't be appropriate for the tone of the Jihad storyline and such a thing will probably come out when the plotline ends and it transitions into the Republic of the Sphere.

They do start hinting at Wobblie concentration camps and citizen programming, though...

Good/sad book - left ?'s

True to life experience. I really felt for Rob and his family. My only disappointment was that the book left open ended questions. Vikki left the state with the kids - did he ever see them again. Has he rebuilt his realtionship with them? His dedication stated that he hopes a copy of the book makes it into thier hands. That makes me think that he has not seen them. The book was printed one year after he was awarded joint custody - if he has not seen the kids why leave the book with a happy ending (joint custody). Having the court declare that you have a right to thid kids doesn't mean anything if you haven't seen them. They are adults now. I'm very curious as to how the relationships turned out.

A realistic account of the tragedy of false abuse allegation

This account is very real and true to life. I know because I have lived through an almost the exact same case as Mr. McQueeney. If you are a father, you owe it to your child to read this book. It accurately accounts what can happen to you if an ex-spouse decides to use against you what has become known as the "nuclear weapon of the custody battle."

Read this book to know what can happen to you. Be prepared so you won't be blindsided. The same thing that happened to Mr. McQueeney happened to me. Knowing the way these cases work ahead of time would have saved me tens of thousands of dollars and spared my son the agony of his mother's abuse.

Borrow this Bouguereau

This is the official catalog of the 1984 Paris-Montreal exhibition that helped restore some of the luster to Bouguereau's reputation. It contains several critical essays and dozens of reproductions. However - I prefered Wiseman's more recent book for several reasons. Firstly, while Wiseman has fewer reproductions of paintings, they tend to be in colour and printed full-page. Most of the reproductions here are in black and white and small. Secondly, Wiseman includes most of the best-known Bouguereau paintings. Thirdly, Wiseman is simply more readable to a non-professional reader. Much of the information isn't very enlightening to someone who simply wants to learn a bit about Bouguereau's life or enjoy some of his paintings. If you are a professional art historian specializing in pompier art, then I can understand seeking out a copy of this book for your collection. Otherwise, just borrow it from a library.

This book is invaluable to me. My art teacher had a photocopy version of it that I've gone to again and again. I finally found myself a copy and happily shelled out 85$ for it. The reason I found this book far more valuable than the Wiseman book is probably because I'm a student.

This book has more pictures of his drawings, studies, and cartoons than any other I've seen. As well, it has a more thorough description of his working method than any other. I dont mind the black and white nature of most of the book, as most of the book is drawings and sketches, compositional studies and beautiful tracings.

Until the catalog that the ArtRenewelCenter is releasing, (and shamelessly, severely overcharging for, imo) I consider this book to be the best on Boug available. Though, this is the perspective of a student, and it colored by my love of technique and drawing.

GOOD LEGAL PERSPECTIVE
Helpful Votes: 7 out of 7 total.
Review Date: 2003-06-10
It should be noted from the outset that this book is not primarily on the Hartford fire itself, although it is covered in the first chapter. It is on the legal and financial fallout from the disaster. The authors explain that an out of court agreement was reached whereby the circus would be kept running while its owners paid out claims. The receiver for the case refused payment until all claims had been handled. Litigation arose only when it came time to pay the receiver, and he asked for $175,000. Had the circus declared bankruptcy as expected at first, claimants would have gotten next to nothing. The authors see this as a model settlement for mass disaster claims.

When I first picked this book up, I expected it to be a legal bore and almost returned it. But it was actually quite good. It presented a perspective on the Hartford fire and on disasters in general one rarely gets from most books. It is especially recommended for trial lawyers and litigants. Still, those interested in more standard accounts are urged to look at other books on the fire.

The authors are right to applaud the Hartford settlement and encourage alternative dispute resolution, but two questions are raised. First of all, as they admit, the fact that everyone was reasonable and efficient in 1944 during the war does not mean they will act that way today. Secondly, I fear that lawyers may use the threat of expensive litigation to coerce innocent defendants into paying up during mediation, sending us all back to square one.

Non Stop Summer

Review Date: 2003-11-23
This is a great book for middle school and high school students. The narrator is an 11 year old who has one hell of a summer in 1961 in East Hartford Connecticut. In addition to a first crush on a girl, he has to confront the ugliness of racism in his neighborhood among his peers and the adults. The author throws in a few jokes that baby boomers will catch (about using a Sandy Koufax baseball card in bike spokes, for example)and accurately describes the 1961 mindset for nostalgia buffs. It should be used in the schools in civics classes and for book reports.

Another must-have for CT highway buffs

Consider "Route 15" a follow-on to Larned's 1998 "Traveling the Merritt Parkway." It covers more ground, both geographical and chronological, but offers a similar mix of historical information and vintage photographs for road buffs and car buffs.

Larned starts with the Merritt Parkway: a bit of an overlap with the earlier book, but I didn't notice anything duplicated. Also covered is the Wilbur Cross Parkway (which was lightly treated in "Merritt") and Berlin Turnpike. There are some nice photos of the short-lived Connecticut River Boulevard (which I hadn't heard of until reading "Route 15") and a good treatment of the construction of the Charter Oak Bridge.

East of the bridge, the Wilbur Cross Highway gets a few pages; perhaps this 1950s road will be highlighted in "The Road to Boston" :-)

If you have read "Traveling the Merritt Parkway", here's how "Route 15" compares: Same layout; narrative driven by historical photos; generally ordered from south to north as you read. There's a bit more written information here than in "Merritt". There's a little more roadside culture, especially in the Berlin Turnpike section, and Larned diligently identifies all the classic cars you'll see in the photos. Like "Merritt", "Route 15" is made for skimming or reading straight through. There's no index, but given the geographical organization, its 128 pages are not that much to search through.

For Connecticut roadgeeks, this book's a keeper, and we want to see more from this author. But "Route 15" should also hold interest for car buffs, historians, and even commuters wondering what the roads were like decades ago, and how they ended up where they are now.

Ms Berryhill has taught three spiritual lessons for little hearts through a little snowflake's fear of jumping to earth. Children will see the importance of replacing fear with courage and trust, the importance of obeying one's parents as commanded in the ten commandments, and the joy of making others happy. The illustrations compliment the text and show Teeny Tiny's fears through the facial expressions drawn. This is a great choice for parents and Sunday School teachers to share with young children.
