Review Date: 2003-04-28
Justice League is saving the city again. Starring Wonder Woman, Superman, the Flash, Martian Manhunter, Green Lantern, Batman, and Hawkgirl. They are saving the city from a terrible robot named Amazo. Professor Ivo was working in his laboratory creating Amazo as the One-Man Justice League. It was all a lie when he (Amazo) was saving the city at first. At the end of the book, it was a happy ending because they all worked together as a good league to fight crime and also to defeat Amazo, the terrible robot.

Measured study of a crucial factor influencing American political science.

Review Date: 2008-04-03
Markku Ruotsila (adjunct professor of American church history, University of Helsinki) presents The Origins of Christian Anti-Internationalism: Conservative Evangelicals and the League of Nations, a close examination of conservative Christian skepticism of international politics. Discussing the historical and theological genesis of evangelical Christian thought on modern-day international organizations as well as American foreign policy, takes a bold stand in depicting a the fierce role that religion plays in American domestic and foreign procedure. Chapters focus on the influence of a number of different religious groups in America's history, including Calvinists, Lutherans, Methodists and Episcopalians, as well as exploring the history of conflict between religion and the League of Nations, and much more. "It was during the League of Nations controversy that conservative Christians first put in systematic terms that doctrinal insistence that the nation's faith should be placed only in the instrumentality of those Christian churches that were engaged in traditional evangelism and trusted God, not humanity, to perfect the world in due time. They taught that America could play a special role in the world only after it had reposed its faith in Christ and had thereby been transformed... they further insisted that America must not be tied to non-Christian nations but must remain a free agent in the world's affairs. Such beliefs... would have a profound impact on American foreign policy for the eighty or so years after the original debates over the League of Nations. In all likelihood, Christian anti-internationalism in its doctrinal and popular forms would last for a long time to come." Notes, a bibliography, and an index round out this measured study of a crucial factor influencing American political science.

The definitive reference on the players of the AFL
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 1999-08-12
August, 1999

Billy Shaw was just inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. To most football fans, their reaction is a "Duh!!!". But Shaw, and others such as Jim Otto, Larry Grantham, Clem Daniels, Booby Bell, just to name a few, are the hero players of The Other League.

There are other heroes, Lamar Hunt, Ralph Wilson, Bud Adams, even (yecch) Al Davis.

The words are lyrics and the pictures are stunning.

To anyone who remembers the old AFL, find a copy of this book somewhere and treasure it!!!!

A book that started and promoted a revolution in professional sports
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2007-11-04
In the late 1960's and early 1970's there were two revolutions in professional sports. The first was the rapid growth in the salary levels. This was due to the growing power of the players relative to the owners as they finally were able to overcome the legal and institutionalized restrictions that kept them in a degree of servitude. The second was the stripping of the facade of the players as mighty and pure men, where they were revealed as much less than the supposed ideals. This change was largely due to the appearance of tell-all books that described what really went on in the sports.
In major league baseball, the initial book was "Ball Four" by Jim Bouton and in the National Football League (NFL) it was this book. When both first came out, the authors were severely chastised for their statements, yet subsequent revelations have all supported their claims. Shortly before he died, Mickey Mantle spoke out about how his consumption of alcohol damaged his career and his body, something Bouton wrote about.
Meggyesy talks about the tremendous racism in the NFL in the sixties, the brutality and the rampant use of performance enhancing drugs. He also describes the tremendous hypocrisy of college football, where rules violations were routine and also common knowledge. Every subsequent statement by ex-players has upheld his statements, with many arguing that it was even worse that what Meggyesy claimed.
As you read the book, you clearly see that Meggyesy is an intelligent man in an area where acting intelligently was discouraged. Football players were to be seen on the football field and heard only through the violence of their on-field actions. Expressing an intelligent political opinion was considered "action detrimental to the sport and the team." The only flaw in the discourse is that Meggyesy's political views sometimes taint his discussions about football. It would have better if he had avoided going in that direction.

This book outlines a feminist approach to conducting group meetings, support groups, office meetings, consciousness-raising group, or collective. It inspires one to think about the meanings of "power" and how a group process can empower an individual as part of a group. Gives good, practical advice on dealing with conflict within a group. A great book for beginning non-profit collective, feminist group, student activist organization, etc.
