The 1998 Indy Review is a nice follow-up to the 1997 version. This book contains photos, highlights and statistics to every race in the 1998 IRL season. I felt the statistics sections were not as complete as the 1997 version, but it was not enough to take away a star. Another great book for Indy fans !

Well I read this book and it was very informative and inspiring at the same time. But what was so sad, it that it is true. I have seen this happen first hand myself but what can a black woman do about it. Maybe someone else who reads this book can tell me because it seems like we as a race of people are doomed!

Great Look Back at the "oldest Minor League"
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2000-07-15
With this book, O'Neal takes a look-back at the International League, which is baseball's oldest currently active minor league. First known as the "Eastern League," (and several other names over its first 30 years) this league at one time or other has had teams not only in the US, but also Canada (Toronto and Montreal), Cuba (Havana), and even briefly Puerto Rico (San Juan).

He starts off at the pre-1900 beginnings of the league, then takes us through the "Great War" and how it afected the league. He describes the beginnings of a Baltimore player (known then as "Dunnie's Babe") signed by Jack Dunn, the Baltimore manager and owner who later became known simply as Babe Ruth. O'Neal also describes the 1920's dynasty ] that Dunn put together with his team, the Baltimore Orioles. These teams may possibly have been the greatest minor league dynasty in history.

He also goes on the describe another dynasty, the Newark Bears of the late 1930's to early 1940's, the effects of World War 2 and television on the league, as well as the effects of the Castro Revolution on the Havana Sugar Kings of the late 1950's. He also discusses how the league fell on hard times in the 1960's, but bounced back with a fervor in the 1980s.

Numerous sidebars throughout the book mention anecdotes and famous stories. One of my favorites was indeed the one about Fidel Castro, who would attend games in a special seat while surrounded by numerous soliders. There are also illustrations and pictures of numerous IL stadiums, and diagrams of the players and stats for several pennant winning teams in the league's history.

A very entertaining look at baseball's oldest minor league. O'Neal has done his usual marvelous job in documenting the history of the International League.

Also recommended are O'Neal's book on the Pacific Coast League, and Grand Old Minor League by Dick Dobbins.

I never thought I would find a source for detailed IL stats from the teens and twenties--not even the IL itself was able to help me. But here they all are! The stats are laid out similarly to the Neft/Cohen/Neft "Sports Encyclopedia: Baseball" book, in an easy-to-read, team-by-team fashion. If you are interested in baseball history, and need old IL stats, this is the ticket!

Mr. McGee unravels the true story of the IRB and Irish politics
during 1870-1903. An employee of the Royal Irish Academy, Mr. McGee uses a high level of European scholarship and research
seldom seen in the USA anymore. Perhaps his greatest contribution is the fair assessment of Irish opposition to Parnell--never researched before. Mr.McGee also delves into the Fenian Brotherhood of America and Clan-na-Gael, showing the importance of American funding to the IRB. Highly Recommended--breaks new ground!

A taste of Island charm

British charm, Island attitude and the exploration of good food make this a must-own for any cook.

I first received this book as a gift from a native Bermudian before I'd ever visited the Island. I was amazed by the book's gorgeous pictures, the blurbs about Bermuda's history and traditions and the wide range of recipes it contained. Do yourself a favour and find this book for yourself.

The recipes range from simple picnic fare and everyday meals all the way up to masterpieces like a Bermudian wedding cake. There are even contributions by some of the premier restaurants from the Island's resorts.

I've made many of the dishes from this collection and hope that you find it as enjoyable and entertaining as I have!

An honest account from an honest man.
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2007-06-16
"Cometh the hour, cometh the man" is an adage that was penned for men such as General H. Norman Schwarzkopf.

It is very easy for Englishman to prefer British heroes over those from other countries. Some might say it is even easier for United States citizens to acknowledge the achievements of their own citizens whilst deprecating those of any other nation. Eisenhower, for example, was a great man - but so was Montgomery!

This book, however, is about a man who is not in open comparison to any. He tells an account of his own life which, as others have already stated, is so honest as to be brutally so. How odd that the fickle finger of fate is able to steer any man towards his ultimate destiny. What if Eisenhower (or even Montgomery) had joined the Navy?, what if Norman Schwarzkopf had railed against his father's wishes and "not" joined the US Army?

But they did and I am unable to avoid that cliché which demands that "the rest is history." Having said that, I would suggest General Schwarzkopf's contribution to that history is as great as any man's.

Other reviewers have sought to express their views in their own ways and quite rightly so! Some of those reviews give the reader a quick impression - "it's a great book" and all that, whereas others seek to paraphrase the book and, is so doing give the reader a better impression of what is found within it's pages.

Me, well, for the very first time in a long time, I feel as though I have read a book. Just think about that. Take a moment to look at any of my book reviews, then click on that button which says "see all my reviews" and you will see what I mean. Some of those books are on subjects I feel very passionate about. Some are great books and well worth the 5 star rating given. Others are less than ordinary and not even worth the single star one is required to donate to the charitable cause that best describes that particular offering in print.

Then I find a biography from a retired general who came to prominence during the first Gulf War, the biography of a man who recognised it does not take a hero to order men into battle, the biography of an ordinary bloke who did good, served his country and the cause of freedom well and expects nothing in return.

Buy it. Read it. Only then will you also appreciate what I mean by having "read" a book. There will come a time when you will read it again.

The Woman for All Seasons
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2005-10-08
Though Mrs.Judie Brown is hardly household name, she is well-known and loved by the remnant who have fought and continue to fight the often thankless battle to restore fundamental belief in THE SANCTITY of LIFE to America's conscience. Roe v. Wade--the most damnable and heinous ruling by our legal system since the Dred Scott Decision of 1857--remains bloody bedrock of a Silent Holocaust that has slaughtered 46,000,000 children in the womb. Abortion is the most polarizing issue that divides our body politic and has reduced a once-noble Democratic Party to a claque of radical materialists; secularists and in some cases overt Anti-Christians resolved to undermine the democratic underpinings that originally comprised The United States as "One Nation,Under God,Indivisible."

Judie Brown's personal story is moving, humble and faith-filled. She is neither a virago anti-feminist nor reincarnation of Savonarola. Its brief...pamphlet-sized...story of 140pp delineates answered call to discipleship in the SINGLE MOST IMPORTANT issue facing this nation since Slavery.Though the tone of her odyssey...as founder and President of THE AMERICAN LIFE LEAGUE...to save life is often sad,it is never despairing nor shrill.

Nevertheless: Mrs.Brown does not hesistate to call this singularly unique form of MURDER-AS-A-CIVIL RIGHT radical Evil it comprises and subtends. Key chapters of the book ("Matters of Opinion" and "Betrayal & Unity" p.117-125)forthrightly summarize stances of Pro-Life Vs.Pro-Death and the sly casuistry the latter have employed to convince so many that their complaceny has not made them complicit in mass murder. In his Second Inagural Address (March 4 1865), President Lincoln acknowledged grave evil of slavery and its Tribulation consequence in Civil War. No leader...outside of Judie Brown...has posited comparable measure of Justice wherein"for every drop of blood drawn by abortionist's curette, another may drawn with the 'sword'." The TERRIBLE SWIFT SWORD is not what any American would wish upon his homeland(as we reel under catastrophic hurricaines and rampaging conflagrations on our Coast). Judie Brown, like Sir Thomas More in another age of political chaos and duplicity,is Woman for All Seasons;a warrior for undefended lives of the Innocent and the Truth that their Sanctity ultimately testifies and comprises. IT IS I WHO HAVE CHOSEN YOU speaks this truth. I am proud to have met this woman through her work, and serve in The Cause she has been chosen to sustain against incredible odds and hatred. Friend or foe...wiseman or fool:Take and Read. (777 Stars)

Gee, I wish I could be in Ken's shoes..... as the great Geoff Witcher (The Sultan of Scores) said "What do you know about leaving the typewritter for hot television shoes to become a big league announcer" but despite that -- Ken hits a home run! Great for that baseball nut in your family. Instead of "let's play 2".... it should be "let's buy 2!" (of Ken's book)
