Best infant development book I've seen
Helpful Votes: 17 out of 20 total.

If you're concerned or inquisitive about your baby's development, you should have this book! Dr. Sears covers the physical, mental, and emotional develpments of your baby. Hundreds of cute pictures of his own baby. The reason I prefer this book over other infant development books is that the book's style is so "down-to-earth" and conversational, and the pictures help you see what's happening with your baby rather than just reading about it.

Will Appeal to Georgette Heyer Fans
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2007-01-14
From the dust jacket:
Jeffery Farnol has made early nineteenth-century England his particular province. Beginning with the famous "The Broad Highway," he has demonstrated his genius for recreating freshly and vigorously the lusty, brawling, stand-and-deliver days of the past. In "The Happy Harvest" we meet some old friends, including the loquacious Jasper Shrig, and make some new ones; and find the romance of Oliver Dale and the lovely Clia spiced with humor, and given tension by a mysterious murder which is solved by the astute Jasper, who also, on occasion, plays the role of Cupid.
"The Happy Harvest" is fine Farnol fare, a tale of a courageous hero, of a mettlesome heroine, of forest duels and moonlight escapes. Few writers in any field have so consistently maintained such a high standard of performance.

Harriet Becomes A Detective
Helpful Votes: 11 out of 11 total.
Review Date: 2006-06-19
In his last Harriet Bean book, McCall Smith reveals that Harriet has twin Aunts who are detectives. With Smith's bent toward detective stories it is little wonder he wasted no time creating one for Harriet. That is how the book starts off.

The aunts have found that there is something wrong with the horseracing business and the races seem to be fixed in some way. They need more information in order to figure out how it is being done. It must be done by the jockeys considering the high level security around the horses. And Harriet is just the right size to pose as a jockey.

Harriet has her moments of doubt and dread, but in the end, she does solve the mystery. Readers will find Smith using his familiar style and ethics. He notes that cheating is a bad thing and that people should not do it. The book is recommended for readers from 7 to 12 years of age.

A Great Read
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2008-06-22
Michael T. Lynch Jr, has crafted a very well written and thoroughly researched history of the relationships that shaped the first decades of American League baseball. He provides us with new insights into the often contentious dealings among the team owners, American League President Ban Johnson and Commissioner Landis. In so doing, Lynch clears up much of the confusion/myth surrounding Red Sox owner Harry Frazee, particularly with regard to the sale of Babe Ruth. This book is a must for the library of any serious baseball fan but will also be enjoyed by the general reader.
I look forward to future works by this author

This Book Is A Gem Filled With Glorious Painted Photos
Helpful Votes: 11 out of 11 total.
Review Date: 2005-02-16
This is a book that definitely belongs in the library of every baseball fan, especially if you were a fan during the 1950's. This book covers the years of the American League from 1946-1960. There is a text for each of the eight teams that were in the league during those years written by a different author. Some of the authors are Arnold Hano, Furman Bisher, Milton Gross, Frank Graham, Jr., Al Stump, and Dick Schaap in addition to an introduction by Rober Creamer entitled "Baseball's Golden Age." However, the outstanding part of the book is the pictures. WOW! Every picture in the book looks like a painting similar to those in the 1951 and 1952 Bowmans or the 1953 Topps baseball cards. The poses aren't necessarily the same, but the picture quality matches those cards. The photos aren't limited to star or superstar players on each team. Many average major leaguers that you will remember are illustrated in this book as well. There are also full page paintings of star and superstar players that overpower you in their beauty. Each team has over 20 pages devoted to coverage with the Yankees having approximately 40 pages. Each team has a story about one of their prominent players to begin the team's coverage, and a separate page is devoted to photos of the hitters and another to the pitchers. Throughout the pages of each team are the photos all painted in glorious color. You will especially enjoy this book if you were of age to be a baseball fan in the 1950's, because the book will bring these years back to you. I have hundreds of baseball books in my library, and this one will take a prominent place in my library. I do not exaggerate. Trust me on this one. This is a book that you need. Now we need a similar book on the National League from the same time period.

Excellent Book for Novices
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2006-11-21
This is the third book in the ACBL Series by Audrey Grant. The Club Series is on bidding and the Spade Series is on Play. This books assumes that you know bidding at least equal to the first two books. This book is not easy. It takes some thinking and study. It is a thorough discussion of standard leads, signals and defensive play. Anyone who is weak in these methods can learn from this book. It does not include other signals such as Laventhal and upside down discards. To learn about these you need to get Kit Woolsley's fine book on Modern Defensive Signals. Many more advanced books on defense are available including books by Root and Kantar but this book does a great job explaining defensive philosophy to novices.

Society does not want to know about suffering This emotionally, and caring collection of brilliant minds and open hearts will most likely stike the reader profoundly. It is a "must read" book. The Editors and authors are people with whom you wish you could meet. I've had this book on my shelf for about four years and decided that I must look into what they had to say. In a hearbeat, all of us can be switched from the healers to the wounded sufferers. This book is not to be unnoticed.

Great Statistical Analysis of Football
Helpful Votes: 12 out of 12 total.
Review Date: 2000-06-16
This book is an excellent read for anyone who has a genuine interest in football statistics. The authors are actually statisticians themselves, and they go through each phase of the game and attempt to come up with scientific ways to rate each position, including the offensive line!

The part I found most interesting was the chapter on quarterbacks and the conventional NFL QB rating system and why it is flawed. From there the authors go into a lengthy process of building a better rating system, which more accurately reflects who the most efficient passers in the NFL are.

You would think being written by a bunch of statisticians, this book would be dull, but it is far from it! It is lively and humorous throughout, and is very easy to read. Also, most of the heavy statistics are relegated to notes, so if you are not interested in that sort of thing you can skip it easily.

All told this is an outstanding book to read if you are interested in learning the "Nitty-gritty" behind football statistics.
