Young fans of historical fiction and of mysteries alike should find much to appreciate in this fast-paced, suspenseful novel. The jargon and atmospheric touches from the seedy East End of Victorian London are just right. The four resourceful young heroes (one female) are not stereotypes, but three-dimensional characters who find strength in unity. They pursue thugs from whom most of their elders would run away at the earliest opportunity. This book would make a terrific family-friendly motion picture. I'm looking forward to the sequel!
Deeply satisfying

I am a serious Sherlockian and very critical of most pastiches and parodies, so I was surprised to enjoy this book so much. The authors have managed to create a Holmes and Watson that do not insult our memories of the original tales at the same time that they evoke a realistic Victorian London. The youngsters who form the Raven League are believable kids who would be good company for a juvenile reader - if I were still teaching school, I'd be recommending this volume left and right. I hope there will be more to come.

Glen Waggoner's Rotisserie League Baseball should be the starting point for any serious fantasy baseball player's scouting report. For starters -- but I'm also talking relievers -- these guys invented the game!!! Filled with crisp writing that is not only chock full of essential insider's info but is also entertaining and funny, Waggoner and his group of supporting writers -- which include various Rotisserie experts like John Benson and Mark Batterman -- deliver what every Rotisserie player needs: the rules of the game, all of the stats you'll need at your fingertips on draft day, expert analysis and the wining strategies from the only book that can claim 18 years of roti-experience
This is THE book.

How else can I describe this wonderful cookbook! My husband is a military man, and we've entertained everywhere from California, to Germany, to Japan. Whenever I need a recipe that I know will please my guests, I know that I can rely on "Savannah Style". I especially recommend the sections on beverages and Hors D'oevres. It is easy to see why Savannians are renouned for their hospitality and the food which accompanies it. (The mint Juleps are especially refreshing for spring or summer entertaining.)

This is the best Savannah has to offer! It won the Southern Living Hall of Fame Award. The cover is beautiful and the historical vignettes that start each chapter are fascinating. There is a mixture of colonial and modern dishes. I even found recipes from some famous Savannah restaurants. Make sure you try the "Marinated Shrimp Monterey" and the "Peach Cobbler." Nothing beats the praline recipe.

I like to consider myself a gourmet cook. I have been a great admirer of Julia Child and even took a short class from her when whe was in Seattle. However, I like to explore new horizons and most recently I got "hooked on" The Junior League Cookbooks. During my travels I always go to the hotel gift shop (or airport) to pick up the state Junior League Cookbook. I hit the "Jackpot" when I bought Oregon's "Savor the Flavor." My girl's all own the cookbook and we write in each others book comments like Great, Fantastic...try this one. Today I am recommending it for my book study club. Close behind I would rate the two Seattle and San Francisco Junior League Cookbooks. As my husband said, "If you find one great recipe in a cookbook than it is worth the price of the book." Well, this is worth gold!

I love to amaze my family and friends with great food. My secret... "Savor the Flavor of Oregon." From great french bread to amazing pasta and awesome soups, recipes from this book are always a hit!! My only problem, my wife has caught on and not only is my secret weapon loosing its cover, but my friends are buying the book as well. If you can make a grocery list in advance and follow a recipe this book will make you a gourmet.

An excellent book about a truly different subject - baseball players that died before their careers were over. Many of the players featured are strangers to us. But just as many are, or were, household names. This is not a book about death. It's a book about the lives of these baseball players who had a personal side which were learn about. I recommend it highly.

While I greatly enjoyed "SHORTENED SEASONS", I read it at one sitting.
Though some of the players' ends (such as Munson, Clemente and Chapman etc.) have already been extensively reported on, I found the inclusion of those on the other side of the scale (such as the one-gamers) novel and
entertaining.
Other than realizing the picture on page # 152 of Elmer Gedeon had to be
that of Elmer's uncle, the banned-for-life, Joe Gedeon (in either 1913 or 1914, before Elmer was born) my only problem with the book was: I wish there were more of it.

A favorite of mine. My first introduction to this book was on a trip to Albuquerque many, many years ago. Since then, I have purchased 6 of these books and given 5 as gifts. Great recipes.
One thing that I particularly like about this book, which may be a surprise to some, is that not all the old fashioned *fat* ingredients have not been taken out of the recipes, and the book not entirely updated to reflect low fat "healthy" foods. I like to eat healthy but once in a while a good, old fashioned recipe with the yummy bad ingredients is just plain good. You can easily eliminate fats yourself but I enjoy the authentic recipes. I can modernize them myself.
Love this book.

and the patrons of colored baseball, to them I dedicate this book."
And what a book it is.
Originally published in 1907, Sol White is not just writing from a historian's perspective of the pre-NLB era, he was a major contributor as a player, manager and team owner on some of the best clubs from that era.
With an emphasis on box scores and photographs, the great teams, players and memorable games are chronicled in this 1996 reprint of the original book - with only minor editorial corrections - a supplement & additional articles by White and other writers. The original small run of copies was poorly printed and an end note explains the reproduction process for clarity.
A lenghty introduction by Jerry Malloy not only encapsulates the key areas in White's book, but provides a better understanding of a time when Jim Crow stepped into the batter's box of the professional game.
White was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2006. What he gave to future generations of fans & historians through the book is a grand slam.

When author Sol White was among the 17 people who were selected this week by the Baseball Hall of Fame, I got curious about this book of his. Until now, few people have known of it. Presumably and hopefully, the Hall of Fame selection will change this.
The book, originally published in 1907, was apparently the first major attempt at a history of black baseball, written by a man who was heavily immersed in it for many years straddling the turn of the last century. As a player, he appears to have been at least excellent and possibly great -- an infielder who played all four positions and hit in the .300's with fair power. White's commentary about himself as a player is very routine and modest; most of what we gather of his playing is from the lengthy introduction written by Jerry Malloy for the 1995 re-printing.
The original book is preserved and included in this edition. Much of that original edition was "non-text" -- photos, box-scores, and delightful print-ads. The text portion is full of fascinating detail belying its brevity -- and VERY well written. Much of it is a series of dry year-by-year accounts of what happened in black baseball, really exactly like what we see in the "mainstream" annuals of the period like the Spalding guides. But there are also some sections that are quite activist, getting into the segregation issue and the plight of the black player. Additionally there are interesting sections on hitting, pitching, and managing, some of the them written by other authors. This edition also includes copies of newspaper and magazine articles on black baseball from later as well as earlier years, including an article written by White in 1930 for the Amsterdam News.
There are many wonderful old photographs of teams and individual players, of a type rarely seen elsewhere. From the photos we see that the author seems to have had a strong resemblance to the recent player Chris Chambliss, which I mention just to help give a visual image of him.
Perhaps the Hall of Fame's selection committee gave Sol White some extra credit for his writing. If so, it was well deserved. Thank you, Cooperstown, for helping to bring this book back into view.
