Rube Foster-what an amazing man! Dr. Robert Cottrell's impeccably researched biography gives us insight into the evolution of an outstanding athlete, coach, manager, businessman, visionary, and co-founder of the Negro Leagues. In this book, we not only get a detailed look into the day-to-day life of a ballplayer (complete with box scores-balls, strikes, hits, walks, stolen bases, and outstanding plays). More importantly, we see the panorama of black ball (and white ball) in the early part of the 20th century as we barnstorm the country and Cuba with Rube and his various teams and teammates. This biography joins the pantheon of other works by Dr. Cottrell. In his earlier biographies of I.F. Stone, Nicholas Comfort, and Roger Baldwin, we saw sensitive yet balanced looks at strong-willed men in conflict with oppressive conservatism and prejudice in the areas of journalism, religion, and social injustice. Now, we are treated to the same spirited view of our nation's pastime and one of its unsung heroes. This book about Rube Foster provides us nothing less than a much needed revisionist's look at American history.

"From the archives of the National Baseball Library in Cooperstown, New York, here are thirty fascinating photographs of the players of the so-called Negro leagues. From 1897 until 1945, when Jackie Robinson signed a contract with the Brooklyn Dodgers, Black players were not allowed in the major leagues. So the Negro leagues were formed, with their own regional leagues that met in their own world series. This book of postcards is a lasting tribute to these legendary stars of baseball. 30 duotone photographs.
"Pomegranate's books of postcards contain thirty top-quality reproductions bound together in a handy, artful collection. Easy to remove and produced on heavy card stock, these stunning postcards are a delight to the sender and receiver. Note: postcards are oversized and may require additional postage. ISBN: 0-87654-943-1; size: 4 3/4 x 6 7/8"."--© Pomegranate

The Game That Meant So Much More

For twenty years, the East-West All-Star Game was a celebration of the outstanding achievements of some of the greatest baseball players ever, and so much more.
The idea of legendary Pittsburgh Crawfords owner Gus Greenlee to have a mid-season exhibition game quickly evolved into a major summer event - there was even fan voting for the starters in some years - with an atmosphere that I compare with college football's Bayou Classic.
Author Larry Lester takes articles, photographs, box scores, league records and other statistics mostly from the leading newspapers that served the black community to recreate the excitement and glory of the games. The book is also an excellent retrospective of the top media sources like the Pittsburgh Courier, Chicago Defender and Baltimore Afro-American.
At its peak, the game was one of the hottest tickets for any sporting event - though mostly ignored by the white press - where Jim Crow could not find a seat in the stadium. There was no prejudice or segregation; the contest was indicative of the openness found on the field, in the seats and within management of Negro Leagues Baseball.
The East-West All-Star Game was truly a showcase, on and off the field.

Bit by bit the obscure story of the legendary Negro Leaguers is being reconstructed, and books like this are playing a major role. Recounted here are all the East-West Games, the annual All-Star Games of the Negro Leagues, complete with boxscores, play-by-play, and contemporary newspaper coverage from the great African-American sportswriters & newspapers of the day. Finally those names from the dusty archives are being fleshed out into real players with recognizable skills. A superb reference. This is also a great companion volume to David Vincent's "The Midsummer Classic" about the (White) Major League All-Star Games, issued by the same publisher.

Bruch Basket is currently in its 5th printing with over 30,000 copies sold! Including over 600 double-tested recipes, Brunch Basket goes beyond cooking, with a section that shows clever uses of baskets, as well as recipes for edible baskets and entertaining ideas. The artwork on the cover and throughout the book is by local, nationally acclaimed artist Tom Heflin. Brunch Basket has been featured on NBC's "Today Show" and in Good Housekeeping Magazine. It's a MUST-HAVE for cookbook collectors and those who like to cook! (Try the quiche recipe on page 167. It has never failed me!)

I love to collect cookbooks from all over the country. I have found that Junior League cookbooks contain some of the best recipes highlighting the areas specialties. This is one of the better cookbooks I have bought and not just because of the beautiful artwork. The citrus chicken, spinach pie, and artichoke cheese dip are just a few of the recipes that I have prepared over and over. It is one of the cookbooks I grab when I need a good recipe and not just for brunch. It also contains some great Swedish recipes representing the large Swedish population of the area. A great cookbook for a gift and for yourself and the artwork of Tom Heflin is an added bonus.

Fran Shor's "Bush League Spectacles" is a must read for anyone who cares about the future of the United States and the freedom of its citizens. Shor clearly illustrates whose interests are being served by the three year wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and the corresponding "war on terror". George W. Bush, his and his father's cronies, and those fighting to spread the right-wing agenda are becoming more powerful and wealthy, while people continue to die in Afghanistan and Iraq. Meanwhile a growing majority of people in this country continue to lose their health care, their jobs, and their constitutional rights.
Shor explains how along with the power of the right-wing increasing, the U.S. has been being turned into a police state for over 20 years. Since 9/11 and Bush's declaration of "If you're not with us you're against us", the military and other government agencies have been encouraged to use extreme force in fighting the "war on terror". From the use of torture, to illegal wire tapping and recording of phone conversations, to harassing peaceful protesters, the right-wing government running this country has disregarded the rights of U.S. citizens as well as citizens from all over the world. "Bush League Spectacles" uncovers the lies and hypocrisies of the Bush administration, and demonstrates why the U.S. can not take two more years of this administration. Rather than spreading democracy, this book shows how the Bush administration has used spectacles to spread fear, terror, and disaster within and abroad. Shor not only explains this phenomenon and how it came about, but what we, as U.S. citizens, need to do about it.

I strongly recommend Bush-League Spectacles to anyone concerned about the state of national and global affairs. Fran Shor is a citizen scholar committed to an incisive progressive analysis of the times. This well written and thoughtfully arranged collection of political and cultural commentaries and essays published over several years is like having a pile of those articles we all tear out of magazines and newspapers to re-read at leisure, sure that they will retain their interest. Any reader who has not signed onto the movement to change the national motto from "In God We Trust" to "Trust Us - Just Pretend Everything is OK" will appreciate this book I suppose some will say he overstates the issues but then one realizes that this is a world where the Department of Defense is infiltrating the Quakers and uncovering the fact that they do indeed pose a credible threat of being pacifists (after 350 years of saying so) and spying on Vegans, one supposes for fear that they are potential slackers in the war on cows.
In reading this book I was struck by the scope of the historical connections he draws. Recalling the past to illustrate the present and giving at least some suggestions as to what the current trajectory of events holds for the future. As opposed to the juvenile truth-mongering, spin-doctoring and fact-smithing which comprises too much writing about current events and trends, he really seems to care about using reason in argument and distinguishing facts from opinion; presenting both with integrity and style. He assumes as valuable and good such old-fashioned ideas as the common good and the reality of the social contract, and he still writes with respect for the rule of law and the fundamentally American notion that no one is above it. His thinking suggests that the biggest threat to liberty comes from within, from citizens too entertained or alienated to attend to the public business and from a government which seeks to hold sacrosanct its prerogatives and secrets - especially the embarrassing one - above all else. In other words you would think he didn't know that everything changed after 9/11. Or could it be that he is not so much out of touch with the current message from the national bully pulpit but that he harkens to older and, we hope, more persistent sources of national character.
This is an invigorating visit with a veteran activist in peace and justice campaigns who is also a professor in the Department of Interdisciplinary Studies at Wayne State University and who has received a Fulbright Distinguished Scholars Award. Bush-League Spectacles merits a place on the nightstand, not just on the bookshelf.

Not only do you get fantastic recipes that you know will be a hit at your next party or family gathering, you're also helping further the cause of an organization that has done amazing work in the community.
