The Grey Book presents thought provoking material in a clear, concise manner. The ideas presented are sure to start many conversations and ideas concerning government and the how government should respond to the issues of our day. In my family, many conversations began with the ideas presented in the Grey book as we discussed them amoungst ourselves and friends. This is a book that truly provides Southerners purpose and drive with substance. I also see it as a useful blueprint for political thinkers looking for solutions to the red state/blue state differences. If you are looking for pablum, select another book. If your are looking for something that will challenge your thinking and enrich your life, this book is for you.

If you believe that the South is unique and Southerners a distinct people, then you should read The Grey Book. Published by The League of the South, the premier Southern Nationalist organization, The Grey Book lays out a blueprint for Southern independence. In doing so, it draws a sharp contrast between a future independent South and the current unconstitutional American Empire that has become despotic at home and aggressive abroad. The Grey Book pulls no punches. It is not for the faint-of-heart or the politically correct. However, Southern Patriots and traditionalists will love it. Review Date: 2007-03-08
We bought Hockey the NHL Way because my son plays inline /roller hockey which is similar to ice hockey except it is done on skates. This is an excellent book that simply and succinctly lays out the basics of playing hockey. There are conditioning drills, individual skill drills, how to play as part of a team whether it be on defense or offense, and gives strategies on how to apply these skills as a part of a team. Both beginner and experienced hockey players can benefit from Hockey the NHL Way as it is a good refresher plus builds upon individual skills a player might have already developed. It is a quick read and does not get too technical. Both ice and roller hockey players will improve their game by reading this book.

This is the best book I ever read! Marcos Breton is an amazing writer and historian. Usually, all you ever hear about is Babe Ruth and Mickey Mantle, but now we get to hear about Roberto Clemente, Fernando Valenzuela, and Jorge Posada too! Viva Baseball! This book is a valuable addition to any library.

Slices of daily life training and competing in this great sport, as well as the names and brief profiles of remarkable and dedicated people, comprise this celebration of baseball which is enthusiastically recommended for the fans of Latino players.

I was given this book years ago as a gift when moving away from IL. I have well over 40 cookbooks in my collection. This one is, by far, my favorite. All recipes are easy to prepare and each one has been a hit in our home. I LOVE this cookbook. In the past, I have purchased cookbooks by favorite cooks, only to be disappointed to find many recipes are out of the ordinary fare, which have gone over like a lead balloon with my children. I have yet to prepare something from this book, which my children won't eat. It is a true representation of midwestern favorite foods. The potato soup recipe is a favorite at out house.

It's a pity Abe Lincoln wasn't much of a gourmet. His hometown of Springfield had wonderful recipes. Honest to Goodness covers the gamut of the Midwestern dining experience. The soups and breads, like many of the main courses, service both everyday and elegant occasions. This cookbook is simple, appealing, and full of charming Abe stories to make it a great read as well.

Honest to Goodness is very true..........

Some of my favorites include.....Lemon Shake-Ups as seen at the Illinois State Fair, Steak Diane as served at Baur's On the Green, Funnel Cakes And the all time Springfield favorite... HORSESHOES... if you don't know what this is I urge you to buy the book for that recipe alone! You will love it!

Beyond the outstanding and absolutely timeless photography in this book, IN THE CAL offers unique and thoughtful information on the transformation of minor league baseball during the 1990s from a casual existence to a big-business adjunct of major league baseball. A must for any historical research on the minors...

Review Date: 1998-11-14
In The Cal is a successful photo essay which captures the spirit of the low minors. Unlike many books about the minor leagues which concentrate on statisitcs or a specific team this one is different. Tammy Lechner uses her camera to show the day to day existence of these young ballplayers. The beautiful imagery shows everything from "Bully the Bullpen Dog" a young puppy allowed to run through the outfield among the players, a ballplayer who has to wash the team's laundry, or a woman who brings baked goods to the players. This book is about more than baseball it shows a piece of Americana, the relationship which exists between these ballclubs and the fans who come out to watch them play. It is a must for any fan of the minor leagues.

Classic tales of teamwork, friendship, and justice
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2007-09-21
I held off buying the DC Archive editions for years because of the hefty price. Then I bought a couple used and I saw that they are worth every penny. At least they are worth it if you grew up with these titles. It was amazing how many of these stories (and specific panels) that I personally remembered after nearly 50 years.

Volume seven contains stories originally published in Justice League of America #51-60. The collaboration of Gardner Fox and Mike Sekowsky was still going strong (we thought that it would never end.) There were many guest stars making an appearance- Zatanna, Zatara, The Elongated Man, Hawkgirl, Batgirl (from the Silver Age), and Mr. Terrific, Hourman, Wildcat, Johnny Thunder and his Thunderbolt, the adult Robin (from the Golden Age.) It will be noted that the "go-go checks" at the top of the cover came to an end in this collection- as the super-hero craze that had started in '66 slowly began to fade.

These stories look better on the high-grade, glossy paper than they did when first printed- and much, much better than they look on old, yellow newsprint. The maroon leatherette covers (with the Justice League of America logo embossed in silver) are first rate- though I would never take the heavy, glossy jackets off of them.

Treat yourself to the age of true heroes.

Zatanna Leads Off This One...

Review Date: 2005-01-17
This is the top of the run of Mike Sekowsky's art, here is the Justice League in all its glory. Starting in Volume 8 we see a changing of art and writing styles as the line up changes. But for now we have the classic JLA line up.

The volume leads off with the wrap-up of the Zatanna storyline that wove its way through several DC titles in the 60's as she searched for her father (available as a trade paperback on its own-just do a search for Zatanna).

Good old silver age fun ensues with the reapperance of the Queen Bee, yet another Crisis and crossover with the Justice Society of America from earth two, and the League gets an assist from the newly minted Batgirl.

Issue #57 is reprinted which served up the well meaning (but sometimes heavy handed) lesson in racial/cultural tolerance "Man, Thy Name Is Brother."

It does not get any more fun than this. Get braced 'cause in volume #8 Dick Dillin takes over the artistic reins and the JLA would never be the same again.

After Pete had asked a friend & I to join his Bangor team for the Kalamazoo tourney in the summer of 1991, I really got to understand & appreciate the love that he had for Carter & youth sports. His book was truly touching, especially after he asked me to be a small part of one of those summers. I will always cherish the opportunity he gave me, as well as the autographed copy of this book. A must read for all baseball fans & parents.

A great book about dads, lads and Derek Jeter...
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2001-09-04
I cannot believe this book is out of print. I gave my copy to my brother several years ago, and went looking for a new copy today after the hated New York Yankees swept my beloved Boston Red Sox by scoring a whopping 6 runs in three games.
Why? Because Peter Gent's book - which is a wonderful tale about a father and his son getting to know one another - is also a prequel to the very public and successful career of Derek Jeter. You see, Derek Jeter starred on the Connie Mack team that Gent's son Carter played against for the Michigan state championship, and even back then, he was being viewed as a big-time up-and-coming baseball phenom.
And while some of the scenes between Gent and his son will tear your heart out, Jeter is front-and-center in the best sports scene in the book. That occurs when Mike Wyshowski(sp?), the farm-boy pitcher for Carter's team, whiffs Derek Jeter swinging with runners in scoring position late in the very close Championship Game, thereby sealing the win for the underdogs (and permanently endearing himself to me).
This is a wonderful novel. I read North Dallas Forty when I was just a kid, and thought it was a great, funny book. I thought this book, which I read after I'd gotten old enough to get married and have kids of my own, was much, much better. I'm assuming the fact that it's out of print means it didn't sell well. That's a shame, because it's every bit the story NDF was, and then some.

It captures the emotions of a parent letting go

Review Date: 1998-05-26
Although the divorce is pivotal in this story, it is not necessarily the key to the book's essence. Any parent who has reached the point of letting go can relate to the emotions the author so wonderfully describes. If a reader is an avid baseball fan, especially Little League, Pony League, Babe Ruth, etc., the story jumps out at you and transports you to that "magic" only summer youth baseball can take you. As the mother of three children, two who are finished with youth baseball and softball, and one still keeping me in the "magic" at the age of 13, I loved the book. Mr. Gent deals with emotions like unconditional love, fear, apprehension, regret and wins during that Last Magic Summer.

This is a gem of a book and one to be savored. I recommend you read a story and put the book down for a day or two before you read the next story. Every one of these players is worth reflecting on for a while before you dig into the next one.

John Nogowski knows and loves baseball, and has created a keeper for any sports library.

Great book about baseball's greats

Review Date: 2005-05-25
As a life long baseball fan who is relegated to watch major league baseball in a poorly constructed football stadium, where you lose sight of the ball the second the ball goes higher than the short stops head at the laughing stock of MLB, the Metrodome. I am naturally drawn towards reading baseball books reminiscing about a game where baseball was played outdoors on grass. The problem is there are just so many on the shelf it's hard to pick one to read. I came about finding this book by listening to the radio. One night, AM1500 talk show host TD Mischke conducted as usual another fantastic interview with that nights guest John Nogowski where he discussed this book. His knowledge, passion and insight about the game sparked my interest and I went out and picked this book up. It really is a fantastic book about the greats of the game, most of which I never got to see play.

It's really an interesting and unique look at the great players of the past where Nogowski focuses on their final games. Having always had an interest in Joe DiMaggio, because of his desire to have a perfect image, which made his final games difficult since he was not up to his usual standards of perfection. Also growing up watching Cal Ripken achieve so many accomplishments in the Metrodome when he came into town it really made a great read and interesting read. I can't recommend this book highly enough for fans of every age.

Lost Tales Of Baseball Giants

"Last Time Out" is a unique baseball book in that it captures some long forgotten moments in the magnificent career of baseball giants like Babe Ruth, Ty Cobb, Willie Mays and Ted Williams. Using newspaper accounts from the day, author John Nogowski finds a magical way to bring you back to those days of yesterday, so it seems as if you're sitting in a first base box seat as Joe DiMaggio rips a double off Larry Jansen or as Ty Cobb pinch-hits and pops out before a raucous Yankee Stadium crowd. Crammed with career statistics as well as the very last box score that carried the great players' name, "Last Time Out" offers 25 of baseball's greatest on the way out. Their very last time - out.

This is quite an imaginitive story. League will take you places you have never been and you will meet characters like no others you have met. Arax Kermani has a knack for telling a story and this book will not disappoint the young reader.
There is plenty of action for any reader. I liked the character of Xerxes and felt sorry for him because he seems lost, but he has a lot of inner strengths and convictions and I like that in a character.
This has a surprise ending so keep a box of tissue nearby.

I loved this book. It is a story about a teenager Xerxes who is raised by an avil man, Sin (who you like later on) and Xerxes goes in hunt of evil spirits which he captures in a jeweled sword. I didn't understand some of the foreign language used in the book but it made the story more exotic.
I was facsinated by all of the places he visited and the myths about them. There is plenty of adventure but be prepared to cry in the end.
I loved League of the Spirit Hunters and I think any teen will tell you it is a great story!

I loved this book. It is about a teenager Xerxes who is raised by an evil man, Sin (who you like later on) and he goes in search of evil Spirits and captures them in jeweled swords. Some of the dialogue written in another language was hard for me to understand but it made the book more exotic.
I felt a lot of emotion for Xerxes as I followed him on his journey but all he really wanted to be was an ordinary kid. The ending will make you cry so be careful when you read it.
All in all it is a really good book that any teen will enjoy.
