This book is easily my best rail book purchase in a longtime. The photo reproduction is supurb and railfans have not seen thesort of writing that is in this book since David P. Morgan died.

This book will probably not interest the rivet counter/roster shot takers, it centers on people, on heartfelt feelings, on the things that matter.

Highly recomended.

If you're not a fan of railroads and not a fan of photography, you will still enjoy this book. It's no secret Ted's been around, and to some places you wouldn't even believe. However with all these places it's hard to contain it all in a single volume, but Ted has done a wonderful job picking the best and his favorite photographs for the book. Thirteen lucky chapters detail his subjects with a flare and writing that goes down like a bottle of imported beer...nice and smooth! This book is a must for your home library!

"Must" reading for all railroad buffs!

I like how this couple presents their information. The book is full of useful data. I have purchased this in preparation for our journey to Alaska, British Columbia, Yukon and Northwest Territories. It does a superb job of helping you understand what to look for, where to look for it, how much things cost relative to other areas. Excellent job.

Having lived in the Pacific NW for many years I know lots of places for camping and RVing. I found this book accurate and very resourcefull. With rising fuel prices, we are all looking for closer to home places to "get away" and this book is a required resource to help find them, and determine their suitability. The only criticism I have is the way its organized. A little hard to find individual places since it is organized based on tour routes.

This is a beautiful book that both children and adults will love. My daughter 6 has brought it again and again from her school library. The story is realistic and one to which children can relate easily, they all love parties especially with chips, deserts and lots of fun, including their grandma. The illustrations details are breathtaking, absolutely wonderful, a true piece of art. Sentences are short and easy to read for your child, but also challenging. We also recommend the French translation. You will want to see more from the same author, just as we did.

Superb text on a vital topic- basics everyone should know

Personally, I think that we would all be better off if we spent more time in our education process teaching people about the realities of their economic lives. This is especially true of their choice of careers, managing those resources, and preparing for their "golden years". I could nominate a few topics I think we could cease teaching in order to have room for the necessary classes to provide people with real life financial management skills that can have a direct impact on the improvement of all aspects of their lives.

This book, "Personal Finance - Turning Money into Wealth" is a fantastic tool for students and ANY interested reader. I wish everyone would work through this book (or one very much like it). While it is never too late to develop these skills, the younger a person gets a plan for their economic life in place, the more power it has and the better off they will be long term.

I like the way Prof. Keown emphasizes basic principles (he has 15 of them) and planning. He begins the book by providing the foundation of financial planning, teaching the student how to measure their financial health and using that to inform their plan, understanding the Time Value of Money (a topic so vital that no one should graduate high school without knowing, in my opinion), and the basics of tax planning.

The author then provides some great information on managing money by understanding the realities of cash and liquid assets, credit cards (open credit) and the traps it represents, using consumer loans in PLANNED BORROWING (another important topic that is almost unknown to most consumers because of the misuse of open credit), and buying homes and automobiles.

I really enjoyed his next discussion on insurance. He talks about the various kinds of insurance, the kinds of protection they provide at what costs, and especially the situations in which buying insurance makes sense and when it does not.

The section on managing investments is good, solid, but BASIC information. Anyone doing anything beyond a few basic retirement plans will need to study other materials. This section is the one where I have a tiny quibble with the author. He differentiates investing and speculation by saying that investing involves putting money in assets that provide returns - stocks, bonds, etc - but that speculating is putting money in things like baseball cards that only have a price based on what others are willing to pay. I sort of understand what I think he is trying to say.

However, all investing is in some sense speculating. The buyer and seller have different views of the future (speculating about the future) and so they make opposite choices at a certain price. Either of them would change their view, presumably, at some other price. Stocks do not have a built in return and many do not pay dividends and too often nowadays their residual value is zero. Too often people buy stocks simply because they are going up (the greater fool theory) and get badly burned as we saw in the Internet Bubble collapse in early 2000. In any case, the caution the author advocates is sufficient and sound. I am just concerned that others use the terms "investment" and "speculation" differently than the author and might confuse those trying to enter the fray for the first time.

This fine text ends with a discussion of life cycle issues such as retirement planning, estate planning, and how all the pieces studied fit together into the grand plan.

The author also provides online helps such as problems, quizzes, and especially many useful spreadsheets that the student can not only use, but study to help them build their own that will be tailored to the student's specific situation. There is also a workbook with the basics of using a financial calculator and the worksheets called for in the text.

This is a superb text on a vital topic. Strongly Recommended for general readers as well as students in a class on this subject (which EVERY college student should be REQUIRED to take - or pass out of by test).

I confess an interest - I have skied to the North Pole with Weber and Malakhov. By contrast with the experience outlined in this book, however, my trip was a walk in the park - plenty of food, fuel and sunlight, temperatures above -25C and only 8 days on the ice. No number of words, or for that matter photographs, can even begin to describe the achievement of these two, or the hardships they endured. Weber described to me his experience on their (failed) 1992 attempt to get to the Pole and back as "being a frozen packhorse". There are no more experienced polar explorers in history than these two; they are surely amongst the most modest. For anyone who has romanticised over Peary, or even merely enjoyed an armchair read of the experiences of expeditioners, this book is mandatory. The prose is not perfect (and in large part translated from Russian), hence I have marked it down to a "9"; but this imperfection gives the tale an added air of authenticit

The North Pole is called "the place that wants you dead" for good reasons. Yet these two men are like the "Energizer Bunny" of Polar trekkers. They continued to walk for weeks, from drifting ice flow to ice flow, during the spring breakup while authorities wanted to declare them insane and force their air rescued. They resisted this by satellite radio, partially because they didn't want to pay the $100,000 cost! I am still stunned at the skill, determination and humor these guys displayed. They did what has always been considered impossible - but went about it like ordinary people who get up everyday and commute to work. They even referred to the ice as their "office" where they went to work every morning from their tent. The writing is very good, the achievmentranks as a worlds record, and the travelers are at peace with themselves and with life itself. They won my heart and sincere admiration

What an exciting and amazing story this is! Against all odds these very strong and tenacious adventurers have skied across a nearly impassable collection of mobile ocean ice to the North Pole and back under conditions of extreme cold - as cold as -72 degrees! All supplies for 4 months for this completely self-sufficient expedition were carried in backpacks and dragged along in sleds. Their pre-trip planning was so complete they knew in advance when every morsel of food would be consumed! That totaled enough for a daily calorie allotment was 7000 calories. To eat less would incur a dangerous loss of strength.

The book is well written and very exciting. It kept me riveted to my seat until I finished reading it. When I was done, I felt as if I had been part of the adventure - except I was still warm and comfortable, with no aching muscles!

I absolutely fell in love with this book and the sexy girl who wrote it. Talk about an honest portrayal of a life badly lived, CJ Sleez is candid about her former heroin addiction, her failed relationships and her many mistakes on the way to living life on the edge. There are other autobiographies out there by more famous people, but none as honest and gripping as this one. Highly recommended.

Poor Little Bitch Girl captured my interest with wide-eyed wonder. I couldn't put this book down for a moment and read it cover-to-cover the instant I picked it up. I learned a great deal of the troubles and triumphs of rock star CJ Sleez. She writes it all in a very honest way without ever falling into the trap so many other writers do of trying to make themselves look good. What an incredible and fascinating story!

Poor Little Bitch Girl and Sharon Osbourne Extreme good duo

I picked up a copy of Sharon Osbourne Extreme and Poor Little Bitch Girl by CJ Sleez when amazon had both books paired together. I hope this pairing happens again to encourage more people to discover these remarkable memoirs by two women who overcame adversity, tragedy and the crazy world of rock 'n' roll to make their own mark in the world.

To say Sharon had and has her hands full with Ozzy is an understatement. I have nothing but admiration for her ability to cope with the Black Sabbath years and with her husband's wild array of excessive behaviours while trying to raise something approaching a normal family.

Hanging out with the Rolling Stones likely didn't help put rising rock star CJ Sleez on the path to kicking her heroin addiction and tendancy to associate with the wrong crowd. Failed relationships and memorable concert performances also add elements of interest to Poor Little Bitch Girl: Unapologetic Memoirs from the Queen of Raunchy Rock 'n' Roll.

Both women have lived life to the extreme, with no excuses or apologies. Both books are the real deal and as raw as it gets. I highly recommend both Sharon Osbourne Extreme and Poor Little Bitch Girl: Unapologetic Memoirs from the Queen of Raunchy Rock 'n' Roll.

Lots of Practical Tips

Review Date: 2007-09-25
After reading many books on how to help my kids be more organized and do better in school, I found many practical tips in this book. It is interesting that a book by someone who is a professional organizer was more effective at helping my kids be better students than most of the books I read by people with advanced degrees in education and psychology. Basically, the author suggests setting up a system of age appropriate rewards for kids in exchange for getting tasks done on time. It is simple, but it works. I would also recommend the book Assertive Discipline, by Lee Canter and Marlene Canter as another good book with practical advice on how to get children to get chores and homework done on time.

This was the first book of Rita Emmett's I experienced. What a gift! My adolescent son is now in the saddle following directions - now - right away. There are many gentle ways to end putting things off from your kid - and this book is a great tool. It was my first reading of Rita's books. Then I actually experienced one of Rita's seminars. She is a great teacher, effective and fun, a terrific value. Also this author lets non-profit organizations use this book as a fundraiser. I am looking into that for one of my actions in fundraising. Rita Emmett's website has details.

Parents are increasingly concerned about how well their kids
Helpful Votes: 17 out of 18 total.
Review Date: 2002-10-27
Parents are increasingly concerned about how well their kids are performing. There are two strong motivations for this attitude. First, we parents want our kids to be better than we were . . . or at least give them more opportunities. Second, we know, as adults, how fast the world is moving now. If our kids put things off, the opportunities may pass them by. If you're a dedicated parent today, you may well be facing the challenge of a child who procrastinates just a bit more than you'd like to see.

Who better to write this book than the author of "The Procrastinator's Handbook," a book that has made quite an impact over the past two years? Emmett digs right into the subject in a highly readable style Allow me to quote from the introduction, where the author best describes what you'll see. "The teen who puts off sending in his college application might procrastinate because it has become a habit (chapter 1). Or he may not have learned any self-motivating skills (chapter 2); he may feel overwhelmed by all the papers to fill out (chapter 3); he may hate this type of task (chapter 4); or he may feel he doesn't have time (chapter 5). He may be waiting for a whole day free of interruptions so he can do it perfectly (chapter 6), or have some fears and anxieties about going away to college (chapter 7). He might not know where all the forms are because they're scattered all over his desk, bedroom, and locker (chapter 8), and he may be so swamped with other activities that he can't focus on this task (chapter 9)." Chapter 10 is Hope for the Future.

The author emphasizes some points we must consider as we begin to read-and use-this book. Children hate having ideas forced on them. No single theory or technique works for every child. Children don't always think and act the same way you do. [You should have seen the way my teen-ager rolled her eyes when I showed her the book I was reading!]

Your head will bob up and down as you read through these pages. Yes! Yes! But, what to do? Not a problem. The book is full of advice and counsel, including "Ideas to Discuss" and "Ideas in Action" at the end of each chapter. They're presented as a teamwork process; this is something you do WITH your child, not TO your child. The Tips call-outs enhance the value of this volume.

This book is small (5.5 by 8 inches), but powerful. You can make a difference with the knowledge you gain in these pages-for your child and for yourself.

Incredible Quilt Project is Testimony to the Power of Having a Deam

This book is a testament to the importance of textiles and the power of dreams. In 1994, Esther Bryan (who is not a quilter) went to Slovakia with her father who was returning to the village where he grew up for the first time since WWII. This trip profoundly affected her art, and she created an exhibition entitled "Return" made up of the stories and of the textiles that she and her father were given while they were there. The response to her exhibit by other immigrant families led her to realize the universal nature of her family's story, and she conceived of the Quilt of Belonging as a way to express her concept that every person is "an equally valued part of the tapestry of life." I had the privilege of seeing this 10 foot tall by 120 foot long quilt at the International Quilt Festival in Houston last year, and it was both incredibly beautiful and incredibly moving. Containing 263 squares representing 71 aboriginal groups and the 192 nations of the world, this quilt contains an incredible parade of textile gifts. The book describes the story of the making of the Quilt of Belonging, completely through volunteer efforts, and then devotes a page to each of the squares, telling the story of the maker of each one and the symbolism of the textile techniques that were used to represent that nation's people. It is an amazing project. Sales of the book support the travels of the Quilt so that more people can experience it in person.

When you see it you can't possibly read all the stuff on each peace, so I was really glad to find out that I could purchase this book through Amazon. It was also less costly and I did not have to carry it back all the way from Houston. I also bought this book for my mother.

I had the joy of seeing this 120-foot long quilt in Houston last week and I got to meet and speak with the artist/author. I bought the book. The book is wonderful. The story of how this project began and the many amazing things that happened along the way will touch your heart. The idea that we all come from some place and that place is deserving of honor is expressed in quiet dignity within each block of the quilt. In the book you see the faces of the people who created the quilt. Just Wonderful.

Being slightly biased (knowing Gail Hunt quite well and my mother,Pat White, being one of the artists in the book) I suppose that I am not the greatest critic for this book. Nonetheless I find this book to be beautifully and artistically put together. It is wonderful that someone finally took the time to recognize individual artists and their vastly different styles and techniques. Definately a two thumbs up!
