Unrivaled depth into a key part of the South African anti-apartheid movementReview Date: 2008-07-24
From a full description of the beginings of the Christian Institute, Walshe depicts a constantly hounded organization coming into the broader struggle against apartheid. The book's greatest gift is a description of how the Christian Institute itself changed its mission as it became clear the future of South Africa would rest in the hands of blacks rather than white liberals.
One of the author's talents is his ability to paint a picture of what almost was. History, for Walshe, isn't simply a writing of revolutions that happened. History is made up of almost accidental success and failures that were more (or less) significant than their results might indicate. As Walshe traces the Christian Institute's repeated struggles against the apartheid government he often records failed efforts rather than spectacular successes.
For anyone interested in the South African experience, or in the reality of long social movements this book is a must. Also, for those interested in the practical application of contectual or liberation theology, this book is highly recommended.

Irish People taking their place in HistoryReview Date: 1999-01-07

This book should be compulsory ready for every Anglo-Saxon Australian (Skips) Review Date: 2007-09-17
This book should be compulsory ready for every Anglo-Saxon Australian (Skips) and then they should all hang themselves with shame for what they have done and are doing to the Native Peoples of Australia. I feel so sorry for the Native People for the genocide and atrocities committed on them by the British Descendants of Convicts. But the "Skips" are an ignorant race of people. I should know, as I had the misfortune of living amongst these Convict Decedents for 40 years.

Iona - Port of FaithReview Date: 2000-02-09
Book Review of: "Iona - God's Energy," by Rev. Norman Shanks Reviewed by: Ellis E. Kell, Jr.
Iona Community leader Rev. Norman Shanks captures not only the elusive essence of the sacred island of Iona, which draws an estimated 120,000+ visitors and spiritual pilgrims per year, but even more importantly provides a clear and comprehensive understanding of the Iona Community's mission and vision. Rev. Shanks points out that many come to Iona mistaken in their belief that it is synonymous with the total community, only to find that the community proper extends far beyond the shores of St. Columba's legendary island off the western coast of Scotland.
The message and focus of the community's work is one of social action and world peace through a global, ecumenical community of faith. The book gives us clear insight into the Iona Community's focus on cultivating vital new relevance in worship for today, and sails far beyond the horizon of some of the more popular approaches to individualistic and escapist spirituality.
The Iona Community promotes a '24/7 faith' - one that permeates all facets of personal and public life, day in and day out. Though the destination of Iona, the island, is one of unmatched serenity and incomparable peace for the traveler, the Iona Community can become the port of departure to a challenge of true faith, sharing and right action for the spiritual pilgrim in today's world.

The Missing Link in Irish HistoryReview Date: 2006-04-30
during 1870-1903. An employee of the Royal Irish Academy, Mr. McGee uses a high level of European scholarship and research
seldom seen in the USA anymore. Perhaps his greatest contribution is the fair assessment of Irish opposition to Parnell--never researched before. Mr.McGee also delves into the Fenian Brotherhood of America and Clan-na-Gael, showing the importance of American funding to the IRB. Highly Recommended--breaks new ground!

Elliott begins with a history of violent and secret organizations, discussing Nazism, the Ku Klux Klan, and the Ludites. He goes on to cover modern European terrorist organizations such as the Red Brigades and the Bader Meinhoff gang. He then takes us into the world of for profit criminal organizations such as the Gambino Family and the Columbian drug lords. The final chapters explore cults and magical practices like Vodoo. All in all makes for great reading. I am surprised this book has not been more popular.
