A very easy read and a step by step tutorial. I ordered the book before buying the software assuming the degree of difficulty was high... if I had to do it over again I probably would have waited because the manual is pretty thorough.

I use the classroom book as a reference whenever I get stuck...

Joint Application Development is, in my opinion, one of the most powerful tools available to analysts and consultants for capturing business requirements directly from the source - the business process owners and subject matter experts. This book is among the best I've come across on the subject and is worth the time and effort to track down.

What I most like is the way this book stays consistently focused on discovering (and uncovering) *business* requirements to be used as the foundation of information systems and applications. The book itself is divided into ten parts, each of which builds on the other to form a coherent approach to conducting JAD workshops and using the product of the workshop sessions as input into the requirements process.

Parts I through III introduce JAD, its underlying concepts and how they relate to business processes. Part IV provides guidelines for developing a business solution, while Parts V and VI guides you through the actual techniques and procedures that will be used in the JAD sessions.

After this point the book quickly picks up the pace and goes directly to the heart of JAD by showing how to capture the business vision and manage changes from the sessions as they [inevitably] occur. It's interesting to note some of the parallels between the approach in Part VI and the Microsoft Solution Framework (MSF). If you are using the MSF this book will add value to your processes because in many respects the approaches are either the same or complimentary.

Parts VIII and XI wrap up the JAD process by thoroughly discussing requirements and specifications, which are the two main products that JAD workshops are designed to capture. The rest of the book is devoted to skills profiles for workshop leaders, an implementation checklist that is invaluable, and excellent advice. I particularly liked the workshop templates, which will greatly aid you in setting up and conducting JAD workshops, and the way that the author guides you through the pitfalls that you will encounter when facilitating these workshops. Follow Mr. Crawford's advice and the time spent in the sessions will be used efficiently and effectively. Follow the approach in this excellent book and you stand a good chance of capturing the right requirements, and ensuring that they are validated by consensus of all stakeholders.

Christie Scott is a successful businesswoman as well as a Certified Life Coach with specialized training geared towards coaching medical doctors. She also holds Advanced Certification as a Human Behavior Consultant and her presentations have helped the careers and practices of hundreds of medical doctors around the United States. Scott has now published a much-needed workbook manual focusing on the business side of operating a medical practice with her Against All Odds: Conquer The Healthcare Battle.

Scott begins with the premise that unfortunately many medical doctors suffer from exhaustion, burnout, and lack of quality time with their families-something that they did not plan for when they entered the medical profession. Part of the blame for this can be attributed to the fact that medical doctors are quite clueless when it comes to opening up and operating their practices, managing their employees, and maintaining profitability.

For the most part, medical schools devote very little or no time to the business of operating a medical practice and thus it is no wonder why medical doctors are very often poor business people.

However, with this excellent guidebook fear no more, if you are a medical doctor and are intimidated by the business side of running your practice, Scott's workbook manual has come to your rescue with concrete strategies and solutions that will provide you with an effective game plan, as long as you heed her advice, complete the various questionnaires and create action steps in order to implement the various suggested strategies.

Crammed with dozens of tips and suggestions, the book's compact 172 pages are conveniently divided so that each chapter presents an examination and exploration of a specific area of the business side of a medical practice.

Beginning with with one of the most important steps, taking stock or where you are now and how you plan to implement change, Scott explores focusing on one's ambitions. Her approach is that one should not ask why is something happening but what can be done to effectively improve the operation of my practice.

From here Scott next tackles fear, which is one of the great barriers to change. Scott provides solutions as to how to overcome fear when contemplating making changes. As is the case with all of the chapters, there is a series of questionnaires that are vital to complete even though they may feel uncomfortable or time consuming. Remember the old adage, no pain no gain.

Another section of particular interest to doctors is the one dealing with combating battle fatigue where, as Scott astutely remarks, "if you suffer from the symptoms of extreme stress or burnout, then the practice will immediately start to suffer!" Readers are presented with the top ten ways you know you are burned-out and what to do about it.

Employee turnover is always a factor in running a profitable medical practice, and as with the case of any business, these turnovers can prove to be very costly in time and money. Scott examines in this section the reasons for employee turnover and how to change the situation.

In the chapter devoted to effective communication, Scott reviews the ramifications of employees that exhibit poor communication skills and even sometimes rudeness. What does a doctor do about these employees? Does he or she fire them or does he try to have the work together as a team?

The final chapter is devoted to coaching and why one is important in the acceleration of personal and business development. As Scott points out, coaching focuses on moving you forward in your desired direction.

Refreshingly free of business jargon, clearly laid out, and well written, Against All Odds: Conquer The Healthcare Battle may not be the last word on profitably managing a medical practice, however it is an excellent starting point. Scott's presentation is informal with an easy to follow conversational text offering countless tips and sound advice. Probably the chief value of the book is its many questionnaires, which must be completed in order to reap the full benefits from the book. These aids are wide in scope and admirable for their practicality and relevancy to the abundance of material that is presented.

I may add that although the book is aimed at the medical doctors, there is no doubt that it will prove quite beneficial to anyone managing a professional practice as attorneys, accountants, dentists and others.

Tuesday's game was great! It was so phat. I think the blazers are ill. The best part was when pippen sunk that 3 to win by 1. Bryon Russell was gaurding him but pippen faked him out and launced the long range 3-pointer from way downtown.Pippen was throwing excellent passes 2 his teammates. Stoudamire was outstanding. He was scoring 3's every 5 seconds. The book deserves 5 stars.peace.e-mail me at caseyc@adelphia.net ,or casey@krazymp3z.com , or pimpflex88@hotmail.com .e-mail me.my sn is pimpflex88 . bye.

Great motivational memoir!

Barry Krauss' memoir captured and held my attention throughout. I wouldn't compare Krauss in either the areas of memoir writing or sports writing to Mitch Albom, but I doubt Mr. Albom could participate head-on in a goal line stand and live to tell about it--much less write a book about it. So, after we take the likes of Mitch Albom out of the equation and look at Ain't Nothin' But a Winner on its own merit, I can easily say that I found it to be a well-written, compelling memoir. After all, it's not every football player (turned writer) who can come up with descriptions such as "Alabama again came within one single puff of Coach Bryant's unfiltered Chesterfield cigarette of winning two national championships...." That's nice imagery. That's writing that keeps me reading.

Beyond looking at the book from a literary standpoint, the story and the message within the story make this book stand out. Krauss recounts his career in football with humor, with touching sensitivity, and with frank honesty. From high school through his years in professional football, Krauss gives the reader a rare inside view of that world. As he says, he lived the life many dream about and he's appreciative of the experience.

I'm not an avid football fan, but this book pulled me into this life devoted to the team and the game. I felt the tug of the ups and downs players and fans rejoice in and suffer from. The highlight of the book, of course, is Krauss' recounting of his years playing for Paul "Bear" Bryant on the University of Alabama football team. The climax is the one play-- the Goal Line Stand, on January 1, 1979, in the Sugar Bowl game against Penn State--where Krauss stopped Penn State's Mike Gunman from scoring. Football enthusiasts will enjoy Krauss' description of the play that stopped time. While reading that section, I felt the crack of helmets and came away with a better understanding of football fanatics.... (reviewed by Lou Belcher, freelance writer and editor)

Interesting read about a man who started out in a life of crime, alcohol and drugs and turned around and helped many in his old neighborhood who suffered from the same problems. He did it all with soccer (or football in Scotland). His team only includes former drug addicts. A great story.
