"What Giants They Were" is a fond look back at the New York Giants. Those folks most likely to enjoy WGTW will remember when one specified "football Giants" when referring to that franchise! The tale recalls a very special time for this reviewer: He can well remember taking a short subway trip to Yankee Stadium and purchasing a bleacher ticket-the day of the game. Price: $2.00. He could buy a game program, a coke and 2 hot dogs and still have change from a Lincoln! For the 1963 season, this reviewer bought a season ticket in the bleachers. Price: $28.00! The actual games, it should be mentioned, were played on real GRASS! By November, the green grass was gone, changed to beautiful brown dirt! The Giants owned New York in the Fall. People paid attention to basketball and hockey-but not until Winter. The Manhattan-centric Giants WERE New York sports. The players became small gods, helped by the fact that rosters were stable in those pre-free agent days. The defense, anchored by #70, the great Sam Huff was virtually unchanged from 1956-1963. The team appeared in 6 NFL Championship Games in that span. That they lost the final 5 of those contests did not cost them a single fan. Those Giants were the pinnacle of franchises in a time that can never be recaptured. The memories of the old Giants are enhanced by the brutal fact that living in NYC was, to put it mildly, vastly simpler then. Author Whittingham has dutifully interviewed 20+ former players and coaches. "Someone" on high was cooperating with the author! The very names tell the story: Huff, Gifford, Rote, Webster, Conerly, Katcavage, Lynch, Mozelewski, Robustelli and Summerall. Those unable to instantly supply the relevant first names to those titans of the past will not fully enjoy WGTW. Homage in passing is paid to the Parcells/Simms era but they are blessedly outside the scope of Whittingham's tale. Those guys do not belong here! In fact, the author goes farther back than forward! Space is devoted to guys like Red Bagro, Benny Friedman, Mel Hein, Tuffy Leemans and Ken Strong! In addition to his strong research, the author has provided some of the sharpest and most personalizing photos this fan has experienced in any sports book. Many readers take typesetting for granted, or suffer silently with it, but in WGTW the work is excellent! The production values are very high indeed. Other attractions are sections on some of the men's college days and the trials they endured as rookies. Sam Huff was on his way back to West Virginia when assistant coach Vince Lombardi collared him at the airport! There is also a section on "life after football". Most of WGTW is positive. The only dirt spilled is Sam Huff's latter day rant about his trade to the Redskins after the '63 season. That was his due; his trade was the dumbest move in the life of the franchise. Sam was the heart of the team; the Giants took nearly 20 years to recover from his untimely departure. If there is a weakness to WGTW, it lies in what is NOT revealed. Some unaddressed issues might include: 1) How did the team let assistants Vince Lombradi and Tom Landry get away in favor of a guy named Allie Sherman? 2) What about the intra-Mara family squabbling? It had to be serious but never made the press. 3) What was behind Kyle Rote's sudden retirement after the '61 season? 4) Why didn't a Mara stop the Huff trade? And on a lighter note: 5) Why on earth did Allie Sherman allow backup quarterback Glynn Griffing to skip practice the entire week before the '63 championship game against the Bears? Couldn't his wedding in Mississippi have been postponed a week or two? And what ever happened to the heir apparent QB after his woefully brief performance in that game? This is first class sports reporting! We may term it pure nostalgia, but to so is to bestow a compliment. Looking backward is the crux of WGTW. This review won't deduct a star for the limited scope. The strengths vastly outweigh the "weaknesses" of a limited audience and the aforementioned unaddressed issues. We should treat WGTW like an old Hank Williams CD. Don't fret that they don't make them like they used to. Let's enjoy pleasant memories as they are handed to us.

Pittsburgh Pirates fans have suffered through an agonizingly extended season of discontent - one that encompasses fourteen consecutive years of losing more games than they have won. As October approaches, we watch the excitement that other fans in other cities experience, and watch our team hang up their spikes and go home - again. We wait for next year - a next year that never comes. As if we were in a bad dream from which we cannot wake, it is all the same, year after year; one excruciatingly long nightmare season. It's enough to drive a man to drink!
To keep off the sauce and chase away the baseball blues, I picked up `When the Bucs Won It All', the story of the 1979 World Champion Pittsburgh Pirates. It proved to be just the right tonic to put a smile back onto my face. The book was a quick read - it does not dwell endlessly on a game by game, blow by blow recreation of the season, but hits on all the memorable highlights. One thirty-four page chapter covers the regular season, and forty-six pages are devoted to the post season. It is not exhaustive coverage of that championship year, but is really all that is necessary to trigger the great memories in any fan that lived through it. Like any good baseball book, it includes a good selection of black and white photos and plenty of charts of statistics as well.
The bulk of the book is taken up by biographies of the players who made up the Pirates' "Family" that magic season. Every player who was on the Pirates major league roster at any time during that season, as well as the manager and coaching staff, is covered. A brief history of their careers prior to the '79 season is given, a recap of what that player did during the '79 season and post season follows, and finally, what they did and what became of them after 1979 is related. Some of these bios are loaded with interesting information. For both Bert Blyleven and Dave Parker, the authors explore their respective cases for possible enshrinement in The Hall of Fame. In relief pitcher Enrique Romo's bio, they talk about his mysterious disappearance from Pittsburgh and baseball after the 1982 season, and the rumor that he had a relationship with a woman involved with a mob figure who told him never to return. To date, Romo has never appeared at any of the '79 Pirates reunions or autograph signings. I found this section most appealing, and more interesting than a simple blow by blow recreation of the season.
Any Pirate fan who remembers "the Family" and that magical '79 season will enjoy this book. It may have a broader appeal as well for those interested in that era of baseball, as it provides a snapshot of how the game was played at the dawn of the free agent era, when relief pitchers were first coming into prominence, and the game was in a major state of transition.

Mr. Baumer has taken what could have been a very dry topic, and turned it into a wonderful interesting book. He took so much care in writing this, in gathering information from folks that were involved with the town teams, we get to hear amazing stories that other wise would have dissapeared forever. I reccomend this book to folks from Maine interested in a part of their state's history, and I also reccomend it to baseball history buffs everywhere.

If your interests are the same as mine - minor and semi-pro baseball history in New England - then this book is a must. It is a real gem and Mr. Baumer is to be congratulated on such a fine effort. It is easy to see that it was a labor of love for the author. He covered his subject well, mixing his stats and his oral histories to just the right degree.
My big hope is that the author continues his research and writes a second volume, one that covers the same subject for the pre-Second World War era.
Of course this book will have a limited audience; that being Maine baseball fans and then possibly more hardcore baseball historians, say from the Society for American Baseball Research (SABR), an organization to which I belong.
It is sad that most best-selling baseball books have to be about Ted Williams or Babe Ruth. Afterall, how many of those do we really need? It is the efforts of people like Mr. Baumer - the people who are really capture baseball history in its purest form - that deserve the real praise.

Thank you to Tom Haudricourt and his team for putting together this fine book for the Brewers' 25th Anniversary. I live in CA now, but back in '82 I was 11 and hailed from West Allis, WI. I remember being glued to the radio listening as Bob Uecker made the call during the last moments of the ALCS.
Great stories, great stats. A good read.

There are certainly faults with "Where have You Gone '82 Brewers" but, if you were a fan of Harvey's Wallbangers, this book is just what you would want it to be. All of the 1982 Brewers of any particular note (29+ individuals) are interviewed in this collection focussing on what it meant to be a Milwaukee Brewer in 1982. I'd explain just why we are talking 1982 but then, if you don't know what happened to the Milwaukee Brewers in 1982, you likely wouldn't be interested in this book. Brewer's fans, on the other hand, know all about the World Series year and the come from behind victories that ran out in Game 7. They also know about this unique collection of baseball players who made the game look as fun as it ever got. I left Milwaukee in 1981 in the midst of the Strike. Only "the job I always wanted" was able to pry me away from Milwaukee County Stadium before the eventual World Series that we knew this Brewers Team was destined for. I paid plenty to get the daily Milwaukee "Journal" out here in North Dakota. My phone bills sky-rocketted while I called friends back home to turn up their radio so I could hear the last inning of a close game. The loyalty and adoration that these guys received from their fans was enormous. "Where have You Gone '82 Brewers" lets us know that the players understood that. It is clear that they knew that they were on a special team. A Team that all claim was a unique experience in their Baseball career; no matter how long or short it was. They all talk about the special cameraderie that existed with that Brewers team and their fans.
The problem with "Where have you gone '82 Brewers" is the author's apparent need to restate the events of that year; having to win 1 out of 4 in Baltimore and loosing the first three, loosing the first two games of a best of five series and having to come back, having a lead late in the 7th Game, etc. These items seem to need an explanation in each interview. It reads as though these were a collection of newspaper articles published seperately from each other. Yet these events would be hard not to acknowledge in most of the interviews. There was an agonizing admission by Brewer's 7th Game pitcher Pete Vuckovich that he had been haunted for years by his failure to win that game. Despite a pitching shoulder that was already immobilized by a torn rotator cuff (another oft-repeated item), Vuckovich made it throught the end of the season by guts and brains alone. Yet he was ashamed to face his teammates over this "failure" of his. There are many other revelations in this book that will also interest the rabid fans (like myself) by letting us know what path their lives took after 1982. A lot stayed in Baseball but it is still interesting to hear their journeys. (A few years ago I discovered, at a Diamondbacks game in Phoenix, that Robin Yount was their First base coach. I was disappointed to discover that his coach's jersey was not available at the souvenir shop. "But he's the best guy on the team", I pleaded to no avail).
This book is heartwarming to those who treasure that special relationship with that team. It will be boringly repetitive to others but they MAY come to discover just how special that team, that city and those fans were to each other.

Great for Brewers fans and all baseball fans alike, this book captures the essence of the blue collar Milwaukee Brewers of 1982. What a great way to honor one of baseball's hardest working teams. It is great to see where these guys are now and to read some of their stories from their great run to the AL pennant. Simply terrific!

For me, this book is not about the battle against illness but rather the power of creating a TEAM to create the REALITY we want in life. There are two ways to get love in this world -- ask for it and give it. This book helped me to really be clear on my purpose, put out to the world what I really want, enlist the assistance of others in meeting that goal, and continue improving my life and others I come in contact with through my efforts. I cannot recommend it highly enough. Dare to live as someone who was "dying" teaches you! I have been on my own personal journey of transformation predicated by major conflict with a teenage son. We are both deeply involved with creating a better world for ourselves and others. What a ride!
A must read for Cancer warriors and survivors.

When you sit across a big wooden desk from someone in a white labcoat who says "I'm afraid it's bad news" and advises you to get your affairs in order, your next move should be to pick up this book. Mr. Stone's uplifting method of taking on The Big "C" is an inspiration for those of us who share the journey. If you haven't started your own "buffaloe herd" yet, you will! Thank you, thank you, thank you to Bob and Jenny for this manual on survivorship. This book is worth an "out-of-print" search.

Very nicely done update of Whittingham's THE WHITE SOX: A PICTORIAL HISTORY from the 1980s. Most of the original is featured here, along with wonderful entries picking up where the first book left off. This edition features a fantastic collection of photographs spanning White Sox history from the franchise's beginnings at the turn of the 20th century up to the mid-1990s. Major kudos here for providing one of the first published Hall of Fame tributes to White Sox legend Nellie Fox, who in 1997 finally gained enshrinement among baseball's elite in Cooperstown. This edition also includes a foreword by "The Big Hurt", Frank Thomas as well as an introduction by beloved Sox favorite Minnie Minoso. Overall this is a handsome volume that all White Sox fans would be proud to display on their coffee table.
A Bible for the die hard Sox fan.

This book is a great one for catching up on the Sox' history throughout the eras. From the Black Sox to the Go-Go Sox to the Big Hurt. It contains almost everything a fan would need to know and would want to know. It did not include all the great players career stats but does with a few. Overall, a thick book but a great and easy read.
