I found this book in the university library to give me some better ideas to help me with the at risk and mental handicapp students I work with as an intern PE teacher. This book has helped me out greatly come up with some great ideas and activities to use in place of the typical gym lessons.
This is a book that I highly recommend as a reference when working with special needs students. It gives a very good base for sports through different kinds of activities, as well as helping writing lesson plans out.

Great book!!!

Jerry Poling has done it again!

In the tradition of "Downfield" and "A Summer Up North...," Poling doesn't only let us poke our head in and take a look around, instead, he lets us tag along with him and go inside to see what's happened to some of our favorite players. While his writing makes you feel like he's sitting with you and telling you his story, his vivid descriptions will make you feel like you are at training camp and that Donald Driver just whizzed right past you. Or that you are sitting on the couch with Wayne Simmons' mother as she talks longingly about the son she misses so much. This one is a necessity for any Packer fan or anyone that wants to know what happens to the heroes after the lime-light fades.

Enthusiastically recommended for any Packers fan

Written by editor and columnist Jerry Poling, After They Were Packers: The Super Bowl XXXI Champs & Other Green Bay Legends is the true story of the 1997 Superbowl champions after they left the Packers. Some returned to ordinary lives; some tragically fell victim to powerful internal demons. Filled with career highlights and behind-the-scenes glimpses of the world of professional football, as well as a handful of black-and-white photographs, After They Were Packers is enthusiastically recommended for any Packers fan curious about what became of the ultimate winning team.

I purchased this book because it provides a quick and dirty run down of the different forms of media one can use to draw a picture. In the first section of the book, it talks about the tools you can use: graphite, colored pencils, pastels, ink, markers, charcoal and sanguine-just to name a few. It also tells you what type of paper goes best with each drawing material as well as the type of eraser is best to use. There is a section value and modeling, as well. The next couple of the sections deal with techiques that are specific to each medium. For example, coloring by strokes and blending charcoal and pastels with fingers and stumping pencils. In the sections on techniques, step-by-step exercises are provided to demonstrate how the author got from a blank sheet of paper to a replication of a famous work of art done in that same medium. However, during the demonstrations (I assume in the interests of brevity and page space)he may skip a little too much. This may not bother some people, but I'm a "I follow the recipie to the letter" type of person when it comes to something I don't know how to do. In spite of that I still rate this book 5 stars for several reasons: I like they way they show you pictures of the tools and tell you what they are and how to use them (for example, my high school art teacher said under no circumstances to smudge with my fingers for shading--he mainly said to crosshatch. As a result, I had no idea what a stumping pencil was and that my fingers were capable of such nice smudging.) Secondly, I like the way the book mentions some of the top brands for different media and shows what some of these sets look like. And thirdly, despite the flaw in the exercises, it was still fascinating to see the transformation. (I haven't done one to completion as I've only had the book for two weeks and I wanted to read through it first.) After reading the book, I know what materials I need to get started and I have a manual to help me practice.

I've always been pretty good at basic to intermediate graphite sketches and I wanted to take my drawings to the next level. If you're a beginner or an advanced beginner, then this book will probably help you. If everything I have written here is old hat to you, then you should probably look for something more advanced. As I said this book is a quick and dirty break-down of different drawing media and their techinques. It does not attempt to give in depth information on all media and the techniques associated with them.

Peter Robertson worked with us in the office of the CEO for the HP/Compaq integration. Though we had a high performing team with piqued strengths in leading large scale horizontal change, he helped us understand how the makeup of the team needed to change as the charter changed. Against typical instincts (why change what's working) we consciously supported some departures and refashioned the team for the second phase of organization effectiveness, after initial integration was largely complete. We also used Peter's approach to advise our own internal clients on how their teams needed to change to accomodate expectations that became apparent in the press 6 months later. His thinking and tools were a major quiver in our value to HP at an unprecedented period of change.

A fresh, new approach to how people respond to change, individually and within organizational settings. Ethology, taking in Freud and Bolby's work, shows how it is not consequences, but security and "attachment" which will predict and help in the management of personnel.

The catchy title takes in one application of this method and tool, that the composition of any team, whether athletic or organizational, is dependent on where the organization is on the "S"-curve or business cycle. For instance, if you are trying to innovate new ideas or products, you need exploratory people versus those attached to stability. On the other hand, once new products have been identified and created, you want more stability-oriented people who will stick to the plans and schedules to get the product out the door.

Very good examples from actual application at HP and other major organizations.

What a spectacular trove of forgotten baseball and Cincinnati history William Cook has given us inside this wonderful and beautifully researched book!
One need not be a baseball fan to appreciate the wealth of forgotten American history contained in the pages of this book but any self-respecting baseball fan will be in awe of William Cook's ability to cull interesting and unknown bits of fascinating baseball & social color from our common lost past.
I highly recommend this biography of August "Garry" Herrmann, once Cincinnati's most famous citizen, and I look forward to Mr. Cook's next book on famed Cincinnati bootlegger George Remus.

August "Garry" Herrmann A Baseball biography.
"Just completed the book and found it great reading. The combination of sports, history and politics in a fast paced anecdotal style made for all the ingredients of a great story. I learned a lot and began to realize that as far as the Queen City is concerned, the more things change the more they remain the same. Just some of the characters. But we have all the same ingredients to keep us mired in the sludge of corporate welfare. Instead of the subway we have the banks. It if were not for petty politics we in Cincinnati might have a great public transportation system and maybe we would have had less of a decline in population and status as a major city. As far as August Garry Herrmann is concerned he probably did more for baseball and the city than Powell Crosley, Bob Howsam, Marge Schott and Carl Linder combined. I got the impression that although Herrmann tried to put the Blacksox scandal behind him it really did a lot to blemish and downplay his historical significance. Also the anti- German hysteria of the 1st World War did not help matters either Anyway I enjoyed the book."

Forget NASCAR - Bring on the Open Wheelers !

Review Date: 2007-01-19
For those outside the loop of racing, NASCAR garners a great deal of attention. Lost in all the attention paid to that series is a great style of racing collectively known as "open wheel" or "Champ Car." The series has evolved over the years but one thing has always remained. The races are fast, exciting and very competitive. How exciting? Put 800+ horsepower in a 1,600lb car that stands at knee level and enjoy the fun! If you are a fan - new or old - this series from Autocourse is a must-have. Autocourse started doing yearbooks 40+ years ago for the Formula One Grand Prix series and they have grown to include Champ Cars. They offer a tremendous amount of detail about the teams, drivers, cars, technical advances, etc. They also showcase the support series and the up-and-coming drivers in them. Each race is covered in detail with all qualifying times and finishing spots as well as highlights of the event itself. Photography is 100% incredible. That's another point. I enjoy doing my own photography and sometimes it's easy to lose track of things, especially if you don't get the film developed for a while. This book offers tremendous resource materials for someone maintaining photo albums of the events themselves. Basically, if you have a question about this style of racing, you'll find it in this book.

The Start Of The Retro Era In Stadium Construction
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2006-09-29
The era of the modern "retro" ballpark for professional baseball started in Baltimore. Author Peter Richmond does an outstanding job weaving the history of the city in sports with the movement to design a new ballpark for the Orioles.

It also ushered in an era where public-private partnerships through tax dollars and other incentives became the means to new facilities. Richmond aptly shows the controversies that follow pro franchises when team owners & league representatives sit at the table with politicians, along with the oftentimes very loud public opinion being heard through the door.

There is a hidden gem in the history, and it concerns Art Modell, the move of the Colts to Indianapolis and the Cleveland Browns. Richmond writes that Modell wanted to move the Browns to Baltimore after the Colts fled the city in the midnight hour, and wanted to time the move with Cleveland receiving an expansion franchise.

The plan - that never got past the idea stage - was years before Modell moved the club to Baltimore and the book was published before the Browns did move to the city.

Books such as Ballpark may unfairly receive the tag of interest only for a reader from that region. At the time of its publication it could have been read as a news story. The text has held up well over the years and now a reader has an excellent history on how the era of baseball stadium construction got started.

A fascinating look at every conceivable aspect of the building of Camden Yards, from the political and legal fighting and the Orioles' crucial demand for and use of design oversight to the farm where the grass was grown. If your community is considering building a ballpark, you'll find the book interesting.

As a Yankees fan I thought I would HATE this book. But I was drawn into the stories behind each of the Yankees failures. The author does a terrific job of combing Baseball facts and his humorous perspective through the eyes of a Yankees hater surrounded by Yankees fans.

I recommend taking a serious look at "Banned in the Bronx: The Yankee Hater Memoirs 1953-2005" whether you are Yankees fan or just cannot stand them. Good read! A must for Red Sox fans!!!

I have ordered this publication for the past three years and find it a terrific resource on all major and minor leagues. i travel extensively and use this book to tell at a glance where the home team is playing. I would highly recommend this resource for the true minor(or major) league fan. Great book!

Great book! So useful that I totally wore out the binding!

Review Date: 1997-02-26
This book is the only one of its kind that I know of. It contains schedules, ticket info, ballpark addresses and directions, phone numbers, and lots of other great stuff for every major league team and most minor league teams. It's perfect for the traveling baseball fan who might be interested in catching a few games while on the road. It's small so it's easy to take along with you; it's well organized so it's easy to find things; and, as far as I can tell it's 100% accurate. It hasn't let me down yet. My only (minor) complaint is that it's not a very rugged book. I got so much use out of mine last summer that I totally wore out the binding! All in all, it's a wonderful book. I can't wait for the 1997 edition to come out so I can help plan some trips for next summer.
