I've read Star Team Dynamics and am convinced that it is one of the best resources on teams and team-building available. The book is full of examples, how-to advice, charts, etc. The author relates accounts of companies who have gone "through the fire" and have come out the other side -- healthy, well-functioning teams. She also tells what NOT to do. The book is well-written, humorous and informative. I highly recommend Star Team Dynamics.

Though she doesn't get to do much, Ensign Hoshi Sato is my favorite character on the new Enterprise. She was left out of the first series of figures, but here she is finally, albeit encased in a bulky spacesuit.

Her facial sculpt is a decent likeness. But, like all these Art Asylum Trek figures so far, it seems to capture the features, but not the expressions, sorta like a "dud" photo. Better than 95% of the figures this size, but just close enough to leave you wanting better.

The articulation is excellent. She can stand in different positions no problem, and her hands hold the props from this series great. She's held onto T'Pol's communicator through some pretty demanding missions. Her removable air supply pack (not shown in Amazon's photo) fits on perfectly. The helmet detaches from it, again perfectly.

I would have preferred Hoshi in her uniform (or maybe in her decontamination outfit ;), but this is such a nicely done toy I can't complain.

A lot of books have been written on the 49ers' great Quarterback Steve Young but none is as deep in details as this one. It is entertaining, absolutely interesting and (i would say) formative because it teaches about how fulfilling our dreams, heading in the good direction...I loved this book.

The best available book on Steve Young!

This book is informative and brilliantly written. Unlike the other books on Steve Young that I have read -- books which often rely on "angles" about this man's life -- this book is an honest and compelling account. It's writing is tight and detailed. I loved this book.

Very Insightfuland Well-written.

I read this book when I became a Steve Young junkie while at BYU. I am still at BYU, and still a S.Y. junkie, but at least now I know a lot more about the man. The authors of this book seem to have gotten close enough to the protagonist to show some of the most private aspects of his personality. I got a truer sense of who Steve really is, what he believes, and why he comports himself the way he does. Apart from being well-written and chronologized, the book provided a lot of back-ground kowledge with regards to Steve's football career, starting out with his college experience, as well as some of the challenges he had to face in the AFL and NFL, right up to the point where he led his team to a superbowl victory during the 1994 season. It also invoked a lot of compassion in me for Steve Young, because one only has to read the book half-way to realize that the path he had to travel to success was not an easy one. It has inspired me in many ways. I would recommend this book not only for people who are interested in the 49er Quarterback, but also for those who don't favor him that much, or who don't really know a lot about him. For those of us who will never meet the guy, this is the closest we will ever get to his inner-self, to understanding where he's coming from, and perhaps, eventually understanding Steve, the man.

Best Basic Project Management Book for Product Development

I've read a number of project management books over the years, and very few of them fit at all in a product development environment. This book fits and matches product development very well. In fact, in my opinion, it is the best basic project management book on the market currently for application in product development. This shouldn't be a surprise though since Mickey Rosenau understands project management practice in the field of product development. Beware of the other authors who claim that they understand product development and then apply a traditional approach to project management. Project management in product development is different, and a traditional approach to project management doesn't work in product development. Stay away from the traditional management approach and get this book instead.

The Photographs Make The Book
Helpful Votes: 17 out of 17 total.
Review Date: 2004-07-09
There have been numerous books written on New York baseball, but, at least for me, it is the photographs that make this a unique baseball book. I have vivid memories of the World Series of the 1950's, and all except 1959 involved at least one of the teams in New York City. The New York Yankees and Brooklyn Dodgers series were classics, and will always be remembered. I enjoyed the descriptive writing of New York Daily News writer Dick Young. When Duke Snider made a wide turn at 3rd base in coming home, Young wrote, "Duke, who is a poor base-runner for a man of his superior speed, took the scenic route home...He was out by some 20 feet." Many of the photos brought back the names of players and umpires of my youth. The photographs illustrate how small the dugouts were in that era. Fans are predominantly dressed in suit coats, ties, and fedoras. Also of interest are photos of fans leaving the park via the playing field, and photographers near home plate photographing the action. Photographs of Ebbets Field and the Polo Grounds show views from above the playing field in addition to close ups of the center field area of the Polo Grounds and the center and right field areas of Ebbets Field with the advertising on the wall are also of interest. I am a fan of the Detroit Tigers, but I will always have precious memories of those historic New York teams in addition to the arenas they played in. The text is nice, but it is the photos that make this book unique.

Brings back a great era in Baseball!

You don't just have to be a fan of New York baseball to enjoy this wonderful photo-filled book showcasing the great Big Apple teams of the late 1940's to the late 1950's. This wonderful book containing superb photographs from the baseball archives of the New York Daily News, is like a mirror through time. The large photos, (dont you just hate small photos in large books), showcase the players, (stars or not), stadiums, but above all action surrounding the great New York teams of 1947-1957 with a small but no less interesting text explaining each one. The most enjoyable thing about the book for me were the full-page sized photos showing all the action in ballparks, some unfortunately no longer with us (Ebberts Field and the Polo Grounds) and the pre-renovated Yankee Stadium. The nuances of these parks with their crazy outfield angles and advertising boards gives us an appreciation of what it was like to play or watch baseball in them back then. The shots of the fans who populated these parks also tells a story, of rabid fan allegience and spirited optimism. Any baseball fan will love this book as part of their collection. There is a brief text opening the selection of photos for each year that may be short but this book let's the photos do the describing. A fabulous book!

I really enjoyed this book. I head about it reading a review in the Wall Street Journal. When I first saw the phrase "the business of baseball" in the title I was fearful. But this was no review of accounting ledgers. It was instead a lively tour though the history of baseball with a focus on its most successful, and colorful team. It debunked many myths that I always carried around in my head (e.g. that my beloved Red Sox sold the Bambino to finance a play), and constantly got me thinking about the role of baseball in society and society in baseball. I thought it just as good in discussing free agency and the labor agreements of the last few years as it was covering the early history of the game. The author had a point of view, but it didn't get in the way of a clear and objective telling of the story. Best of all, it was just fun to read.

Being a die-hard Michigan fan, it's hard for me to admit that I enjoyed anything with the word "Spartans" associated with it. Based on a strong recommendation from a friend of mine, I decided to give this book a chance. I am very glad that I did. It offers a collection of wonderful stories masterfully written by two men who followed this team's every move through the 1978-1979 basketball season. Stabley and Staudt are then able to track nearly every member of the team down 25 years later for their own recollections of what was truly a "Magical" season. A must-read not only for every Spartan fan, but for anyone who appreciates the triumphant nature of the human spirit. I can't wait for the sequel: the story of Rumeal Robinson and the 1989 Michigan Wolverines!

A must for all true Spartan fans as well as basketball fans. The book comes out 25 years after the Spartans' 1979 NCAA championship season and is comprised of many short stories dealing with the players, coaches, media and fans from that season. The stories include the battles the coaches went through to recruit the MSU players including Earvin "Magic" Johnson. It's interesting to see where all 13 players are these days and what they've done in the last 25 years. The battle between Michigan State and Indiana State changed college basketball forever and the book touches the memory banks of those who played in the game. It's a fun read and enjoyable for fans of all ages.

In the world of sports, leadership is one of the major keys to success. Team leaders are often the difference between successful and unsuccessful seasons. The Team Captain's Leadership Manual is essential to all coaches and athletes looking to achieve success in sports, school, and life. The Team Captain's Leadership Manual is filled with surveys, assessments, and questionnaires designed to measure if you possess the skills needed to be a leader, and how you can build upon those skills to become a better leader. Different people lead differently, which author Jeff Janssen recognizes in this book, yet he also establishes the several attributes that most good leaders share--commitment, composure, determination, and an ability to inspire those around them.
Every aspect of leadership is covered in this comprehensive manual, which makes it an unbelievable resource for both players wanting to increase their leadership potential and coaches looking to improve the way their players work together as a team. What's also great about the Team Captain's Leadership Manual is that it is backed by those in actual leadership positions, with quotes, examples, and ideas from famous and well-respected coaches and athletes. The Team Captain's Leadership Manual gives an exact step-by-step process on how to lead by example and ways to become a more vocal leader, with an emphasis on encouraging your teammates, building team chemistry, and managing team conflict. I recommend this book for all college and high school athletes, coaches, and athletic departments who want to develop responsible and effective leaders. As an athlete and a team captain I recommend this book to anyone who is looking to improve any aspect of their leadership skills.

This is perhaps one of the most important books I have read as a coach. It was very concise and offered excellent suggestions. It was written to I could relate and the players will be able to relate. I am going to implement this book as a preseason tool to better develop leaders and team chemistry. This book will be very thought provoking and bring alot of things out that normally wouldnt have been thought of.

The step by step process is excellent and really makes alot of sense. Jeff Janssen did a great job with it, I just wish it wasnt so expensive...

I know how important leadership is to the success of any group and yet I didn't have a methodical, clear and consise way of teaching the players/leaders on my team what it takes and what it means to be a leader. I used this book extensively this past year and it is the first time that I felt our team leaders had the information they needed to be effective....and they were! Jeff's book will be used by my program as long as I'm a coach.

Review Date: 2002-04-03
This book offers a terrific balance of "principles and practicals." I found the author's grasp of workplace teams and their purpose (as well as when not to use them) to be very "real-world." As a seasoned corporate trainer, I am always on the look out for impacting resources, and this definitely tops my list in the Team-Building category. If you are new to workplace teams, or a veteran team-builder, you will find real gems in this volume. Ms. Payne uses an easy-to-follow format for each chapter: introducing the idea, discussing its value, giving concrete examples, and, most important to me, providing a template to get you started using the idea in your workplace situation. She even includes an Appendix with all the major tools and ideas laid out for overheads. This book will be helpful to HR personnel who need to provide guidance to team leaders in their organization; trainers seeking fresh ideas and tools for their team-building offerings; and managers who are looking for the practical steps one must take to create and sustain a high-performance work team. In this era of workplace collaboration and cooperation, The Team-Building Workshop, is a welcome resource for anyone trying to achieve more with and through others!
