If you are interested in this story, please do yourself a favor and get the audio book. He is "reading" it himself. I put reading in quotes because he is so engaging that you feel like you are old friends swapping stories. This is the most intimate biography I have ever been exposed to because he draws you into each and every story. You can hear the pain or joy in his voice. You will not be disappointed with this one.

Wonderful, funny, deep and educational.

The book on CD was one of the greatest gifts I have ever given myself. I have been a fan of Sidney Poitier for years, but never knew his background. He is truly a man of integrity and I really loved hearing him read his story. I purchased it for a friend and I am sure she will enjoy it too.

Absolutery amazing!

Bought this for my father. Found out as he opened it that he had read it, but he said he wanted to listen to it anyway. Lo and behold, would you believe in the next few days he was looking for excuses to go for errands to listen to Poitier in his car? I have rarely made such a perfect gift purchase for my dad. I have listened to it as well and plan on buying it for myself. POitier's voice is simply amazing to listen to.

Twenty Six Stories Of Tragedy And Hope
Helpful Votes: 13 out of 13 total.
Review Date: 2001-05-07
Mr. Simon J. Ortiz's work, "Men On The Moon", is a collection of three earlier groups of his short stories. The tales are not just of contemporary Native American life but also of their History, and specifically their History with the, "Mericano".

The History of Native Americans cannot be written without the experience of loss, displacement, internment, and racism to mention just a few. The Native Americans are one of the Genocides that this Country is responsible for, and even though we who made read this History took no part in the atrocities, we also are the only ones who can make amends. Those responsible, the dead, are not terribly productive.

These stories are not complaints nor are they a cry for pity. They are each brief statements of fact that no matter how tragic maintain a sense of hope. Justice, fairness, acknowledgement of the crimes committed against them are perhaps some of the redress they illustrate/seek.

The book is not grim; it is full of irony, sardonic moments, and even humor. The short story that is also the title for the book is wonderful. An elderly man muses about the first information he sees on viewing his first TV. A series of questions follow with answers from a younger family member. If NASA had to answer these questions as put forward by this wise old sage, the groping for answers would be amusing, and the space program would be doubtful. I don't believe the Author was actually questioning the merits of the space program, rather illustrating how easily things may happen despite failing the most basic of queries.

There are stories of heroic service for the United States during her wars, and too there is a story of one man that went to prison rather than serve. I mention these as I found this book very balanced. This is not one Native American's list of complaints, rather a reasoned and balanced view of their History and what that History has wrought.

The book is great reading that communicates its message in an informal conversational way consistent with Native American Culture. It loses nothing to the extent its format is not structured in the traditional manner of, "scholarly", History. Nonetheless this man is a wonderful writer, a poet, role model, and eloquent representative for his people.

When I read this book, Simon Ortiz's voice came from the pages. Simon Ortiz writes like he speaks and his stories are rich and beautiful. As a student of his I have had the unique opportunity of hearing many of these stories orally, but they have not lost their beauty and depth being written down. If you like this book, check out Simon Ortiz's poetry. You won't be disappointed.

Both my 2 and 4 year olds will sit through these books in the evening and keep going back to them as their bedtime picks. The 2 year old loves to learn the character names and laughs at their expressions and is relaxed for bed by the end. It's the only story book he'll sit and listen through end to end.

Daniel San Souci has authored another wonderful book. My 3 and 7 year old children both adore his work. The story is engaging and his illustrations are vibrant and captivating. We had ordered this book long ago and it was well worth the wait. His books always remind me of the magical "adventures" I had in my youth and they give my children inspiration to create their own.

If you only could have one general reference book on antiques, this one should be it! For antiques collectors and dealors, this basic referece book is easly to use and contains a great deal of information on many subjects. The section on rugs and carpets is a great starting point for dealors, and the section on furniture is clear, concise and easy to use. This book is a must for beginners!

My 7-year old son has difficulties reading -- a problem not helped by the fact that so many of the books written for his reading level are geared toward 4-year olds. As such, getting him interested enough in any book to struggle through to the last page was, until Mission Ziffoid, a chore. But with it's everyday conversational style, kid-builds-his-own-spaceship-and-encounters-silly-aliens theme, great illustrations and direct, repeated hits on my child's funny bone, Mission Ziffoid was the first book to motivate him to WANT to read. For us, it was the "breakthrough" book, a true turning point. I strongly recommend it to anyone looking for that magic key to opening a child's interest in reading.

Wonderful escape into a past world

Cunninghame Graham is a superb observer and writer. In Mogreb-el-Acksa, published in 1898, Graham describes his attempt to cross the Atlas Mountains and reach the forbidden city of Tarudant. However, he was detained in the mountains for four months by the Kaid of Kintafi, and ultimately turned back to Marakesh. The places he visits and the people he meets come alive, and a current of humor bubbles throughout the narrative. His observations on western vs. eastern cultures, in many instances unfavorable to both but usually funny and profound, apparently made the book unpopular when it was published. I recommended the book to two friends, one a world traveller, the other a Moroccan. Both loved it.

Cheryl Duran has created a useful compendium of the horror field for the neophyte and the seasoned fan alike. Written by a true fan of the genre, this book is a fun overview which includes movies, TV, comics and toys. It turned me onto a couple of vintage movies I had never seen and sent me scrambling to my local video store to check them out!

The Monster Club.com's guide to horror is great fun to read! It really captures the spirit of why I love horror. I've loved monsters and horror films since I was little, and I have a huge collection of books dedicated to horror. What sets this book apart from the rest is the tone. It's obvious that the author is a fan of many of the same films I like, and her enthusiasm is contagious. Instead of taking a clinical approach and analyzing topics or films to death, she takes you on a fun whirlwind tour of many facets of the world of horror. Highly recommended!

A Beautiful Book of Photographs

Review Date: 2007-10-08
This picture book covers diverse themes. Poetry is interspersed between the photographs, and there is a section in the book which gives brief biographies of the women photographers of this book.

A section on humans includes the Tibetan man, Yi woman, Kuna woman, a winter solstice celebration, mountain monastery, and a ghost town. Most of the book, however, is centered on nature. There are photos of Monument Valley, Arizona, autumn reflection in a waterfall, minerals such as sandstone, etc. Plants photographed include the fleabane, sunflower, white spruce cones, and the flowering crab apple. Animal photographs include the African elephant, impala, bald eagle, python, elephant seal, and the lion. There's even a photo of a spider web with a captured fly.

Buy it if you can find it. Awesome photographs.

For nature lovers or photography buffs, I highly recommend that you purchase this book if you can locate it anywhere.
