No food stylist here, real food cooked and shown by a chef who by the photos and the opening of each chapter loves what he does and cooks from the heart. I have many cook books being a fan of food and chefs and those TV chefs pump them out, doubt if they even write them on thier own.

By reading this book, cooking from it I can tell that it is a labor of love from a chef who truly cares, I did not know such top cuisine was served at private clubs as well.

I am use to this with books fom Europe so it is great to see a Amercian chef have so much heart and the ability to ceate good tasting food with flavors that make sense.

This chef rocks. I have attended two of his lectures and demos with class mates on cooking and food. He has so much passion and love for what he does. He said to us in his class I cook with water I do walk on water we are here together to share and learn from each other with a simple thing called food. The man is full of talent, love for his craft and this book shows all of his. We love you chef!

Many recipes, I enjoy all of the day parts as many good books forget we eat breakfast and lunch at times. Many recipes complex but others simple and full of flavor. No doubt much passion and care from the author in regard to his craft. The forward if people read such things written by another chef is one of the best I have seen and really captures the author and what he is about, well done. Great photos and the chef displays a knack for plating and displaying food he should do a book just on this subject. It is a must book for the culinary libary.

As the international director of the campaign to stop one of the dirtiest oils in the world from perpetuating the American oil addiction (i.e., tar sands oil from Alberta, the second largest oil reserve in the world), I'm constantly reading books on coal, oil, and global warming. This book by Michael Brune is one of the first that I've read that is actually a pleasure to read (despite the subject matter). Michael's writing style is crisp with active tense, great little vignettes, and a little humor thrown in to keep you from getting depressed. Each chapter contains the juiciest and most relevant facts, great examples of what other countries or industries are doing to end the fossil fuel habit, and very specific ways to learn more and take action. I highly recommend this book! Michael Marx, Executive Director, Corporate Ethics International.

Coming Clean hits all the right notes. In his first book, Michael Brune meets the challenges of a climate in crisis and an imperiled environment head on. Brune offers hope to those feeling helpless and overwhelmed by climate change and our global addiction to fossil fuels. More than just another primer on the most urgent environmental issues of the day (though it fills that niche effectively), Coming Clean offers easy steps that any citizen can take to help usher in a clean energy economy.

Coming Clean isn't another environmental treatise accessible only to the academic elite. This book is for the rest of us. Every chapter engages the reader by putting a human face on complex issues ranging from oil and coal to biofuels to building a safer, more efficient mass transit system.

If you ever wanted to make a difference but weren't sure how to get started, pick up a copy of Coming Clean and create an environmental legacy you'll be proud to leave to the next generation.

"Coming Clean" offers real solutions to our current energy crisis. It should be required reading of ALL corporate CEO's and politicians. If only we, as a nation, would heed the warnings and act on the sound advice offered by experts, we could lead the world in use of clean energy and in making the billions that would be connected to the new industries created. I will be leaving this book out for any of my guests and friends to see and comment upon.

Finally, a realistic and hopeful approach to climate change

I thoroughly enjoyed Coming Clean! Michael Brune writes about complex issues of climate change and energy in an accessible, engaging way. The book is chock full of information - it clearly presents the problems we're facing, but it doesn't make you feel hopeless. Brune tells fascinating stories with an insider's view of past activism to stop major corporations from destroying our environment, as well as stories of regular people taking action in their communities. Every couple of pages, I found myself jumping out of my seat to share something with my boyfriend or whoever happened to be nearby at the time. I love that every chapter gives you things you can do right away to address the issues raised in that chapter. It's a very empowering and affirming read!

Coming Clean is an important book that is a really great read for anyone who wants to understand why America is addicted to oil and coal, and more importantly, learn how people are fighting for a clean energy future that will be good for our country, our economy, and the planet as a whole. Even more importantly, you'll learn about many ways you can get involved and be a part of the solution yourself.

I really liked Coming Clean's focus on vision and action, combined with its hopeful tone giving a sense of what is possible and plenty of inspiration and tools as promised on the cover. I started using the Take Action and Resources sections before I even finished the book. I also found there to be a lot more useful nuts and bolts and thought-provoking information and statistics in this book than other more challenges-focused books that tend to be overloaded with less essential info (and that for me usually start to feel onerous around the halfway to 2/3 mark).

In contrast, Coming Clean is lean and focused with clarity of purpose. There's great use of humor and engaging stories of people making a difference that make it an enjoyable, quick read. But once you are finished, you will likely be inspired enough to return to it often to utilize its many tools for taking both individual and collective action.

I couldn't put this book down. Wonderfully written to capture the adult, teen, and younger generations. Although you might think going back in time is a stretch to overcome in your mind, by the time I got to that part, I was hooked. Suspenseful, mysterious, educational, and just plain fun to read. I look forward to reading more of Mrs. Ritt's works. This is an especially great book for kids. She made real history come to life in a very sneeky way. Kids won't even realize until it's too late, that they are actually reading a lot of real history joined seemlessly with fictional fun. Loved it.

Historically accurrate and wonderfully ingrained with the fantasy that resides in most of us....what if... . Imagination and determination, courage and more are conveyed to the reader as something innate in these children. A wonderful adventure that bridges cultural and ethnic differences to show what we are meant to be ... each for the other. Also a great tool to integrate history and literature in elementary and middle school.

My youngest grandaughter (12years old) came home with this. Reading isn't her favorite time consuming thing in life but she began spouting off all of these history facts that caught me somewhat off guard. I inquired about her recent knowledge find and she told me about this book and how she thought it was so fun to read. Naturally, I then had to have one for myself. I couldn't hardly put it down. It was a fun mixture of Paul Revere, facts about him that I would have never known and a group of kids finding themselves forced into using their skills and witts to get out of some pretty tough situations.
I'm 56 and it just goes to show, no matter what your age learning can still be fun.
I hope Mrs. Ritt gets to read this because I would like to thank her for her efforts to bring this story to life.

Fond memories of reading this as a boy

I remember being drawn into this book as a young teenager. The writing was outstanding. It sat on my bookshelf for a few months before I finally got around to reading it, but once I started I could not put it down. The only difference between my review and the others, is that I was reading it in the mid '90s. Even so, the book was incredibly relavent despite the year. I got the book as a library throw-away, and it was one of my prized possessions. Later, I talked to my father about the book, and was suprised... not only did he know about the book, but he had other Henry Gregor Felsen books (Hot Rod and Street Rod) which he loaned me. I must say, this story has definately stood the test of time. When one can read the book 40 years after it was written and still relate truly shows the masterful writing of a brilliant author. I would recommend this book to anyone bitten by the automotive bug.

To my surprise my son did a book report on this book and got an A. I'm going to get another copy and read it to my 4 grand-sons who also loves cars. This is a GREAT book for young boys to read and get lost in their Dreams... Sometimes those Dreams come true !!

A Truthful & Insightful Interpretation of the Human Spirit

Review Date: 2002-09-30
Crematorium is a well written story based on the human madness of a serial killer. Schleicher exposes the killer's insane motives and the terror he invokes on his victims; and explores the total breakdown of the human character in the wake of this madman's killing spree. As disturbing as this subject is, I encourage the reader to finish the story in its entirety. You will be rewarded with a truthful and insightful interpretation of the human spirit and the unbreakable bond between mother and child.

A truly impressive work that deserves a wide readership.

Review Date: 2002-03-20
"Crematorium" is an exceptional book on an unpleasant subject and I initially feared that I might be put off. I need not have worried: Schleicher has crafted an interesting, unexpected and intelligent reflection on a serial murderer and the persons whose lives he affects.

Most impressive is the way Schleicher structures and controls the plot: the time skipping (flashbacks, flash forwards), the multiple narrators and enough events to fuel three novels made it a little confusing at first. But soon everything starts to click and I found myself enjoying the anti-chronological tag-team narration of it all. Every conceivable loose end, every incident of plot (some of which I had forgotten) are tied skillfully together by the end.

Characterization is excellent. There are enough characters for a much longer work, but Schleicher gives each of them such strong individual characteristics that they each become memorable. The only character who isn't extensively drawn for us is Detmer the killer, and keeping him a mystery is entirely appropriate.

This may be the only crime novel in existence that combines bloody murders with reflections on the nature of God, an explanation of the appeal of contemporary rock music and a truly original (to me) interpretation of reincarnation. As I think you know, I personally don't believe in reincarnation, but what a wonderful dramatic device it makes here! Schleicher's take on it could fuel a whole series of novels. Anyone who reads this will be getting as much philosophy as titillation.

In short, this book is a truly impressive first work that deserves a wide readership. It reads not like a first novel, but like the product of an experienced, confident writer.

An Interesting New Twist on a Familiar Genre

Review Date: 2002-03-07
Some may think that crime thrillers about serial killers and the media's obsession with violence have been done to death...but when done well they can make for the best kind of suspense. This new author (who writes in a blunt, no-nonsesnse manner that makes even the dull parts page-turning) explores well-tread ideas and issues, but does so with just enough pizzaz and unique touches to allow it to break away from the pack. A little bit mystery, a little bit horror, a little bit spiritual, a little bit social commentary, and good doses of surrealism juxtaposed wih gritty realism all help this tale rise above most others in the genre. The only complaint is there could have been more in depth character development with some of the major players, and there seemed to be too many characters over-all to be occupying a novel that clocks in at under 200 pages. Also, some of the dialogue seemed forced and unreal. But I'll give Schleicher the benefit of the doubt and assume that it was all meant to go along with one of the novel's major motifs: memories play like badly edited movies. Highly recommended for anyone who enjoys this type of stuff.

I found this book while browsing through my favorite book store. The synopsis sounded intriguing so I decided to purchase it. I am not sorry that I did. I have not had the pleasure of reading any of the previous novels by this author but I will soon remedy that. This story was suspenseful yet with a very believeable quality about the story. Once you start reading and discover the killings it intigues so much so that you HAVE to continue to find out who and why. It also had a great twist at the end because I pride myself on being somewhat of an amateur detective but I was not prepared for the ending. If you are looking for a great book to read that you CAN'T put down until the end this is definitely one of them! Kudos Mr. Flowers, I look forward to reading more of your work in the future.

This is a story of surprising results to the various investigations. It is full of twists and turns which have the reader guessing. This book caught my attention from the beginning and held it throughout. It is well-written, fast moving, suspenseful. There are a number of explicit sex episodes. The details of Victoria's murder are gruesome. The scenes portraying the serial killer are particularly blood-curdling. Despite this I would not hesitate to recommend Damning Evidence and I eagerly look forward to his second thriller.

This book introduces the Clubhouse gang, a group of kids (all boys in the first book) that share wild enthusiasms and re-name their club with each new adventure. Here, the boys get into reptiles and amphibians, forming the "The Dangerous Snake And Reptile Club" of the title. They catch dozens of tadpoles, salamanders and non-poisonous snakes, then put them on display for the folks in their neighborhood to see. The reptile club eventually loses focus and the animals are set free, but in the last panel of the book, the stage is set for a sequel, when the boys find a "meteor" in a neighbor's back yard. This series perfectly captures the excitement with which preteens delve into their passions... The artwork is a bit grotesque, but the books work -- my kid loved 'em and wanted to hear more. My son and daughter (5 and 3) love this book - and I do, too. The story includes brothers catching snakes, finding "dinosaur bones", collecting tadpoles, and turning their club house into the snake and reptile club -- little adventures that really got my kids' imaginations racing. My kids are making plans for their own club house and would love to catch a few creatures to put inside, too. Really eye-catching, funny illustrations. And, unlike some kids' books, it manages to include characters who seem like real kids who make a little mischief, but are not negative or bratty. We read a LOT of books and this one is a stand out. We can't wait for the next club house book!

I received this book Dawn as a Christmas gift. After I finished reading it, I was stunned. I was stunned at how good the story is. I was stunned that I had never heard of it before. I was stunned that it has not yet been made into a movie. I have read the other reviews of this book and I agree with them about it. I think that the love expressed in this story is an example of "true love." The book has a "strangness" to it that the author carries off beautifully. The story takes place in the future but it is an extremely real story that could be happening today. I just finished reading it and the events seem so real to me. I can imagine the characters living today at The Oaks. You know what? This would be a perfect story for one of those television movies. I know that this is a work of fiction but the way in which Byron Edwards wrote it makes me almost believe that the The Oaks is real. I love the way it ended. I won't give it away but I really didn't want it to end. I was enjoying being taken back or ahead to that time and place with the Habershams. You really do feel as if you are there and that you are interacting with the characters. I do recommend it highly and give it five stars.

I had been sick lately and my boyfriend got me a copy of this book to read. It makes me wonder where I have been. I just found out about it. This is a great read. I love the wedding scene. You can just picture it in your head. I want my boyfriend and I to get married in a setting like this. I think people will enjoy reading this book. It has mystery but not much. It mostly has romance. This is a story of true love. Any woman in the world would want to be treated like Miss Armstrong. I think she did her husband wrong by being gone so much. You'll like this book. I can easily see this story as a movie. It would be fun to go to.

I bought this novel because of my interest in the Civil War. It contains a fascinating description of the escape from Richmand, Va. by Jefferson Davis as the Confederate treasury was brought along. However, this is not a Civil War novel. I have never read a book like this one. It is totally different from any other novel I have read. It was surprisingly good. I got about half-way through it before I realized it. This is a neat love story and a fun book to read. My wife is reading it now.

The thing I really enjoyed about this story is that, as I read it, it seemed as if I were right there. I could visualize everything that was taking place. It was like "being there" in the story. This is one of those books that could easily be turned into a movie. As you read it, you can see it happening. I also like the theme of love that runs throughout this book. It's a good story and I have recommended it to my friends. I've got a Civil War fanatic friend who really enjoyed the Lost Gold of the Confederacy part of the story.

It all started in May,2020. On a plantation in Salem, GA. The towns people thought she was crazy, but she had lost a lover and was awaiting his return. The Oaks, her plantation home, held ancient secrets and mystery. Would the return of her lover, and time, help solve the mystery from the past? I read DAWN, fancinated and yearning for more throughout the book. There is romance, sex, mystery and secret's. It takes you into the year 2020 blending in the history of The Oaks.I started reading DAWN and was up most all night , I could not put it down. I believe DAWN, would be a great movie or mini series. I recommed that you read DAWN and also get acquainted with the author,Byron Edwards. He has other books in print.

ISBN 0590420070 - Martin's BSC books tend to remain timeless, overall, despite references to things like VCRs. This and Martin's ability to keep track of details through the series always make her books worth reading.

Dawn's father and brother still live in California, while Dawn and her mother are now living in Stoneybrook. Dawn's got new friends and has settled in happily, but she's very excited to visit sunny California - she won't be the only one who eats healthy food, she loves the warm weather and, most of all, she'll get to see people she loves and misses!

Dawn and Jeff go to Disneyland with their father, they spend time at the beach and Dawn's best friend surprised her with the news that she has started their own babysitters club, called the We-Heart-Kids Club. She enjoys her visit so much that she begins to wonder if she ought to stay in California for good. Making this decision might be the most difficult thing she's ever had to do - and she doesn't have much time to decide.

There are a few moments when you almost have to laugh at the melodrama of young girls, which is nice (and pretty realistic). These books are super quick reads, and well worth picking up!

Dawn used to be a California girl until her parents' divorce. Then her mother packed up Dawn and her brother Jeff to move back her old hometown in Connecticut. Eventually Dawn made friends and a new life for herself but her brother did not and returned to California making the family even more divided than before. As the story opens Dawn is leaving to spend her spring break back in California with her father and brother and her old friends. Before long she finds that in her heart she is still a California girl but that she also loves her new life in Connecticut which leaves her with a huge problem - should she get on the plane at the end of her vacation or not?

This is #23 in the popular BABYSITTERS CLUB series. The books in this series focus on a group of young teenage girls in a small Connecticut town. Each book in the series focuses on one of the girls although each one appears to some extent. Each chapter opens with a handwritten note (journal entry, postcard, letter etc) by one of the girls commenting on the upcoming events. The series overall has several ongoing arcs that are moved along in a chronological manner but each book could be read and enjoyed independently or out of series order. The reading level of this series is 4th grade and appeals primarily to 3rd through 5th grade girls. The stories themselves are well written, the characters are believeable and appealing, remaining consistent throughout the series. The situations the girls find themselves in are realistic and dealt with in a reasonable manner.

The series is a bit dated at this point - this particular book was written in 1989 - so that a young reader today might be a bit confused by some of the references to 'current' movies or the relaxed air travel of twenty years ago. Overall though the story itself still speaks to problems faced by many young girls today.

a great great great great great great great great book

Dawn can't wait for this trip to California. Besides all the sun andfun, it's Dawn's first visit since jeff, moved back to live with their dad.California is better then dawn can remeber it.The beaches are beatiful, Disneyland is a blast, Californians eat heathy food! Plus Dawn's best friend, sunny, has even started up her own baby-sitters club. After one wonderful week, Dawn begins yo think she might want to....stay in California like Jeff. Dawn's a California girl at heart-but could she really leave Stoneybrook for good?

this book is all about dawn's decision on whether to live in stonybrook or california. Dawn is usually in anaheim california, where I live, and visits the Anaheim Stadium (now Edison Stadium) Disneyland. . . and more. Most of the setails are right, but it is kind of outdated. still a very good book. i recommend reading the first book first, though.

Dawn's trip to California with Jeff sounded good. But her mother and father always fought. Dawn always California was the best but it wasn't. Will Dawn have to go back Stoneybrook? Or will her parents stop fighting a lot?

This book is a must have for Baseball historians like myself, chronicling the careers of players who played before the "long ball" was fashionable and at a time when the game was "becoming" the National Pastime! SABR writers have given us a valuable insight into the lives of these players of yesteryear. We cannot appreciate what it must've been like to play baseball back then, when salaries were extremely low and players had to take off-season jobs to augment them. One bad injury could cost you a career and if you strayed off the straight and narrow and put your lot in with the gambling element, banishment was always a possibility, as was the lure of alcohol. The stories of these gentleman are told with affection and with such clarity that we might just as well be reading about a long deceased family member than a ballplyer from the distant past. After reading this wonderful book you will find yourself re-evaluating your thoughts on today's star players, who want for nothing and are able to dictate in what direction their careers take. Such was not the case in the years between 1895-1920. It is sad to relate that we never got a chance to see these fine players in their heyday but thanks to magnificent books like this one, we can at least read about their exploits, some happy and mostly sad but always interesting and entertaining. A glorious book, I can't wait to recieve the American League edition.

I bought this along with the American League version. I like to pick it up and read about an older player or two each week. Interesting stuff. My friends who like baseball like to browse through it as well.

The Society for American Baseball Research rarely turns out a bad book, and "Deadball Stars of the National League" continues that trend. It is an excellent book, with short biographies of the major stars for each of the franchises active between 1901 and 1919, complete with photos rare and common. The book was an enormous undertaking, with a huge amount of people on the "Deadball" Committee of the organization taking part in the writing, editing and fact checking. It's a wonderful book for those wanting a feel of the game in the first decades of the 20th century, and of the players of that time, and I highly recommend it.

Fantastic book chronicling stars of the most misunderstood era of baseball. I really enjoyed learning of some of the lesser known stars like Orvie Overall and Mike Donlin. Great work by the SABR members. I can't wait to get the companion book for the American League.

I've been a member of SABR (The Society for American Baseball Research) for eight years, and I have always enjoyed the publications that they put out and send to their members. Many of the members of SABR work very hard on the projects that interest them, and the books that get put out reflect a lot of love, if not always a ton of quality.

This book is an exception. This is the best book I've ever received from SABR, and it's the sort of thing that makes me proud to be a member. Meticulously researched, beautifully laid out, and compulsively readable, this book offers profiles of over 100 players, managers, and executives from the Deadball Era of Major League Baseball (1900-1920). A few of these guys are still well-known today (Christy Mathewson, Honus Wagner, Rogers Hornsby) but the majority are players who, despite long, successful careers, have been forgotten by all but the most die-hard fan. I've been a baseball fan all my life, and I couldn't tell you the first thing about Armando Marsans, Howie Camnitz, or Homer Smoot until I read this book.

Thanks to the work of the members of the Deadball Committee, though, now I feel like I know these guys. I applaud the members of the committee for putting together such a well-written book, and I eagerly anticipate the AL edition!
