This book is not just for manufacturers, but holds enormous value to any operation. I am impressed by how much practical help is packed into this book. It bridges the gap between a training program or reading books on implementing the Theory of Constraints in Operations and the detailed work that must be done. This book is a must to ensure both a successful and a lasting implementation of Drum, Buffer, Rope and Buffer Management in Operations.

As an APICS member, this was a must. Concise enough, it projected the TOC concepts into applied scenarios so that one can actually measure the value of the theory.
There are not many good books on TOC apart from Goldratt's novels, so buy it.

Finally - a PRACTICAL guide

Mark's book is an excellent, easy to understand read, which I found extremely helpful.

Most books on TOC deal with a lot of theory, or case studies. This is the first book I've read that goes into incredible detail on how to implement TOC using the author's years of experience in this field.

A must-read if you are plannig to implement TOC.

If you want to succeed with implementing TOC

There are, today, many good books on the Theory of Constraints, or "TOC". If you are relatively new to TOC, books from authors like Eli Goldratt, Bill Dettmer, Eli Schragenheim, Debra Smith, Lisa Scheinkopf, and many others are "must reads."

These books, however, generally focus on explaining the details of TOC. This is necessary. In order to succeed with TOC you have to know what it is and how and why it works.

But subject matter knowledge alone is not enough, if you want to actually use TOC in business. You must also have a valid roadmap for implementing it.

In my experience, this is where many people fail with TOC. They believe they can "just wing it" and so try to implement TOC without having a valid roadmap. The results are all too predictable: they wind up lost in the weeds, the implementation fails, and the company becomes blocked from further improvement for a very long time.

Mark's book is valuable because it provides a real roadmap for implementing TOC in a manufacturing organization.

Throughout the book, you have the voice of a successful TOC consultant leading you to understand how to implement TOC in a manufacturing organization. The writing is clear and direct. The advice is concrete and actionable.

The book also provides examples of various charts, forms and procedures that you can use as patterns for the materials you will need in your implementations.

In closing, I am highly satisfied with this book and don't hesitate to recommend it to anyone who is considering implementing TOC in a manufacturing organization.

I am not dumb, you are not dumb, but as Blair says in his introduction to this book- It takes more than hard work and common sense to run a manufacturing facility. My copy of this book is dog eared and warn out from use. Everytime I reference a section, I learn something new. Clear and simple explanations to complex and difficult challenges we all face in today's competitive environment. This book should be in every practitioner's back pocket.

This book never fails to amaze me!

I have an M.S. in Logistics and a nine-foot shelf of text books. When I need an answer I reach first for Williams' book, it is often the only one I need. I have only two complaints:
1. The binding - for these prices the binding should not be so fragile (I'm on my second copy).
2. References to ISO-9000 as a "Quality" standard. While most pursue ISO-9000 to help improve their quality, it is a "Documentation" standard, and it is possible to become ISO-9000 certified to build garbage.

For these two reasons (and the fact that Amazon won't let me) I can't give the book the seven stars it otherwise merits.

This book should be on the shelf of every production manager

Manufacturing for Survival is a fundamental yet easy-to-read text on manufacturing that every production manager can lean on for great advice. The book thoroughly covers all of the key shop floor best practices such as setup time reduction methods as well as traditional manufacturing textbook concepts such as MRP. So the book is a rare combination of the practical and theoretical.

Blair's book embodies his practical knowledge of manufacturing while incorporating today's business environment philosophy. Manufacturing for Survival helps to integrate the value of supply chain management into all aspects of the manufacturing environment. It is an invaluable tool that I frequently refer to. This book couldn't have been better if Moses himself had brought it down from the mountain along with the Ten Commandments. I started to highlight the most important and relevant points but, unfortunately, began to run out of ink well into the second chapter. Despite the technical nature of the subject matter, the book is easily read and digested. The formulae and calculations are presented in a manner that is quickly comprehended by both engineers and nonengineers alike. This is one great book!!!

...Perhaps five stars are not enough.

This is an excellent book for designers, well worth buying. It is a great reference guide for all material manufacturing processes, highlighted by colorful photos of processes and products. Over all it is awesome and I've found it very useful.

Another great book that has a bit more on material properties and useful stats is Materials and Design: The Art and Science of Material Selection in Product Design. These two books make an unbeatable combo.

About time someone made a book this good! Most of the other books on the subject are incomplete, out-of-date, or just plain butt-ugly. This is the new standard! In fact, I just recommended it to the department chair at the design school where I teach, so we can make this part of the curriculum. I give it six out of five stars.

This is the best book I've seen so far about this subject. Attractive for (industrial) design students, but also for professionals. Very good graphics, photography and printing quality. The choice of examples is not too technical -mostly consumer products- and therefore recognizable for designers. Low price for such quality, the only disadvantage is that with 2,6 kg the book is not easy to carry!

I am a prefessional woodworker specializing in veneer work. I own a few veneering books. Most of the modern books I own describe the very basic of how to work with veneer, basic marquetry and use of vacuum bag. This book takes the reader to another level. Not only does it provide amazing photos of the author's portfolio, but it explains how to go about creating different works of art with ease.
I became acquainted with Mr. Kopf while watching his DVD. It was immediately apparent to me that he is a master craftsman and a great teacher as well. I had high expectations for the book and after reading it I highly recommend it to anyone intersted in veneer work, especially marquetry. The simple approach to explaining how difficult pieces are created gives you confidence and motivation to go out and try it in your own shop.
As a professional woodworker I own many woodworking books, some good, some ... not so good. This one ranks among the best of them.

Silas Kopf's "A Marquetry Odyssey" stands alongside such milestones as George Nakashima's "The Soul of a Tree" and James Krenov's "A Cabinetmaker's Notebook" as one of the finest contributions to the lore of the craft of American studio furniture. Kopf's furniture itself is so visually interesting and delightful that his audience would have been fully content with a volume that merely collected the fruits of his long and varied career into a standard coffee table picture book. What we have is something much richer and more rewarding, offering in both text and images a coherent historical context and intelligible technical explanations for the several phases of Kopf's journey through the many forms of marquetry. This is not an easy project to organize and execute well. The book required long planning and great labor, and we should receive it as the gift that it is. The more self serving enterprise would have been the more familiar "show off" book, but "A Marquetry Odyssey" will still be around when the others have disappeared from the used book stores.

Outstanding book. The photographs are spectacular and there are plenty of them. The author traces the development of marquetry from earliest times through to his own work. There are numerous helpful suggestions for an aspiring wood artist such as how to get an appenticeship, work with galleries, and build a strong foundation in the craft. There is not much detail about how to actually do marquetry. But there are numerous good books on that such as "A Marquetry Course." Be warned though, if you do marquetry, after reading this book you will want to burn your pieces. I'm debating whether to let my customers know of its existance.

Beautiful. A Marquetry Odyssey simply beautiful.

Silas Kopf takes the reader on a well crafted journey. In this large scale work the art/craft of marquerty is presented in a very readable way. Silas weaves history, works and bios of the masters, sketches, wonderful photography, personal stories, humor and a few techniques into a single volume for us all to enjoy.

The book presents the education and development of a master craftsman as it has been interwoven with his discovery of the evolution of marquerty through time. Photos and details of his own furniture are presented throughout the book in an effort to show how these past craftsmen have influenced the development of his own style.

As Silas explains, his hope is to inspire others to explore marquerty and inlay in museums and workshops. I believe he has acheived his goal in this wonderful book.

I would highly recommend this book to all woodworkers, crafts people, decorators, anyone interested in the design and production of fine furniture.

Thank you, Silas.

The art of Marquetry, the art of crafting pictures into wood, is ages old. "A Marquetry Odyssey: Historical Objects and Personal Work" is Silas Kopf's fascinating and informative history of a specialized subject in the field of art. "A Marquetry Odyssey" survey's this art form's long and distinguished history, ranging back from its origins in ancient Egypt down to the present day. Kopf goes into his own work in the field, explaining his influences derived from historical precedent and examples from great Marquetry artists down through the ages. A core addition to personal, professional, academic, and community library Art History reference collections, "A Marquetry Odyssey" is an excellent introduction to the art and a thoroughly 'reader friendly" explanation of its roots and origins for students and non-specialist general readers with an interest in the Marquetry art work.

Review Date: 2000-09-27
This book is very good for the fact that it focusses on the methods of analysis of structures using the matrix methods. It is shown nicely how matrix methods using the stiffness and flexibility methods simplify the methods of analysis of structures. One unique quality of this book is that the flowcharts used are easily understandable and hence it becomes easy for a student to actually do programming and get the results of analysis in a very quick time.Putting everything in matrix form makes students realise some orderliness in chaos and that greatly helps, in understanding the concepts and i would say that this book was totally successful in doing this job.

Solution of 2D and 3D Structures
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2000-11-25
This book solves 2D and 3D structures using Stiffness Method. For the 2D structures, it starts off with trusses, then beams and frames. Next, for the 3D structures, space trusses, space beams i.e. grids and space frames are introduced. Special cases such as pin-jointed members or member releases, temperature and fabrication error effects and support displacements were considered in this book. Usually, a structural stiffness matrix's size is Z x Z where Z is 2 times the number of joints for 2D structures. However, in this book, Kassimali's structural stiffness matrix size is DOF x DOF where DOF is the number of directions a joint can freely move. Thus this reduces computer memory storage. This book also comes with a CD-ROM with 6 programs for solving 2D and 3D trusses, beams and frames. Highly recommended for Structural Engineers wanting to write their own Structural Analysis software using Stiffness Method as good flowcharts are presented in this book. There is only 7 pages on Flexibility method. Special topics and modelling techniques are introduced such as nonprismatic members, semirigid connections, inclined roller supports etc. are presented in this book.

"Hands on" Matrix Analysis of Structures

Review Date: 2002-06-22
This book is a must for a structural engineer who wants to have a better understanding of how computers are used to perform structural analysis. The author explains precisely how computers are used to analyze 2D and 3D trusses, beams, frames, and grids in a language a working engineer can understand. This book has the reader participate in the process of understanding matrix analysis of structures by supplying flowcharts and examples that are accurate and easy to understand.

Also, the author discusses the flexibility and stiffness methods as well as finite-element formulation using virtual work to explain matrix structural analysis. And what I like about this book the most is the fact that the author explains in a step-by-step manner precisely how to write and test a working matrix structural analysis program in any computer programming language.

Dear fellow mediators or anyone looking into the mediation profession:

Mosten's book, Mediation Career Guide, is just the book I was looking for to strategically guide me through deciding whether to go into mediation as a profession. The book is well organized and can be read cover to cover or as a reference guide. Some of the key parts of the book are 1) Deciding if Mediation is Right for You and 2) Building Your Career as a Mediator.

The chapter on deciding whether to get your law degree or not for mediation was an especially important chapter for me. I completed one year of law school and then decided to re-evaluate my J.D. path. I enrolled in SMU's Dispute Resolution program to help with my decision. Mosten's book is the only mediation book that directly dealt with the J.D. dilemma. The chapter did not tell me what to do or what Mosten thinks is best. Instead, the chapter asked certain questions about my background to see whether a J.D. is a good choice or not.

Mosten's book is a MUST HAVE if you are deciding whether the mediation profession is right for you and how to build a mediation practice.

Thank you Forrest (Woody) Mosten for this book and all of your contributions to the peace-making profession!

It even talks about how to establish the physical environment of your office. Combine this with Allan H. The Definitive Book on Mediation
Helpful Votes: 40 out of 40 total.
Review Date: 2002-02-17
Forrest Mosten has written what must be the definitive book for those who are considering or might consider a career in mediation.

I have known the author since 1970, when he was a law student working part time for me in the foreign student office at UCLA. Even then he was thinking about how he might incorporate his strong social conscience into the practice of law. Ten years later he found his answer when he committed himself to becoming a professional mediator. For Mosten, mediation is more than an efficient means of resolving disputes, it is a way to work as a peacemaker at the person-to-person level. It provides its practitioners who are attorneys with an alternative to the adversarial nature of the legal system, which weighs heavily on many lawyers. Of course it provides the same benefit for clients. He makes his point about mediation as a peace effort dramatically in chapter one, where he states "...don't jump into a growing but still uncertain field like mediation unless you eat, breath and dream about creating peace and resolving conflict and are willing to risk everything to make it happen".

In addition to maintaining a highly successful mediation practice in Los Angeles, Mosten trains future mediators and he has established a nation-wide network of mediation centers. He also is the author of three previous books on mediation.

The author's purpose in writing the book is stated in the first paragraph of the preface, where he says "It was an uphill climb to build my mediation practice. This book is my effort to help you avoid many of the costly mistakes I made along the way".

The book is organized into three parts, each with several chapters, followed by nine appendices. In the first part, "Is Mediation right for You?", he covers the question of what it takes to be a mediator, such as being a good listener, patient, tolerant and neutral, flexible, and empathic, among other traits. In the chapter on "Education and Training", he discusses the question of non-lawyers as mediators. Mosten admits that lawyers have certain advantages, but he lists other fields which often provide a good background, such as therapists, business persons, teachers and clergy. Whether they come from the law or other fields, he states, extensive training in mediation will be required. Here Mosten goes into some depth on this subject which is dear to his heart because he wants "...mediation to be the first stop on the conflict resolution highway", which means having "...enough trained and experienced mediators available to meet this need".

Part Two, "Building Your Career as a Mediator" deals with the creation of a mediation signature, which includes advice on writing vision and mission statements to distinguish your particular practice. He also advocates having a board of directors to help with these tasks and to provide a sounding board along the way which he had earlier described as an informal group of persons whose judgment you trust. (He might more accurately have called them a "board of advisors). Another chapter, "Creating a Mediation-Friendly Environment", gets down to reading materials and arrangement of the reception room. Most important, he introduces the idea of the client library, described as a consumer-friendly collection of books, video tapes and other resources which will help clients learn what they need to help solve their own problems. This concept is related to Mosten's preference for informed client consent, and he reports that his library is well used by his clients.

Part Three is "The Nuts and Bolts of Private Practice", which covers topics such as finding a place to practice, naming your practice, forming strategic partnerships and networks. With respect to networks, he uses his own Mosten Mediation Centers as an illustrative model, in which he has established local mediators around the country as subcontractors. In the chapter entitled "Strategic Planning and Investing in Yourself", he gets very specific about the time and money required to establish a mediation practice, including a breakdown of out -of-pocket costs which add up to $57,000 over a five-year period.

Even though he has stated his desire to see a great increase in the number of practicing mediators, Mosten in no way sugarcoats the obstacles and challenges facing anyone who plans to enter the field. His candor, at times, would almost seem to discourage, but at least anyone who has read the book would enter the field fully warned. More important they will have read a well integrated combination of philosophy and nuts and bolts, each supporting the other.

This is a critical book for those contemplating a career in mediation, it is a useful book for anyone contemplating using the services of a mediator, and it is an interesting book for those who are attracted by the concept of mediation as a force for more peaceful interpersonal relations.

I have always wanted to cast parts to fix my lawn mower, go cart, and such. I half way tried it once with not much luck. I was determined to cast a rear axle support for my go cart that had broken. I ordered this book after reading good reviews on some casting websites.
The book makes sure you have the right tools and materials to start you out on the right foot. Then it goes step by step through small projects to give you practice. It even teaches you the fundamentals to take it to the next level. It took a few tries, but I have finished my rear axle support and added in my own design to make it better. I just ordered volume 2 10 minutes ago.

Mr. Stephen Chastain's newest addition to the amateur foundry
literature is a two volume set titled "Metal Casting for the Small Foundry" and builds on his established technical expertise and straightforward explanations in his two prior works "Iron Melting Cupola Furnaces for the Small Foundry" and Build and Oil-Fired Tilting Furnace". Mr. Chastain has condensed an enormous amount of material into these two volumes. By my count he has extracted information from 35 references and conveys the information in a clear manner and readable manner. No other work does this for the beginning foundry enthusiast. A summary of Volume 1 Table of Contents follows:

Chapter 1 The Sand Casting Process
Basic Foundry Equipment

Chapter 2 Foundry Projects
Making a Match Plate Vibrator
Mold Making
Making Wooden Flasks
Making Flask Hardware
Making a an Aluminum Flask
Rammer

Chapter 3 Melting Equipment
Crucibles and Ladles
Furnaces for the Small Foundry
Beginners Charcoal Furnace
Stepping up to a Gas Fired Furnace
Forming Sheet metal for Furnaces

Chapter 4 Temperature Measurement
Thermocouples
Making a Thermocouple Thermometer
Optical Pyrometers

Chapter 5 Foundry Sands and Binders
Molding Sand
Clays
Mullers and Mulling
Cement Binders
Development of Oil Bonded Sand
Petro-Bond
Furan Binders

Chapter 6 Coremaking
Cores
Core Binders
Core Finishing
Core Jigs
Core buoyancy
Strainer Cores

Bibliography 19 references

Appendix Thermocouple tables

Suppliers 23 suppliers/vendors

Index

In short, Mr. Chastain have provided a fairly complete reference
for the beginning and intermediate metal caster in a concise,
readable format. He touches on information that takes nine
separate books in my current library but provides practical
techniques and examples of projects lacking in these
works. Volume 2 builds on this knowledge for the intermediate
and advanced amateur foundry enthusiast. A of the Table of
Contents follows:

Metal Casting vol. 2

Chapter 1 Solidification of Metals
Freezing of Pure Metals
Frizzing of Alloys
Phase Diagrams

Chapter 2 Aluminum Alloys

Wonderful photos and interesting history

Being both a history buff and having grown up and lived in Miami for 20 years, I could certainly appreciate the spirit of this book. Miami is currently synonymous in popular media and culture with clubs and partying, sexy people and celebrities, and hip shops (even though this image is more descriptive of Miami Beach and South Beach rather than the city of Miami itself). Despite it being a relatively young city, though, it is still rich in its own history and thankfully this book goes beyond the present glossy, superficial party image of the city and transports the reader back to a simpler and more wholesome time. This is Miami how its founders and earliest residents knew it. Most of the "before" pictures date from the 20's and 30's, and it is really fascinating to see how things have changed. As I said, I grew up in Miami and there are places shown in the book that I never even knew existed, such as the Scottish Rite Masonic Temple and the Coral Gables Rock House. I am glad that the author explores not only downtown Miami and Miami Beach, but devotes pages of photos to other neighborhoods around Miami such as Coral Gables, Coconut Grove, Little Havana, and even Opa Locka and Hialeah (being a Hialeah native myself, I would have liked to see more than just the one picture of the racetrack, but that is my own personal bias). While the book is certainly complete, I feel maybe too many pages were devoted to certain places, such as Coral Gables and Coconut Grove for example, and perhaps some of that coverage could have been reduced and made room for other places to be shown. I am glad that the author explores little known places familiar to residents and not just the touristy areas that visitors would know, but on the other hand, some of these are a little too obscure and I would have also liked to have seen what was in some of those touristy areas, such as Bayside, the zoo, major malls, etc. Just because of those little complaints I give the book four stars, but if you don't care about these, then this might as well be 5 stars and it is still a highly recommended book.

Having grown up in Miami, I found the book particularly interesting. The pictures were excellent. I thought the captions could have been a bit more informative.

Execellent book - highly recommended, but get down here and see for yourself - what's happening to the Miami is magical and really a golden opportunity for all. Over the next few years Miami's Skyline will be transformed as builders and investors seek billions in pre-construction investments to turn the city into a the epicenter of the region.

If you have lived in Miami or have an affinity toward Miami, this is a must-have book. Few people in Miami like Arva Moore Parks have taken the time to document the City's rich history as the fastest-growing metropolis in the United States over the last 100 years. The "then and now" photos offer splendid matches, with interesting and informative historical notes in the caption. Great coffee-table book too!

I was born and reared in Miami, the fourth generation of my Pioneer South Florida family. I was delighted with this book, it brought back so many memories.

The old photographs are gems, and the descriptions well written and informative. I enjoyed the "then" pictures with the "now", in some instances they are almost unbelievable, the Coconut Grove Womens Club little Club House which I went to frequently is a good example, long may it survive!

A quick review

A great book that gives a quick overview from contact printing and projection aligners (1970's and early 1980's technology), but it spends most of its time and effort on the more recent (2000's) technology and processes. There was information packed into each page, providing both an overview and detail into the more recent development of lithography. It helps to have some previous exposure to lithography as well as the topics of physics, optics, and chemistry since the book will build on all of these subjects to provide the basis of the newer technology.

E-beam Lithography

The book provides a great overview of the Electron Beam Lithography, which was the material of interest for me. Material is conveyed in great detail while the meaning of the material is not necessarily constricted to the experts. As an undergraduate student, I found the material readable. I was also able to understand most of the information well and as a result I believe I have a good base of knowledge about lithography. I would definitely recommend this book to other students.

I teach a graduate class in Microlithography and this is the best text I have seen to date. It contains all the modern techniques presented in an easy to read format. I highly recommend this text for all process engineers in the field or engineers wishing to learn more about this integrated circuit processing technique.
