Defusing Relationship Land Mines - at Work and at Home

Review Date: 2008-09-19
In an age when self-help, self-improvement books line shelves and racks of every bookstore, it's difficult to find a book that stands out. This one does. Author Henry Cloud offers a perspective that applies to many situations I have observed, many I have been a party to.

How often have you watched interactions slide into disaster because someone, a boss, a spouse, a sibling, failed to define limits and then stick to those limits? How often have people crossed your personal limits without knowing they were? Could the disaster have been eliminated before it destroyed a relationship? Can you actually improve your life by clearly setting limits in your relationships? Those are the sticky wickets Dr. Henry Cloud tackles in "The One-Life Solution."

For me, the whole book was a thought-provoking review - of people and situations I have observed, of situations in my own life I could have prevented or handled more effectively. I thought of friends who won't set limits for their children - and what a disagreeable experience it is to be around those children. I thought of times I allowed people to go beyond my personal boundaries because I was trying too hard to please. I thought of the times when work was routinely a 24-hour-a-day ordeal, and how I could have managed the demands placed on me more effectively. I decided what I would do in the future to avoid or mitigate such situations.

Author Cloud will show you how to set limits effectively and actually improve situations that may now be causing you significant discomfort. He focuses primarily on work relationships, but the problems and solutions he presents fit many human interactions.

You'll find this book especially helpful if you're hiring friends or relatives, so don't miss the tips found in the Appendix. They're pure gold.

I highly recommend this book - for bosses, employees, spouses, lovers, friends, and parents, that is for everyone. If we take his advice, openly declare our boundaries, listen and observe the boundaries of others, our relationships will improve - for everyone involved.

The author does a good job of defining the grey area
of boundaries. Dividing lines are needed to live a
good life- one undisturbed by constant interruptions.

A boundary provides structure so that work and other
issues do not invade our spare time without escape.
People need to gain control in order to relax, plan
and catch up with an ever growing schedule.

The author asks the question " Which areas of your life
do you control? " . If work or play takes up 100% of the
time, then realistic boundaries aren't being set.
These problems are encountered by young people. For
instance, friends may occupy an inordinate amount of
time leaving no opportunity to complete studies or
household duties. Resultingly, people need to develop
and implement rules to ensure that important
activities are scheduled/completed in every event.

At some point, people need to be assertive when their
valuable space or time is being taken up without
a compelling rationale. The volume is excellent for
any individual who seeks to plan to enjoy a more
wholesome and pro-active lifestyle.

Simply Brilliant!

Dr. Cloud has an amazing ability to articulate extraordinary complex psychological principals in a manner that any person can comprehend. This book gives the reader a blueprint of what is possible should he/she choose to take ownership of their life. The section that I love the most was "Follow the Misery and Make a Rule." Dr. Cloud does an excellent job in describing how despite all of the modern "advances" that technology has brought us (i.e., email, pda's, blackberry, cell phones, etc.) we, as a society, have become more "disconnected" from our loved ones due to the increasing demands placed upon us. The importance of creating structure and deciding where, when and with whom we will spend our energy and time is clearly evident as these can be a source of energy or a major distraction to accomplishing our goals. As I finished reading this book I felt a sense of empowerment, hope, excitement, and sheer joy for I read on it's pages exactly the tools which I have needed to assist me in completing the tedious process of completing my doctoral dissertation. I have already begun implementing the tools that I have learned from this book and they have made an amazing difference! This book can help anyone learn how to have balance in their work, home and family life. Dr. Cloud has done a stellar job and I recommend this book to anyone who desires to grow or who is in the growth process. Thank you Dr. Cloud! CD, MS

I bought this book since 1st edition more than 10 years ago for collection.
But for the 2nd edition I bought 7 years ago, I use it as a reference for basic understanding. This is a very detailed textbook about MOSFET. But I still don't know how much different between small-signal model and large-signal model as a lumped circuit elements. Please gives an example of measurement value for recent development of small and large signal model lumped element of MOSFET so that I can design something realistic without HSPICE or SmartSPICE.Some reviewer from NEWCAS-TAISA2008 told me that basic noise model is useless. Does anyone beleive it true or false? So, I will wait for the 3rd edition of this book.

Just reading the Preface to this book, I fell in love with the author. I completely agree that sometimes the most rigorous and careful treatment of a subject actually makes it possible to study the material faster!! What always frustrated me and slowed me down in reading other books was the sloppiness and hand waving. It's amazing that many Ph.Ds and even authors of famous books like Uyemura's "Fundamentals of MOS ICs" don't understand the simple body effect, and talk about complete nonsense showing a 2 terminal capacitor with Vb applied to the bulk, and saying that the Vt will now change by the sqrt(Vb) body effect. They don't understand that the body effect is a 3 terminal effect and in 2 terminals if you apply Vb to bulk then your Vt will have to increase by Vb--NOT sqrt(Vb)!!! This book is a delight. Just the material on contact potentials was worth the money.

This is a repeat of a review I did previously.

I am a graduate student with main area of interest in Mixed mode design, testing and device modelling. This book was suggested to me by my proffessor. It is the book for MOSFET.I have read many books on this topic like Tyagi,Foty, massobrio etc but this books stands apart. It is a very well written book. Its progress is very logical going from two terminal device to four terminal device with very good explanation of the physics.More importantly the emphasis on the approximations made makes things clearer.....

For a person working with Mosfets it is a must......

I don't usually write reviews unless the book is either very poor or very good. This is one of the best books on my shelf. If you want to know the MOS transistor this is the book. Well researched, excellent explanations, excellent appendices. Other authors of technical books should use this as an example of how to write a good technical book.

Great for senior managers and executives

There aren't a lot of really good books about performance management, and performance measurement specifically, available yet. Too many of them are overly prescriptive in what to measure and very light on the details of how to measure (properly).

Because I specialise in performance measurement (and have done for over 14 years now), I've read quite a bit in this field and expected that Gary's book was going to be another one I'd refuse to recommend to my clients and subscribers.

But that's not what happened. I actually really enjoyed Gary's book, and support a lot of his philosophy about performance management. It's got to have strong alignment to strategy, it's got to be well thought through, it's not really about scorecards and technology, it's about making it easier to execute strategy, and it's about reliable and objective data.

It's a great book to give people that really need to take performance management more seriously, particularly senior managers and executives. It's not a book for the operational manager that is new to performance measurement (in this case try "Performance Scorecards" by Chang and Morgan).

Quantifiable vs. Qualifiable Performance Management Systems
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 2005-03-23
I met Gary at a SAS conference the other day and we had a discussion on various issues. One of them being the query of why so many strategies to improve performance fail. Is it in the design or the execution of strategy? Gary popped the commonly accepted view that it is failure to execute otherwise sound strategies. And I replied, being a Strategy Consultant for over 16 years, that I haven't seen a sound strategy yet. After some debat we agreed that design and execution are equaly important.

This book is about execution of sound strategies using a series of quantifiable performance management methods. These are most popular in the Anglo-Saxon (US/UK) world and have been exported to the European mainland as well where they compete with qualifiable performance management systems. What is the difference? Quantifiable PMS' are based on measurement and consequences as strategy and tactics are imposed top-down. Qualifiable PMS' however are based upon a 'meeting-in-between' strategy process where productivity is boosted by inspiration, motivation and creativity. Employee involvement is the key. Instead of using fixed targets and bandwiths, one would use waypoints and scenario's, leaving the control of execution to operational teamleaders. (In W.W.II the Germans were 1.7 times more effective than the Allied forces using qualifiable techniques, even though they were outnumbered 3 to 1 by allied forces using quantifiable techniques). Qualifiable techniques are based on the assumption that operational conditions and short term objectives change all too rapidly for a rigid approach of planning & control. But if operational teamleaders understand the strategic and tactical objectives they can easily adapt to new conditions.

However Gary's latest book is the best book on quantifiable PMS' since Maximum Performance Management by Boyett & Conn (that actually tries to combine qualifiable and quantifiable techniques).

Don't just buy it, read it!

Business performance in context of today's environment

If execution is the goal these days, then this book brings an interesting perspective -- it's both big picture AND 'how to do it' at the same time. Cokins does a great job of putting the execution imperative into the larger context of "why." A good read for a reminder of basic performance management tools and for exploring how they work best in the context of today's tough business environment.

Great Graphics in Performance Management

Review Date: 2004-05-15
Gary's book, on Performance Management published by Wiley, does an excellent job of pointing out there are no "Silver Bullets" or management tools that solve all problems. Combinations of the right techniques is an art. Bold graphics and flow charts in the book do much to stimulate the thought process. Business failure is often a result of inadequate performance management systems. Survival in today's global economy requires many of the better performance management techniques described in Gary's new book. A great addition to any business library. A must-read if you plan to take your business to the next level

I recently started a podcast, The Susanna Hutcheson Power Marketing Show. Since I'm starting to write scripts and produce podcasts for other businesses, I felt I needed this information.

I had read quite a bit and done my background before starting my own podcast. I had one or two episodes under my belt when I began reading this book. While I had already done about half of what the book proposed, it offered up some brilliant ideas and I was most pleased. I'm sure it will be profitable to me going forward.

The book is well written and covers just about everything. I would have given it 5 stars except that a couple of the links are dead. One I especially wanted, a Word doc, was a 404. The book is not old enough to be that out-dated.

I recommend this book as a must-read to any person who wants to grow their business and do things the right way. It will help you to avoid mistakes and it should help you to make a profit and increase your sales.

Outstanding Resource for Podcasters out there

I am a podcaster and wanted to know more about the business side of what I have been doing and see if there is profit to be made from my work directly vs the indirect marketing I have been doing for myself. It is very well written, entertaining and educational, even during the 'dry' topics. I could not think of a better recommendation for reading on podcasting and how to monitize a cast than this book.

This book has opened my eyes to many online resources I did not know were available to me for things like:
-Current growth of podcasts and future trends marking out where podcasting will be in a few years.
-How to study and track your audience.
-Measuring and defining success of your cast.
-Search Engine optimization and tools to help optimize
-Hosting and costs
-Podcast directories and what ones you NEED to be in
-How to monetize and differing models with pro and con lists
-Ad networks and how they work and what one will work for you
-How to sell your own sponsorships
-Tracking ROI for your sponsors

Along with all the great information as above, there are great real world examples of what works what does not and the best path for you to take on your podcast.

I highly recommend this to podcast producers, marketing, business professionals or someone with a interest in how the business of podcasting works. For the producer it will help develop the cast to a more digest able medium for your audience and a more profitable one as well. For the business and marketing professionals it will explain how it works, what works and what does not, and best practices for monitization. Finally for those interested, how podcasters can make money.

I have several books on podcasting most if not all are collecting dust on my shelf, in the first week of having this book it became the most worn, highlighted, and read book on this topic to the point it is on my desk as a direct reference to projects I am working on right now and I don't see it moving any time soon.

This book is the must-have resource for anyone who is either launching a new podcast, or measuring and monetizing the one they have. Because of the podcasting "boom", many assumed that podcasting would be the ultimate get-rich-quick scheme. How hard can it be? You get a microphone, a computer and a website, and then just start raking in the cash. What many have realized is that, like any medium, podcasting is a tool for reaching an audience. It can't be the only tool you use, and this book helps you understand how to use all the tools at your disposal to launch, measure, produce, and maintain a podcast to make it impossible for your audience to miss.

Even as someone who has been at this since the phrase was coined, I learned a lot of valuable new information from this book.

Great book for the "Business of Podcasting"! I like the clear layout with tips and reviews at the end of each chapter. I would also recommend the
Podcasting For Dummies and Podcast Solutions if you want core books and are just starting with the plan of a business podcast show. A great book on podcasting that covers an overview, fundamentals, production, and distribution. Amust read for serious marketers

Review Date: 2008-04-06

I liked this book a lot. It is very well outlined. And it is very well written. I found it to be an easy read. But not a particularly quick read since it is pretty thick in page count and page size. The book is broken into four parts and 16 chapters:

I. Podcasting overview: Understanding the medium and its impact on business (Chapters 1-3)
II. Podcasting fundamentals: Planning and development (Chapters 4-6)
III. Producing the podcast: Production, delivery and legal issues (Chapters 7-10)
IV. Podcast distribution: Marketing, measuring and monetizing (Chapters 11-16)

Social media and Web 2.0 is comprised of a few tools that people and businesses can use to be a part of that community. The main one is blogging. And podcasting is a natural extension of blogging. What is said and has been written about blogging can also be said and written about podcasting. And this book does just that. Some people read books to get their information. Others listen to the radio or watch TV. I suspect many more listen to the radio and watch TV than read books.

Currently many more people taking part in Social Media and Web 2.0 are blogging than podcasting. But that statistic very well may change. And by reading this book one will probably understand and realize why. And even better, one will learn how to get involved in podcasting.

This book is specifically written for a business audience. It focuses on how businesses can incorporate podcasting into their marketing mix. It covers planning, content creation, legal considerations, branding, marketing, advertising, monetization, and much more.

I liked the chapter summaries at the end of each chapter called "Lessons Learned." They made it easy to get an overview of the book before I read it page to page. My favorite chapter was the seventh. It went into "Podcast Production." It got into sufficient detail and specifics that I pretty much saw what was involved in creating audio and/or video files. Emphasis was more on audio files.

The bottom line is that businesses should understand the power of podcasting and how to use it in their marketing mix. Podcasting can significantly improve a company's communications efforts with its customers, prospects, and the media. 5 stars!

Classic Communication Theory Text - Buy Two Copies

Review Date: 2005-04-15
This is one of the best technical/theoretical books I have ever read. It sets the example for teaching the fundamentals of communication theory to a capable audience without diluting the content. Yes it is old, but OLD is GOLD in this case.

This book (combined with Van Trees' "Detection, Estimation, and Modulation Theory, vol.1) is an excellent manuscript for a fundamental understanding of communication theory.

(1) Especially valuable is the chapter 4 (about optimum receiver principles), that makes this book a great buy. For the more enthusiastic student,

(2) Chapter 5 gives the derivation of the Shannon Capacity Theorem, a concept that makes one proud to understand.

(3) Chapters 2 & 3 provide very strong background on probability and random processes. You may have had these on your other courses, but this is a very nice treatment and referred by the later chapters.

(4) Chapter 6,7,8 are about implementation, channel models, and waveform communications, and they are obviously outdated, (e.g., Viterbi algorithm was not invented yet when this book was written) . However, if you feel the need to implement a Fano decoder, this is the best place to look, explanations by other books appear to be wrong!

RECOMMENDATION:
***************
This is one of the most valuable books for me in my personal library. Definitely buy it, you will not regret it.

This book sets the standard so high that other contemporary books on communication theory in general (examples: Proakis, Sklar) look like second rate, and rush job, copy and paste books on certain specialties such as space-time coding, MIMO (example: Paulraj et. al.) recyclable paper quality.

LONG LIVE: Wozencraft and Jacobs!

Should be in every library

This 1965 textbook is arguably the most scholarly textbook ever written for communication engineers. Although the Proakis and Sklar (and also McKay) books are the standard textbooks for digital communications and estimation/detection theory nowadays; they don't even come close to this textbook. The Proakis textbook has gotten the unfortunate reputation as having the most comprehensive treatment regarding "hard-core" communication theory. However, the divergence between modern textbooks which are "practical" versus older textbooks which focus more on "theory" is very clear. Somewhere along the way, today's textbooks have truly lost much of the hard-core theory, and this book has it.

The Chapters are as follows: (1) Introduction (2) Probability Theory (3)Random Waveforms (4)Optimum Receiver Principles (5)Efficient Signaling for Message Sequences (6) Implementation of Coding Systems (7) Important Channel Models (8) Waveforms Communications and appendixes (A-D)

The chapter on probability is bar-none the most comprehensive I have ever seen in any digital communications book, and covers multidimensional pdf's and explains the significance of moments and other things you might only find in a book dedicated specifically to stochastic processes. The coverage of the topics on signal-spaces is fantastic, and the chapter on optimum receivers is also extremely thorough despite the age of this book. Wozencrafts treatment of "channel capacity" and the derivations which he provides are unlike anything in any other book, covering the sphere packing argument quite thoroughly (the only other author to ever get this comprehensive was Shannon himself, and Pierce in his 1960'is vintage book on information theory). His coverage of various important bounds is covered very well (i.e. Chernoff bound) such that even an undergraduate can understand it. Other chapters are equally well written. No, the book obviously is not as up to date as Sklar or Proakis and doesn't cover alot of the more "practical" aspects of modern communications.... but if you want a die-hard communication theory book... this is a classic must-have.

This book is the best "text book" ever written for graduate-level digital communications, though some contents of the latter half part of this book is outdated.

The highlight of this book is its excellence in explaning "signal space concept" and "sufficiency of observables for optimum detection". Forget other textbooks and references you have. Read this book. I haven't yet found any other book that has better explanation on these topics.

This book is like a rite of passage for communication engineers. If you're one of those and haven't read the book, then (1) don't tell anybody about it and (2) read the book immediately! Maybe we can conjecture that if someone knows communication then this person read Wozencraft and Jacobs. It must be said that the book is outdated, but the basics are there in a unequalled presentation.

Excellent for optimum receiver principles

I used parts of this book in a digital communications course at UIUC. The book is written in a very lucid manner, atleast the chapters that I referred to - 3, 4 & 5. They provide a solid understanding to the subject material and it may seem mind boggling that even though the book was written way back in 1965 it is still a classic and is considered as one of the best references for optimum receiver principles. It makes for some smooth and sufficient reading (chaps. 3,4,5) when compared to other books such as that by Proakis etc. A must buy for any person in the Communication Area!

I must admit that I felt a bit uneasy when I found out that this book, which was recommended to me by a friend, had been written by someone with a PhD. In my experience, books written by PhDs are often very academic, difficult to read, and end up telling me what I already know in a very convoluted way.

This book, however, dares to enter "dangerous academic territory" by, for example, defining "knowledge" and measuring it in different instances of business communication. Even in doing so, its ideas make sense and are logically consistent. It also wraps everything up nicely by proposing a methodology (MetaProi) to put the ideas in the book into practice and showing the results of the use of that methodology.

I think this book might get a "thumbs down" from academic ivory tower dwellers. From me (what do I know?), it gets two thumbs up!

Ned's book is great! I used his nine-step system (MetaProi) to facilitate four Business Process Improvement Teams in a local audio visual supply company. All four teams modeled, redesigned, and developed an implementation plan for at least one business process. Three of the four teams went on to successful implementation of their plans. One dynamo team solved several problems. Other than the kickoff, there were no face-to-face meetings. The widely distributed teams used collaborative technologies for nearly all interactions, resulting in minimal impact to daily operations. Participants were excited about growing with new methodologies and technologies.

This book will be essential reading for those wishing to develop insight into process improvement methodologies, which span popular business process reengineering and total quality improvement movements, and the use of computer mediated communication (groupware) to support these process improvement efforts. In particular, the marriage of the Metaproi methodology and groupware techniques, presented and illustrated with field experience, will be invaluable for those researching or undertaking process improvement projects.

This book is very good for all types of projects. It covers setting up a project, organizing the work, managing a project, handling several projects at once, dealing with project issues and crises, using modern technology such as groupware and the Internet. The approach of establishing an issues data base and relating issues to specific tasks in a project is unique. It is very useful.

This is one of the best project management books for introducing employees to modern project management in an interesting way. Most project management books are ver dry and lack realistic examples. Thus, it is difficult to motivate people to read and use such materials. This is a very practical, down to earth book that has many guidelines that you can use immediately as you read the book. Some of the strengths of the book are: 1) best description of matrix management; 2) use of collaborative tools in managing projects; 3) how to deal with multiple projects; 4) how to share resources across several projects; 5) how to deal with risk in projects. The authors have developed a very creative and useful approach in dealing with project risk that associates project risk with unresolved issues. I highly recommend this book.

Project management for the 21st century is one of the most usable, easy to read, and complete project management books. There are good examples. Techniques are modern--better than that available in other books. This books stresses working together, sharing information, and dealing with resources that are spread among various projects. Very good reference.

This book provides the basics of project management in an easy to use casual style. It proceeds step by step through building a plan and then managing a project. The chapter on project costing is good, but could use some more detail. The modern and historical examples are usefully examined. These could be expanded more later.

When you need physical property data, and you don't have exact information; this book provides best available estimations of the physical properties. It has been a great help to me, over the years.

Having worked on a piece of an earlier edition, as a grad student at U of Mo - Rolla; where Bruce Poling was a professor, I know how much work it is putting this together for the industries. My hats off to Bruce and his co-authors, and especially to Nanci, his wife, for doing yoman's work on this 5th edition of a classic!

A Must-Have in Chemical Engineering

If you are a chemical engineer and do not own this text, you will have a hard time. This text covers all physical properties of organic, and some inorganic, gases and liquids. It offers complete theoretical development and practical equations which are amenable to spreadsheets and numerical analysis. Particularly useful is a comparison at the end of every topic showing the accuracy of each method in predicting a property. Presented in tabular form, it allows the reader to choose a method which is sufficient for his/her needs. You may decide to choose a method that is less accurate but easier to program. Every chemical engineer should have this text. My only regret is that we did not have time in undergraduate to use this text. I learned its value from watching the graduate students.

If this review was helpful, please say so. Thanks.

Excellent Guide to Workings of ASPEN Process Model

The book is an absolutely practical treatise of applied thermodymamics. The explanations of how to use property estimation methods are excellent, but invaluable are the comments on their accuracy and recommendations as to when to use which method.

The book served as my operating manual for the ASPEN software for modeling chemical processes. The book documented nearly every method used by ASPEN.

Comprehensive, easy to understand

I was a bit unconfortable when I bought this book since I was suspicious that this one was one of those unreadable thermodynamic books. Fortunately I was wrong. This book provides you with a complete treatment of the properties of gases and liquids in a plain language stressing the understanding of the basic laws governing the behavior of liquids and gases instead of the mathematic that goes with it. The treatment of the topics is very suitable for engineers since it allows quick understanding of the phenomena and provides a wealth of correlations and methods for estimating properties. The appendixes contain all kind of basic information indeed helpful for applying the correlations showed. Without any hesitation, this book is well worth its price.

My wife and I purchased this book nearly 10 years ago, while living in Gadsden, AL. With the top down on my Jeep, we hit the road and spent many enjoyable weekends, this book and notebook in hand, tracking down many of the barns listed.

When we found a Rock City barn, we took a picture, then logged in the directions. With the obvious help of this book, we've seen most of the ones in the Southeast. In the book, Mr. Jenkins was graceful in acknowledging Clark Byers, the southern gentleman who, along with his crew, painted the barns many years ago. Around 1999, we had the privilege of meeting and spending time with Mr. Byers and his wife at their home in Rising Fawn, GA one evening.

Mr Jenkins is to be commended for helping to preserve the memories of a true Southern landmark, the Rock City Barn. My wife Jeanne and I would heartily recommend this book.

While not a complete collection of Rock City Barn photographs (I doubt that this would be possible,) David Jenkins has captured quite a few of them in all of their shoddy, historic glory. New finds pop up all the time, but it's safe to say that no new ones are being painted. While this is a shame on one hand, it also makes the ones that remain that much more special.

This is the best coffee-table book for anyone who has ever driven through the South and experienced the "See Rock City" phenomenon! I have lived in Tennessee and Georgia and seen many fading Rock City Barns. With this book, I can show my children someday these beautiful, creative advertisements that are familiar to anyone from around here!

Excellent work, Mr. Jenkins!

A beautiful, thoughtful, and sensitive documentary of a too rapidly disappearing part of Americana. Anyone who has ever seen a "See Rock City" barn will appreciate the photography and written details of this bygone era. This book should be in the reference section of every library in the USA.

An artistic, historial look at rustic barns throughout the United States with a slightly different hand-painted message on each of them urging all within sight to see Rock City,"a ten-acre tract of massive stone formations overlooking Chattanooga, Tennessee and the North Georgia countryside". Mr. Jenkin's photography is truly inspiring, a delight to the eye. This book can easily transport the viewer to simplier times via a subtle palette of colors and lighting. Highly recommended.

As a collector of, and dealer in Central Asian garments, I have long been fascinated by the printed, cotton linings of these garments. Some of the fabrics are so beautiful, that my customers turn the coats inside out, and wear them in reverse. How delightful to find a book on these fabrics. The book shows many different patterns of fabric, as well as a number of coats, turned inside out, to show the wonderful patchwork patterns. Well done.

This book is not only visually stunning, it is also a fascinating read. This is the first time that these beautiful and unusual fabrics have been given their due recognition both as designs and as an important part of Russian/Soviet history.

while this extravagantly illustrated compilation of Russian printed fabrics from 1900 to 1950 will be invaluable to both artist and collector, it is a visual delight to the general reader as well. The author skilfully weaves the history of the Cental Asian tribal peoples into the tapestry of mass migration and technology which produced stunning roller and block-printed cotton clothing.

This book is stunning in a visual sense. Each print illustrates the creative choices of the Central Asian people and also reflect the influences of the world around them. More than a book reviewing Russian textiles, it records the history of a region of the world that is not commonly explored. So beautifully photographed, one can almost feel the weave of the prints. Cloth is so commonplace we take its history for granted. This book reminds us its importance. Its interesting that a swatch of fabric can weave a story of time and people.
