The Return of the Prodigal SonReview Date: 2009-07-03
So I turned to this book for insight into the parable and into myself. Several aspects of the book struck me as important. First was the idea that each character in the story was lost in his own way. I choose to focus on the elder son and realize that Nouwen was correct in saying that resentment and bitterness, not to mention judgment and condemnation is damaging to the human heart. The key to leaving these fruitless emotions behind and moving back into the light is trust. God seeks me and wants me. I am His Beloved. Nouwen addresses each character in the parable, their weaknesses and their strengths, and ultimately if we are willing to look, we can see a piece of ourselves in the father, the elder son, and the younger son.
An added feature that greatly enhanced the lessons learned and which I did not expect was the art history lesson. Keeping in mind Rembrandt's own personality and fragility, his own interpretations were brought into the painting of the parable. Having a snapshot of the time period further added clarity.
I highly recommend this book to any person, Christian or seeker. Nouwen added insight to story and points the reader in the right direction; trust in Our Father who loves us and wants us regardless of our failings.

WOW! The title says it all....Review Date: 2009-04-29
I read this book cover to cover and enjoyed it very much. It is easy to read and is organized thoughtfully inline with each step of the Mass.
This book takes you step by step through the Catholic Mass. Along the way, it suggests ways to help you maintain focus while praying. It gives very good insight about the different aspects of the Mass.
FYI, I enjoyed this book so much, I purchased the other three "How to" books - on Catholic Devotions..., read the Bible..., and the Sacramentals...
If you are new to the Catholic faith or are considering a return, consider my humble opinion about this book and the others.
I found all of these books very resourceful, useful, and interesting.
Each book is a gem. They will help you understand and guide you with your Catholic faith.

Chaput is a man of courageReview Date: 2009-05-21
He does a marvelous job of presenting in rational terms the necessity of actually living out what one holds to be true without compromise. The martyr today looks different than she or he did in the early days of the Church, but we are called to be faithful in the same way.
He is the perfect mirror opposite of someone like the late Fr. Robert Drinan, SJ, who was a member of the House of Representatives (D-MA). Although Drinan believed abortion to be "virtual infanticide," he was still an outspoken supporter of abortion rights. Shockingly, Drinan spoke out in support of President Bill Clinton's veto of the Partial-Birth Abortion Ban Act in 1996.
Archbishop Chaput, unlike the contemporary Drinans (Fr. Jenkins of Notre Dame?), is serious about what he believes whether it is popular or not. That is why I loved his book and respect him as a courageous man.

By their loveReview Date: 2009-05-01
Catholics are to be known by their Love, Chaput directs the reader away from a "feel good" faith into sharing the hard work of a loving life and death with example: St. Thomas More.
Chaput also details the life of Cardinal Carroll of Baltimore during and after the American Declaration of Independence, which set the stage for Catholic involvement and contributions to American culture. American anti-Catholicism and anti-Clericalism have shaped the Church's actions, but have not suppressed it's vitality and charity. America's founding documents, the Declaration of Independence and Constitution, have influenced the thinking of Pope's over the centuries, which Chaput notes as a positive development in assessing the relationship of Caesar and God.
The Archbishop discusses Vatican II and the roles played by John Paul II and Benedict XVI during the Council. Interpreting the Council has been difficult, but the encyclicals coming from it are instructive for American Catholic formation. Those seeking fire and brimstone will be disappointed, as will those seeking a go-with-the-flow Faith.
This is a book that can be shared by Catholics without fear of appearing partisan, but truly concerned with encouraging dialogue within the parish or when encountering politicians and the media.

Excellent summary!Review Date: 2008-10-04
I have been impressed with the way Pope Benedict XVI writes. I suspect, much of the content of this book, reflect his personal style of writing. After all, he (as Cardinal Ratzinger) presided over the ICC that prepared the Compendium. The copy I have is the one printed by the USCCB. The texts are clearly printed and very legible. The choices of the of the photos and annotations are excellent. Another great feature of this publication is the compilation of popular prayers and devotions in English and in Latin so you won't need to have a separate prayer book while studying this one.
I would have given this copy 5 stars, but the binding broke apart after one reading. Although this could be a problem resulting from my country's climate.

Finding meaning in a confusing and often hostile worldReview Date: 2009-03-26
Nouwen tries to convey our relationship to God and the nature of our souls by comparing us to the Eucharist - we are Taken, Blessed, Broken, and Given. A few excerpts -
"When the deepest currents of our life no longer have any influence on the waves at the surface, then our vitality will eventually ebb, and we will end up listless and bored even when we are busy."
"When we keep claiming the light, we will find ourselves becoming more and more radiant. What fascinates me so much is that every time we decide to be grateful it will be easier to see new things to be grateful for. Gratitude begets gratitude, just as love begets love."
"It is remarkable how easy it is to bless others, to speak good things to and about them, to call forth their beauty and truth, when you yourself are in touch with your own blessedness."
Nouwen challenges us to pause, to look into the depths of our souls. He says that we will find God there, and then we will see the world, with all its harshness, in the right perspective. There is a certain comfort in that, but Nouwen is far from holding up faith as a magic bullet comfort pill for our spiritual restlessness. We will still be broken, but we will see our brokenness in a new light.
This book does not "push" and particular set of beliefs, and ought to appeal to people regardless of their religion by virtue of its deep insights into our deepest selves.

"When our deepest truth is that we are the Beloved and when our greatest joy and peace come from fully claiming that truth, it follows that this has to become visible and tangible in the ways we eat and drink, talk and love, play and work."
This book should not only be read. The underlying truths desperately need to be internalized by countless people who know God but fail to operate under the blessings freely offered.

A very good but not great volumeReview Date: 2009-06-19
The text is attractive to the eye in a comfortable font, it has the Aramaic translations by Onkelos (a standard in all-Hebrew editions), it has the original Hebrew commentary by Rashi, and a fairly readable translation.
Being Modern Orthodox and not quite as far to the right of the Jewish religious spectrum as the editors, I'm not quite on the same page as the editors in their commentary. I would sooner see more of Rabbi Samson Rafael Hirsch and Jacob Hertz quoted.
This does not, in my opinion take away from the work, but two things do: I would find the translations easier to read if it were not in italics and (much more importantly) the passing off of Rashi commentary on Song of Songs as a "translation" is far less than honest, no matter what they believe the text is an allegory about the relationship between G-d and Israel or a love poem (more likely it is both).

Excellent Chumash that Grows with the ReaderReview Date: 2009-01-14
It's nicely printed--very durable, surprisingly thick paper for such books, and the text is pleasantly large and easy on the eyes--probably Times New Roman, 12-14 point, would be the best comparison. My only issue is that the English translation is set in italics, which is a very minor thing. It's also larger than some of the other volumes out there, even some single-volume editions of the entire Tanakh. But with the larger print, it's very well worth it.
I do, however, disagree with a previous reviewer that this is 'only a starting point.' Rather, I've found that it grows with the reader (though one should always read multiple commentaries). The Hebrew text is well-printed, clear and in a large size, with both vowels and cantillation markings. Sections that use a different trope depending on whether they're being read at home or in the synagogue (ex. the Ten Commandments in Exodus) have both versions given. Additionally, Rashi's commentary is included in Hebrew, in the traditional Rashi script. The Targum Onkelos is printed alongside the Hebrew text, useful for those learning Aramaic in preparation for Talmud study in the original.
The haftarot are also included (English and Hebrew) with a brief introduction relating each to the parashah it accompanies, but otherwise there is little commentary. Other references include maps, an index, and illustrations (ex. of the priestly vestments).
In conclusion, if one is looking for a single-volume Chumash, this one is highly recommended, particularly for converts and those returning to Judaism after many years away, and who are thus not as familiar with the material.

The Ultimate Blast From The PastReview Date: 2009-04-24
A parallel but larger purpose to the book's preservation of the monks' temporal lives, well documented in fascinating detail, is the quest for understanding. The permanence of eleven centuries of minutiae of daily office is dwarfed by the permanence of human nature: Who am I ? Who is God ? What is the world ? What is the relationship among us ? The experiences of five monks and the understanding they grasp and even more importantly what they don't grasp provide an infinity of contemplation, wonderment, and even astonishment. Highly recommended.

An unlikely page turnerReview Date: 2008-05-13
The small details and trials of contemporary monastic life, little changed from the order's founding in the 11th century, are precisely described here and form a compelling counterpoint to the men's psychic yearning for the spiritual. You might both experience the "feel" of a hairshirt yet also "hear" the sweetness of a chant well-sung. You can share the frustration of one musically trained monk with his tone-deaf brothers.
Reader's tip: Keep a bookmark in the page that lists the monks' secular and religious names (it can be confusing keeping track of who is who).
This book will appeal to the religious and non-religious alike who share a fascination with those whose search for God sets them apart from our materialistic and secular society. "An Infinity of Little Hours" depicts a world which few of us would or could enter but which is nevertheless as fascinating to observe as any other rarified culture.
