...And In God We Trust
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2007-09-23

This little Gem of a book;only 2 3/4 X 3 1/4 inches and 127 pages packs a much greater impression of what America is all about than its tiny size would suggest.
America has been the guiding light in Freedom,Hope,Liberty and Justice throughout her short history. If one were to base their impression of America on how she is portrayed by much of the World's media, including that of America;they would have a totally misguided idea of what America means.
A read and reflection on the ideas put forth here describe what the true meaning of America really is.
Yes,there are many ,both inside and outside America who criticize and even hate America and all it stands for. Most of this hatred comes from countries, people, cultures and idealogies that are in complete opposition to everything that America stands for. Their experiences and history have been momentous failures and it must be that elements who adopt them can only develop hate for America and all that she has accomplished.
It is interesting that the text of this book was edited by someone with a name like Tara Ann McFadden, about as Irish as you can get.But then, aren't all Americans people who, either personally or are descendents of people who fled other countries where oppression and despair were the order of the day.

The book is filled with profound words from many people from many walks of life, many years both past and present, many who were born in America, many who were born elsewhere and even some who still live outside America, but understand what America is all about.
You will read ideas by people who represent what is the true meaning of America.Their names and dates are given;but the quote I believe
to be the most appropriate is the one on page 120 ,and is Anonymous .It could be by anyone who understands and loves America.

"When God made the oyster,he guaranteed his absolute economic
and social security. He built the oyster a house, his shell,to
shelter and protect him from his enemies...But when God made
the Eagle,He declared,"The blue sky is the limit-- build your
own house!"...The Eagle, not the Oyster is the emblem of
America."
The book ends up with a quote from John Adams (1735-1826) American President.

"I pray Heaven to bestow the best of blessings on this house, and all that shall here after inhabit it.May none but honest and wise men ever rule under this roof."
--Engraved on the fireplace of the White House State Dining Room.
This idea has guided America since the beginning and is still her guiding light. Keep this thought in mind when you hear those who want to remove the words "In God We Trust" . With what would they replace them with?

Excellent Resource

I found this to be an excellent resource of quotes and motivation, far better than Ian Jackman's the Artist's Mentor. Peggy Hadden has really put together some profound quotes on all aspects of art and its process to help you in tight spots like inspiration, colour theory, planning, sketching etc.

I have searched through many online quotations banks before I bought this thinking I could short cut this book, but its not as easy as it sounds for you have to understand the context that the artist was quoted and what was his point and often, you don't know enough to make those connections.

This book allows a shortcut, a breviary, to great artists quotes. The ability to stand and learn from them and see and learn art from them. When the quote is not complete, Ms Hadden puts in the context. For each chapter she gives some context on why this is important also.

No one is an artist unless he carries his picture in his head long before painting it & so is sure of his method and composition.
Claude Monet, artist.

To me that quote and so many like that, helped me tremendously in my creative process. It's a rare gem. I found that her book on the Artist's quest for Inspiration was a good handbook to work with this one as well. Two fine books. I have not read the others. Remy

This is such a cute book for anyone who loves cats. It has adorable pictures and such cute "messages of wisdom"! It certainly does not pertain to just barn cats but applies equally to city cats! Anyone who loves cats will identify with so many pearls of wisdom here. This makes a great stocking stuffer or if you want to give a little something to someone special. It can easily be read in one sitting and would be wonderful for a parent to read to a child as the pictures are cute and the reading beneath them is short and interesting.

There are several thousand books in my home. Beside my desk there is a shelf with the special books I travel with on speaking tours and those I refer to when I need the 'right' quote. This is one of those special books. You can't open a page without finding something delightful. I love this book.

A must for every cat lover!

If you love cats, you will love this book! It contains hundreds of quips and quotes that will delight and amuse every ailurophile. Arranged by subject - Cat People, Nine Lives, Cat Chow, The Amorous Cat, The Mysterious Cat, etc. - these quotes cover every aspect of cat life and relationships. They come from a wide variety of people, including Ernest Hemingway, Louis Wain, Abraham Lincoln and Plutarch. Clearly Ms. Rogak combed a wide variety of sources for this collection. The only flaw is that the sources of the quotes are not listed, which would have added to the book's interest. However, that is the only weakness in a rich, deep and enjoyable compilation of quotes on a subject that is dear to many a human heart.

In Praise of Fatherhood
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2006-06-19
I received this book yesterday as a Father's Day present. It is both brief and profound, with quotations from a wide range of leaders and writers on fatherhood from Jimmy Carter and Bill Cosby to John Wayne and William Carlos Williams.

I would strongly recommend it as a Father's Day gift in the future. I would also recommend it to men on the verge of becoming fathers, men who have just become fathers, and fathers in need of some inspiration.

The quotations also serve as a guide to contemporary books and authorities on fatherhood, such as Marcus Jacob Goldman's The Joy of Fatherhood, Peter Carey's The Granta Book of the Family,
Kevin Osborn's The Complete Idiot's Guide to Fatherhood, Annie Pigeon's Dad's Little Instruction Book, John L. Hart's Becoming A Father, Peter Mayle's How to Be a Pregnant Father, William Plummer's Wishing My Father Well, Paul Riser's Couplehood, Bill Cosby's Fatherhood, and H. Jackson Browne's A Father's Book of Wisdom.

The book has eight chapters, focusing on becoming a father, being a better father, fathers and daughters, fathers and sons, a father's wisdom, the difficulty of fatherhood, appreciating one's father, and grandfatherhood.

All the quotations in the book are at at least stimulating and provocative, and many are vital and profound.

Five of my favorites are as follows:

"A baby is God's opinion that life should go on," Carl Sandburg

"I hope when you grow up you will dedicate your life to working out plans to make people happy instead of making them miserable, as war does today," Joseph P. Kennedy to 8 year old Edward M. Kennedy

"Children need models rather than critics, " Joseph Joubert

"I watched a small man with thick calluses on both hands work fifteen and sixteen hours a day. I saw him once literally bleed from the bottom of his feet, a man who came here uneducated, alone, unable to speak the language, who taught me all I needed to know about faith and hard work by the eloquence of his example," Mario Cuomo

"The lone father is not a strong father. Fathering is a difficult and perilous journey and is done well with the help of other men," John L. Hart

The time it takes to get through the book is short, and it is time well spent. The Quotable Dad is an excellent source of inspiration and insight for fathers old and new, and for future fathers galore.

Few people represent college football like Joe Paterno. He has led top rated football teams to victory for over three decades, and continues to devote his energy towards the pursuit of excellence. As a teacher, a leader, and a role model, coach Paterno stands tall for generations of young people. There have been many attempts to chronicle the life and times of this legend, but none has the overall impact of "Quotable Joe" by L. Budd Thalman. Featuring selected quotes by and about the coach, this concise guide gets to the root of everything from his formative years in Brooklyn to his thoughts on national championships, polls, and publicity. Thalman is the ultimate insider, serving as the Associate Athletic Director for Communications at Penn State since 1986, and he brings a personal flavor to the chapter introductions including a funny story about the first time his father, a die hard West Virginia fan, met coach Paterno. Presented with classic photos and a foreward by former Penn State quarterback Todd Blackledge, "Quotable Joe" is a great resource for any serious sports fan.

Well-organized and thorough

The book contains more than 3,000 quotations organized into general topics, helpfully listed at the beginning. Within each topic quotes are listed chronologically, with proverbs and sayings at the beginning.

Those looking for specific quotes can try the author or subject indexes at the end. I found the sources complete and accurate. They tell not only who said it, but when, where, case #, etc. This book is a valuable resource.
